Over clock the gpu? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi guys back on the og epic forums we used to have a little thing called control freak. All of you who came from the epic are prolly taking a trip down memory lane oc'ing your gpu to double its factory limit. Well I'm just wondering if we could ever get something like that? I thought I saw a kernel on the Verizon or att forums that oc'd the gpu I cannot remember by how much bcuz it was when this phone was still a baby in the development section. And I am also not sure if our developers have already done that and just not mentioned it. Any way I think it would be cool if it were stable.

[Q] ICS overclock??

Just wondering if anyone was overclocking your phones while using ICS?
i have tried many ROMS and Kernals posted by you all, been doing alot of underclocking mainly, but just was curious as if there was a way to overclock using any of the kernals....
i DO realize that alot of people would rather underclock to save batt...including myself. just was curious and willing to try it out....
any pointers or apps avail?
thanx!

You can overclock and undervolt with tegrak. I don't do too much overclocking as it is kind of pointless with the chip we have. But I use tegrak to under volt.
oh... well thanx for the replies.. i guess ill wait till the codes come out.. i was using teragat when i had GB..
seems like overclocking would make sence wih ics considering its being released on higher powered phones. just seemed like if i overclocked at 1.4ghz and chose a handy set of tweeks for one of the devs, then any and all lags and microsec freezes would go away...
anyways.. thanx again...

I overclocked my ICS to 1.4GHz. That is the highest it will go without having to start bumping up the voltage. The highest I got it to was 1.8GHz with voltage increases. Anything higher than 1.4 requires me to over volt the phone and thus eats battery fast. I settled on 1.4 and a good trade off for speed and battery life. If I plan on being out away from a charger I can use Teragat to under clock my phone to get maximum battery life.

It's more based on how the rom works, and the kernel yes helps with CPU and GPU scores but I noticed his GPU scores are lower than mine, one of the nation reasons I'm still stock. Because it's probably persues kernel and has issues with FPS in real world and quadrant performance.
He probably ran it 1600/1600 on performance or something on those lines
Edit: this is mine stock rooted GPU much better than his, until persues can match this without overclocking the GPU just to get the same performance I do on stock I'm not switching.

Maybe you should consider that you're not the brightest, most experienced person in this thread before talking smack.
Exposing a component to more heat means you are shortening its life, there is no doubt about that. Those with overclocked desktop CPUs often have elaborate setups with overclocking in mind. You can't add a better heatsink, or a fan to your phone. Mobile CPUs, especially, are designed to be efficient at a certain range of clock frequencies. Moving it too far from the norm means you eventually see diminishing returns.
I've fried everything from my first Commodore 64 to my current box, and everything in between. If you think the phone can function at that level for an extended period of time without failure, best of luck to you.

Dude it was part of the whole meaning of rooting and tweaking. Checking different settings for a little bit, testing them and then reverting back to defaults. I will never leave overclocked/ undervolted or vice-versa settings for a whole day... its just part of the fun of tweaking and experimenting with our devices...

I am all for overclocking, modding, tweaking, hacking, etc. Breaking **** is the best way to learn. But that doesn't mean you should push your hardware past the point of exponentially diminishing returns, and increased risk of burning your chips out. That is, unless, you have no problem with the very real possibility that you'll need to buy a new phone.
That being said, kudos on "going plaid" with your Quadrant score

Kernel inquiry

Ive been working(slowly due to work) on a kernel for the lgog. I've been able to do some pretty heavy overclocking but I need some community preference.
Overclocking obviously causes more heat and reduced battery life. Higher overclocks require overvolting beyond required to maintain 1.5ghz set by Qualcomm/lg. Keep this in mind before asking for 2.0+ overclocks in daily kernels.
What top clock are you guys wanting for a performance kernel? Also are you guys interested in a reduced clocks kernel. 1.0-1.2 top clock with a lowered low end clock along with lower GPU and system clocks.
Personally I Dont see a big need in heavy overclocking on a quad core. However I would like some opinions before I release test kernels. I will attempt to see just how far the lgog can go at least once, but that will take around 10-20 test kernels to find the top speed.

The highest overclock that I would like to see is around 1.7-1.8Ghz even though I don't know what I would need my phone running that fast for. Now the under clocked kernel sounds very interesting .

Just looking at how this governor uses CPU, it hardly uses the middle ranges. Maybe some better governors? Just another thought.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I would be interested in a kernel with A 1.8 top speed slightly lower bottom end and different governors. While 1.5 is fast 1.8 with a better governor along with a 128 minimum speed would be a good comprise kernel
I don't know of anyone having speed issues to warrant an over clocking kernel, seems more for bragging rights.
I think most people would want a kernel that saves battery but doesn't compromise on speed. Also, have you looked into the wake lock issue yet?

I'll probably use faux's volt control. This is my first Qualcomm kernel so I've been mainly running through it. The n4 is far far far cleaner. Our source is a jumbled mess to an extent.
Also the other devs have found a way to run n4 stock ROM with kernel. However finding the best way for everyone to benefit is being sought after.

I just loaded deodex lk8 fresh installed. perseous 31 and it makes my phone run jerky. I play arcane legends aswell and its noticable there too. stock is smooth for me.
I'm using ljc. I have force gpu rendering checked also. Seems to help a little.
Hmm I noticed that frame skipping too, but even when forcing performance at 1.8ghz and capping the gpu at 533mhz it still happens (even though its capping the vsync)
but besides that perseus kernel runs smooth for everything use.
I wonder what's causing it. I haven't tried stock yet. (no joke I rooted this phone within an hour or so of owning it. Didn't even mess with it stock outside of activating it)
No one sees this really? I have a cov worker with the same setup. installed the kernel and his does the same jerkyness. so it can't be my device. I'm very keen to stuff like this btw.

So far it seems to be running well. Run Quadrant and it is using Eco mode as my scores varied by 2000. Don't care about scores just the feel.
The governor is ondemand and uses 1134 alot more. Which is nice not seeing 1512 mostly so battery should be better.
Do have a question though. Do you want us to test different governors? If so, what's the preferred program?
Thanks joker!! It's great to finally have a kernel to play with!!
edit. Decided to use Set CPU. Seems to be working fine. I take that back about using 1134. Guess it just happened to be the speed of choice by what I was running. Still mostly 384 and 1512. And of course Deep sleep
This has worked fine in my testing Bluetooth steaming and calls work without issue. Camera works so does WiFi. I still see the msm host wake lock but it's not that high. Got 20 thousand in antutu so it seems to work without issue.
