Calc app works perfectly with multi window....
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
If you guys are talking about the stock app, how can you say it works perfectly when the dimensions of the app force you to use more than three quarters of the screen to use it? Could you recommend one that uses half the screen, because if I am expected to give up so much real estate for it, it would be better to completely switch from one app to another. I had thought the whole idea of multitasking was to do more than one thing at a time.
EDIT
Honestly, if you guys are just attempting to be rude, I'd rather not have the help because I was intending to get answers to a serious question.
If the video player that comes stock didn't show the full dimensions of the movie but "worked perfectly" with multi window by merely running and displaying half of the screen, I doubt that would be good enough for you. Of course, you could just expand the window to get more of the picture, but that defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Summary of Devices
Device: Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-T889)
Android Version: 4.1.1 Jelly Bean
Build: JRO03C.T889UVALK8 (Rooted)
Device: Motorola DROID X
Android Version: 2.3.3 Gingerbread
Build: 4.5.605.Accurate_Battery (Rooted)
I second aircal, I use it on jellybam (no multi-window as it is AOSP) but floating calc = better the multi-window calc since you can have 3 things up at a time then lol.
Of course the calc is not super feature rich, but for general math it is good enough for me.

Thanks. With the dev name, I was able to find it. Without it it seemed as though you were talking about the stock and I didn't know any better. It was pretty far down the list, but I found it and I will try it out. The screen shot surely looks much more promising then the stock one on our devices. The Air also looks to have even greater utility and I will give it a look as well. Thanks again.

Ok, this may be a totally dumb question, but how the hell do I control/interact with Google Earth on my Nexus (4.0.2). I cannot seem to get it to tilt and pan etc using touch. I see no other icons or menus with control options? Am I missing something simple?
Uninstall and redownload.
Terminators run on Android
Ok. I'll try that. but this was the pre-installed Earth that came on my phone. Not sure I can uninstall. will try though. It's updated itself since I got the phone so should have the latest version, but will try. thanks
Ok I uninstalled the updates to the app, but I cannot uninstall this "system app". So I disabled it, forced stop. Enabled it again and will now download updates to make it 6.1 again.
I'm not sure what I should be seeing when using this app. There are no controls.
Just go to market and search for your application on the menus, then press your app Earth and there will be an option to update.. That's what i've done.
Cheers!
I have the very latest google earth from the market. 6.1 something.
Here is a screenshot. Does this look right? how do I tilt the screen to get the 3d angle? all I can do is drag around, and rotate. I cannot tilt so I can see topography?
ARGH. Im sure its just me not knowing how to use it.
Screen shot - where are the tilt controls?

I too would like to learn how to tilt the view in Google Earth.
But I am bemused by the responses so far. Why is it necessary to uninstall and reinstall? Are you suggesting that the factory installation (with updates) is somehow broken?
Use two fingers to rotate/tilt.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hold two fingers to the screen and instead of pinching, just slide both up or down to change viewing angle or rotate them in a circular motion around a centred point in order to spin.

I thought so, because the OP said other icons and controls were also missing. I also did not realize it was a system app (it was a Market app on my Fascinate and treated by my ROM as a user app)

Google maps works the exact same way. If you go to maps and drag 2 fingers down you will get that "3d" view. It's cool. They must be trying to get some continuity from app to app.

Although I'd agree it's not massively obvious in the app, there's always Menu > Help. Which has this to say:
To tilt your screen, touch the Look-Around icon and ensure it's enabled. To tilt up, touch the screen and move down. To tilt down, touch the screen and move up.

Spotted the problem? The "Look Around" button doesn't seem to exist any more, so the help is out of date! Wonderful.
I can confirm the "two finger draggy-spin" method works fine though
I know the solution. This was happening to me too but i figured out. This is how to do it. Enable auto rotation open Google earth and tilt your device then hold two fingers and swipe downward or upward. I hope i helped so thank me. Ok!!!!!!

A thing I've noticed when showing people swype, is that the faster a typist you are, the easier it is to learn swype. I type 120 WPM myself, so I have a pretty good mental picture of where all of the keys are.

Still gotta DL the WHOLE app (eg. a 1GB game update) instead of just the new/replaced files that Google announced will be launched with the JB release.
Smart Update: http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/17/3248874/google-play-store-smart-updates-enabled
Anyone know what going on with that?
I don't know the technical details of the technology, but from what I read about it I assume it only works for changes in the APK. Games often contain a lot of graphic data, which probably renders this technique kinda useless
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure they are already enabled but they still show as if you are downloading the entire file. So there is no way to know when they are put to use and how big the apk diff files are.
Busybox free uses it..and facebook 1.9.9 update too...
With the last updates it was finished within seconds..the download....
Interesting. So how does Google select which apps start using it? Or is it some kinda automated update adding apps to its list for Smart Update support?
Noo the devs of the apps must build it in aka support it

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. Google automatically enables smart app updates for all (I presume) apps. This was said at the I/O conference that developers didn't need to do anything and personally I haven't seen any new API calls nor manifest lines that I need to add.

FWIW, I updated Dead Trigger the other day and it only downloaded around 500k of updated data... so, yea, it does work for games as well.
Again, it depends on the APK and the changes involved.
Something I noticed the other day: the progress bar on the Play Store was slow, and would cut off somewhere in the middle just before updating. If you want to see the real update progress, look in the notification shade.

Basically you can use 2 windows side by side like watch a video and browse the net......ergo a true multitasking system.
Our nexus 7 has a bigger screen real estate and the only limiting factor i see is the availability of 1GB of RAM.But if anyone can make it work, then it is the devs.
So if any dev is Interested.....here is a link to a thread where the op has found all the goodies required for this port on the original note(the work there has just begun ::silly

Tablets are big. Smartphone apps are small. This would seem to present an obvious answer to the many, many Android apps that scale up to massive resolutions instead of adjusting their total user interface Ice Cream Sandwich-style. But no, apps form unconcerned or merely oblivious developers continue to scale up, as if someone ran over an Android smartphone with a steamroller. I'm surprised there's no aosp project like this already. I'm sure it relies heavily on the touchwiz framework so it probably can't be ported.

Hey, gang. I did several searched through the site but didn't find a solution. Let me toss this out there. I'm looking for an app with a particular function. What I want to do is "freeze" the locations of the icons/widgets on the screens. Something that will allow their use, but not their moving or deletion.
Here's the deal. My daughter loves my N7, and uses it for her ECSE and speech therapy classes with specific apps to facilitate her development. (She's ASD.) She's really good about the length of time she's on the tablet, and has never gone off and gotten into any trouble with it. The problem is that several of her apps have a "drag and drop on the red X" function to close particular segments or sections within the apps. They're similar enough to the "drag and drop onto the red X" function in the Droid UI that she gets confused, deletes the icons for the apps themselves, and then can't find them the next time she wants to use them.
While I can set up a second user with her name and the same development apps that she uses, it still won't stop her from losing icons from time to time.
I've looked into a number of parental control apps, and while they clamp things down, I haven't found one that locks or "freezes" the positions of the icons.
Does something like this even exist? Trolling through Google Play hasn't found anything specific. Device is stock 4.2.2, unlocked and rooted, if that makes any different in recommendations. Thanks, all. :fingers-crossed:

With SS Launcher you can move any icon to any position on the screen (no grid), rotate to any angle, resize and recolor, pretty much unlimited. Many examples in this thread. My Home (notice Flipboard and FUEL at an angle; also notice that Wifi Manager widget is "behind" Widgetsoid widgets at bottom so all are active):
Sorry to not get back sooner, got mired in a 65 hour week.
Cue forehead-slapping "doh!" image. I got my head fixated on an app, and completely forgot about alternate launchers. Brilliant suggestion, guys, many thanks. Can you run the lock functions over a stock layout? ASD kids do well with routine and familiarity, and it would help that she not have to relearn new of screen layouts. OTOH, I can always replicate the layout that I already have, too.
Thanks again, gang, the advice and recommendations are appreciated.
I know nova aill let you import the layout from other launchers not sure if apex does it too or not. But worth checking.
