[Q] Slow charging via computer, fast via ac - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey all,
i have a very rare problem i guess.
it takes approximately an hour to charge my phone 5% when usb is connected to computer.
but if the same usb is connected to wall charger, then it takes the normal time like about 10 mins to charge 5% (very approximately, not timed).
the usb is same and stock
the wall charger is same and stock
Phone Soft Specs-
Stock Rom - 4.1.2 DLL4
Recovery - TWRP 2.3.3.1
Kernel - Redpill 1.00
i don't guess anything else effects much of anything since it's problem related to speed and not battery drain.

You do know that a wall charger is quicker than a usb charger ON EVERY PHONE,
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

Fact.
Sent from my GT-N7100

It didn't used to be so slow.
I mean 1 hour and 5%
Thats nasty.
Will plugging into usb3 port help ?
Sent From Samsung's Galaxy Note II Using Internet

Usb2 is 500mah and usb3 900mah.
Sent from my GT-N7100

And ac ?
Sent From Samsung's Galaxy Note II Using Internet

Ac is what your charger is rated. Need to look.
Sent from my GT-N7100

Just found out my eyes. Its 2ah.
Isn't there no way to boost it
Sent From Samsung's Galaxy Note II Using Internet

Nope. 2a is about as high as you're gonna get. I think the note 2 is limited to 1.5a anyways.
Sent from my GT-N7100

No no i meant for the usb cable.
Sent From Samsung's Galaxy Note II Using Internet

Nope.
Sent from my GT-N7100

K man thanx
Sent From Samsung's Galaxy Note II Using Internet

microusb connector has 1.8A limit by the official standard, but in practise a well made cable and charger can manage 2A.
a long cable will incur more resistive losses in the wire. 2A is really quite a high current!
---------- Post added at 09:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:02 PM ----------
p.s. when you say charge from computer usb port, do you mean desktop or laptop?
a lot of laptop USB ports won't manage the full power specification. which is why some USB dvd drives have a "Y" shaped cable to draw more current.

Nope desktop. It's not even grounded.

Charging Cable Recommendation

I would like a longer cable that will also allow charging from computer USB, car charger USB port, etc...
Basically I don't want to be limited to having to have that brick of a Samsung wall charger with me, and of course the longer cable.
Can anyone recommend one? I've looked on Amazon but all the descriptions just aren't clear enough...
Unfortunately I have been reading that the "bulky" charger is the only one that will charge the tab properly. My suggestion would be to buy a USB extension cable to solve ur short cable issue.

Really? I swear I read of a cable that would work on computer USB.... darn, my cable is short circuiting at the 30 pin so I need a new one regardless. I have an extention cable already.

Try this:

I leave my tab plugged in overnight to my pc using the supplied samsung usb data cable. It charges at a slower rate but is typically charging about 70% over a 9 hour period.
I also have an USB3.0 2.0m extension cable (tried an ASUS transformer for a week), which allows charging and data transfer ok

That will allow the Tab to charge from any 2A charger (most common would be iPad chargers).
The tab will go into USB charging mode (e.g. charging disabled) with iPad chargers unless you use the cable above or modify the charger.
I haven't had time to investigate, but it MIGHT be possible to allow charging from unmodified iPad chargers with a kernel modifications. Not sure - it depends on whether we have separate ADCs for USB D+ and D- or not.
this will work, you could also buy the cable without the charger.

Can't charge from PC, not enough current available. Best you can do is adapters like th DX one to allow iPad chargers which are often more compact.

Tab, not Tab 10.1 - The original 7" Tab will charge from a PC, the 10.1 will not.
The cable will work with the Tab 10.1 just like the 10.1's stock sync cable - which means it will transfer data but not charge when connected to a PC.
Guys, I keep reading in this thread that the tab 10.1 can't be charged via a PC, well I'm here to tell you it can and does. Every night I leave mine connected to my PC, and in the morning it's charged! Admittedly it's a slower charge rate (seems to be around 6 or 7% per hour), but it charges never the less. I use the samsung supplied cable and nothing else.
Of course, it won't charge if the tab is in use via a PC USB port...

HSPA is draining my Gnex battery faster than my macbook air can charge it!!

Just got my Galaxy Nexus and everything is rosey and wonderful (simply using stock jelly bean for now), until suddenly i see that I can't even use 3g internet for long periods - *even with it being charged by my macbook air*!!.......
Do some kind fellow XDAers have any suggestions for how I can improve the situation?
Are there some cables that are better than others for charging - maybe a shorter one rather than longer, one with extra pins in it or something, specific brand? Is it that the macbook air isn't high wattage enough of a computer to reliably supply a battery-sucking HSPA chip in the nexus???
My MBA itself was ALSO plugged in at the power and it was in full power mode afaik. also it's windows bootcamp on the mba, don't know if that makes a difference.
Anyway Is there a specific USB charger that would be recommended? some high grade one to guarantee best charging power?
But I can't always be at a wall charger when doing a bit hspa session on my phone. it might be the train. and the laptop is the only power source with which to keep the juice up. (well try anyway :/)
I'll be upgrading to the retina macbook pro anyway soon, maybe that will improve things?
is there some windows app that allows you to regulate usb port power and keep it at a constant high level? (if this is even scientifically correct the way I'm describing things).....
Thanks
USB charging is fairly weak and slow. Some custom Roms have a fast charge option, not sure how much it would help though. You'll have to let someone else chime in who has more knowledge on the fast charge option.

I don't think there is enough power from the air to power your phone enough. You could try installing a kernel with fast USB charging like trinity.

Get a 1amp AC charger
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Its likely that the ports on you air aren't able to put out enough power to actually charge the phone. I have an air as well and my phone charges VERY slowly when connected to it.
I would recommend buying a longer usb to micro usb cable.
I got a 6ft one from www.monoprice.com. Good price and solid quality.

Won't do any good if he needs the air to charge in certain situations. I agree that the MacBook just isn't able to push enough to keep up.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
fast charge option with kernel is best idea as mentioned above
Try to use AC Charger instead of USB. That's the root cause. The maximum power of USB is only 500mA, but the minimum of AC Charger is 1000mA.
BTW, that's not the HSPA's fault. When I play games on GNex which means the screen keep on, the USB charging can't catch up with it. You can see the lossing of power, 5%, 4%, 3%, 2%, 1% and .....
I have this problem also. USB charging takes a hell lot of time and hence I use the wall charger to charge it
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
USB 2.0 puts out a maximum of 500mA, with line loss etc it'll be more like 400. That's barely enough to charge the phone if you're using it. Charge it off the wall with a 1A or 2A charger.
That being said, my late 2008 MacBook Pro 13" charges my GNex just fine off of USB.
The latest model MacBook Airs and Pros will help a little because they have USB 3.0, which charges at 750mA (or thereabouts). Still, if you want a fast charge just use the included 1A charger or buy a 2A charger online.
This is normal, USB only charges at 500 mA, ac charges at 1000 mA. so its possible to pull more than it can charge. Use a kernel and enable USB fast charge and it will use ac mode on USB, but only if your USB connection can output higher than 500. So be careful.

[Q] Charging Note 2 via Laptop USB

Hi I understand that laptop usb ports only giviing out 500mah and the charger we have gives out 2 amp, and charging via USB port from the laptop will be really slow based on my previous experience with other android phones.
Have anyone try charging the note 2 via a USB port and how long does it takes for a full charge? Just a curious question.

i find the cable quite annoying to be honest, it unplugs itself with any movement and it takes ageeeees to charge but i guess its a good thing because the batt does hold up quite a while. Need something faster tho as im always on the move
i had 87% about an hr ago and i put for charge with usb and is all charged,i always charge with usb

Nope. Just regular USB 2.0.
Are you using your phone whilst it's charging? I'm not, except to check an email when one arrives...
Best thing to do is to close wifi and lock the mobile or even completely shut down the mobile if u dont neef it while charging, it will charged faster this way..

Ah no wonder. Yes I was using the phone while charging it on usb. I guess the charging rate could not keep up with the power used.

I use Android Revolution ROM with Perseus kernel and it's quite faster, but I think this kernel makes the phone draw 900mah instead of 500 so maybe it's because of that.
Sorry. You are all misinformed.
Usb gives .5A in dumb mode.
When the device talks to the host and asks for more, very often it will get 1A on older computers and 2A+ on newer ones.
Some even have a yellow port that gives 2A even when the pc is off.
So theres no simple 'chargin on computer usb' its damn complex. Only if android showed amps its getting....
My nexus one had 'spare parts' app that showed charging was either usb or ac, meaning .5A or >.5A

[Q] Very slow charging. why??

When i connect my galaxy note 2 to stock charger it shows that in my battery stats it's charging as USB not AC.
Well what's supposed to be the problem. is my charger broken or the usb port in my phone is damaged??
Are you using the stock charger with the stock USB cable? My note 2 was charging really slow until I realized that the USB extension cable I was using wasn't delivering enough juice.

Do you have another 2A charger/USB cable that you can test from? I use an HP Touchpad charger + cable because its 2A and has a long cable.
I just happen to experience the same thing. I have had my Note II for a couple of weeks now and it have always charged from almost empty to full in less than 2,5 hours. Today however, it's going really slow. I do not know why. I've tried everything I can think of. I juse only the stock charger. Also tried the Ipad charger - no luck. This seem to be a quite common problem.
Hmm, just as I thought, more and more of this should be coming in upcoming days. I lost two good night's sleep because of this. Anyway, this is what I have done and you guys SHOULD do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37052690&postcount=1
first time ever i have faced this issue (slow charging) couple of days back. it was dropped to almost 1%/3min
I have simply reboot to recovery and wiped cache
Now it come back to normal 40%/hr.

I have discovered that the stock charging usb-cable only has 4 pins in the micro-usb end. It looks like on is missing, from the standard five-pins. Can anyone check your stock usbs and see if there are four or five pins, and report back? Thanks!

I found a huge variance in charging rates based on a combination of chargers and cables. Goes to show that the cable makes a huge difference. Here's my findings:
** Stock Charger (2A):
w/Stock Cable (4-pin) - 1698
w/Cable from another phone (5-pin) - 1698
w/Cable from battery pack (5-pin)- 1698
w/generic eBay cable (4-pin)- 100! - It didn't charge at all, even with screen off.
** iPhone Charger (1A):
w/Stock Cable (4-pin) - 1300
w/Cable from another phone (5-pin) - 1100
w/Cable from battery pack (5-pin) - 1300
w/generic eBay cable (4-pin) - 100!
** Car Charger (1A):
w/another generic eBay cable - 490

[Q] SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 2 : using a ipad 1charger for my note2

The original charger that comes with my sgn2 sometimes gives me a current_now of 466 sometimes 1000...when i charge my phone it says that i am charging it by usb but im really charging it from the wall...i dont know why..
I had tried using a ipad1 for charging it which has a 2.1V. Normally the original charger only gives a 2.0V. But when i used the ipad1 charger and connecy it with my sgn2 my phone says that i am charging with AC which is from the wall..using the app Galaxy Charging Current Pro this is what shows up:
Current_now: 1698
Current_avg: 1300
Current_max: 1300
Is this safe or should i stop using my ipad1 charger for charging my note 2
Thanks for hearing me out!!
Try using a five pin cable instead of fiddling to with charger.

Hi
What I know is that the original 'charger' just gives a 5V Output (i guess dc) just like a normal usb Port and that the real charger is in the phone but it could be a problem with ac... or are you talking about 2 amps?

Sorry for my english.

It stayed on 8%for like half an hour. Then I gave up. I took out an old black five pin cable which is good as hell.
