Whenever I connect N2 via MTP and transfer a video file or a text file it shws the following:-
Although the file gets transferred successfully , i do have to click "Yes" and if there are multiple files on "Do this for all files" checkbox.
I hate the extra clicking. Is there any way to get around this?
AM on Windows 7 .
I get the same alert, no solution yet.

Just got my GN (unlocked from Google Play) and trying to figure out this MTP thing, in partifuclar Windows gives a a warning: "Your device might not be able to play or view this file" *every time* I do a file transfer.
How do I transfer my audiobooks/music/movies without getting the warning?
Windows gives you this warning when it assumes your device (phone) can't open a file. For instance it doesn't know that the device, that it thinks is a music player, is actually is your phone and that it is capable of opening a pdf or mobile book or what ever. Just ignore the warning if you know you have the proper software on your phone to open the file.
Yeah I just bought myself a galaxy nexus too last night and was quite surprised with this message, just ignore it mate.
I ignored it and I have to wait for the rest of my life for just 1 file :crying:
ONe thing that happens to me is that when I try to copy a mkv (tried with several different ones), the explorer just crashes on Windows 8. If I change the extension to mp4 It copies just right. Weird.
Good thread
If any body can remove the alert, it would be better.
All android have this annoying alert.

I think he meant to say that the same warnings pop up while using multiple android devices.
Windows gives this warning for all MTP devices, unless you are transferring music files.
Is there anyone who has found out how to disable these warnings yet?
No you would have to complain to ms or edit whatever part of windows is necessary.
Some ROMs and some stock phones have an option for a phone to appear as a Media Device, or USB device. You may not get the error if you can tell your phone to not identify as an MTP device (but then you'll lose the ability to easily sync with Media Players)
usb mass storage
If you want connect your device to PC like usb MASS STORAGE, you can download app SG USB Mass Storage Enabler from play store. It should be woks with many smartphones, if not there are similar aplications
Got here from searching on Google and I found an answer on SuperUser.com. You'd have to do some command prompt tomfoolery with DLL files to remove the prompt, or use an application called ShellExView to disable it.
It's all here:

the only way for my PC to see see my S3 phone via USB is opening up Windows Media Player. how can i get my PC to recognize my S3 without opening Windows Media Player?
When I first hooked up the usb I got an "installing driver" message, after it finished I found a heading titled SGH-T889 where the normal drive letters are shown in the Windows Explorer app. Clicking that displayed two folders, one for the internal memory and another for the sd card. File access seemed entirely normal for both. You can also access both folders and transfer files wirelessly between the phone and PC by getting the eShare or eFile app from the play store and downloading and installing Filezilla on your computer. The eFile app along with a linked app called eRay have become my favorite file and device managers. Eray gives a very nice interface to display and manipulate all sorts of data about your device, apps, and services. Efile does the same for your files.

ok . so what did you doi after this?
The first post was made away from home and I couldn't be sure of my recollection of details but now I'm back and just plugged in again to refresh. When I connect to the PC I get a message in the notification area of the phone that displays the USB icon and a statement "Connected as a media device". This happened the first time as well and after a few seconds I got a notification on the PC that a new device had been connected and drivers were being installed. After a few minutes I got the usual message saying the drivers had been successfully installed and the device was ready to use. Then and now If I click on the window Start symbol then go to the "Computer" button it brings up a window that lists info in 3 sections: Hard Disk Drives, Devices with Removable Storage, and Portable Devices. In the Portable Devices section there is a phone icon with a label "SGH-T889 portable media device". Clicking that area opens the file browser window with two hard drive icons, one labeled "Card" the other "Phone". Each label includes the usual information of how much total and available storage is available in each, i.e. 14.6 GB free of 14.8 GB and 7.5 free of 10.8. Clicking on one of these brings up a typical file tree of the files in the respective area of phone storage. I seem to be able to do everything with the files I can do with any other storage. Select, cut, copy, paste, rename, delete etc. are available options just like any other file in windows.
There have been a couple of times where the connection did not seem to be detected with an initial hook up of the USB. I simply moved the USB plug from one PC port to the next in those cases and the connection was recognized and every thing worked as described after that. I think the connection is only being recognized using the same port I initially hooked up with and from which the device driver was installed. You might try plugging into a different USB port to see if it makes a difference.
In short everything seemes to work like any other device I've ever installed on windows and works the same way any other portable storage device works with the Windows Explorer app. I Just noticed I stated "Internet Explorer" in my original post. Sorry for any confusion this caused, I was on the road carrying on a conversation while I made that entry. I will correct the original now to correctly state "Windows Explorer".
OK just noticed the OP was asking about an S3. I hope the answer based on my Note 2 works for him. I was in the car listening to my wife with one ear and to by grandson with the other and just assumed the question was for a Note 2 since it was in a Note 2 thread. Hope I didn't waste too many peoples time (other than my own) explaining something that was already working for everyone.

wow.. i thought this was a sam s3 forum.. my bad.
The usb storage. MTS or whatever you call it . Very slow, terrible for navigating/editing multiple directories/windows at once. Frustrating. Can only find size of files by going in the directory and selecting all files. Anyone know of a good quick solution to this? I've played with the common game editor but don't really see it as encompassing the solution to all the problems of not having the classical USB mount
You think thats bad? Try having Mac. I can't even get it to recognize me phone lol. I'm forced to used my windows machine.
And I believe its a JB thing, not necessarily Samsung.

I had this problem too with my macbook pro then I found a solution tonight. Try this:
1. Install Kies if you haven't already, if you have make sure it's updated.
2. Connect your phone.
3. In Kies, click Tools, then Install Drivers (this will reinstall drivers
4. Download Android File Transfer.
Should work after this. Also make sure you have USB Debugging on and use PTP not MTP.

I will be sure to give this a shot tomorrow and send along an update. I rarely use Kies, updated it yesterday but never tried the drivers thing. Android file transfer never used to work but maybe the "install drivers" step is all that's needed.
And thats why I love it here on XDA. Thanks for the help brother!

I agree... coming from a s2 skyrocket, I really miss UMS. Why bother having expandable storage when it takes hours to transfer to a class 10 32gb sd card? That is if I can get it to transfer at all.
I'm now resorting to unmounting sd card and putting it in the computer to transfer files...big PITA
SGS3 Easy UMS doesnt work either.
Edit: Actually, I'm using kies now... still miss drag and drop
Agreed. Always had driver problems with this phone. Sometimes it wouldn't connect because drivers failed to install or "bad hardware ID" pops up in the corner. Only way to get it to work was to restart comp. And it would only work until I disconnected it, then gotta restart again. -.-
I'm gonna switch back to linux once I get some free time. I recommend you do the same.

It was a problem in ICS as well. I think the reason for that they went with MTP is that users would create a "messy" file structure when they randomly dragged and dropped files anywhere on both the internal and external card. Samsung can keep things organized when they encourage you to use Samsung Kies to add files to the device.
The mandate for MTP is also to reduce piracy of protected media files by ensuring the DRM is properly done. In the past, I could connect my phone directly to my Samsung SMART TV and play 720/1080p movies via UMS. This is now blocked with MTP.

Thanks I also noticed the slow data transfer speed when I upgraded my SII to S3. Thought it was something I was doing wrong. I've changed the default transfer to PTP and will check it out tonight.

Don't bother with PTP. PTP is just a camera. It's not like UMS so you might as well leave it on MTP

I was annoyed by this as well. Now when I want to add something to my sd card I just take it out of the phone and put the sd card in my Mac and add files that way. It's a little annoying but its not that big of a deal.
I think the closest you'll get to a true UMS experience is using Samba Filesharing Server (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba). You can then treat it like a network shared drive.
Of course you'll be limited by your WiFi speed. I think a possibility would be a USB host adapter and a USB ethernet adapter. I'm not sure if Android has support for a USB ethernet adapter but if that works then you should be able to connect to a gigabit switch/adapter and just be limited by USB2 speed.
It's not just this phone in general. They're all going that way as of ICS (Honeycomb as well) and up. If you use Windows it's not terrible but it is still slower. And yeah trying to use it with my Mac or even my Linux box is just frustrating. The primary reasoning was to merge the data and application volumes to give more space for applications. This is a better explanation of it. I do miss USB storage mode though.
Yep, totally frustrating for me also.
I remove my microSD card when I need to do lots of file management. But it's a clumsy workaround.
When i connect N2 via USB (MTP) and copy media files to the phone memory it gives the mesage its not compatible although i am able to play it on phone . Any mod/fix to get rid of this? Should save a few clicks.
Just select the 'Do this for all files' box at the bottom left of the dialogue box. Don't think you will see the message again.

I wont get that message again for the current file transfers that are in queue.
But if i connect phone again via USB and transfer, say another video file, it will ask again.
Haven't you had this problem/annoyance?
Oops. Wasn't thinking. Must admit that I haven't had this issue as I tend to use either Dropbox or Airdroid to move stuff.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
That is an issue with windows and not with the phone. Try to search how to disable that in windows. You probably have to modify some system file or another or change something in the registry of your computer.
I have this very strange issue which I discovered on my month old Note 2. I never had this issue with my previous device which was a Nexus S.
I hook up the phone via USB to my PC. Select "camera PTP" mode. Then when I browse the folders via Computer\GT-N7100\Phone\DCIM\Camera I don't see any videos that I shot. However, when I browse the files through the default "my files" app in the phone I see them. Why is this?
Windows 8 detected the device and installed all drivers too. Because of this I am not able to move the videos shot with the phone to my PC. Any help?
----------
Secondly, when I type on the default Samsung keyboard and make typos, the keyboard suggests the right spelling which is nice. However, when I tap on space, the suggested right spelling is not used. However, the wrongly typed spelling which I typed is used. This was not the case with the default keyboard which came on the Nexus S, it automatically used the suggestion. Any way to configure the keyboard the right way?
Any help on these 2 , especially the first one will be greatly appreciated.
to transfer, try airdroid

Mount as mtp not ptp for video and file transfers. Default keyboard doesn't autocorrect you'd have to use one of the modded stock keyboards from the themes and apps section

I mounted as mtp only. But still no luck. Is it something like large files are being ignored? Anybody else facing problem?
I finally used airdroid only to download the videos. But it’s not a straight forward fast process.

You can always use a file explorer and move them to your ext sd then pull it from the device and pop it in your PC to transfer them
