How to enter recovery/download with a Koodo T989D - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

There have been many people who have recently just purchased/received a new T989D from Koodo.
Issues on another thread came up about button combos to get in to recovery/download mode used by Telus/T-mobile phone variants have not worked for some.
I am posting this thread as a general reference for anyone who is looking for the exact instructions for the Koodo T989D variant,
as there are no other threads at the moment that explains this in detail (particularly for this phone).
For RECOVERY MODE the exact button combination for the Koodo T989D is:
Press and hold the "volume up + volume down" buttons, while holding the volume keys press and hold the "power button" until the phone vibrates/screen turns on to the Samsung logo and let go of 'only' the power button.
The phone should then display the recovery system boot image and load to the recovery start up screen.
For DOWNLOAD MODE the exact button combination for the Koodo T989D is:
(As a precautionary, take out your battery and place it back in)
While phone is off, connect the USB to your phone making sure the USB cable is attached directly to a powered USB port (if on a desktop PC, the main USB ports on the motherboard I/O is the safest way to go).
Now, press and hold 'only' the "volume down" button. While holding it, press the "power button" until you feel the phone vibrate/screen turn on and let go of 'only' the '"power button".
Keep holding on to the "volume down" button until a "warning screen" appears. Once it displays, press the "volume up" button and you should now be in 'Download mode'.
Hope this helps any new comers or anyone who have been having issues getting in to download mode with this phone. Happy flashing!

Thank you so much for this!
It helped me tremendously.

Thank you very, very much. I've also been concerned about diffs with the Canadian Koodo version. McS

Thanks very much
It worked after a few tries and was the last remaining piece of info I needed to root my phone. Been looking for hours for this gem!

lmfao relax. Hold your volume button down, hold the end key down(the button you hang up the phone with) then push the power button.
When your phone boot you should see a gray screen that say serial, plug your device into the computer and serial should change into usb. Then run the rom and there u go

Doesn't that trigger Ramdump mode (well, I don't know what that means, actually)?
All the OP needs is to go to Bootloader Mode to flash a ROM via USB. Bootloader is easily accessed by: Turn off phone, then press/hold Volume Down + Power button.
thanks guys, ive been using android, and never a minmo device, thanks everyone!!

Sortof. I just tried task29 for the first time a few days ago. I freaked out when I got in the same situation as him, but then read through the thread. There's the option of shutting the phone off, and pressing vol down + power key. I ended up doing vol down + power key + push reset with stylus at the startup screen. Simplest solution for me.
taking off the battery, istnt that simplest?
Amd here is the theme about this

In the very first posting of the Task29 thread, it says :
When phone boots to "Touch Pro 2" screen (or whatever your splash screen happens to be), I hold down the volume down button while hitting the reset button.

IMO, the smartest thing to do is when Task29 is near 100% (I think it pauses at around 96%), hold down the Volume Down button. That way, when the phone (tries to) reboots, it goes straight to Bootloader.
thanks all you have been more than helpful, ive been using this site for a while (for my android device) but just recently made an account. All of you keep on getting it done!!!
Moved as not ROM Development.

Hey, I have a Touch Pro2 and I tried the key combination above and it didn't work for me. I did get it to work however using the send key (green button) instead of the end key....
I.e, held volume down button, held send key and pressed power key once... ;-)
Phone MUST be off before doing the key combo...

Download Mode

I am having no luck getting my device into download mode (I can't believe it).
If I hold volume up, menu, and power button, 'samsung' in white letters just keeps flashing slowly.
if i let go of holding them, then it brings me to an android recovery screen.
any advice please?
edit: solved ---- thought it was volume up i was supposed to hold, but is volume down

Yep... Vol Down + Home + Pwr for Download mode. BTW, it's the HOME (center) button... not the Menu key.

THIS TRIC'LL DO IT, BUDDY..... SUGGEST NEXT TIME YOUSTAY CLEAR OF THE HIDDEN MENU THOUGH!!! UNFORTUNATELY YOU'LL LOSE ALL OF YOUR DATA..NO JUMPING THIS.
1. Start your phone up by holding onto both the power button and the buttom volume key. When the logo pops up, let go for a second, and hold onto both buttons again. This should bring up the option to reset your phone. Agree to both prompts.
2. You should be on a new screen. It may warn you not to touch the screen because it is calibrating or testing it. You will have to press OK, and then give it a few seconds to do that bit.
3. The screen should have a list of options at this point (some of which say "+power) on them. If you want to use any of these options, you need to hold the power button, and then press that option on the screen. Press "normal boot (+power)" (don't forget to hold the power button at the same time). This should put your phone back to normal, and set it up again just like it came out of the box.
ENJOY YOUR PHONE BACK

Hi. Try rebooting into recovery and factory reset. You can enter this by holding and pressing power, volume up, and home buttons all at the same time. Since your in a bootloop, hold power, volume up and down, and home button all at the same time until the screen goes black. Then quickly hold and press power, volume up, and home buttons. That should reboot into recovery. I'm unsure about using odin since there are no firmwares for T707A. To reboot into Download mode, hold power, volume Down, and home buttons all at the same time. Then on your PC, download and install Samsung kies and restore. Here's a video https://youtu.be/LqoX7wNhotk on how to. If that fails then your out of luck Hope this helps.
Got to odin mode, it says it is downloading do not power off
I assume, it is recovering and downloading the OS via ATT?
Ok, cant do this at work, will try when I get home, PM me your paypal account email for $20 if this works
or email it to me: gssp at mchsi dot com

Nah, it's just in download mode. You have run it through kies on your PC. Just watch the video. I cant guarantee it works as... there are no firmwares for T707A. Running kies might be the only way. If that fails, your gonna have to take it to att

Just edited my post. Autocorrect sucks. I cant be sure if you can get it recovered. There is no firmware available and I'm unsure if kies will work. If all that fails, then you might need to take it back to att
The T707A Tab S is not compatible with Kies,
To turn off from a boot loop, you must plug in power, hold down all: Volume up and down, home, power
Here is what fixed it, from a Samsung agent:
Cavin: Power the device off
Cavin: Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
Cavin: When the device vibrates; release only the Power key.
Cavin: When the Android system recovery menu displays; release the Volume Up and the Home key.
Cavin: Navigate with the Volume keys to the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power key to select.
Cavin: Navigate with the Volume keys to Yes-delete all user data option and press the Power key to select.
Cavin: After user data deletes, press the Power key to reboot system now.
Cavin: Are you able to follow the above steps?

What is the secret gesture to enter into Download/Recovery mode?

Hello,
Can someone give me the EXACT procedure to enter into Download and Recovery mode please?
If my tab (SM-T830) is switched off, and I switch it on by pressing Vol down + Power and I keep pressing both buttons, it will boot until the first splash screen (Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Powered by Android) then after this screen, it will reboot..
If I release buttons during this splash screen, it boots up normally
I already succeeded to enter to download or recovery modes before but I have no idea how. I guess I must release 1 or 2 button at the point but when ?
Thanks
Hello,
Hopefully this will be helpful, the following procedure worked for me:
make sure the tab is off
plug the USB cable in your tab (but not in your computer)
hold down both volume buttons together
plug the USB cable in your computer
then the tab start (you may release the buttons) with a menu allowing you to choose (Vol +/-) between download mode and reboot.

It works perfectly, thank! That's a weird way to go to DL mode but it works!
And once I'm already in DL (and flashed a tar with Odin), do you know how I can restart directly to Recovery mode without rebooting to system?

This is really late, but go to recovery and select download mode.
Power off
Hold down all three buttons (power, vol down, vol up)
Once it vibrates let go of power and vol down, continue to hold vol up. Never fails.

Did this several times exactly the same way it's described and it fails every single time. Other way worked perfectly and easily on my first try.
