[Q] MASSIVE video files.. why? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I own the Xperia Play R800 and since as far back as i remember whenever i record a video the file itself is humungous
For example a 20s video is 19.3MB big!
Even though i use the highest video quality how is it possible for the file to be so large?
Does anyone else share this problem?
Is there a way to reduce the file size without necessarily reducing the quality?
I use the "Camera Mod" to film but i don't think that changes anything
Whenever i want to send a video via the application WhatsApp i can't send a file longer than 15s as this would be larger than 15MB and that is the limit for that application.
How come my video files a 1s/1MB?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's devouring my memory.
thankyou thankyou thankyou :cyclops:

Thats not a problem. Because your recording either in 480p (2.3.3 firmware) or 720p (2.3.4 firmware) the higher pixels the more storage it takes. Besides thats normal video sizes your posting. If you want to correct this problem simply buy a bigger sd card.

thanks, but if that is the case how come no other phone has such big files.
Many of my friends have the Iphone 4 which i believe has higher video quality than the Xperia Play but much smaller video files

They probably have some type of compression

Besides reducing the quality of the video is there any application or anything i can do to reduce the video file size?

Compression is still reducing quality. If your asking if there a application that reduces video recording while filming on the phone then no. But you can move your recorded videos to a pc and compress it there and move back to the sd card then yes.

ok yep that's what i've done.
thanks for the help & info, appreciate it :cyclops:

Any chance someone could help me out.
I've tried the camera settings High (30 m), Low (30 m) and YouTube (High 10m) on my 'Camera Mod' app and either way the video files seem to be the same size. I'm assuming this as with either settings i can only send 15s of video via WhatsApp before it tells me "Size limit reached".
Am i doing it wrong? Am i changing the wrong settings?
I want to reduce the video quality & size.
Thankssss

I dont think u can change the size. But just curious, where exactly the default storage u set for the vid to be?? Phone or sdcrd???

HTC Desire Video Quality and Compression

Hey there,
In my experience, the Desire compresses the hell out of all recorded video, which makes it blurry. My girlfriend ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago, I recorded parts of it but people's faces looked like they had been blurred out digitally, or as taken from a Japanese 00's horror-flick.
I have the highest quality setting activated, as well as the MPEG4 encoding type selected. Still the Desire saves videos in the outdated .3GP-format that I had on my Sony Ericsson's six years ago, instead of as .MP4.
The file size of one minute of recorded video is about half the size of the same recording on my Nokia N97, and unfortunately, the quality is about half as well.
Is it just me, or does the Desire compress video way too hard? And why aren't they saved as .MP4 when the MPEG4 setting is on? Is there a tweak to decrease the compression ratio?
Thanks!

Neither .3GP or .MP4 are video formats - they are container formats (see here).
If you select MPEG4, it will be saving as MPEG4 within the 3GP container.
As to the actual recorded quality, I can't really comment as on the few occasions I've used it to record video, it looks ok to me.

Dave

Intriguing, I did not know that Thanks. Still bummed about the video quality, though. There ought to be a setting for those who prioritize quality and not small files.

We're supposed to be getting an update to support recording at 720p (as well as DivX). HTC announced this before the Desire had shipped, but has been curiously silent on the matter since then.
I did tweet @HTC about the lack of a DivX update, but @HTC only wants to respond to trivial nonsense it seems.
Regards,
Dave
Yeah I noticed they are quiet on that at the moment.
I wonder if they are planning it with the 2.2 update maybe?
hmm, I got a feeling they have trashed the 720p video quality update.
it has been silence about it for a long time:\
Froyo 2.2 will have the 720 option it was mentioned in the detailed Google IO paper. Along with better gmail. End calls with the power buttons. And app updates upposed to OS revisions.
The max option records at 2Mbps. You can get decent quality from that, most YouTube vids are far far lower. The framerate however differs depending on the ambient light but anything plus 15ish looks fine.

Is there even a "max" option for the video camera? If so, where is it located? I can only find a quality setting for the still camera. A 40 second video clip recorded with my HTC Desire is approx. 10MB. That's very far from 2 MB per second?

It's 2 Mbit /s (Mega bit), not MB (Mega Byte).
2mbps is not 2MB per second
its more like 256KB per second in the terms you're using

i use format factory free to download and only program which rips bluray rips .mkv to make it work for htc desire. You can choose from so many profile and test the settings which suits best to your mobile i believe res setting for htc desire are 400 by 800. i can send you setting i use. I ripped avatar blueray rip 8gb to 745mb with awesome quality. Give it a go you wont be disapointed and it supports subs. it basically supports all formats.
i just used MEGUI and it's iphone preset but left the res as 800xwhatever. AAC audio.
worked fine.
Format Factory sounds great with a whole bunch of the 23 reviews saying it has a trojan in the installer and also automatically installs the Ask Toolbar!
i myself megui for ripping but format factory is way easy to use. Megui is bit complicated program i do use it for ripping you can crop colour correction etc but megui takes longer to rip. i have found format factory to rip 720p rips perfect for my nokia n97 mini and desire.

I don't have one, and I can't be bothered to look for one either, but it was widely reported a few months ago.

You can use a free program called Mediainfo, take a few clips with diffrent settings and see the codec and bitrate.

I believe it was back when the Desire was the Bravo - there was alot of talk of 720p recording and the fact the hardware supports it

[Q] is it possible to get 720 p video working on the play

Hey guys is it possible to get 720 p video working on the play the hardware support so I think it wouldn't be hard to do

Yes, it is possible to have 720p video on your XPlay. Just make sure it's in .mp4 video format and it should play with no issues. I currently have Spartacus: Gods of the Arena in 1280x720 .mp4 videos on my SD card and I can watch them just fine!
I use moboplayer for playing 720p (mainly .mkv or .mp4) see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080194 kenshindono tested and provided a list of players.
I think he means in the camera! I think the Play has the same camera as the arc, which I think supports 720p. Hopefully someone can mod our camera to support it, not all too sure though!
it should definitely be possible, just needs to be enabled with custom software. would probably require a SD card with class 4 or higher, root and/or unlocked bootloader (which is not yet possible on the R800x, the one i have. :lame:

Indeed lol now that you mention it. Well shouldn't his question have been "Hey guys is it possible to record 720 p video on the play the hardware support so I think it wouldn't be hard to do"
i pretty sure it dosent need to be enabled, its just not availible in the stock camera app, try lg camera pro, i used to use that to record 720p on my desire before it had 720p officially
Unfortunately mine cannot play HD anime episodes smoothly (.mp4)

This thread was about 720p video recording not playback. The play does not have a screen capable of displaying HD video, so you might as well convert any video to the native res of the screen.

Arc Record Video in 1080??

no its not possible
because for recording in 1080p it is necessary that arc also play 1080p mp4 file.
i over clock arc to 1900 MG-HZ and play a 1080p mp4 song its played but problem in audio sync.
its not properly played mp4 1080p videos
and over clocking upto 1900 MgHZ also heat up the arc quickly
an other problem is that at this time we did not have a custom camera app for arc that have an option of making 1080p recording
i think if the Developers work on the Camera it will be available.
Cause the Xperia X10 have on Custom Firmware the function that he can record 1080 Videos.
basically i dont think its possible to take 1080p60 or 50 movies without big compression. Reason: you cannot write this amount of data fast enough to SD Card.
Maybe someting high compressed and interlaced might be possible, or only short time which are fitting onto internal memory and is moved after that to external.
But again, reading from SD card must be fast enough for playing them correctly (or fill up mobile memory.
for creating/viewing 1080p60 movies write and read speed has to be above 12MB/s (thats the datastream of the movie). this is also the reason why you cannot watch 1080p60 movies via Wireless G properly.
Sorry guys for wrong Category...
EDIT:
Moved to the right Category now...
Weird the iPhone 4S uses exactly the same camera, as the Arc, and it can record in 1080p....

Single core against dual core. iPhone 4s has more processing power in this case.
Im not really sure if this is the sole limiting factor though.

updated to 2.3.4, where's 720 video recording?

i saw that xplay will get hd, 720dpi video recording on 2.3.4 update... i just updated via pc companion but how the heck i'm supposed to switch to 720dpi?
I can only choose between high and low resolution, and neither of those looks like it's 720dpi...

It is, just check with Windows Explorer
It's definitely there - high quality option.
Think I'll make a video of it in action sometime soon.
all right, just checked a random video from the pc and it's 720dpi. All right i'm an idiot
But still i'd say it's pretty unclear. With stock sony ericsson camera (or heck i remember with some x10 custom roms having stock android camera recording too) you can select various pixel quality of the video, here with the play is just "high, low" quality but it doesn'e explicitly say what kind of quality is it.

In my opinion it's not even true 720p.
It's exactlyt the same resolution as it was before, but simply upscaled and output to a 720 resolution.
Making it a larger file for exact same quality.

Yeah, The Quality is the same as before, And you can render as 720p in Camtasia Studio or After Effects, etc, Wish SE loved us as much as they love Arc customers.

[Q] (Q) Video Recording 24fps

Good day everyone!
I was wondering if it's possible to change the framerate of our Xperia ZL to record video at 24fps.
I used to own an Xperia Mini Pro and what i did was to edit the media_profiles.xml file located on system/etc
but when i tried that on my ZL it did't work i got an error message that said "Camera not available"
I also tried using some apps like Camerapro and LG camera from the market but that didn't work either.
Does anybody know a way to modify the frame rate to record video at 24fps? or about an app that can do this?
Thanks a lot!

I would like to have the option. It gives the video a movie like effect 'cause movies are filmed with that frame rate

You won't see the difference between 24 and 25. 24 is just helpful if you want to combine your footage with other material in a 24 fps editing project in your editing software.
