[Q] 1st Gen Kindle Fire - Jelly Bean Battery Life Issue - Concern - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear XDA community,
First and foremost, I am happy there is an active Android community working to bring us some improvements for our 1st Gen Kindle Fire.
However, my concern has always been Battery Life. You see, it doesn't matter how cool Android is if lacking optimal battery life; so why aren't we focusing on that? Why isn't there a fix to give some of us the feeling of not having to charge our devices everyday (even if not using it)?
Having only joined XDA a few months now, I feel like this is nothing more than a gimmick a.k.a. spending more time fixing than using the device.
I have always been going after pure stock Android, modded by Hashcode. The last time I flashed Hashcode's latest JB 4.2.1 [12-18 Deep Sleep Fix], I felt like he was trying to throw an April's Fool but alas, it was in December of 2012. Will this thing ever get sorted out?
So, can anyone shred some light for this Android noob? Or should I go and lick Apple's butthole?
Sincerely,
Cason

Over time it will.
The thing is I have learned from my G1 until now is Cyanogen runs great on AOSP devices. On sense based ones or non AOSP phones it will run but there will always be something.
The stock Rom (modaco also) gives me best battery.
For cyanogen best way for it to run is on a Nexus device.

One cause of shorter battery life is the device not going into deep sleep when the screen is off. The JB ROMs are not too bad on the battery when your are actively using the tablet but WILL drain when it is sleeping, even more if it is not going into deep sleep. The drain when sleeping normally is = or slightly > 1% per hour but adds up real quick when you leave it sit for a day or two. I usually physically power off the device when not in use.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using xda app-developers app

for JB why does it always have to be 1% drop per hour when the device is not in use?

You could use another ROM from official CM. This is little better than Hashcode since its updated more than Hashcode’s and I find that the battery lasts quite a lot. SGT7 CM10.1 is quite good to me.

By the way I really liked your PM to me about Mics. I sarcastically liked it (dumbass).

UPDATE: After flashing Hashcode's stock Jelly Bean 4.2.2 AOSP, battery life consumption is much improved if the Kindle Fire is left in sleep mode with Airplane mode on. I tested mine by leaving it in sleep mode for 9 hours at full charge and lose only 1% of battery life.
Good News: if you are doing anything on your Kindle Fire without requiring a connection, it's best to put Airplane mode on, it doesn't drain battery as quick as with Wi-Fi on. At least you won't have to charge regularly.
Bad News: I know it is a hassle to do the above but it is much better now that you don't have to turn off your Kindle Fire after each use. Also, battery life consumption with Wi-Fi on during sleep mode still drain quite a bit. I left it for 6 hours 30 minutes at full charge and when I returned, battery life dropped to 92% (setting Wi-Fi as "only keep Wi-Fi on when plugged in).
The Badest Bad News: Using your tablet with Wi-Fi on is like playing a game on Kindle Fire, it drains the battery up the wazoo!!! I was only able to squeeze 3-4 hours at max using Google Play and web browsing.
All in all, let's hope the battery indicator is correct on the report. I'd like to give Hascode a big H-o-o-r-a-h for keeping me from flashing back to stock Kindle Fire purely for battery life.
Please, Hashcode, for the sake of love, improve battery life performance when "tablet is in use with Wi-Fi on". I won't forget about you for saving me from not having to purchase a Nexus 7 although I did have to lick Apple's butthole prior to this with my iPad 3 purchase.
Again, thanks and I'll be right here for the next update!

A couple days after you posted your first post, Hashcode released the MAJOR improvement with battery life in regards to JB. I also read that the frandom kernal implement found in one of TWA_priv's recent releases also adds to the battery life!

Has any of you thought of using a Amazon PowerFast Charger for the Kindle. It recharges the Battery really fast. Meaning you have to worry less about battery life.

Would that have the shorter charge time/shorter battery life time effect?

Same battery life time, but faster charging times. It charges the battery in 3 hours. If not you could buy a modded battery or a external battery.

When did your battery life start to get better?

I have had the phone for 5 days and with fairly light usage, I am still not getting good battery life. I turn off all data and wifi when not using it and screen on time is below 2 hours.

It doesn't get better...get used to it until its fixed in an update , along with the other big issues.

By about the 3rd day it seemed better. But it's also difficult to gauge because the first few days you're bound to toy with it constantly.
Until there is an empirical way to gauge usage, like an amp meter attached to the phone - it's all perception imo.

Do yourself a favor and try aokp milestone 1 from rootzwiki , and also download lean kernel 1.1.1 on xda. Use interactiveX governor for kernel. This is the exact setup I am using now, and have been for a few days and have been getting insane battery life. Hope everything works for you.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, it will get better, I won't bother explaining the science behind it considering you can do your own research, but it will, also, it can't be "fixed." Just like they can't make it an 8 mega pixel camera in an OTA. You can get it much better by doing custom roms and thigns of that nature.

It got better when I turned off vzw backup and google +.
Best I got is 16 hours bone stock just an extended battery. Worst I got was 4 hours(screen was on the whole time) watched 2 movies before I plugged in. I average around 12 hours from 100% to 20%.

First off, it's hard to tell by your screenshot how good or bad your battery life is. You're burning approximately 10%/hr, but maybe you had your screen on or were surfing the internet for a portion of that time. Anything that involves data transfer will kill your battery faster.
I got my Galaxy Nexus on Wednesday, and I've had great battery from the start. I calibrated it by letting the phone's initial charge die down to zero, and then charged it all the way up to 100%, and then used the Battery Calibration tool. I drain between 2-3% hour with light use, but can obviously drain much more depending on what I'm using the phone for.
That being said, for those on this board who think an OS upgrade is going to fix the problem, I highly doubt it. I have a reasonably poor cell signal (averages around -95 dbm), but still get solid battery life. Given that we were all issued phones with the same software, if you're experiencing incredibly bad battery life, I'm going to point my finger at the hardware. It just doesn't make sense that some of us with 4.0.2 get great battery life, and others do not. You probably have either a bad battery or a bad phone. Now, I'll probably get called out for saying this, but watch all the posts that follow when the update releases, when people still have poor battery life.
This is my 3rd Android phone (Incredible, Charge, GN), and every one of these phones has had poor battery life. On average, if I'm playing around with the screen on, I'm draining upwards of 10%/hr, if not more. But if you properly calibrate the battery - which is VERY important - you should easily be able to get a full day's charge out of your phone.
There is a post on XDA about the 13 steps to proper battery calibration. Once I followed it on my last phone, my battery life went up at least 50%. You have to let the battery drain to 100%, then bump charge a number of times, then use the battery calibrator.

Try running without JuiceDefender. Constantly toggling data on and off (or wifi on and off) actually hurts battery in almost all cases.

Your results may vary, but when I used Juice Defender or Green Power on my Droid Charge, I nearly doubled the battery life. I haven't put it on my GN yet because my battery life is much better than what I had with the Charge.
No using JD or anything like that. Just the the phone do its thing. I don't even open the multitask button unless I want to switch between apps.

Gotta be a software issue with the battery.
Just this past weekend in Wash DC. Very strong 4 G market.
I had it fully charged off charger. After 7 hours without touching the phone even with google plus sign out, the battery went from 100% to 54%. It's like the phone was active a lot without me even touching it. No SMS/mms either. No emails either.
Know. I did same thing and put it on airplane mode with it 100% charged. After 7 hours on airplane mode it was at 98%.
So it's gotta be an operating system issue.
I tried it on wifi instead of 4G mode. And battery drainage was down to 72% after no use overnight.

charging KF

When i had stock ROM, charging was fast. It would get fully done in 3hrs.
Now i have jb jandycane, it is painfully slow using the standard wall charger that came with KF.
Next i thought i would make it a dual-boot with Modaco's Stock ROM. There is absolutely no change?
can anybody suggest any ways to improve charging speed? if all ROMs are going to be like this, then i am switching to Stock ROM.
It is ridiculous to charge for 16hrs and drain the battery in 4hrs. It is not practical.
I made it a habit to plug-pull-plug. I noticed that this gave me normal charging. Going back to the original chopped gingerbread is out of the question for me. I would regret not saving another 200 to get an ipad. So I like my kindle that is not like a kindle.

Unfortunately, I think it might be something specific to you Kindle. I am running the new cm10-sgt7 jb ROM and I can recharge in about 3 hours depending upon the level discharge. Have you used an app like cpuSpy to see if your kf is going into deep sleep?

i think it is specific to this jb jandy cane ROM. After going to Modaco altrom( i have dual boot setup), KF does charge fast. May be i had to boot into Modaco couple of times.
So, looks like I have to reboot into Modaco to charge.
I use Rom cm7 and just charge in 3 hours. I thinks you should change otherbRom version.

Battery usage of android 4.1

I switched to jellybean (android 4.1) recently. The system is great. However it drains the battery much more than cm7. During a night the battery can reduce from 80 to 60. Is it normal? If not is there solution to extend battery usage?
Unfortunately, that is normal. Turning the fire off can save the battery, but I just charge it everyday. Compared to rooted stock, battery usage increases between 10 and 20 percent for me under normal use.

According to Better battery stats, most of the drain on my Kindle is caused by AudioOut2 wakelock. I failed to resolve the issue and i'm not sure what is causing it. I would like to know if anyone else experienced similar issues.
IMHO, it must be sort of a bug since JB is fairly new and devs need time to resolve all the issues.

That's not normal for a standby... it should be <5% ...not the mention that device does not have to communicate with 2G/3G networks (unlike smartphones), and on my smartphone i get average of about 3days (medium usage, light on wifi) without recharging
It's a bug - some process prevents device to go to sleep (aka. wakelock) which causes drain. I expected at least 2-3 days on a single battery charge, and tbh, recharging it daily is little bit disappointing Something tells me it's a kernel bug since i encountered it on every CM10 rom so far :S

Well coming from an previous ICS build it's a major improvement. Typically the battery life from ICS builds(That I used, Energyrom, AOKP Kindle Edition, GedeRom) would drain 20-30% nightly like the OP said, so coming from there it seems like JB fixed whatever was killing the battery. I can probably go a week with light usage on my kindle before I recharge it. ICS in general drains the battery on any device. I used to get 5 days on my Droid 1 running CM7. With ICS I'll go through 3, though I never want to go back to Gingerbread, hahahaha.

My record for battery on a smartphone is 6 days... using ICS
Anything that drains battery more than 1% in 1.5/2 hours in standby is bad, no matter what OS version...
I also have the impression that on a fully working Jellybean ROM, battery usage is more intense than on a stock ROM. I still prefer the advantages of the new ROM, and also charge daily. Being mobile, I use the XTPower MP-10000 Powerbank, which gives more than enough battery life and charges the kindle while in use to 100% full. This has resolved the issue of battery drainage for me.

Fire HD 8.9 battery life after CM10/10.1 installation

Since there is no Q&A sub-forum for HD 8.9, posting here.
I am planning to buy Fire HD 8.9 for my parents and was wondering about battery life. How much of an impact do you guys see with CM10 or CM10.1 over stock with regular use?
I have an HP Touchpad with CM10 and battery life is really bad compared to original WebOS, which is okay with me as a power user but my parents might not like charging a tablet twice every day.
Thanks.

No. Never more than 9 hours here. Usually I read stories with about 10% screen brightness for about 5 hours and 3 hours for web surfing before I see battery low. I renamed phone.apk and phoneprovider.apk as I saw cell standby is listed number 1 in battery usage. Some people say they don't affect battery but I disabled them anyay. The good thing is this one charges faster than ipad.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD using Tapatalk 2
from my experience, battery life is good on normal use, on par with stock OS(less than 10%/hour on reading/web).
however, horrible battery drain happens on standby, about 0.5%-1% per hour -- the tablet loses 1-2 hours usable time each day when its in idle.
to compare, on stock OS stock settings, its about 3% per day,
and once I disabled most amazon services, the standby power usage is unnoticeable, sometimes I even see a battery increase when wake up....
Thanks. The battery drain on idle is an issue for my Touchpads as well with CM10, never lasts more than 30 hrs with just WiFi on and everything else off, including screen.
Since CM / ROMs are for power users I don't think battery optimization is much of a priority to the devs. My father isn't going to use it more than 2-3 hours in 2-3 days and then it doesn't turn on at all after 3 days even if it was 100% when he put it down, he might get alarmed.
Thanks, I'll stick to the stock if I go with HD 8.9.

[Q] [q] Is this what a dying battery looks like?

I noticed when I was looking at battery stats (trying to figure out what's eating the battery; very little in the way of apps installed)
I bought the phone last week, but I bought it used on eBay. It came with the original box and the manufacture date is 6/30/12, so I figure this was someone's everyday device for 10 months.
The reason I ask is that sudden dip from 20 to 30%. And the other reason I ask is that I only get about 10 hours with 3 hours of screen-on time on a full charge. If the battery is just losing capacity, that's fine - I'll get a ZeroLemon 2300maH battery and I should get much better life. If the battery still has close to full capacity, then I'll get an extended-capacity battery. I just need some guidance as to whether or not it's crapping out so I have a better idea of what to buy.
Thanks!
Jump is weird. Could be the battery is flaky. But I would make effort to reseat it. I want to see what BetterBatteryStats says about that terrible wakelocking, though.
You can delete batterystats.bin from /data/system. Everyone says it does nothing. But I do it anyway. Because I can.
My stock battery usually gives me 7-8hrs of standby and 3hrs of screen time.
Zerolemon 2300mah gives me 20hrs of standby and usually 5hrs of screen time.
You can check in the accessories section in the zerolemon 2300mah that I've posted some of my results via screenshots.
About the dip, I'm not sure I've never noticed that on any of my batteries.

Jump has been there consistently. Had the phone 4 days, and every day when it hits 30% it drops to 20%.
Installed Betterbatterystats and I'll see what's keeping it awake. It does seem to be awake an awful lot compared to my old Atrix (switched to T-Mobile a month or so ago, and just got the phone after I was switched for a bit), which got way better battery life.
10 hours with 3 hours of on screen time is just about average for the stock battery.
I would recommended getting the zero lemon 2300 mAh slim batteries if you're lucky enough to place an order for them. They only restock in small amounts and they disappear quick.

Well that's good to know. They're in stock right now on Amazon so I'll pick up the 2-pack with the charger.
OK so far the phone has spent half its time unplugged staying awake, and about half of that is being caused by DeskSMS. I got a trial a long time back and decided not to bother because I didn't use it, and when my google account restored to the phone, it apparently got installed and I didn't notice. I've uninstalled that and we'll see what else happens. Very thankful for the BetterBatteryStats suggestion; I'd never heard of it.
Well the battery is lithium ion. With repeated charging the battery loses capacity. If the battery is the one that came with the phone, buy a new stock one for cheap off Amazon. That is if you use NFC and have a certain fitted case. If not, go for an extended battery by reviews on Amazon and XDA. My battery is from December and I haven't noticed any decrease yet. The temperature of which your phone runs and the temperature of the environment also effect battery life.

Great news, everyone. Desk Sms was the culprit all along. This is 3 hours of Netflix and then sleep over night. Just a couple wake locks that I can attribute to emails received overnight.
So out turns out the battery other than the weird drop, at least with the power saver on.
Thanks in particular for the Better Battery Stats suggestion. Without it I would have been majorly confused.

Glad you were able to get it all figured out. Wakelocks are VERY annoying. Search for kms.apk if Mediaserver is ever draining your battery in the future, it is a common battery draining problem as well.
If you're on TouchWiz using Power Saver, I'd recommend disabling it. It throttles your CPU in half. This may cause instability, or overheating problems or sometimes even battery drain ironically. I do however recommend, KT747 kernel with changing govs, and I/O scheduler and using Team Kernelizer tweaks. Try Eugene's CPUSleeper and it may help put DeskSMS to sleep for good. And how could I forget? Definitely try Greenify. It makes apps behave akin to iOS devices. Best of luck.

The problem with Greenify, in this case, is you can't hibernate apps that send notifications, or you will never get them.
The power saver doesn't bother me. Being in the notification area makes it easy to toggle and performance has been fine. Better Battery Stats says it gets up to 1 GHz Mac and that is plenty on the web or Facebook or Netflix.
I had assumed the media server popping up was due to Netflix streaming. It hasn't been back today since recharging. If it comes back I'll look more at disabling. Today battery life has been great. 12 hours with 2 hours of on time and at 45 percent. I definitely over reacted to the drop and it must have been Desk SMS which never should have been installed.

If anyone has any issue with their battery sprint corp stores have a tester takes about ten min. They won't have a problem doing it if you're nice, sprint or not. It will either end up excellent marginal or poor... they don't charge for the test.
