A one stop modification app... why not in Android?

So just wondering, why is it in Android the only way to apply hacks is through flashing zip files? Personally, I hate this method with a burning Passion haha. If you look at iOS or webOS, they have cydia and preware, and just use repository and download, install, restart springboard/luna. I want this on Android so bad, one app for all cross ROM compatible apps/hacks/themes/mods. Now I love ROM manager, but I feel it has more potential.
Please don't take this as me bashing the devs, I love there content, I just despise the method of installing it .

CM7 allows you to install themes, hide the clock/show battery percentage on the status bar, as well as lockscreen tweaks. There are 4 different ones and you can even add custom sliders that launch the activity of your choice. All without flashing zips in recovery. Pretty comprehensive if you ask me.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean... kind of, I mean an app that downloads these mods from the internet, installs them, then just does a hot boot if necessary, and looking at cyanogenmod, some don't require a reboot. Maybe what I'm asking is just stupid, but I really don't like sifting through a whole bunch of forums to find a little clock, put it on a app described as above, I install, done no hassle. I love sense, and for somereason cannot use stock anymore ha.

It would be cool if something like Cydia did exist.

What you are asking for is pretty much impossible. It's easy on those two platforms due to the similar form factors and only one company making hardware. Think about that. Good idea, but I also like the fact that there are zillions more options. Sure IOS and WebOS may be easier, but are far more limited customization wise. WebOs mainly due to the scene not being as big as Android and IOS is well self-explanatory.

[Q] What you like seen in the next major update to ICS?

There is no denying that ICS is a major step forward for android phones (and it is awesome!) but what feature etc. do you feel should be included in the next major update?
One thing I would like is a quick access button to toggle the auto-rotate screen on and off! I use my phone a lot in bed and it`s imposable to use the phone with auto-rotate on (as with many smartphones I have tried).

download a widget app like Widgetsoid. You can make yourself an auto-rotate on/off widget

USB host OTG (promised but not delivered).
Syncing of the default browser with Chromium or Chrome.

I'd like to see some Siri competition.

Onboard external storage with ssd speeds. Even tighter and consistent integration with hardware and software. Methinks there is still going to be a clusterfuck of hardware and software still to come. Oem overlays should be optional and/or pick and choose what you like from their launcher. Still boggles my mind people buy a samsung or motorola phone and want sense on their rom. No sense if you ask me.

Syncing already works for bookmarks with chrome.

I want the stock Gallery App to be as smooth and as quick just like the rest of the OS. How come when you flick through photos and do pinch to zoom it's still sluggish just like on Android 2.2? Can't it be fast like the Browser?

Cannot think of much anything major yet, but here some minor ones:
The Google search bar is really unnecessary.
A disable option for the shutter sound would be nice but I guess they don't have it for legal reasons.
Maybe a pre-loaded plain black wall paper.

I would like to see integration with google talk throughout the device. I woild love for it to be like bbm/imessanger. I use it a lot and feel like it has great potential.

BBM and iMessage work because the only devices that can communicate via those methods are the mobile phones themselves.
Google Talk works with computers too. Meaning that there is a large margin for disjointed conversations where part of the conversation is completely lost and unable to be referenced without getting the other person to repeat themselves.

I'd be surprised if they took that out - where when the phone is in silent/vibrate there is no shutter sound. That's how it's always been on my OG Droid, especially back when it was stock.

Or simply have it do exactly what it does now, and sync conversations across devices? All that needs to be done is have Android device detection, like iMessaging, so that sms conversations automatically switch to Talk (or a rebranded version of Talk).

Regarding shutter sound: Can't we just rename/delete the soundfile, so it cannot be played? What's the filename and where do I find it?

I don't quite understand. Why is it that when you bring computers into this equation, part of the conversation is liable to being lost?

There is an app called Smart Rotator which I use to only allow certain apps (ie Gallery) to autorotate. Very handy.

i wonder how ICS's keyboard is like.. Particularly, the horizontal keyboard. For some reason, in many of the text fields when using (practically) any type of keyboard, default, swiftkey, (and i don't remember the names of the other ones that i've tried in the past), the horizontal keyboard does not show the background at all. It makes a big text field of the field that you are typing and the touch keyboard takes up the rest with the "next" or "done" at the top right.
It's extremely un-user friendly. I want the apple style keyboard where regardless which orientation you are in, you can still see half of the keyboard, AND add a row to show all of the corrections/suggestions.
Hope that's in ICS, if not, please make it happen in the next update!

Besides it being new what are you really gaining. Tons of apps don't work on it. Besides folders and multitasking I don't even know what I'm really gaining. And if I have to lose one feature my phone has now ill pass. Phone works too good right now and ics theme will hold me over for a long time.
I understand everybody wants what is new but think about everything your really gaining. To me its like IOS 4.3 to 5. I upgraded my Ipad 2 lost jailbreak for what I see as a minor upgrade.

I can't speak for everyone else but I bought my phone because it was at the time of purchase ahead of every curve (with the exception of nfc) so now that something is out that can make the phone better why the would I not want it. I'm patient in waiting but would love to have it yesterday

Thanks to the informative Android blogs and tons of videos, most people know why they want ICS besides having a new look. As for your Ipad and losing jailbreak, you probably should have read in advance to see what features iOS 5 had before taking the plunge. I remember reading multiple times that people with jailbreak should hold up on iOS 5 until an untethered jailbreak is done. But hey, this is about Android

What I'm really waiting for is a nice AOSP ICS with everything working. I am less enthusiastic about TW ICS.

Hmm... OP you should consider the fact that ICS source was only recently released and I think the Nexus Prime launched just today. Of course not all apps are going to work you have to give app developers time to update the apps to be compatible. It's not all going to happen overnight that's why these things take time for the transition. Although I'm a little disappointed that TW covers up some features, I am looking forward to:
*Scrollable widgets
*The swipe gesture to remove notifications
*New notification bar Info slots (i.e. when you get a text you see the contact pic)
*Face Unlock (even though it can be bypassed it's cool nonetheless)
*Camera Speed
*New widget placement UI
*New Cool Blue Look
*The drag and drop feature to make folders
*How the app market stays in the app drawer on the top right
*The minimalist layout of all the Google Apps
*A few other things I'm sure everybody knows by now...
Not to say that you have poor judgment, I do advise reading up a little more on the updates before you jump in and discredit them for changing anything. I think Google is actually just trying to make Android more accessible to more than just Devs, if anything at least give them credit for that.

Guys all I'm saying is it seems like alot of people want ics just because and are foaming at the mouth for it. Isn't alot of your apps not working kinda a big deal. People should just calm down enjoy gingerbread for a few more months.

Improved multitasking is enough for me....a better looking OS.....speed.....better hardware acceleration...more efficient......data monitoring.......ability to block certain apps from accessing data and last but not least.............camera app (that thing needed updating)
ICS is what Android needs to be to fully compete with IOS the only real threat(since Isheep see differently). I am not too anxious to see TW and Sense on ICS

I have to agree with OP,to a certain extent. A lot of the new features are incremental, and I think you can duplicate most of them with already available apps/mods. Not to say I'm not going to flash ICS as soon as a good rom comes out, but I am pretty satisfied with how my phone runs now. ICS is the first step to integrate the Android phone /tablet os, like ios ,and will be much better as it evolves.

Sure, you may be able to replicate some of those features with other apps, but thats the point... it brings these features to stock android.

Many of the things that you've listed can already be achieved or are part of the Galaxy Nexus and not ICS. Just kind of goes to reinforce the idea that most people really don't know why they want ICS. I personally find ICS to be a bit too intrusive into my privacy, especially seeing as in the recently used app overlay it shows you the last picture you took. Definitely not appealing to people in relationships.

Although I do see your point, the OP asks why I want ICS. I'm entitled to my opinion right? and I noticed the majority of the things you quoted and responded to have to do with modding the system in some way. How about having it all in one package and not having to download a bunch of apps to imitate what should come stock in the OS.
And what's wrong with a little "extra glamour" ?

I just want stock Gingerbread with better battery life and no CarrierIQ. I don't know how much faster people need these little computers to be but the E4GT is fast enough.

It's so stupid that people have to root their phones in order to get these features. I understand that maybe Google doesn't want Android to seem overly complex, but have a Customization area all in a submenu that you can unlock buy sliding Customizations to ON.
Things like this (in order of necessary > bloat):
Global volume rocker as cursor movement keys (hope this baby is patented so Apple doesn't steal it!)
% battery icon
Brightness slider toggle + AOKP toggles!!!!

Volume panel
Custom targets on lockscreen ring
Custom notification LED colors >> this would really make the hardware unique from Apple and it's really handy, esp when you're in meetings / theaters / church / or any quiet time; the different color assignments are really useful! Even vibrate is now disruptive in meetings.

Show notification count
Custom colors for Nav Bar
I don't think that's so much that it would overwhelm the average user. Whenever a family member or friend sees our phones, they want me to root theirs and make it the same.
Maybe someone at Google can get this message and we can see this in 4.2? They could release it as a "Android Power Toys" add-on type marketing the way Microsoft did with Windows?

I'm sure there are a number of reasons. First many of these things can be done with third party apps. Google mainly keeps to things that have to be built into the os, or related to Google services.
They have incorporated some features like additional lock screen targets, some toggles on tablets, resizable widgets, ect. It sounds like themes may be coming in 4.2 too.
Another thing I've noticed is while these features are great, they do slow things down a bit, so they may not be beneficial to everyone.
I'm fine with getting these features from other sources of they can put out things like project butter and Google now.

Nexus owners comprise a very small segment of the Android population, and Google develops the device with root users, ROM devs, and themers in mind...meaning, they know we're going to change our devices ourselves (which is part of the fun), so they may not find all of those changes necessary for the Nexus line.
As it pertains to Android in general, I think manufacturer skins (Touchwiz, Sense, Blur) would be the primary deterrent. Google would spend all that time, developing features, that manufacturers would either alter or delete entirely, meaning Google had wasted time and man-hours on developing those additions.
However, word on the street is that LG is getting the Nexus next, but that all manufacturers will also have the ability to make a Nexus device, provided they follow Google's guidelines. This means Nexus devices in the hands of more end users, and possibly, an increased impetus for Google to incorporate some of the features you mentioned. I think we'll see 4.2 and 5.0 implementing some massive changes to the system, in regards to customization and personalization.

I wonder if they are not included for the sake of simplifying the OS for the average user. It's a lot easier to get someone to just add a widget to add functionality than to explain to them how to enable weather on the lock screen or how to pick which pull-down toggles they want. A lot of those options are redundant because you can access them with widgets on the launcher.

That makes sense, but honestly, how many Nexus owners do you know that fit into the "average user" category? I know 35 people who own a Nexus device, and only 3 of them aren't rooted. In general Android terms, you're probably 100% correct though...most "average users" would not know what to do with some of those changes, and many would consider them bloat. Geez, Google's even removed Maps from Gapps, because people thought it was bloatware, so they are sensitive to that issue.

I agree, what prompted this post was the AOKP toggles, that's what people like the most when they see mine and my gf's phones.
Also, I agree that it's bloat. But, that's why they can release it in the Play Store as a "Power Toys for Android" add-on. It makes it easy for average users to get access to these features and they don't have to root and they don't have to play the milestone game waiting for a stable daily driver.

The launcher is a great idea too. I forgot to mention that. However, Nova launcher is easy for the average user to install. You don't even need to be rooted.

Very true, but most normal Android users simply run the out-of-the-box setup from day one, until the day they upgrade. If Google took the time to build a slightly better launcher, those of us who want extra customization (grid size, icon editing, etc) can have it, while those who run stock from day one, won't even notice the changes, because they'll never use them.

Looks like Google might be one step ahead of us.

The great thing about open source is that sharing is what it is all about. If you don't like sharing, then there are two other clubs to join. Both of which could be more awesome if they didn't take the mine all mine approach.

Perfect example is SMS quick reply, I'd say that's a dead cert as the immediate reaction to JB notifications was fantastic but let me do even mooaaar!!!

Well I think its important to note that even if Google wanted to implement some of these features commonly found on custom ROMs that it'd take more than just one version of Android to bring them in.

I use multi-window a lot on my Note 3.
I thought it was an Android feature.
Apparently it's a proprietary software not an Android feature.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they're is a way to get multi-window on the find 7.
I looked up omniRom. It looks like but it'll require rooting. I don't like rooting.
I'm not trying to be contrarian.
I was literally about order the Find 7 (not 7a) but then realized I have to sacrifice multi-window.
I'm using MW right now. Reading chats in what's app & writing this.

You couldn't have read too much because you cannot order the 7 yet. They haven't even announced when you might be able to put in your pre order. The outfit making the screens has just gone into production which implies the wait will be at the least several more weeks and more likely later. They answered an email asking with an early June estimate.
As to being a deal breaker that's in your court. I won't own a phone without root myself, that is one of my deal breakers. We each make our choices...

No one asked you if it a deal breaker to you.
It's a deal breaker to people who require a multi-window feature.
Clearly we have identified oppo fanboys.

I never said I was going to buy the phone and haven't made up my own mind. I find it a little disconcerting that the app storage is quite low and surprisingly it cannot be easily reformatted as I expected. Or at least previous offerings and the 7A cannot be easily repartitioned. I also am a bit surprised that they are not shipping on 4.4X since a pilot version of it would have been available to them quite a while ago. Considering the fact that they have just finished their latest skin for 4.3 you have to figure it may be a while before you see 4.4X on this phone.
As to your response I don't need to ask permission on a public forum to speak my mind and I don't care what you did or did not ask. My response was directly to the point, you have made your choice and its as valid as mine. It is as you say a deal breaker for you but you are the only person you speak for, others can speak for themselves. I also you use multi window which I will simply add if I decide to buy in here. Many will do the same meaning its not a deal breaker for them either. Course some don't use it and don't care. We all make our choices. Think before you type.

Have you tried "Multi Window - Multi Browsing" in the play store. I understand it is a partial solution only.
I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, nice (never used S-Pen ever except to try it) but wanted 4.4 so bought an Sony Xperia Ultra GPE (Now that could use multi-window). Went to a new HTC One M8 (a phone again).
I will pick up an Oppo Find 7 (not 7a) when available. Specs look great (and obviously I'm a gadget geek).
So I would say try the "Multi Window - Multi Browsing" app on the Note 3, just to kick the tires.

I will definitely install exposed, and that's a great solution. (Doh). The issue with exposed is that it requires root. It is a good reason alone to root (but there are other good reasons as well).

People can correct me if I'm wrong, but when you are rooted the ability to deny apps root requests isn't that a security plus.

I've got multi window running with xposed on my moto g. The screen size can't make the most of it but you can change the window sizes, swap them about etc

Not on all versions, Moto G doesn't have it but you can get that version or another from closed, you choose.....

Not yet, it's unofficial and not yet merged. I've been including it in the test builds but it won't be in nightlies.
(Why? Try using G+ when the device is in landscape... Or just do a portrait/landscape transition. Those are the two main issues that have prevented merging.)

There is sense.
I use multi window like hell on my note 3.
I won't even say once or twice a day.
I can say I use it most of the day because I use WhatsApp a lot.
So I continuously have whats app & RSS reader or the browser or youtube open at the same time.
I watch youtube while chatting. I cannot imagine having to leave youtube, go to whats app, write a reply, go back to youtuve, wait for buffering, watch 5 seconds, then go back to whats app, then back to YouTube, buffering. :silly::silly::silly:

So, just stick with your note 3 and leave us here playing with our device calmly.
We not really care about daily usage. We just play the device software.
When we getting boring with a rom, we change it to other rom. and that's it.
That is how the flasher live everyday. Never stick to one kind of features. lol :silly:
