so what i want to do is root the device, use triangle SU and then flash the stock rom
HOWEVER CWM doest root the device....
I'm using odin to flash it, and it does, but then instead of rooting on the device it just goes straight into phone, and the super user app isnt there....

Just download:cfautoroot or the root package, and flash it through odin=>pda=>file=>flash! That should root the device

you need to press power button + home button + volume up... once the phone restarts and you see the samsung screen release the buttons and you will be in recovery mode.

I am new with rooting my phone. I have used Rooted phones before, I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258633 Motochopper how to. I ran into a problem. I click the superuser app that was installed onto my phone, and it tells me that "The Superuser binary (su) must be updated. Please choose an installation method. Recovery mode installation is recommended for HTC devices." I click install and it tells me there was an error. I would like to root my phone along with potentially installing CWM so that I can easily install Cyanogenmod when they release a stable verison for the S4. Also would love to install titanium backup along with some Adfree apps.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
OK, so it looks like you already have it rooted.
When super SU asks that question, dont install via CWM, tell it to just install normally.
Once you have SuperSU working, Download Rom Manager from the play store and install CWM Recovery right from within the ROM Manager app.
It will give you the option to pick between two types of CWM(ClockWorkMod). The Touch version, like its name gives you the ability to use the touch screen and not only the volume up/down + Power button.
Telling it to install normally causes it to just tell me there was an error, it also tells me it is out of date as well. Titanium Backup tells me that it cant get root access and I was never asked about it.
OK, so your phone is not rooted then.
Your going to have to try rooting it again or flashing an already rooted rom with Odin.
I just tried it again, this time it said failure after the install of the superuser.apk. I just read that one of the later updates by samsung can make it harder to root. I just got my phone and i was fully updated. What Roms, are already rooted for the S4. I am actually enjoying some of the default apps that came with the phone.
Wicked (and most ROMs that don't include the [STOCK] tag) are pre-rooted...but you'll need to ODIN a custom recovery first then flash the ROM.
If you want to stay on rooted stock, follow the steps in the "root May 7 MDL" thread to ODIN a rooted kernel, and you'll be good to go.
(You don't need root access to get a custom recovery flashed)
Basically, any of your options are pretty straightforward, but they're going to involve Odin-ing stuff.
So there isn't really a way to just root my phone without installing a custom rom?
There was before the second update, with the second update rooting got just a little bit more steps

So is there a way to keep it stock but root it? What are the other steps I would have to take. Why does Samsung not like people rooting their phones, I thought carriers were the ones that hated people rooting their phones

Are you still on the MDB firmware or have you done any over the air updates? Specifically the May 7 update which is MDL. Motochopper is specifically for then older firmware (MDB) and it won't work if you are already on the updated. MDL firmware. In which case you would have to follow these instructions to acquire root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41162041
I usually use a market app called root checker to quickly check if I do have root.
And yes you can be rooted on stock.

Root checker says no root. I believe it does have that over the air update installed. T Mobile updated it when they gave me the phone, because they thought I didn't really know anything about phones. I assume this means I have to follow another method to root my phone?
If you have the MDL update you have to root using the steps listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268880
Easily done, just a few more steps.

This is going to sound like a dumb question but from reading all of that I need to use ODIN to install the ROOT_M919?UVUAMDL onto the phone? that should root the phone and allow me to install ROM Manager and install CWM from there right?
Also would doing this delete everything I have on my phone right now?

No, you use Odin to install one of the recoveries. You use the recovery to install the zip ROOT_M919?UVUAMD. Personally I didn't use that file. I installed the kernel in recovery and SuperSU in recovery. And no, it won't delete things on your phone.

Thank you so much, I am about to go and do this. I will use the kernel you suggested since that looks like a better option, after flashing the kernal should i reboot and just use it normally for a bit and then go to recovery and flash SuperSU?
EDIT: The steps on the thread for ODIN are for installing a rooted ROM, I am assuming its still the same steps for installing a recovery instead of a rooted ROM

Okay I didn't get any error using ODIN, however when I try and boot into CWM using Volume Up + Power it just goes to android recovery. Which doesn't have any of the options I need. Am I just booting up the wrong way, or did I do something wrong. I tried both the touch version and the non-touch version

2 options. uncheck auto reboot in Odin. When Odin is done, unplug your phone, pull your battery, then boot into recovery. Or .. when Odin is done and it reboots your phone, keep holding volume up to get to recovery.

I was going to unroot my galaxy grand 4.2.2 I also reset my binary counter to 0 from 1 but now I changed my mind and don't want to unroot my device. Will it effect my device or I should complete unroot it and then root it again?

No it will not effect your device, you would simply need to gain the root access again.
If you are getting No Command in CWM recovery mode, it means your recovery doesn't have proper permissions, so simply flash this zip and reboot into recovery - View attachment Fix-Recovery.zip

If you are flashing a custom ROM then root access will already be there.
But if you want to do it on your own, just flash UPDATE-SuperSU.zip from here (works on any ROM) - http://download.chainfire.eu/381/SuperSU

As long as you are on 4.2.2 stock and you have a custom recovery installed, it should flash GENNXT without problems.

Mine Note II is SGH-I317M with baseband version of I317MVLUCMK5 and KNOX.
I have tried CF-Auto-Root and Root SuperSU but weren't able to root my note II.
I have tried using different version of Odin, reinstalled the USB driver and tried using philz touch and cwm6 root to backup and root.
Nothing worked........Can't even start SuperSU.....
KNOX keep giving me security notice "An attempt to access a secure area on your device without authorisation has been blocked."
I also tried an updated Superuser. Still nothing worked....
Any idea anyone?
Thank you very much.

This is really weird, when I did this to my SGH-I747/M it was updated to stock 4.3 so it had KNOX and I got the same message as you but to disable it, all I did was open SuperSU and it prompts me to disable KNOX and then it's "fully" rooted and I could install a custom recovery after that.
I know it worked on the S3 because it's currently rooted running a custom ROM. Are you using the right version of Odin? I was trying to use 1.85 I think it was and it wasn't working at first, I tried 3.09 and it worked like a dream.
Did you remember to go into the Security Settings and turn off Reactivation Lock? I know this can play a factor when rooting with KNOX.
Also, KNOX never goes away, even though I'm running an AOSP ROM now on the S3, it still shows the KNOX counter with 0x1, even with it disabled. I can also not get any ROM's lower then 4.3 to work anymore so I can no longer run RootBox 4.2.2 on the S3.
I'm not sure if it's just me, or just my phone, but since that KNOX update was already on it when I got the phone used, it will not let me go to any ROM's lower then 4.3

hey man i have the same phone as you, just found an easy way to root it after struggling. Just updated to Stock 4.3 Bell Firmware using odin, completely fresh phone.
How to root it:
1. Flash philz recovery in odin "philz_touch_6.19.3-t0lteatt.tar.md5" (Download mode= Vol Down + Home + Power)
2. Reboot back into android once
3. Power off phone
4. Boot into recovery (Vol Up + Home + Power)
5. Goto philz settings->Reroot rom (or something to that effect)
6. Recovery will tell you done, and to reboot and install SuperSU from Play Store
7. Reboot download and install SuperSU from Play Store
8. Open SuperSU it will immediately ask if you would like to disable Knox.. say yes
9. Done

Does this work?
My wife's Rogers note2 is bone stock running I317MVLUCMK5.
She is paranoid about Knox and possibly killing her phone.
She wants me to get it rooted, but I'm struggling to find a clear cut answer.
Also, it would be better if anyone knows how to (if possible) downgrade to 4.1.2 and start from there... As I know how to do that one like the back of my hand.

Simple. First get the root. Like the su binary and stuff. once you are rooted get suersu. What I mean by first get root is literally get root through a program or something. After this you will have root but you wont have root access. So get supersu now and launch the app. It will ask to update your su binary. Say yes. then the thing will say something about knox then ask you if you want to try to disable knox. Tap yes and knox should be disabled and your su binary should be updated and working.
I'm exactly in the middle of nowhere .. Try to root with CF method. After the first try and reboot. I got the knox alert "unauthorized, bla, bla" the thing is that I can't get the full root or return to stock. Also when I tried to install knox in order to Uninstaller it, I can't. My phone is not allowed to use knox any more... I already tried to download Su and update it in order to disable knox with no success.... Stupid knox and stupid 4.3:crying:

Hi! I just want to root my Note 2 without using Odin. I am having difficulties in connecting my phone to a USB connector, so I don't want to take any chances. All of the instructions in the Internet say that I need to use Odin to either flash CF- Auto Root or flash Philz Recovery first before I use the SuperSU zip file to flash it on my device. If I flash the SuperSU zip file without installing Philz recovery first, would it brick my device?
Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

You cannot flash any zip file via stock recovery, hence you need to flash custom recovery first to be able to flash SuperSU and to flash custom recovery you need to either flash it via odin or terminal emulator. In order to flash via terminal emulator you need to flash cf auto root via odin first. To sum it up you need Odin either ways to root your phone .
If you have correctly installed the Samsung drivers and tried different USB ports and using stock samsung cable Odin should recognize your phone.Uninstall the drivers and re install them from scratch.
Don't root without Odin. Or you will get into problem. Try another computer or another cable. My laptop does not recognise my note 2. I use my friend's. Njoy 4.4.2 till u find above solutions. I have successfully rooted 4.4.2 without any problem.

Hi...
I have GT-N7100 ( Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ) 4.4.2 KitKat ! I recently tried to root my device with Odin odin3 v1.85 ( cwm6-root-note2 ) and got the pass.
I am not able to use SU ( Which was already pre-installed by me before rooting from play store ) Also it give the message "There is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it".
I cannot also go to CWM Recovery mode by Pressing Vol Up + Home Button + Power Button as screen go mad and switch it off, Then I need to start it again to use my phone normally.
I have also installed an app from Play Store named Root Checker which verify if phone is rooted or not and it say "Root Access is not properly configured or was not granted".
Thanks to god my phone is still working but I still wish to Root My phone again with correct process !
Q. Can I still Re-Root My phone ? If Yes, Then please guide me through latest correct process with files.
Q. I wish to root and install CWM Recovery again ( Which I tried before which has not properly configured )
Thanks
