I just bought the phone yesterday from Verizon. It's all stock. I'm running 4.0.2, but I was wondering if 4.0.4 is out for everyone? I haven't received any update about it on the phone. Checking for updates just says I'm up to date. Do I need to manually update it, or just wait for it to hit me? How long should I wait?
If I decide not to wait, I have to unlock and root my phone, correct? And then download and install 4.0.4 (IMM76I) "yakju" from Goggle's Nexus factory images page? or do I need "mysid IMM76K from ICL53F" for toro from the "Official Google OTA Update URLs" thread on these forums?
I'm just concerned because I ran into some battery issues already (phone was completely dead when I woke up this morning. was at 90% when I went to bed. About 7 or 8 hours) and I read 4.0.4 fixes some of the battery issues. I've also changed some settings to limit battery draining. I believe it's working.

4.0.2 its really buggy.. If you are rooted and unlocked try some custom rom?
Stock 4.0.4 has loads of improvement, great battery, great performance, camera quality fix, etc..
If you want stock image, download from Google official site and flash it via fastboot, and then reroot

No, I'm not rooted or anything at all. I planned to root later when I got use the phone. I'm pretty new to this root stuff, but want to explore it. I've already been doing lots of research.
But it seems the vote is to go ahead and unlock, root, get 4.0.4 and get a custom rom/kernel. lol Instead of waiting to get the 4.0.4 through Verizon, I should get it myself manually. I was wondering if I should just wait or not.
Is yakju the version I want or toro?

You want the mysid version for toro (Verizon), yakju is for maguro (GSM)

Thank you! I just have another question before I decide to flash 4.0.4 to my device.
4.0.4 was pulled from google servers, but is available at Random Phantasmagoria. Though, RP says it's not recommended to flash the 4.0.4 IMM76K update. Would you agree? I haven't seen anyone say that version has given problems with all the reading I've done, so I imagine it's fine. Just double checking. I think most people have to be on 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 to get certain kernels and such to work.

Well I was using the IMM76K version til yesterday with CM9 and it was fine, its been upgraded to IMM76I in the latest nightly.
All kernels work with 4.0.3/4.0.4
I don't think you'll have any problems as long as you download the right firmware for your model. Don't flash the GSM firmware on a cdma phone.

been awnsered over and over.... and manual update does not need root.
unlock bootloader, flash official 4.0.4 factory images (the ones found here, apropriate for your device, if you're in europe you probably have maguro/yakju, which is gsm) through fastboot, relock bootloader, done.

Why do you want to "force an OTA" anyway? Just install a custom ROM with 4.0.4, it's probably better than the OTA anyway. You won't damage anything by doing it and you can always go back to a locked bootloader without root.
edit Also, I'm pretty sure you can install stock images with the gnex toolkit available here in the forums. Use that instead of the OTA updates if you necessarily need a stock image.

Updates for people who aren't on Google builds i.e. anything other than yakju, are controlled by Samsung so it's up to them to release them as well as carriers. If you want the latest and greatest swap over to yakju and you'll be getting the latest releases first (and plus we have cookies ).
It all seems to me a waste of resources. Aren't all versions identical in terms of hardware?
When I bought the Galaxy Nexus I did it because I wanted an official stock experience, but you're now saying that my stock ROM isn't really stock? )

You didn't get the V version. That's still a gsm version sent out by Samsung for non yakju builds. Only yakju/takju got IMM76I. I'm thinking due to regionalization Samsung released the K version afterwards as they did some mods like languages.

Unfortunately this is exactly the case. It's still stock, it really depends on how you look at things. I know friends who couldn't care less about which version of Android their Nexus is running and they'll take what comes their way. Then you have people like me who like to experiment and flashing the newest and greatest things
The only thing I hate when I switch ROMs, is losing all my apps and settings. No matter what anyone says, backing them up doesn't always work 100%.

Couldn't agree with you more, that's why I don't bother putting anything on my phone that intends to stay. Or I'll just go back to stock like I am right now if I don't feel like chasing the flashing game. Personally, I don't have much data that I need to persist anyway, it's mainly contacts which is in Google contacts and the rest (apps) I can re-install from the Play Store.

Not sure what problems you guys are having, but I have never had any issues restoring my apps and data.
After flashing a new ROM:
1) I sign into my Google account, and it re-downloads all my apps, Wi-Fi settings, BT settings, email accounts and settings, etc.
2) I use Titanium Backup to restore settings for any of the apps that I want restored.
The only thing I don't restore is data for system apps (like the stock launcher). This you have to redo yourself (which is a little pain in the butt, but it only takes a few minutes). If you use a custom launcher, it's even easier, just restore the settings.
Well, first of all, not all the apps are automatically re-downloaded, depending on the ROM, and second, the launcher settings, the screen/sound/clock/alarms/etc.. (all the other system settings) are just as important.

Really? Strange. I have never had an issue with apps not being re-downloaded when I sign-in to the setup wizard on any stock ROM that I have used.

Yup, as I had mentioned, stock-only launcher needs to be set up. I would assume any alarms would as well only on the stock alarm clock, but I don't use it. Same goes for sound and sound profiles. I use Audio Manager from the market, so the settings are restored using that.
Not sure what settings there for the screen. I thought is was just one brightness control and that's it, no?

The 4.0.4 update for yakjuxw came out today/yesterday if you want to install that. See here.
If you want yakju or takju, look here. First post has instructions on setting up drivers for your PC, unlocking the bootloader, and flashing takju (or yakju) images. Second post has info on how to install the latest stock build (JRN84D).
I would recommend takju (or yakju) over staying on yakjuxw.

If I may add, I would recommend takju if in a g wallet supported country, yakju if anywhere else. I run yakju simply because I don't have any need for Wallet.

i would like to put it on my nexus but am sofar unable to make sense of the development forums pertaining to this so hopefully someone here can help me understand this.

If you're running stock yakju you don't really need to switch to takju. Just install CWM (The Galaxy Nexus Toolkit is an awesome tool to help you do that) and flash this.
You can go from any rom (custom or stock) to jb as far as you have cwm and xxla2 radios..

got some troubleshooting to do... phone wont show up in fastboot... cant use the toolkit until i figure this out.
edit: reinstalled the naked universal driver... shows up in fastboot now.
Does this method wipe everything?

i think it worked, used option 6 for my build of android, then selectedthe option to install cwm touch, followed the instructions in section 3 on:

Hopefully this will fix the issue i was having with my nexus where the radio would lose all connection to the network... usually have to reboot the phone to get it to work again... a minor annoyance for an awesome phone. Atleast it doesn't take 3-5 min to boot up like my blackberry playbook tablet (that's not cool RIM, please fix)...

it didn't on my nexus... though i didn't use the 7th option which does steps 3-6 (unlock bootloader, root phone, flash recovery) which would wipe the phone.
I just hope i can still send messages on it, last time i flashed it i had to get telus to resend the info to the phone.
another question, I don't think I got the full JB os, as my phone is still using the xxla2 radio... if i wanted to go back to yakju for the full stock OTA update, supposedly coming next month sometime, and keep my warranty, I would just reflash everything back to yakju, including recovery (CWM - stock)?
I assume I would have to do this with the fastboot in the DOS window since I don't think that I can revert everything back to 4.0.4 with the toolkit.
also how do I tell if the phone is rooted? I don't think i did this but would like to know anyways.

Yes, for stock, use adb+fastboot and Nexus Factory Images for everything stock 100%. And to check for superuser, just download an app that requires it and see if you get a command prompt. But even easier than that, SuperUser or SuperSU should be in your app drawer if you have it installed, and also in your /system/app

I don't have those apps installed, guess I am not rooted. Good to know.
Also it should be noted that I no longer have any input lag using poweramp, with ICS 4.0.4 there was always a 1 second (seemed like it anyways) delay between the button press and the phone doing what I want. I hope this extends to using my bluetooth headset as well.
hmmm figured i would try downgrading to takju using the toolkit... it did everything which is nice however i noticed that it still uses the radio from yakju...
is there a way to check what it didn't add to the phone when it downgraded?
edit: I should add that it wiped my phone when I loaded takju...
looking forward to getting the official JB update next month...

I already had bootloader unlocked, so I just had to install CWM recovery and flash the jb-takju image mentioned earlier. Once the phone has rebooted the CWM was gone, so had to reflash that. Afterwards I downloaded the XLFF1 radios (you can search for radio-i9250-xxlf1.zip) and flashed them as well. Now my phone shows all the same versions as the takju phones passed out at Google I/O. All my settings, etc. were preserved.

i really would like to remain stock but get JB as well, what would I need besides that radio to make the takju image from the google site to be prompted to dl the OTA JB update if it is still available to download from google...?

The linked one produced the same build number (JRN84D) on my phone as the one on the phone that came from Google I/O, which is the same as the one in efrants' post.

good to know, i compared the url's for both links, the one in efrant's post is missing the ) at the end. I ended up wiping the cache's (except for the one that sounds like some guys name) and flashed the zip from it. working great so far.
at the moment I am reinstalling my apps, and i do not think that all of the apps that were in the google folder last time i reinstalled the os, are there. anyone know what the default apps that are supposed to come with the OS are in that folder? I can only remember Layer which I installed manually...

Sorry, I didn't have to reinstall anything, so the apps in my Google folder are the same as before the update. I do however have Currents in the main app drawer which I don't remember having before.

I could not find an update on google anywhere...
I found reference to my build pertaining to Toro, Magro and Verizon.
I can't see how all of these could be simultaneously true...
I thought '**** it' I ll roll back to a yakju 'official' 4.0.4 IMM76I ROM from here and then flash the Update to 4.1.1 JRO03C

That's because the package you downloaded on Google's Developers website needs to be flashed using fastboot, not CWM. Follow this thread to flash back to yakju, and you should be good to go.

It would definitely work however if you even need to return your phone back to Vodafone, you may or may not run into some issues due to not being on their ROM. It's pretty hard to find random stock ROMs for places other than the main ones these days (or I just might be looking at the wrong places).

I'm sorry, I can't remember what I did, but I fixed it that night, which now feels like months ago.
I installed Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.2, on a pc and I know that that helped me speed up the process.
You can't ruin anything unless you flash a rom not designed for the phone, or format the bios partition and then reboot (with out installing a new bios), but even then I'm sure you can install stuff from a pc over usb using that program.

Thanks New to Android as I have been an avid iOS user and jailbreaker for a few years so just catching up on rooting and flashing ROMs n stuff. But good to know it can be done as i Have the exactly same phone from Vodafone Australia. Better to be safe than sorry and ruining a 2 day old phone.

No worries mate, this is my 2nd android phone (first was a nexus s).
I learned a lot by rooting and playing with custom roms on that ph, but I have been really happy with stock jelly Bean on this (albeit rooted) device. Battery life is great, and it's a snappy phone with great features.
FYI I just read an interesting article Why Apple Won't Divorce Samsung today that explained how Samsung make all the chips for Apple products. You can't go wrong with Samsung mate.
Android users on this forum are generally friendly and Damn knowledgeable too.

OK. The fact is that Vodafone and Telstra get all their updates later. This is because of the better 3g signals they have built in the phone. So due to this their updates come out a little while later. Also it depends where you are in the world (eg. UK, AU, USA) because the UK has already got the update as far as I know. So there is two options here to stay with Vodafone if something does go wrong so you have a backup. And referring to what Unlawful had said he is right you do need a stock Vodafone ROM or features and such can go wrong. BTW I am also with Vodafone but running a custom ROM.

The Gnex is an awesome phone (I upgraded from a NEXUS S), and with stock jelly Bean (rooted) with stock kernel it runs smoothly and is stable.
I miss rge Wolfson audio chip of the nexus s though bc audio recordings are terrible and crackling with the gnex.
Fast charge is something that I now need and otherwise I'm satisfied!

I recently installed JB and rooted my GN using this tutorial (youtube.com/watch?v=1y3Lm6feyGI) and a few other infos picked here and there (including xda). It worked perfectly. BUT here is the thing: I had a GN GSM (I'm in Europe) maguro/yakjuxw running 4.04. My goal was to install JB 4.1.1 JRO03C which I did (and it runs like a charm so far). Now, when checking in Google Maps the version, I find 'takju'.
My question is: is that 'normal'? I mean installing JB had to change the version or is it something wrong I did like picking the wrong file or option in the GN Toolkit? And when I'm at it, is a rooted GN able to use OTA (and should the GN running a specific version for that)?

When you flashed to Jelly Bean, you used the images directly from Google, which made your phone "takju". That just means from this point forward you'll get updates quickly directly from Google.
Root doesn't block your ability to get an OTA. Taking the OTA will make your root go away unless you use an app like "OTA Rootkeeper". Things that will stop you from taking an OTA are a custom recovery, different radios, modified/deleted system files.
If you have custom recovery, you can keep it and flash the OTA manually and keep that custom recovery. You just can't accept and auto-install an OTA.
Changing variant does not effect you in any bad way. It gives you benefit of being ota from Google
So the answer is yes, don't worry about it
