Newbie seeks help for improving Galaxy Nexus signal strength! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just purchased a Sprint Galaxy Nexus 4g Lte from Amazon mobile. In spite of being a newbie I successfully rooted the phone and installed AOSP JB 4.2.1 with the help of video tutorials from Qbking77. (many thanks to him) Since activating the phone I've been shocked at how poor the signal reception is. Side by side, it's 50% worse than my old Evo 4g Wimax. I've been doing some internet research on flashing new radio ROMs to improve signal strength but candidly, the information I've found is over my head. I need a step by step explanation of what to do, (Qbking 77 has a nice video tutorial) , which ROM would work best for JB 4.2.1 on a phone running on Sprint, and finally...would it really help? I even feel like it doesn't receive wireless signals very well either.
Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

I do not have a Sprint model but coming from a Verizon Nexus I know that a lot of it depends on the radio you choose. Now remember that Samsung has reliable radios, they are reliable in that you should be getting better signal then you actually are lolz..
But seriously Samsung Radios suck really badly, and you will never get the same signal you did on your HTC

That is my only gripe with the nexus so far. Poor radio signal. I think my galaxy s2 had better signals.

I would just be happy with improving the signal at this point. Amazing phone...such a disappointment to have a crappy piece of hardware in it.

If you have the latest software, you should already have the latest radio. No matter what radio you have, if Sprint has poor service in your area, you will also have poor service. Check with Sprint on any LTE or Network Vision updates in your area.

Sometimes though the latest radio doesn't work best for anyone. I know that's what was the case for my CDMA Nexus, I was using a ICS CDMA radio w/JB LTE radio for the best results in my area.

[Verizon] How is the reception?

hello,
How is the reception on the Verizon Nexus? I heard there was a radio issue but not sure if it was true or if it got fixed. Anyway... any feed back will be appreciated.
Better.. was like utter crap before the last release.. battery was doing well and 4g signal worked as well as can be expected..
it's been great in Phoenix
It depends on your location. Some areas have great VZW coverage, others not so much. You should ask your local friends if they like their coverage.
However, I have found VZW has better penetration into large buildings. When I had AT&T + iPhone, I always lost signal at work unless I stood by a window. With VZW, my GNex rarely drops calls no matter where I am (of course, the two different phones may have been a factor).
You hear complains about the GNex radio and dropped calls/data, but you shouldn't let that sway your decision. Every model that comes out will have its share of units with constant signal problems, and the GNex is no different. Owners of such phones fill the forums with complaints & requests for help (legitimately so), which tends to give the phone a bad reputation. But the vast majority of GNex owners never have major signal problems. And those that were having signal loss with the original radios will most likely agree that signal quality has improved significantly with the latest firmware.
Thank you for those quick replies... I was asking because in some places I read is a bug with ICS and others that is the radio. I got a GS3 but i'm going to return it and get a Nexus till the new Nexus comes out.
I have good signal just about everywhere.

1 more thing, is it a good price a galaxy nexus 32 gigabytes for $250 ?

I just went to my local Verizon store and they phone they have have 0 bars... =/ that sucks.
I've only had mine for a week and Verizon signal is great. 4g is great too. Only thing that's weak is Wi-Fi for some odd reason. Honestly... the Galaxy S3 is a sweet phone , played with one yesterday. But for some reason I like my Nexus better. The screen on the GS3 is better but that's about it. And not worth it yet cause of its locked bootloader. You will be happy with a Nexus.

yes, sorry, I forgot to mention...without contract.
I've had great signal with mine. The only other carrier that compares in the area is T-Mobile.

The signal is spotty. It was like that with my coworker's Fascinate. I foolishly thought they'd get it together a year later when our nexus launched. Nope, it still sucks in the DC area. My other coworker picked up the SIII it *still* sucks! I don't know or care if it is Samsung or Verizon that sucks when it comes to data on VZW's LTE but it's pathetic.

There are definitely areas where Verizon is not king. I spend a week or so in Torrance every year, and Verizon sucks there bigtime. In fact, I think ATT had LTE right on Redondo Beach. Or so I was told. I barely had 3G, although to my defense I was on JB at the time.
My experience has always been very good with this phone. This link says it all!
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25921-this-is-why-your-verizon-nexus-signal-sucks/
I've learned to ignore the signal bars all together, as long as my texts and calls go through; which they do even when there's no bars showing.
4G is spotty on here, but I'm on wifi 95% of the time anyway, and on 3G the remainder...4G isn't worth anything to me really.
Cheers
I have no problems in Pittsburgh

Rogers: LTE network reception

Coming from the Galaxy s II LTE, I noticed that the LTE connection is not as great as it used to be from GSII to GSIII. At the same location (my desk at work) I used to consistently have LTE, not I get 4G and if I'm lucky, 3 bars.
Question(s): instead of waiting for the updated modem from Rogers,
1)Anyone flash UCAL based ROMS experience better LTE connection with Rogers?
2)Anyone flash ANY ROM and notice improvements?
3)Anyone try any tweaks that they wouldn't mind sharing that improves this?
I'm thinking of flashing Tuchmi but I'm really considering other ROMs based on UCAL just to see if it improves LTE. Anyone experience anything as mentioned above?

My office downtown at front and bay gets terrible reception.
Yesterday I had my phone running cm10 next to a buddy on stock and we were both only getting 3-5 down and less than 1 up!
Before the s3 I had a blackberry and it had **** reception in my office equipment too.
I am also running cm10 latest version august 17th. Does anyone know what the lte symbol is? I only connect to 4g and H+. Before I installed the ROM I never had access to the network, but I do now after speaking to my provider.

4G is the LTE in CM10
I really think the antenna on the sgs3 is weaker for both cellular and wifi reception. Once it picks up a signal when you're close enough its alright but compared to other devices I've used such as sgs2 it does seem weaker. And sgs2 was fairly weak as it was IMO.

Coming from iPhone 4, I would say SGSIII's reception is pretty good to me. Never used SGSII before, I cannot provide the comparison.
I am using the AT&T UCAL based rom on Rogers, got 4 bars consistently. I guess the performance is pretty much the same, the battery seems getting better.
I've heard of people having the same issue coming from an S2 to S3 as well

He should root and test different radios. Is his provider tmobile and do your folks live in the sticks? If so that is your problem. Think of att and tmobile as am and FM radio. AM is generally poor quality with a large area of coverage vs. FM with a short radius but excellent quality.

No they are on Sprint, but my buddy thats a tech is just gonna switch it out for a ltevo, which I had and got perfect coverage

Using my T989 on AT&T

I am going to be passing down my unlocked S2 to my girlfriend that is currently(for now) on ATT. I am running "Jedi Bean" now and just like everyone else on a 4.1 ROM, I dont have signal strength bars.
My question are:
*Is there anyway for me to get Signal strength bars with a T989 on ATT?
*Should, or could I even, flash an ATT radio? Would it help reception on ATT?
Please give me some ideas as to what I can do to make my T989 run as flawless, and as "normal", as possible on ATT's network.
U will only get 2g speed I would recommend selling or trading for a skyrocket

I know it cant get 4G, but I thought the T989 is capable of 3G on AT&T, it has the band for it...The main reason I am giving my girlfriend the S2 is so she can have all the Samsung apps and enjoy a better phone than she has; currently an HTC Inspire. I dont want to sell/trade it is because its my spare phone now that I sold my Galaxy S.
Side note: My girlfriend barely uses data, so the reduced speed is not a big deal.
It gets 3g on at&t because occasionally when I go out of my hspa 4g range like in middle of nowhere my phone will link up to an at&t tower on the edge network which is technically 3g. Sometimes its gprs 2g but it does get 3g on at&t signal.

I also have a t989 on at&t and don't use data so is it possible to flash a different radio for better clarity?
My default radio is UVLC8

Verizon galaxy nexus antenna

My Verizon upgrade is due in February and though I love my galaxy nexus the reception is terrible constantly in 3g. I had an s3 for about 6 months always had 4g but just missed my nexus to much and switched back despite the constant data drops..
Which phones on Verizon have the best/descent/worst antenna?

go to settings>about phone>baseband version= it should say for the vzw variant "I515.10 V.FK01 / I515.FK02" <-if you dont have that version,go to this ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890585 ) and get the latest radios, since your still getting drops and bad speeds you might need to upgrade your radios.
i have the latest radios, though my question is redundant... i have had a nexus for 2 years always keeping up with the latest radios.
Same problem here. It's bad enough that in switching to T-Mobile as son as I can. I'm done with Verizon's sub par network and crap phone selection. I love my gnex but paying for 4g and rarely getting 4g to work is just not worth staying with them. I had the same problem on my Moto Bionic. I think their network is just receiving way to much traffic for it to handle and they don't have enough towers or networking to deal with it. Sorry, just my rant I had to get out.
