Sudden battery drain - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. Been really enjoying the note 2. However in the past day or two I've noticed a sudden drop in battery life. Like a bit more than usual day to day. The only thing I can put it down to at the minute could be I installed the noozoxiode dsp manager. Apart from that I have installed senti wayk alarm clock and an icon pack for nova launcher.
Ive also installed a battery monitor and its not really telling me anything!
Ive a feeling it's the noozoxiode dsp. As you do have to set it as a music effect in the system settings and it kinda takes over or sits on top of anything musical. So it must be running all the time, but it doesn't seem to take up much ram.
Ive checked in the applications manager and theres nothing weird in there. Also task manager seems fine and im an almost constant half and half overall ram use.
Im not rooted and running the stock rom 4.1.1 that came with the phone.
Hope this is all the info. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the tips. Had all those set anyway and ive heard of smart stay but not sure what it is?
I have brightness set to auto but if I remember right I may have knocked the slider in the notification bar and its been on half since. Like all the time, And it doesn't move when I toggle auto brightness! Ive now had the slider down to the absolute minimum and still have auto brightness checked for the past 40 mins or so.
Screen display had been showing a pretty constant 35% in battery settings.
So leave it for now on thw minimum brightness slider or is there a way to "reset" the slider?

Still amoled, still no batery usage on black screen so yes it should still work without to much battery drain
Just tried it and works fine.

I thought I had read somewhere that the Galaxy S II had custom controls over the lights under the capacitive buttons. I take it that can't be used to show notifications without a custom kernel though?
It works.. BUT. When noled is on and displaying, it keeps the phone awake which rubbed out 70% of my battery in 6 hours..
It was the first app i installed, have this on my Galaxy s also. I have always had noled set to turn off after 30 minutes if the phone is not used. I figure if you have not looked at your display for 30 minutes, then there is no point in having it continuing on, also, you can have it set the phone to minimum brightness when it is on, so battery consumption is not that bad. Works great though, best app developed for these Samsungs.
Hi there,
Has anyone got this to work for emails? I have several Email accounts set up, but the only one that shows in the email list is the Google one. I have tried putting watches on the Email app(s). With no joy.
Any tips?
Thanks

For any email accounts other than gmail you have to open up 'Toggle notifications' which then should pop up asking you to enable noled in the accessibility settings. After that, just scroll down the list and enable 'Email'. If, like me, you have 2 email check boxes, just enable them both. Works great, with no problems

I read this as well...
The only controls you have for the capacitive lights is how long they stay on for when you are using the device.

Which means that the software can somehow control the lights (telling them how long they should stay on), so with a custom kernel/ROM it should be possible to use them as notification lights.
On the SGS though, there was a mod which used the bottom lights of the device... So maybe somebody can port that mod to the SGS2???

Yes, Neldar's BLN. The downside of that solution is the requirement of kernel support, whilst NoLED works right away on stock. Some users report heavy battery drain on NoLED, something that I personally never've experienced, though.
Yeah, and we are not that far yet with the SGS2 that we have the kernel support I assume.
Just checked this out, think I may have to download it. Thanks guys
Im waitin eagerly for one of the devs to provide support for bln, keep checking my phone every 5 mins for notifications! Killing my productivity

I've been using NoLED on my GSII for about a day now. Doesn't affect battery life that much. However I do check the notifications within 5-10 mins so it doesnt stay lit for long.
One issue I observed is when I receive a text and I swipe the message icon in the lock screen, it takes 3-5 seconds to open the messaging application. With NoLED disabled it is pretty much instantaneous.
noled and missed calls
I am having trouble getting NOLED to notify me for missed calls. The app works flawlessly for texts and emails. I have spent a week studying all my "setting's" in both the apps and phones menues. I is a Galaxy s ll. Thank you

Do you feel it really increases battery time?
I am currently trying out Juice Defender free on the standard preset for my unmodded Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately I am not thinking that I am going to continue with it.
So far it has crashed my phone to reboot (first time that has happened) and when not using my 4g it turns it off but it takes forever for it to come back on once I want to use the phone and it gets pretty frustrating having a useless phone for about 5-8 minutes everytime I pick it up.
I hope you have better luck than I am having.

Strange. It's never done any of that on mine. I'm on HSPDA+ though.
As for whether if makes a difference I'd definitely have to say a big yes. But it all depends on how you use your phone.
Ultimate working nicely here. Syncs every 15 min like it should. Screen is eating 60-70% so it makes only a small difference.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I bought ultimate, and found it to be a bit of a hog. I then turned off all the extra stuff and went back to the basic setting - the same as the free version, and noticed very little difference.
I think it might help you if you're one of those people who accidentally leaves radios on, or don't have high signal most places you go. For me a UV kernel made the only real difference.
It works well but not saving as much battery as it did on Gingerbread. Default Android idle-time battery management seems to have got much better.

This. I see a nice increase in battery life while I'm not using it, but if I have it on a lot (which I usually do) the battery gets drained pretty quickly.
I keep my phone on CDMA mode most of the time, unless I need to download something or want to watch a movie, then I switch to CDMA/LTE. I'm still not sure how much it helps though, as I've only had the phone for a little over a week.
For me, JD Ultimate works wonders. Especially when I'm at work and not playing with the phone too often and having only 2 signal bars, JD enables radio every 30 mins to allow apps to sync. It also manages my brightness automatically, which results in screen usually taking less than 50% of battery.
In general it helps me a lot, like it did on SGS2. My night schedule uses airplane mode and I only loose 2-3% over night.
I would have to remember about too many things if not using JD, so for me well worth it.

It does, i never used beta and JD controls my brightness. Remember there is a bug related to manual apk install where you cant tap install. I still use JD for brightness, just disable it in quick menu when manually installing apps then reenabling right away.

When JD is managining brightness, if the phone is asleep, when waking it up with the power button the screen comes full brightness and then settles to a lower level, which is quite annoying. Do you see this happening too?

That is totally weird, cause mine seems to wake up high and only then lower the brightness. I wonder if it's ROM related, although I'm on stock kernel 4.0.3.

Beacuse, believe it or not, it provides functions that some people find useful. Same goes for LightFlow, if you like the white-only color led notification of pure android, then you don't need this app either. If you prefer more colors/choices, then you do.

I have no flicker. Filter Mode is unusually placed in Help section I have it enabled.
I purchased JD Ultimate yesterday so I can't really comment on how well it is improving my battery life. I will say that I am having issues going back to LTE when the screen is unlocked (Using the network mode setting). The phone keeps going to WCDMA instead of LTE. However, I noticed that since I have been using JD Beta 3.8.8, version 3.8.9 has come out and has addressed a few of my issues. The configure apps now works without crashing JD. I still don't know if the LTE is functioning incorrectly as I haven't had time away from my computer (I have no Wi-Fi at my hotel and must tether).
Is anyone else experiencing issues with the phone going to WCDMA mode after the phone wakes up? Also, what version of JD are you using?

[Q] brightnes with notification bar doesn't work anymore

Hi
Finding, that the battery from the SGW drops to fast, I installed an so called battery saver app. Firstly I tried juice defender, finding out that I need Pro version to really save energy the way I want to -> deinstalled. Next I tried GreenPower free battery saver. Didn't notice, that switching off WLAN and G3/4 is also only available in pro version. Nevertheless I configured everything in order to give it a try.
Today I noticed, that GreenPower... switched on WLAN and GPS and Blutooth and every other power consuming device. Despite disply brightnes. For what?? So I uninstalled the app.
The problem now is, that GreenPower... switched the display brightness to automatic! Even at the widget "Energiesparmodus" ("powersavings"?) the sign for brightness shows an "A" for automatic. I can adjust the brightness at settings (1000 subfolders) BUT the quick cool sliding at the notification bar is not working any more.
Is there a possibility to switch it on again?
I'm rooted and have Titanium Backup installed with an full backup from last week.
Trying to recover notification bar did not work (screen notification "backup failed" and notification bar was gone; after reboot bar back again, with no brightness regulation).
Anybody with glue for this?
holydiver
Personally recommend to not use a battery saver apps or some sort eg. when the screen is off data connection will be off.
And when you wake the SGW it will again struggle to look for the data connection signal ...that will take energy away from the battery.

What about installing a custom rom like Bionic cow? Had the same problem with the energy on this device with the stock rom and i tried different "saver"-apps.
At least i gave this rom a try et voilĂ  even with intensive use the accu lasts much longer than before. I can't say why this rom reduces the energy consumption, maybe because of the lightweight launcer and some other modifications...
solved
Thanks guys!
It stopped working for 3 days. On the 4th suddenly it worked again. Without doing NOTHING. I even didn't do another reset. curios

Autobrightness bug

Hello little birdies.
I am having an issue with my auto-brightness and I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.
Whenever my auto-brightness shines through the power of the sun (goes to 100%) it seems to get stuck at full brightness and my already not so good screen-on time takes a dip and I always notice this too late . I use the quick settings widget which is preinstalled and the A for auto-brightness is set but when I click it the screen immediately lowers the brightness, while the A for auto-brightness remains, and a vain in my forehead pops.
Furthermore after checking badass battery monitor it shows that my screen is often at 100% sun shadowing brightness. Today it was at full mutated power the whole time. Anyone got an idea as to what could cause this? Anyone?
PS. You might have noticed in the text above that I think the screen is really bright when at full power and that I can see the screen perfectly during a warm ball-soothing sunny day.
Yes, I have a bug with auto brightness too. It seems to deactivate itself. I have activated it a couple of times and everytime it deactivate itself at 100 % after some use.
I have an international HTC One X with the latest 1.29.401.11 update.
Glad to know I'm not the only one. I will soon factory reset my phone to check if it magically gets better.
I noticed this last night. My phone was blindingly bright and I didn't understand why it was set to 100%. I set it back to Auto and so far its still on Auto. i will have to keep an eye on this.
HTC really need to fire the monkeys they have working as coders. I guess if their software is not fixed up in next couple of weeks there might be a whole lot of people, me included, who will migrate to the SIII (given of course that it doesn't have a gazillion bugs as well).
I've been trying all day to recreate the problem but ist not doing it. I put my phone in the sun, I tried using the camera app, I used the video app with its 100% brightness setting, but the phone is still showing Auto brightness.
Any ideas on what triggers 100% brightness?
I have the same problem with mine. It's just randomly turns off auto brightness
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I don't know either what triggers it. It seems to deactivate at either 0 % or 100 %.
I don't have many apps installed, if I just do some web surfing and put it to sleep, when I wake it up the auto brightness is deactivated, in maybe 1 of 4 times. Irritating.
For whatever reason i haven't been getting the auto brightness bug for the past three days. Not sure how it resolved itself since I didn't get any software updates.
If you watch a video you can change the brightness and will stick and not go back to your original settings.

No, that's not the trigger. I investigated that on my phone and found no link.
I take that back. You are right! It seems the brightness setting in the movie play is the culprit. Although it doesn't always do it. One more thing for the chimps at HTC to fix.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Yesterday the auto brightness bug kicked in right before my eyes. I was browsing the web in total darkness in bed, when suddenly I was blinded by 100% brightness. So it's not just the movie player brightness that causes this issue.

Yeah. That's because the camera jacks up brightness for outdoor visibility. They need to have an option to disable that.

I realize that, however it doesn't always do it. Also sometimes it will kick into 100% brightness without using the camera or movie player. It seems completely random to me.
mine is stuck at zero. started this morning and I did record a video actually.
auto just takes it.to zero.
but also, if i change it directly from the srttings menu, its not.effecting at all, just staying at the same previous custom level.
whrn using widget, just turns it to zero.
opened the video player, changed brightness level and its normal now. it was in the middle, the video brightness level
ok just edited this post and its malfunctioning again.. arrrgh!
Try an application that controls autobrightness, it should fix the problem. I would recommend Lux Dash.
So it is the widget, powertoggle.
Once I fix the issue by changing video brightness, it works fone, till I toggle the widget to use auto-brightness.
Several comments on PlayStore also confirms this with several phones.
Just don't use auto brightness from powertoggle. It is actually doffetent.from what OP describes, but.people may come up to this thread while searching, so I think it willbe useful to post here.

Wifi drain or just normal?

Hi,
New to the note 2, not new to being a flashaholic. Being very tame atm and only using stock rom (rooted) with no Cwm.
Strangely I get about 10% drain overnight. Got better batt app but doesn't really show much except wifi is/was on.. And this audio_out_2.
Is that normal on stock rom? On the dhd it was more like 1-2% on experimental roms

Disable stuff manually or use Juice Defender Ultimate (3.9.6). I use JD and never turn anything of manually.
I do have sync on. I guess what people are trying to say it's pretty standard on stock rom and I'm in need of an awesome custom rom to flash?
I used jd ages ago but configuring is a bit of a pain.. I may try it again till awesome roms comes out.

Check you applications, I have 90 apps installed and only have 0.5-0.6% per hour while sleeping with sync on.
Tonight, for example, I left wild blood downloading the last 200 mb it needed.
It took like 5 minutes, then I woke up and I noticed that it kept the device awake for 6 hours even after finishing the download, Battery went for 50 to 43% in 6 hours..
Custom roms won't make a great difference.. Maybe removing some bloatware will do, but you can stay on stock imho.

Just a question, do you, by any chance, have SIM plugged in? I observed quite higher power drain (overnight) when I did not have SIM inside.
Yeah, I have sim in at all times.. Erm apps wise, I've not added any new ones before my upgrade so I guess if there is an issue it would be some bloat apps? I tried to freeze as many as I dare using tb. (well, I followed the script of apps to delete on the other thread).
What app did you used to find what apps drained x amount per hr? That seems like a clever one
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, I have similar experiences. My phone drains around 10% overnight with no apps in the background and wifi off.
So what I'm doing and it seems that it has marginally helped is:
1. Turn off Sync
2. Turn off Notifications from Email accounts as these come in all the time even overnight and the notification process and the Blue LED will drain the battery
3. Decrease screen brightness to around 40%
4. Turn on wifi only when needed
5. Disable some of the apps I don't use (Chaton, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo news, S Suggest and Samsung Store, etc)
Now I get about of 1 1/2 day of regular use.
Think I found the culprit..
Has anyone got motion feature turned on? There's that sneak wake function ticked on mine as default, I switched that off and I only got 4% drain overnight.
Perhaps others may want to give this a go and see if it helps?

4-5% per night is what I see on my GT-N7100 (intl), with Wifi on, BT off, GPS off, NFC off, Sync on.
I got Motion on though, with following features: "Tilt to zoom", "Palm swipe to capture", "Palm touch to mute/pause". I am not sure which one is supposed to be "sneak wake" one .
But now, when thinking about it, I realize I do not need any of those, so I am going to turn Motion off completely to see if it has any impact.
