I just got a SGH-I747M, which is supposed to be unlocked. Two questions, please.
a) What's the difference between SGH-I747 and I747M?
b) How can I check if it's actually factory unlocked?

i747M is the Canadian version.
1747 is AT&T's version

Thank you so much for replying. So my phone is unlocked, and on Rogers Canada. Can I flash the Bell Canada OTA Leak from SamFirmware onto this phone? Does carrier matter in that?
you can flash whatever you want from within this forum since its the same phone. Yes you can flash the Bell OTA leak (needs to be LH1) just follow the steps in the thread and then flash the Rogers Modem afterwards if it flashes the Bell Modem.

Ok, one more question, please (I don't want to end up with an expensive brick). I am in Pakistan, and the phone is factory unlocked with Rogers Canada branding. If I grab the Bell Canada OTA update from Sammobile, will it lock my phone? and, is it safe to flash the OTA through Odin? It is currently working with a local carrier, so I assume that it's actually unlocked, but any way to verify that?
Also, you mentioned "follow the steps in thread"... what thread are you referring to?
I'm currently on Rogers LH1... do I need to flash Bell LH1 first before applying the OTA?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Once it is unlocked flashing other roms won't relock it.
If you are flashing the firmware via Odin, it will usually include the modem with it. So flash the Rogers one after if you want. It really won't matter which modem you use because you're not even in Canada to begin with.

There is a flashing guide sticky in the forums. Please read it to understand how flashing works.
OTA via Odin is fine, but getting CWM on your phone and flashing roms through it is a simpler and safer way in my opinion.
Anyways, please read the sticky for more information. Everything you need is in there, so search please.

a big question, I have a 747m from a friend (Telcel Mexico), and wants to mount the same ROM and settings that I have on my i747 AT & T (ROM use Hyperdrive).
I can work with identically 747m with my i747? or talk about that do not support any ROM, Kernel Root, Modems etc. between one and another device?
Thanks, sorry for the English, use translator

i have the Telus Model - SGH-i317M. is that the same model for At&T ... all At&T flashing/rooting guides would work for me?
can I flash the international firmware? by doing so, will that mean I get official samsung updates faster?

I would also backup your modem with twrp recovery, so if you run into problems, you can just restore. Also some roms are based on the Canadian note 2 as well.

Does the Canadian version work fine regardless if the Canadian carrier is Telus or Rogers?
Is cf-auto root a recovery tool? If so, only 1 of those 3 would be needed right.... Because no sense in 3 recovery tools? Any recommendations please which would be the best one for me?

Cf-auto root roots your phone, it doesn't install any recoveries. Here's the thread, just download the Canadian version and flash with Odin (yes it works with telus/bell/rogers) . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33854391
Then, if you want to flash custom roms then you need to install either Cwm or twrp recovery. Recommend twrp.
You can install twrp by installing goo manager via play store or download the file to flash with Odin.

After you're rooted, if you install goo manager, it can install twrp automatically. I'm guessing there must be some variance to have a Canadian version.
Just search for nandroid backup for twrp recovery which is a complete backup. Lots of guides and YouTube videos if you search for it or someone can point you to one.

No problem. Well first I would only install firmwares that are in the i317 Devs section.
To answer your question, root > install recovery >do a nandroid backup!>install custom roms

Custom roms are firmwares. There are some roms that are ported from international firmwares and made to work for our version of note 2. All the compatible roms/firmwares are in the AT&T dev's section here, just make sure you read all the instructions and you can always ask them the question in they're thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1874
In any case, I would do a lot more research and reading. There are bunch of guides and tutorials.

I just started playing with the Galaxy Note 2's as well this weekend (all Rogers i317m). Rooted 5 of them, and installed custom roms on 3 of them. All in all much easier than jailbreaking iphones. That said, this forum has been a wealth of information. I've tried a few roms and really like the International Stock Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575. I will try Clean Rom next.
This is what I've done, and it's been a snap :
1. Put your phone into Odin Download mode, and root the phone using ODIN and the cwm6-root-note2.tar file (clockworkmod-there's some youtube videos on how to do this)
2. Download the custom rom you wish to flash to your phone (eg download directory)
3. Boot your phone into CWM recovery mode
4. Make a BACKUP rom of your existing phone (good for recovery, if you didn't back up all your contacts, sms, apps, etc....this is like TIMEMACHINE and saves to your phone's CWM directory).
5. Erase / Wipe Data (this does not erase your photos/videos, just basically the OS).
6. Flash ROM from ZIP (from your download directory)
7. Erase cache
8. Reboot to your new Custom Rom!
9. If you don't like the new Custom Rom, you can always boot back into CWM and restore from the BACKUP rom.
10. I highly recommend looking into Titanium Backup and SMS Backup, as well as syncing your contacts to GMAIL.
Good luck

I'm new to this, but my question is how to I return my phone to stock, I had someone root and add a rom to it and now I have lost my lte radio..but this person tells me all is fine and that I'm completely stock and just rooted, this may be true but the phone hardly works now..

but when I check my phone know it says its a samsung sgh-i317 now instead of sgh-i317m, this have made me believe that the phone maybe was rooted with n7100 firmware.
all I want is the phone to be completely stock as if I have just pulled it out of the box
I dont want it rooted or any sort of rom, I need all stock files because I have no backup of any sort also from what I can tell I may need samsung drivers and Odin I have no idea which I need or where to acquire the correct files...
please help

I would flash the Telus stock which is root injected from this thread. You may need to set the csc to Telus. Flash with odin. You can easily remove the root if everything works.

well go to the development section, visit the stickies there are some Odin stock ROM's. I would wipe, I know it sucks but it's the only way to avoid problems. Once rooted buy titanium backup. I can set my phone back up in about 30 min. Or if you have a custom recovery you can restore just data from a nandroid, I know TWRP will do it. But if you're interested in flashing might as well go all out put a custom recovery on and try out the custom ROM's like mine. Debloated, extra features and good battery life. Just sayin

To be safe don't flash the Odin version of the Rogers ROM on you I747, The ROM itself is definitely compatible though.

This is BS!
When roaming in the US, Bell customers fallback on the AT&T network natively.
Not sure for Telus and Rogers customers though...
And even if, for some reason, our modems don't work in the US, it doesn't mean you can't flash an AT&T modem from the DEV section using Odin (.tar modem file) or a custom recovery (.zip modem file).

Rogers roams on AT&T in the US. I have flashed AT&T based Roms with no issues on my Canadian Rogers SGH-I747M, other than getting some AT&T stuff (like their hotspot manager).
Can the reverse be done without any issues? I'm afraid of bricking the device. I'd want to do the flash via ODIN as it would be easier for me.

Bell i747m with Telus ROM --> OK
Bell i747m with AT&T ROM --> OK

If you have the T999/T999L/T999N, you should stick with what was made for that device. Metro was recently bought by tmobile. Previously, the S3 for that network was SPH-R530 or something like that.
most likely the cwm and cm for metro were made for that older model device. When T-Mobile took over, the Metro S3's are now T999N which for our purposes is identical to the T999L. (Read my thread linked in my sig). If you have the older model metro s3, use cm built for it. If yours is T999 variant, use that version instead.

Bootloaders are not locked. O think you're good to go.

There is CyanogenMod made specifically for your device. Always make a backup before you do anything crazy.
Yep, Odin will put the stock rom back on for you. You will lose all your data though, so make a backup.
Also, I think it's rude to hijack someone's thread. Make you own with your own question.

That CM was likely for the old ?Sprint? variant for metro. I wouldn't use it on the new one. d2tmo should work.
And odin won't wipe your data, but you will have to factory reset, which will.

+1 for d2tmo on T999L. That is what I'm running.

Okay so I want to flash back to stock but I realized that my bootloader is not the stock one. I flashed the modem to the newest one before. My bootloader is I747MVLUEMK5. I've heard people sat that i cannot go back to stock just straight flashing with Odin now that I have a different modem. What procedures do I need to take to flash back to stock?

I apologize. MK5 is a problematic bootloader. Do not try to Odin flash an older firmware over this. Again I apologize. What carrier are you with? If it is a Canadian carrier you can just flash the appropriate firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558311. These have the bootloader removed.

If you want absolute stock including the bootloader, modem, kernel, you can get an odin flashable firmware from here (This is the 4.3 version you are currently on, MK5) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2543854. One of the members has started a seedbox to host the images because the download options in the OP are painfully slow. Post # 208 shows this link to the seedbox http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2543854. You can pick the Telus ROM from here and use this for complete stock. Again I apologize for the bad advice. I've been stressing all day hoping you hadn't flashed 4.1.x yet.

Alright. I already have a stock ROM before and the name of it includes MK5 for TLS. I'm thinking that would work? The exact name is "I747MVLUEMK5_I747MOYBEMK5_I747MVLUEMK5_HOME.tar.md5". No problem, good thing I didn't flash it LOL. Thanks for your help.

That is the correct one, Backup everything you need off your phone as Odin will wipe everything. nLeaving an external SD in is OK, but the internal memory will get wiped.

Alright. I was on Quantum but I find that the newest version is far too glitchy and incomplete for me. Any other ones you recommend? How about LiquidSmooth?

I've only used stock and CM11 so far since 4.3. The I've not tried Liquid Smooth but Grievous ROM is pretty good. It's the ROM currently on my wife's phone. It is white themed Touchwiz which was my biggest selling point.

I don't think that is compatible with the i747m no?
Oh and also, let's say I want to get Liquid Smooth onto my phone but I currently have Quantum. Do I have to flash back to stock with Odin and then install the Liquid Smooth ROM? Or can I just go and wipe the system now in recovery without going to stock and then install Liquid Smooth in recovery?
Grievous is compatible with the 747m. Im on 747m Bell. You just need to flash a modem and kernel to get data and wifi to work. As far as liquid smooth, you do not need to go back to stock. Installing the ROM and then wiping should work. If you do find that you ever flash a ROM and have WiFi issues, kernel is likely culprit. No data is usually due to a modem. These seem to be more often with new ROMs and most development based off AT&T phones.
