This is a non visual tutorial at the moment. I will add them later as I have no time to do this at the moment.
Always backup your boot animation in case the new one does not work.
Requirements:
1: Some type of root file manager. (Solid explorer recommended)
2: Root access
Step 1: go to system>media>bootanimation.zip>desc.txt
Step 2: you are going to need to go to the second line and change the letter "p" to the letter "c".
Step 3 change the video and or audio to whatever length.
Step 4 reboot and see if it worked.
Note: this may not work on all ics roms (4.0.X) or 4.1.X. It absolutely does not work on liquid smooth Rom. There is a certain time limit as it is not forever and it is impossible to make it last "forever" because this is hardware and unless you know how to change hardware it is impossible.

This might be irrelevant, but you should create a boot animation of "yourself" (Ariana Grande) ahahaha. That would be pretty awesome!

Doesn't work on liquid smooth rom . No Audio files are in the rom for boot sounds...i.e. poweron.ogg etc. And even if you add your own it still doesn't work.

The method that was mentioned in the OP is wrong... the 'p' in the desc.txt file basically defines the animation part. Now, if you really want to decrease the boot time of your animation you have two methods:
- remove images from the animation folders making sure you keep the numbered naming convention in order
- increase the value for the FPS number in the desc.txt, the number should be next to the image resolution (preferred method)
If anyone would like me to create a tutorial on how to properly set up a flashable boot animation I will gladly do so.

Few things.
1. The easiest root method, will trip your flash counter and void your warranty. The other method of remaining stock, rooted will not trip your counter, but you CANNOT flash custom binaries or it will trip. So it depends on which method you prefer to take.
2. Development on this device is great. Just got a new radio from Samsung today and everyone's reception increased. We have AOKP, CM, port from other ROMs, debloated stock ROMs, tons of themes, a mess of kernels to choose from. We have a TON of RD in this section. Not to mention, everyone in the forum is VERY helpful, and there isn't as much flaming going on as there was on t989 forums. (Which you and I are both from).
3. As with always, stating the best ROM is pointless for two reasons. Everyone has different usage. Kernels and ROMs work differently together for everyone's phones, so you'd need to try them all. But not only that, all dev's work should be appreciated because to be quite honest, the work they are putting out there is high-quality, it's just a matter of preference.
You have PLENTY of good ROMs, and to name a few (not saying others aren't just as good!) but these are the ones I have tested in no particular order..
1. DarthStalker v9 is great, a bit bulky but it's heavily featured, and still fast on it's feet, with good battery.
2. RLS by PureMotive is a nice aroma installer ROM. You can cherry pick what you want to add, or go with his recommended settings. Fast, beautiful, great battery.
3. WICKED v6 is SUPER smooth, with excellent battery life, lightly themed while not straying too far from the stock feel.
Like I said, there are others but as far as TouchWiz goes these are the ones I have used so far.
I DO NOT recommend AOKP 4.2.1 or CM10.1 for the moment, it's quite buggy but it is fairly new.
There are 2 development sections. Browse and read.
And contrary to what guy above me said... 4.2.1 works nearly bug free (I've yet to notice a bug). Rootbox and illusion are very stable and customizable.
Before this thread gets locked and shut down, my $.02 is flash wicked v6 for a touchwiz ROM or Rootbox 3.6 official release for an aosp ROM.

Most roms are pretty much similar after a while but what you expect? For the phone to bake you food with a certain rom lol. Seriously though just try them out. I would stick with base 4.1.1.
Please don't say CM10 is not buggy because it is, it has that home button glitch where it brings up the task manager instead of actually going back requiring reboot. It might not happen to you but other users are reporting. For your first few rom go base sir.

It's not necessarily good advice to tell someone to use stock for a while before using AOSP. I dove in head first. No problems. It depends on the person. Lots of variables. Like their experience with Android. Or if they know someone who knows a bit about it. Also depends on how the person learns and how tech savvy they are. But mostly what their device is to them, and what they want to make it do.
I have a tar of TWRP, will upload to Dropbox and edit this post with a link.
Edit: http://db.tt/JlnorIEn
And no to your apps2zip question.

I'm not sure how in the world a stock Samsung/AT&T 4.2.2 Rom is going to outperform CarbonRom or Beanstalk.
And no I'm not looking for a debate about AOSP and TW Roms. Just an opinion.
The release date of 4.2.2 is still unknown for Note 2.

Samsung Galaxy S3 & Note 2 Android 4.2.2 Update Wait Over Shortly
That sure nails it down.
They point out :
The update will bring with it some new features along with fixing bugs. Owners will be able to resize apps, change their colour and their layout.
Welp, I can do that already with Roms that are built they way they should be out of the box.
CarbonRom with Crossbreeder and Xposed installed is insane.
I may flash back to be able to receive the update.
But it'll probably make me want to kick my own ass, and I'll restore back to heaven.
EDIT: Then again, I wasn't thinking. Once Team Zodiac and our other quality devs get their hands on the 4.2.2 source, the heavens will open up more.

And after all that all I have to say is one simple thing Spen.
I am running AOSP right now the alternatives for the Spen are still nowhere near the seamless integration on a TW Rom, no discussion there.
If you dont care aobut the Spen then sure, who cares about TW Roms.
I get improves fps on games and benchmarks with the current ROM at the cost of some spen functionality...I wish i didnt have to choose.
Err..... did you even read what I wrote?
I got a note because of it size and spen. I still can use it just not everything is as seamless as with tw ROMs. In fact I may just go back to one so no idea how you interpreted what i wrote that way seriously....

Report from http://www.sidhtech.com/ June 8th, 2013

I can't make the change because of the problems AOSP ROMS have with Bluetooth. I use BT a ton, don't want to have to do without.

This is what is so frustrating. If I could just use the most basic functionality of the phone I would be on 4.2. I have tried several, but have no choice but to return to 4.1 so I can use my phone safely in the car.

I use bluetooth in my car all the time and ive only used aosp roms and they all work great. I don't miss the s-pen at all. But I didn't buy it for the s-pen I bought it for the battery and the non-pentile amoled screen.

How do you place a call from bluetooth? Every 4.2 rom I have tried does not work for placing a call over bluetooth. This has also been a know issue from what I have read. Is there a fix?

SUperNatural
I removed some heavy libs ... and the stock browser.. the Device seems to be loving the free RAM about 60mb in system storage has been freed since last shaving... 2 lib files @ about 25mb each then the browser @12mb its faster than before very snappy now.
Something new to flash for flash-o-holic. Thanks for this. And a really fast download too.

very nice
hmmmmm... if battery life proves to be as good as the other tw rom, this could be a very nice daily driver...

I need further testing on the subject of battery... what i do know is that a lot of weight is off its 'shoulders', and a lot of battery eating apks are gone. So with that in mind battery should be better and the device should be quicker for the reason that all that extra RAM is waiting to be used whenever you want it be used rather than just keeping apps running in the background.

no that one is still posted on sourceforge. Supernatural is the same but a little lighter. I changed the name and lightened it up, I'm going to keep SUperNatural for a while =] so you're not missing a whole lot but I did notice that the 60+ MB I shaved off it seemed to respond more how I like it, right away. the web browser not including chrome.apk itself the sbrowser and the libs for chrome and sbrowser were over fifty MB. and the sbrowser was 12MB.. the ROMs we once had were 60 mb lol
I assume you can use any kernel? Like Adam Kernel per se.
Thanks!
