[Q] How to prevent the 4.2 update notification? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm pretty sure I've read this on somewhere here, but I cannot for the life of me find it. I've looked for it since morning, and yet, nothing. Anyone know how to prevent the Android 4.2 update notification from showing up? I was on 4.2.1, flashed back to 4.1.2, and plan on sticking to it.

you didnt look hard enough, i typed this into the search bar "4.2 update" and it lead me straight to the answer i posted it another post...
download fotakill.. push it to system/app. install it, then reboot

oh yeah i just tried a different set of search terms. found it, thanks.
mods, please delete the thread if you're reading this.

Stop OTA update notifications

I am running a custom rom and have recently been getting spamed with sprints OTA update notifications for the firmware and voice mail. From my understanding I can't install these since I have a rooted phone running a custom rom but I would like to stop getting notified about this update every few hours. How can I make it STFU?!
this has been answered many times over. search is your friend.
I tried that before taking the time to make a post and it was as useful as your response.
wow well have fun. I have helped many people and know for a fact if you push that little button called search this forum you will find it. its people like you who I won't help. if you can search for yourself using the criteria you posted in your first post you may have found this. it was the first one.

wow must admit that is pretty big of you and nice going. also have to say his lack of response from the forum was probably because he had to be about the 20th person to ask that same thing. I know it can be difficult to find things sometimes but I am a firm believer in a thorough search and that includes going page by page prior to posting.
nice to see things work out at xda.... Also I am the guy who posted a FOTAkill.zip file thats flashable to stop the OTA updates. Hopefully you found what you are looking for but if not just search for the zip I mentioned or look in UnNamed's thread in development
cool I didn't know you made a zip to do it. thanks.
I installed FOTAkill.apk a while back.
I have a Sprint Samsung Epic Touch.
I am running Rooted Stock EK02 and when the latest EL29 came out it was crappy. I went back to my Stock EK02 and kept getting the OTA update. I installed FOTAkill. Its been a few weeks.
My question is, Does simply removing the fotakill.apk from EDIT /system/app (i think thats where i removed it from) completely remove it or is that just the install app and the program is installed permanently and i cant remove it.
I ask because there is another potential update coming soon that seems to have a better modem package. I try to stay as basic stock as possible.
But this is my first time to want to remove a program like that. Its not showing up like other installed apps (duh because its a system app) so does removing the apk from that location remove it or is it still installed?
I don't know really. I haven't used the apk. but you can nAndroid backup and try it. couldn't hurt.

Can you share the apk or is it Market thing? I will test it. Also check in data/data to see if there's a folder there. If not, it should be gone

Remember all you will be doing is flashing the updates so removing this does nothing for you in that sense. If you have rooted your phone I am sure you will get the rooted versions and DO NOT DOWNLOAD OTA... You rooted for a reason

@sinkster
Is there another way??
Cuz my device isn't rooted, and no one around rooted it it!! As after install, I get a message of "Application not installed" :'(
device is MK802 Android Mini PC
thanks mate
The apk I uploaded needs to be either pushed with adb or moved to system/app with a root file explorer. Both require root, but if you don't have root then you can't remove it either... If you're looking for an ics like search box there's one free on the market.

Thank you for uploading that, it was exactly what i was looking for... I am rooted, and moved it to sys >apps but it doesnt work... it allows me to open in and type, and things auto populate, etc... but it doesnt ever actually search, or open the browser, etc after i hit enter... ??? and whenever i try to open settings, or click on anything in it, it freezes.. any ideas?
It is UNBELIEVABLY hard to find information in this version of google search... or even another google search ics apk for that matter. But on the ROM im using, the guy replaced google search with some other, hideous, quick search application and I would like to get rid of it and put google search back on, but am unable to download from google play, i am running on ICS 4.0.3.
Thanks alot!

Have you set the right permissions? Using root explorer or similar it should be: 1st row tick read, write: 2nd and 3rd row only read should be ticked. Screenshot's from my N5, but exactly the same settings.

Yes I did that back when i was trying to make it work... but then when i rebooted the device, it disappeared from the app list in sys > app and i couldnt find it anywhere else... so basically i just flashed Google Now (velvet.apk) onto it and i got that working fine, I realized that all i really had to do was delete my old Search app that the chef put on there and then my search button automatically made google now the default search. so i figured that one out atleast, that was bothering me hahaha... so i might be getting sick of this google now already though, it's laggy as hell and sometimes doesnt allow me to push on the links it provides, and is impossible to update.... so i might have to come back to this. in which case i shall post if i get it working on my device.
thanks for your help! keep on keepin on... hahaha
EDIT: you know what im gonna try to put it on again right now... haha. this google now thing aint gonna work out... haha. but maybe now that i deleted the other search it might work... we shall see *finger's crossed*

Download bar wont go away D=

Ive seen similar issues but cant find them in search..
anyways i was downloading a pic in chrome and i guess it didnt grab it and now its stuck saying "<Untiled>" and then "data" under it and then a download bar that moves and never stops.. any idea how to fix this? I restarted my phone, pulled battery, uninstalled chrome and reinstalled, force stoped, and still there.. any ideas?

Reworded search after i already posted this and found a NON phone specific thread saying take the file in your download folder and move it to a new location and it should say download unsuccessful.
Hope this helps anyone with similar issues.

Yeah, this very thing happened to me too. I did everything that you tried too. I almost posted on here for help as well. I opened up my download folder and just deleted the file. Then eventually the download bar disappeared.
Glad you posted this to help others that will eventually come across this!

[Q] Unknown 87.1 ota update today...

OK, today I received an android update notification for something that's 87.1 mb. I have a D851 running SR Lollipop G3 v. 4.0 (krowley3). I have OTA disabled in the engineering menu. I checked the cache and there's no file there yet. So... Does anyone know what this is, how it got around the engineering menu ota disable, and the easiest way to turn off the notification? *I long pressed the notification and it showed as Google Play services?? Now I'm really confused. Any thought? Thanks in advance.
Alright, I think I answered part of my question. I went and read the T-Mobile update information on 20e and it shows a 87.1 mb download. I wouldn't have thought it to be that small, but it is. So that leaves me with wanting to get rid of the notification nagging me every time I turn on the phone. Thanks in advance for your help.

Using a root explorer like ES File Explorer go to /cache/ folder and delete the update.zip file. Reboot your phone. If the notification is still there go back to /cache/ folder and make sure that file is not there. Then just take the OTA and it should error out because the zip file you deleted. The notification should be gone after booting up your phone again. But make sure you DELETE the UPDATE.ZIP before accepting the update from the notification.
This thread here by Autoprime should help you if my method doesn't work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/psa-stop-taking-ota-updates-update-t2909412
Went through the thread then went through the system files looking for anything obviously related to fota etc. , but nothing popped out that I felt comfortable modifying. I never downloaded the update so cache was empty. I eventually long pressed the notification (google Play services) and unchecked notifications. It got rid of notification. I guess I'll probably have manually check to update any apps, but I'll gladly take that over the never ending notification. Thanks again to all for the responses/help.
