[Q] Turning off randomly semi-boot loop - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

My s3 was running on Wicked Sensation and it was working perfectly. All of a sudden, my power button kept screwing up and then the phone randomly turned off. It was stuck in a boot loop but it turned off at random points in the boot process. It got as far as the wicked sensation loading screen a couple times but it didn't make it pass that. Next, I tried to clear cache and do a complete reset and that got the same result. I decided to restore my nandroid of CM10. Oh it takes a couple attempts to get to recovery. Most of the time it doesn't make it past the Galaxy s3 screen and turns back off. But eventually it made it to recovery and I was able to clear everything again and restore my nandroid back up. Now when booting, it occasionally makes it to the set up process and shuts back down. I was eventually able to complete it and the phone worked for 5 minutes but then it reset. I then decided to retry the nandroid back up and I eventually got back to the set up. Since that, I have not been able to complete it but I got to the gmail screen multiple times. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.
At first I thought maybe it was the power button being pressed down by something but comparing it to my dad's S3, it looks the same so as far as I can tell it's not that. I'm not at home but I will try to unroot and use Odin to flash back to stock. I'll update this then but until then, does anyone else have an idea what I should do? It doesn't seem like going back to stock will work but I've got my fingers crossed.
UPDATE #1: Well this is strange, if I keep the back door cover off just a bit it seems to work. Hmm.. I'm not sure if that's just a coincidence but I'm not willing to completely put it back on til I get home. Oh and if the screen times out it takes a while to turn it back on. I hope this isn't the symptoms of a pre-motherboard failure that some people are reporting... JK it turned off again
UPDATE #2: Okay so now I have another problem. The phone doesn't stay on long enough for me to unroot.. Damn.

Sounds like something went wrong with whatever you flashed...can you get into download mode and stay there without the phone powering down? If so, Odin back to stock: if not, u have a defective power button and you should see Sprint.

Yeah I think it might be the power button as well. I'm taking it in to Sprint today. Hopefully they don't notice it's on custom.. :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Phone won't turn on

Last night I had dropped my phone from about a foot on a sitting-swing and it hit the ground. I have the black case from the sprint store on it. After that I attempted to turn it on and it just got stuck on Samsung loading screen with the genocide 2.0 logo below it, it then proceeded to be stuck there and eventually rebooted, this never seemed to end. When I attempted to plug it in to charge it the battery charging icon appeared but just has the loading symbol inside of it frozen, after many battery pulls and attempted clockwork-recovery boots failing I decided to go to bed. When I awake I went and tried to turn on my phone which immediately booted up into clockwork recover, fearing for my phones safety I backed everything up on it and then rebooted it. It seemed to work fine! It came on flawlessly and worked well. Throughout the day the battery seemed to drain extremely fast and then eventually died, having just gotten home I have found that the same thing is happening and it won't even charge.
Re flash the ROM then flash journaling on zip right after you flash the ROM then re boot & download you're apps fresh cuz you're data might be corrupted! Hit the thanks button if I've helped in any way! ;-)

I flashed back to stock rom to see if it would turn on, same thing happens, and I don't know if this is significant or not but when my phone boots up the buttons light up, then turn off, then back on again and stay on until the phone reboots itself or the battery is pulled.
EDIT: I have a strong feeling it's my physical battery that is causing the issues because it was working completely fine earlier yesterday.
Try booting in safe mode by holding power and the physical menu button until the phone gets to the lockscreen... Im curious to see if it helps because safe mode might help us get out of soft bricks? I wanna test this theory...
No it does not work, just get stuck at the Samsung loading screen. I don't honestly believe this is a software brick either because of the way it's acting, as I said in my above post I believe it's the physical battery and will probably be going to get it replaced soon

Power button not working suddenly

Last night while using my phone it suddenly rebooted itself, and when it came back on the power button no longer worked. I could use the volume buttons to wake the phone, but even that stopped working after a while. I went to sleep and let it charge overnight, and when I woke up, all was working normally. Its been normal all day until a few min ago, the phone rebooted and now once again the power button wont work. Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions, besides take it to Sprint, which I will do if it continues?
Well I took it to a Sprint store and the tech said the button is physically fine, and worked when doing a hard reset but once the phone came back on it went back to not working again. So he thinks it's a software issue and ordered me a replacement. And my E4GT is completely stock, never rooted. Just decided to let u guys know just in case anyone else happens to have the same problem.

If it is a software problem which it sounds like to me I would root that thing and throw a rom on there and see if that works. Preferably Phantom Hackers Blazer rom 4.1 Pure win!

My power button isn't working either. My phone randomly reboots and isn't usable. My buddy gave me his old Samsung Moment to use It's like I'm back in the stone age with this thing. No insurance on my E4GT either FML.

It's still under a year old isn't it? Take it in and spend the $35.00 for Sprint to troubleshoot and replace it under warranty.
I was having this issue with my e4gt so i tried to flash a new ROM onto it. That didn't work, so I restored it to factory using this one-click Odin method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
Since the power button didn't function for me I had to use Terminal Emulator to reboot into download mode. Restoring to factory seemed to have restored the power button. I had a few phantom reboots but the phone has been running for 13 hours right now. Seems to be fixed. I plan on waiting a week before rooting it again, in case i decide to take it to Sprint.
Hope this helps

did that fix the problem? im on the universe 2.1 rom and for some odd reason while i left my phone on the table it all of a sudden rebooted and my power button wasnt working either? well can you let me know if that fixed the problem for you? I cant use the power button at all and whenever i take out my battery and put it back in, it automatically starts my phone up right when i put the battery in. but please let me know if urs is fine now. thanks
sh*t, nevermind i just tried to do the odin one click and it restored my factory settings and everything but the power button still doesnt work... =( damnit!!
ok nevermind that too... sorry for blowing up your post but just wanted to inform that i just applied more pressure to the power button and held it there for a few seconds and then let go and all of a sudden the power button started working again... i was reading through other posts about this and they said that it happens often with this phone... but this is how i ended up fixing mine if the odin one click doesnt work...

For those of you who don't have insurance, or those who this option is cheaper, they can replace the power button for $35. I didn't look if it includes shipping. If it were me, and I had a little more money, I'd get the power button and usb port changed to new ones at the same time. The port might go out eventually and it saves you the time and hassle of sending it in again. Hell, $75 is still cheaper than paying the $100 deductible if sprint tries to make you pay that for a refurb.
My phone started rebooting constantly since last week. I went back to the ICS 4.03 ROM and it was ok for a few days and then it starting rebooting again yesterday. Today once the phone screen goes off it comes back on and when i press the power button to turn the screen off, it restarts. The only time it acts normal is when it is charging. I do have insurance so I'm thinking about removing the superuser app and taking it to sprint. My question is will they try fixing it before giving me a replacement & will it be refurbished? I'm at wit's end with this phone. I loved this phone until last week

I did that & it was ok for a few days then it started again...today it worked better than most days but the power button still wont turn the screen off if I press it
I have the same symptoms with mine, which started 2 days ago while out of town. The only difference being my power button goes from hyper-sensitive in that if I even brush my finger by it it closes the screen to not registering anything no matter how hard I click. Any way to tell via logs, etc if this is hardware or software? Phone is unuseable with the constant reboots...
Update
Had been running Calks 3.0 before the power button issue, so decided to start over to see if it helped:
1) Ran Calks Format All
2) Reflashed 3.0
3) Ran his Bare ROM Converter
Result: Problem disappeared, so far. Will report back if anything changes, but worth a complete reformat and reflash try since I am out of warranty as an original adopter 9/16/11.
this just happened to me while running cm10 alphas. power button wouldn't work at all and occasionally it would just reboot.
i full wiped and installed one of agat's mods. we'll see what happens.

Everything was perfect since the re-flash UNTIL I took a flight and the same problem with the power button started again. Whats funny is the last time the same thing happened. Chain of events:
1) Two weeks ago phone was perfect running Calks 3.0 GB ROM and had been for the last 3-4 months. Stock rooted for 5 months prior.
2) Went to airport, phone went thru security scanner and boarded plane.
3) Prior to departing, checked phone and noticed the power button didnt turn screen back on.
4) Pulled battery/ put back in, and the phone rebooted without me pressing the power button, which it never had previously.
5) Phone boots back up to lockscreen, and notice the power button is hyper-sensitive (If I lightly brush my finger against it, the "Power Off, Reset, Recovery...." screen pops up. Its like the power button has become a capacitance button like the four at the bottom face of the phone.
6) Try using, and it randomly reboots, even completely avoiding the right edge of the phone (power button side)
7) If phone screen is allowed to go dark, power button wont awaken it, but volume buttons sometimes will...Also, plugging/unplugging into charger will awaken screen. If I reboot the phone with it charging, it turns off and goes into charging mode with the green battery bar graph.
8) Struggled with the phone screen turning on/off, randomly rebooting with/without touching, turning, using, etc.
9) Arrived home and after many attempts, booted into Rogue Recovery, wiped/all format/reflashed Calks 3.0/Bare ROM converter and phone was just as it was before....Until 5 days later when I boarded another flight.......Why?

Possible brick

Hi. Running TWRP with a CM10 Nightly (8/14 I think). Well I wasn't doing anything special and the phone decided to reboot and then just started the haptic feedback boot loop, no samsung logo. I took the battery out let it sit for about a minute and put it back in. Started on it own, got to a samsung logo and then rebooted back to the black screen and buzzing.
After everything I have tried I figured out it can boot into anything but only for about 10 seconds with pulling the battery and letting it sit. Download mode shows up then reboots. TWRP can boot up to the splash screen then it reboots.
I'm at work right now so I am unable to try any advanced methods for getting this back up, but download mode reboots worry me. Do I need to warranty it out?

This happened to my T989 a couple of days ago as well... I was pretty sure it wasn't a software brick as I hadn't been tinkering with the phone at all since putting CM9 on it a few weeks back. But an issue with the power button makes sense, I was actually able to boot it up and/or get it into recovery just by continually pressing the power button (guessing this interrupts the signal that the broken button is sending)... of course as soon as you stop pressing the button, the phone shuts off again.
I'll have to look into the mobiletech repair.
Temporary Fix to get your backup
I had a co-worker have this happen to her T989 that I flashed CM10 to. I was afraid that something had happened and she had unintentionally done something to brick the phone (it had been running fine for about a week prior to this). It is definitely hardware related, as you can just touch the power button and it goes into a screen wake/sleep fit of rage before finally hard resetting (presumably because it thinks the power button has been held down for 10 seconds). I was finally able to get it to stop rebooting long enough to get a TWRP backup and get them downloaded off of the phone so that she can get a replacement; and here is how I did it.
If you are getting boot cycle and it is vibrating every 3 seconds you can get it to "unstick" by putting your fingernail as far behind the power button as possibly and prying out. This will unstick it.
EDIT: I wanted to point out that I was most successful when I pried from the top or the back of the device. Sometimes when you pry it, if your finger slips it will redo the stick and will continue to reboot. So if at first you don't succeed...
Once you have done this, it is VERY sensitive. I literally had it start boot cycling one time after accidentally bumping the desk the phone was sitting on. Prying the button back allowed me to boot back up.
If you get it unstuck, be very careful about setting it down, turning it power button side up and even looking at it cross and you should be able to get it to stop rage quitting long enough to get a backup performed and even copied to your sdcard/computer.
I hope someone finds this useful.
On a side note: co-worker has purchased her phone outright and is planning on sending it back for a replacement. Should I flash it back to stock before that happens or since she owns it outright will they even care?
TIA,
Same thing happened to me awhile back and like said above, I sent it to MobileTechVideos and had my phone back within a week fixed and perfect. I have used MobileTechVideos twice now and both times they have fixed my T989 without problem.

I took it to a repair shop, where I was told to send it to Samsung to do a heavy-duty root. The power button does need to be replaced because there is no spring when you push down on it. I have no idea if there's a root glitch. Has anyone sent their phone to Samsung? What happened? Are there alternatives?
Thank you!

It was amazing, I had the same problem but all i did was open up the back up undoing all the tiny screws and then took a can on compressed air and sprayed out the power button and its been working for more than a month now with the problem completely gone! try that first before sending to sammy.
Ok I am in the same boat. My device does not boot up, it will get to Samsung logo and restart half the time and the other half just vibrates every 2 seconds. I removed the battery while plugged in and it still vibrates. I took it apart and blew the power button with compressed air and nothing. Here is the funny thing if I bang the hell out of it, it almost boots up. Is there something that I can do less than sending it to Sammy ? If not I will sell it on craigslist for parts.

Here is the funny thing if I bang the hell out of it, it almost boots up. Is there something that I can do less than sending it to Sammy ? If not I will sell it on craigslist for parts.

Same thing here. Only way to get it to power on is by hitting it, the harder the better it seems. After it turns on, touching the power button will make it go in to the restart loop 90% of the time. This sucks!
For me this started after I dropped my phone...with the case on and on carpet. I have also opened it up and sprayed with compressed air to no avail.

Hi Folks,
I had the same problem, the problem started when I dropped my fone on carpeted floor, here are symptoms
Fone restarts on its own, start the boot, inbetween the boot starts again, then, keeps vibrating every two seconds, you have to pull the battery out to stop it,
As soon as you put the battery back in, it restarts, again getting stuck, and then vibrating every two secods,
Here is what i did
- Cursed Samsung for making a sh***y phone - Didnt work
- Smacked my phone with whatever I could fine - Didnt work
- Opened all the screws up, took apart phone, pulled out the power button module (pcb), noticed power button was loose, put some glue into it, dried it, put it back, & ITS BEEN WORKING SINCE THEN ! It was a hardware fault, its not software !
Just my two cents, it worked in my case, I cannot guarantee if it will in your case too, try at your own risk !!

It was amazing, I had the same problem but all i did was open up the back up undoing all the tiny screws and then took a can on compressed air and sprayed out the power button and its been working for more than a month now with the problem completely gone! try that first before sending to sammy.

Same issue with SGH-M919. I was rooted and the rom I tried to use wouldn't work because the kernel caused some issues so I figured I would go back to stock. The device wouldn't go into recovery mode, so I flashed the stock rom via Odin. After the ROM loaded, the phone reset and I saw the Samsung screen then it rebooted and so on each time. It's not the power button as it works, has the spring feel to it and the phone would come one by itself if it was broken. So what can I do or am I in trouble?
Also, the phone will vibrate every 2 seconds

Sure, the power button will "work", but if it's constantly vibrating and rebooting, it's probably an issue with the power button. Do what it shows in the video I posted, and if you do it right it'll probably fix it. I gad to attempt it twice as it didn't fix it the first time, but it's been like 4 months and I haven't had an issue since.
Thank you but it was the kernel causing problems. Somehow, the new ROM messed up the partitions and subsequently required a full wipe including all data then I flashed the stock ROM back via Odin and it was fine. I rooted it again and flashed Bliss Pop 1.8 and I love that ROM. No issues at all. Thanks for the help. I'm slowly learning about ROMs and Linux etc.. I appreciate the help. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can learn more??? Where do I post to get past this 10 posts rule???

Wow I just realized that post was from a week ago and that was for my girls S4. We got rid of it anyway. My response was regarding my Sprint LG G3 which I am slowly mastering.
Same thing here but here i have a Lenovo …idk what to do

[Q] Soft Bricked or Hard Bricked? (Please, PLEASE help!!!)

I have a SPH L710 galaxy s3 (sprint). I recently flashed a Rom called hyperdrive 4.1.2 that was on it's RLS11. following the instructions (factory reset x2, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe system), I then picked the features i wanted in the built in aroma installer and let the rom flash. When it was done I noticed i kept getting the message "the process com.android.phone has stopped". So i performed a clean install of my previous Rom which was Liquid Smooth.
A day or two later I noticed hyperdrive has released it's RLS 12, so i decided to give it another try. This time there was an option in the aroma installer for developer picks so i selected that, thinking my previous attempt i may have picked conflicting files in the aroma installer. The Rom worked fine for about a day. Then the next day while it was charging after the battery have completely died the night before. I noticed the phone had rebooted on its own, then it started going into a boot loop. I did a battery pull, and i noticed when i put it back in, before i could even hold the buttons to get it into recovery mode or download mode, the phone would vibrate and turn on by itself, without me pressing any buttons at all. After some trying i was able to have the buttons held so when i inserted the battery, i was already holding the buttons to try to get to recovery. When I did this it would say it was about to go into recovery, then the screen would go black. The same thing when I tried getting it into download mode, It would show the download mode screen, then go to a black screen. I Then did some research, after seeing no one else really having this problem, and noticing that since it was still seeing boot screens before the black screen, it shouldn't be a hard brick.
I decided to order a USB jig for my phone that came today. When inserted the battery with the usb jig the phone still turned on by itself, but it was able to go to download mode and it stayed at the screen. I used odin 3.07 to flash SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Nodata, which was a tar file you would use if you wanted to keep your user data. It took 10 minutes to flash but everything seemed to be a success, it rebooted my phone and everything seemed to be working fine. After about 20 minutes of my phone being plugged back into a charger and i was halfway through with downloading an app from the android market where out of nowhere my phone temporarily froze and then rebooted, to where it will show the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then just goes to a black screen. Now even with the USB jig, it will still power on by itself as soon as a place in the battery, go directly to download mode, but then go to a black screen within 3-4 seconds before i can do anything.
Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? At first i thought it might be a stuck power button, but when I was able to flash through download mode with the USB jig that first time it makes me think it is bricked. Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

How long did you let it set on the black screen because it takes a while to boot up the first time after flashing a ROM.

Well i just placed the battery back in, it started on it's own without my pressing anything again, and i've been timing the last 5 minutes. but it seems like it will stay a black screen indefinitely. unless i remove the back of the phone, or snap it back into place, or any kind of micro impact movements it seems, when I do that it vibrates like it's first being turned on, and shows the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then it will go black again.
See if your adb on your computer can recognize the phone while it's stuck on the black screen. You might be able to push a Rom or recovery over using that.

You may want to just start fresh and lose your data with a different stock file. That kinda happened to me before on the gs2 and I found better results with a 100% fresh start. The no data always left me with a hangup or two after getting the phone to boot.

After the first odin flash i was thinking the same thing. But that's the thing, it won't stay on the download mode screen long enough for me to even try to flash anything else through odin. I'm also noticing when connected to the charger, if i make a slight impact against the phone with my palm, the screen will briefly show the battery icon as if the phone is charging when it is turned off, then the screen will go black again. When it is unplugged, is when it will show the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then go black again.
That's weird...sounds like something is loose. Any kind of recent impact damage to the phone? Dropping it, throwing it at your cat, anything like that?
To me it sounds like maybe your power button is stuck "down"
If you didn't know, the power button has a fail safe reboot that happens after holding for about 10 seconds. So no matter what, if you phone is frozen or whatever, holding power more than 10s will cause it to reboot. That would also explain why its turning itself on as soon as you pop in the battery.

not recently, and if it was ever dropped, it would be in it's case... But i had noticed that while it was in it's power glove case, sometimes i would have to use more than normal pressure on the power button to get the phone to respond. I was wondering if something was stuck, just haven't read anything like that happening to anyone, and when I used the jig the first time the screen stayed on.
