I've seen a lot of people asking about something like this lately, so I thought I'd dig up its grave and share it here to. ... Some of you may remember this from the Eris and OG Inc forums as well.
This is a very simple script that utilizes the radiooptions command to disable the radio but still allow use of WiFi. I wanted to make it to be run in init.d on startup but haven't successfully got it working that way yet so for now it can be run with script manager. This script can be run as follows:
1. Download the script and place it somewhere on your SD Card. (Maybe make a folder named Scripts to keep things organized)
2. Download Script Manager from the market.
3. Open Script Manager and navigate to where you saved the script then select the script.
4. Check the options for run as root and if you always use wifi only because you don't have service on your device check off Run at boot as well.
5. When prompted by superuser allow superuser permissions.
I have tested this script on my Incredible and my Eris as well and should be universal to run on any android device.
Download Here
If you are using this on an inactive device and don't want the activation screen coming up after reboot and new ROM flash follow these simple steps.
*NOTE: you need to be using a ROM that has EPST.apk (Sense or stock based) in it for this procedure to work.
1. Select emergency call and dial ##778.
2. Select edit and enter service password 000000.
3. Select NAM Settings.
4. Change Mobile Directory number to 0000000000 (Ten digits).
5. Change MIN1 to 0000000 (Seven digits).
6. Change Mobile Country Code to 000 (Three digits).
7. As you back out "Commit the Change".

I honestly never tried gps with it on mine since I rarely even use it on my phone. I know it won't for navigation unless its tethered to your phone since nav requires a data connection. For location only, I would lean towards saying no, but I'd have to try it first to say for certain which I can't do atm since I don't have one of my inactive phones with me right now.

GPS does not require an Internet connection. There are apps available that store the map data locally on the device. I use one. The downside of offline GPS is you don't get live traffic, you have to manually update the maps, and satellite lock is much slower when it doesn't have the assistance of WiFi or cell tower triangulation.
On topic, I use Tasker to do this (and start GrooVe IP) automatically whenever I connect to a WiFi network.
This is awesome CS, thanks so much

Yes and no. You can only use the GPS when you're in range of a WiFi network. GPS requires a mobile connection to function, so it will only work in WiFi.

you are right when it comes to gmaps, but i think i have seen other navigators that can store info on the phone, like in a car, so you coukd download the map data once, then use nav anywhere without internet connection. i can't for the life of me remember the app name though

I wasn't referring Nav apps, just the GPS functionality. I'm pretty sure that it works workout any data or wifi because I use the app Endomondo to track my jogging routes and it works fine on my disconnected Inc2.
I'd love to get the extra battery savings from disabling the cell radio, but don't want Bork the GPS.
Also, if (god forbid) I break my newer phone, would I be able to Re enable the service to the food olé Inc2?
Thanks for your help

How far are we from seeing wireless tetherable kernels? Is there a reason we don't see them already? Anything I can do to help? Hope there is a solution soon!
I have no first hand experience (yet) but I thought that Android Wireless Tether worked, you just needed to tell it you were using a Nexus One or some malarkey like that.
You have to set it to ad hoc mode as well...my xoom can't detect it when I do that

i have wireless tether working just fine on stock kernel
wireless tether works fine untill you actually use it...te device thats using the connections gets rdirected to a verizon page prompting you to buy the tethering service. I head this was at the kernel level which would make sense, because my DX, OG Droid, and thunderbolt all tether no problems witout the redirct.

No, it does work, as long as you are rooted, set the device to nexus one, and use ad-hoc mode. Any other configuration redirects to verizon.

This set-up doesnt work on my R800x. To get it to work I have to set the devise to a CDMA device. If I set it to a GSM devise I cant connect to it. So if anyone else is having an issue getting it to work on the r800x try setting it to a CDMA devise.
I have mine set to nexus one and it works I tether daily

I've tried every combo with the app "Wifi tether" (the main popular one) with regular phone models and "CDMA" models (supposed to be the ones that work) to no avail!
It always clocks in like .4 kbs of data then stops...and then verizon pop up comes up if i try to access internet through the phone....and computer can't even connect to the hotspot

If you please could.....what are the EXACT settings you use?
I really try dozens of different things and it errors or the computer/kindle fire can't connect....
can you go setting by setting what you do to get it to work?
Things you will need:
1) rooted phone
2) root explorer app (paid)
3) sqlite editor (paid - root explorer will direct you to it)
*** Now that cm9 is available I wanted to update this posting to let you know that these instructions are for stock gingerbread as well as the custom gingerbread roms. Cm9 has this option natively and you won't need to do this on cm9. Just want to save anyone from having problems with cm9. Now if your on gingerbread, go for it. ***
Now go to this directory with root explorer:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
(You will have an option to open it with the internal viewer or SQLite editor, choose SQLite editor)
Select secure
Now locate tether_entitlement_check_state and change the value to 0 then save and reboot.
Now you can use the built in tethering without the pop-up saying that you don't have a tethering plan.
I hope this helps you guys out.
Disclaimer: As chrisd1a1 pointed out doing this is at your own risk as far as breaking your terms of service with at&t. I do not know if at&t can detect this or what the result will be if they do. I'm just throwing this out there as another option.

This is exactly why I'm using the ClockWorkMod app. I've already been kicked off my unlimited data plan once for "unauthorized tethering" and it was hell getting back on the plan. The loophole to do so is no longer available, so I really don't want to get kicked again.
I'll have to wait and see how it works out for others. But good job on showing us the way to enable it. Thumbs up!
If I'm not mistaken, the tether_entitlement_check_state will not be available in the database until first attempt enabling tethering.
interesting thread. moved to DEV as this could be handy for future development.
the only disclaimer I'll put in is that it's at your own risk if you break any terms of service from your carrier....

No it doesn't. Wifi is internal on the Android System. And I have no root and I won't root it because of warranty. :/ So that means I can't use a rom with a wifi bug !! :/
Yeah app locker I saw but my dad said no wifi :/
What don't they just put a new password on the WiFi and disable your internet?
Yea too bad you can't root. But the only warranty it voids is HTC's, so it doesn't really matter since if something happens, it goes through your insurance usually.
Rooting= get stock Rom, remove all WiFi modules and files from kernel and Rom, problem solved.

Maybe I am thinking to technical. But you should be able to set your home modem with a MAC filter so that you are blocked on WiFi. I would suggest an ip filter but that normally comes with ups and downs as your phone will look for a new ip later. If you can get your folks to just set up a MAC filter then they can shut down the internet at certain times when you are not allowed to have it and it will function when you are allowed. I do this with my son, all his devices even his xbox get no internet access after 9:30. Every new device he brings home I lock it down. But thats just me.

Also, check your security settings. Some devices will not see a wireless network with security settings it can't support.
Rarely, because it's an international thing, channel settings can also prevent discovery. Just something to think about. Not that it should be an issue but may want to double check.

Android has issues with ad hoc sometimes. Certain devices like the Kindle fire can only use infrastructure based wifi due to the chipset used and/or the drivers included. Infrastructure mode is a more robust and stable network vs ad hoc too. I get about an extra 20' in range on infrastructure vs ad hoc. On infrastructure I can cover my entire 3600 sqft house with 1 access point getting 2-3 bars at the farthest end of the house, with ad hoc the back side of my house gets very weak or no signal at all. If your router/hotspot is capable I'd recommend settinf it up in infrastructure mode with the same ssid and security key (if you use one) and go from there

You said your phone's reception sucks at work. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong. Are you trying to get better data connection or phone connection? If phone, piggybacking off a router or PC won't help you to make calls if you can't now, unless you're using some form of voip on the phone. The SMS and phone voice run on the same line (I think). If you put the phone into airplane mode, but turned on wifi, you wouldn't receive calls or text. You'd only be able to do data. You have to be on a sprint tower to use the phone part.
Also, if you want your phone to get on adhoc and you can't now, you need a modified wpa_supplicant file for this phone. I don't know how to mod the file but a simple file swap and reboot would do it. At least that's how I did it with my original sprint galaxy 7" tab.

Reception is fine, it's just that data speeds at work are painfully slow. If I have a lot of apps to update on my phone, would be nice to just piggy back into the work network and do it that way.
My research has indicated that I'll need a modified wpa_supplicant, like you said, and I've tried some that are floating out there but they all seem to bork my wifi and I haven't been able to locate one specifically for the E4GT. Also, I have no idea how to mod it myself lol

Maybe ask a Note 2/3 dev.

Is there a Sprint G2 Wifi Tether mod out there or in the works?

Yes please anyone? Also I wish there was list of Roms and Mods in a single location for our Sprint version. I'm having difficulties finding anything.

Check the g2 forum again. If you're using the app trying unsubscribing then check again. I had to force stop and cleared cache too because I didn't see it at first either.

I need this as well. Hiding the soft keys and wifi tether are the main reasons I rooted.

Same here
I got wireless tether w/Treve mod to run without the provisioning message....i just can't get it to show an SSID to clients. It's apparently pretty common with this app, still playing with it.

I am not sure if the TreveMod is going to help. I have encountered your situation before where when you activate the wifi tether, everything looks good and dandy but the thing is it never broadcasts the SSID. I guess continue tweaking all the settings and let us know if you can get it working.

I have used these instructions successfully on another phone and tab. Not saying that it will work here, but it's worth a shot. Please post results and I'm about to get this phone in the next week.
Thanks.

The wifi treve-mod is what bimmerdood has been testing with. This treve-mod doesn't seem to work on 2013 smartphones. It may appear that the mod works because it will attempt to start a wifi tether session on your phone but it doesn't broadcast the SSID of your phone to say your laptop or tablet to connect to.

How did you get this to work? I don't care if the SSID is broadcast or not, as long as it works still.
Morning. Rooted now so figure it's time to get on this.
As it seems others have done I want to try the wifi tether that I have on the N2 and see what happens.
I'll post updates as I get moving on this.

Yeah, i found lots of instances in my searches where the SSID wouldn't broadcast. We press on!
OK, using the Wifi Tether - TrevE Mod - Auto model....
Everything seems to work except setting ad-hoc mode. Data is working but wifi not visible.
Let me play around with it a little more.
I know it's been said already but it seems something - whether in wpa_supplicant or F/W - is blocking ad-hoc mode.
I'm going to keep poking around in the time I have left today.
Well, not sure if this is progress.
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Netd
Starts with no errors but can't see it. Can't see a signal either in Wifi Analyzer.
Can someone point me to this TrevE-Mod everyone is talking about? Id like to download it.
