[Q] Otterbox or smart dock - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I would really like to use the smart dock to connect my note 2 up to my HDTV and to be able to use USB at the same time. Having an otter-box defender means that I cannot use the dock.
My question is, how fragile is the note 2, could I get away with using a regular flip case that covers the back and the screen, or would I be.taking a big risk? I don't have a job that has a great chance of damage to the phone, I am school teacher. However, my main worry is that using a flip case would mean my taking it out of its case to put it into my car holder, and the risk of it falling in the car.
I have had my previous handset fall in the car more than once ŵhen the cradle fell of the windscreen, and would be worried that this would kill my note 2. I appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Is there a cable that will give me some of the functionality of the dock that I could use with the otterbox?
My otterbox is still packaged, and has not been opened yet, so I could send it back for credit towards the smart dock, but am just unsure whether that would be too big a risk or not. Is the otterbox an essential item in my situation, or overkill? What do you guys think?
Thanks for ŷour thoughts.
Duncan

That solves the display problem, but not the USB problem.
I've got the same concern. My Note 2 is in an Otterbox Commuter, which is a tad smaller, but still won't work. I'm thinking of buying the dock and butchering it with a Dremmel to make it work with the Otterbox.

Galaxy Note Docking Station

Hey,
has anybody already tried out the docking station?
Is it possible to fit the Note including a flip case into the station?
Does the station have an audio/video out or is it only for charging?

Sorry... docking station ? More details please?.
It has a speaker out port, but sadly is not compatible with the flip case; too much extra bulk around the side and back. Very nice if you don't use the flip case, though, the Note slips easily into the dock, and it looks elegant.

Wow, that docking is pretty nice. It looks like the leather flip cover will still work with it. Now the questions is where can I get one.
i received it today, its nice and much easy to put and pull the phone. in the box there is only the dock, they dont add nothing else. u can turn it landscape (with the phone docked). 49€ with shipping, in italy, expensive...

34 Euro is the cheapest I could find here in Germany.. still very expensive @[email protected]
I wouldn't say it fits fine with the flip case; because of the extra bulk on the side, some pressure is required to jam it in, and because of the extra bulk on the back, the Note has to be tilted forward to mate with the USB connector, and you can't just drop it into the dock. You can make it work, but it's really not comfortable, and I'd be worried about damaging the connector. If they showed someone dropping it into the dock on the video, it would not look quite such a good combination.
That Dock would be just perfect if it came with an external battery fitted within it to be used as a stand while away from a power source.
Might still get one though.

Here are some nice pictures by a German fellow:

The official dock does not seem to allow use of an MHL adaptor on the back of the dock. Power still goes to the Note but no HDMI output. Tried several times, even tried internal/external speakers settings in "Dock" but no difference - still no video.
Can anyone else confirm?
PS. The dock does not come with a power supply, you just use you existing PSU/lead.

Have you actually experienced this, or are you speculating? I don't believe the Samsung flip case adds any extra bulk at the back, as it replaces the original back cover.

I have the cover and dock. I watched the video and though the Note did fit in the dock with the cover and ordered both, but it doesn't.
One the left side the back cover is thicker to allow room for the leather flap. You can still use the dock by titling the phone forward at the top but the the only thing supporting the phone is the dock connector.
Once I get a screen protector I'll remove the cover as I'd like to use the dock and it will be easier to use with my car dock.
The case does make holding the phone easier and it feels more secure in your hand.

Yes, I have. The back is more substantial than the rather flimsy original battery cover, making e.g., the camera more recessed, and the extra width of the flap doesn't help the device slide down, either.
So is the dock useless if you have the flip cover-case on? Or can you use the dock, although the phone doesn´t fit "perfectly"? I´m considering getting both accessories, but am a bit confused.

If you are one of the owners of the new Samsung Galaxy Note, you can now order some accessories for delivery by the end of the month.
Available for order now are the desktop dock, car kit, MHL/HDMI adapter and stylus holder kit.

Samsung Galaxy Note Desktop Dock:

I wouldn't use them together. It's a really tight fit because of the flip on the left, so doesn't slide down as easily as the naked Note, and needs to be jammed in. Because of the thicker battery cover, when the microUSB connector is mated, the Note is tilted forward, putting stress on the connector.

Samsung OEM Car & Desk dock

Just got my OEM car & desk dock from eBay (they aren't easily available in Canada yet).
First off, I have a T989D aka Galaxy S2 X (from Telus in Canada) and it fits (of course, as the hardware is the same).
Long story short:
Car dock:
The car dock is fantastic. It's a hard rubber that flexes easily enough to get the phone in and out without much trouble. It has a tab on one end to assist.
If you need a car dock, don't think twice, buy it.
Desk Dock
I wasn't sure how they were going to deal with the "chin" on the bottom of the phone. Basically, the dock doesn't have any front-to-back support for the phone... it's not a "slot". However, there is some friction so the phone doesn't flop around. That said, don't be tossing it around with the phone in it, as you'll risk breaking off the USB port that the phone is docked to.
Otherwise, it's great. It doesn't have an active speaker (like some pics show), but a little duct so the phone's sound can get out.
Photos please?

Add me to the list of satisfied customers for the car dock. As soon as you plug in the USB port, it goes to Car mode (VLingo leaves a little bit to be desired though). The dock is a perfect fit for the phone (probably won't be able to use a case with it though) and seems to be of good quality. Very sturdy.

+ 1 and/or a video ?
I have both of these as well. The car dock is a VERY tight fit. So tight that sometimes I can't get the phone out of it without hitting one of the buttons. I don't like that for some reason when the dock is connected and an aux cable is used sound does not automatically rout to the car speakers and instead still tries to go through the phone speaker. Is that normal??
The desktop dock I love. The USB port has just a little bit of give so that I can pull the phone out from the front without using the sides of the phone and hitting a volume button or unlock button.

I bought the multimedia desktop dock about a month ago at the T-Mobile store for $50.00+tax. Looks like you got a better deal online. To tell you the truth, I'm not that impressed with it. I think i bought it because I had just got the Hercules and I wanted all the cool accessories to be even cooler. Lol. Its basically a very expensive phone charger. Just my thoughts, don't let my opinion change your mind. I actually put it on Craigslist yesterday for $30.00. Lol...

Not sure. There's a docking part of the mount that slides into the phone's microUSB. Could be a magnet. I don't think it's solely software, because you put any other microUSB into the phone and it won't go into car mode.

This "car mode" you speak of is using the stock launcher I presume which doesn't go into landscape mode without it(car mode). if I'm correct, do any of you know how to unleash landscape mode without activating car mode? I'm using go launcher because it's the fastest launcher I've found that has landscape mode but I'm wondering if the stock launcher is faster.

Galaxy note car mount

Yeah but the official Samsung one uses a suction cup
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note using Tapatalk
the official samsung units have an amazing suction cup.
I had an official Samsung car dock for my P1000 Tablet, There was no way in hell that thing was ever going to fall off.
even sitting on the windshield in 40degC days (Australian summer), and cool night temp changes didn't move that sucker.
Hell, I had struggles getting it to release when I wanted it to release...
Samsung dont skimp on their kit... its why it costs so much more.
I have a proclipusa car mount. So I recently got the Regular Adjustable Holder with Tilt/Swivel here. You can get Proclipusa holders with the charging ports built-in as well specifically designed for the Note - but I wanted something I can use for future devices if needed. The adjustable holder works with my thin Rearth Ringke Slim case as well. I think I may need to add some extra padding to make it a little more snug and secure feeling. It seems to wobble a bit because the slot is a bit thicker than the Note (crazy thin btw).
I use a PHONEclip, which attaches the G-Note directly to the steering Wheel.
You can find detailed info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22252176&postcount=24
In the same thread also more info about the above mentioned 'breffo spiderpodium'
Went on Amazon, spiderpodium reviews were mixed, many found it to be very low quality construction.
That steering wheel clip sounds interesting, unfortunately I have a boxwave case on my phone. Probably wont fit.
Are there any US etailers selling the official Samsung one?

hahahaha!!! So true and so unintentionally funny to envision, in mid-air-bag-deployment-to-face-contact! lmao
I can see the coroner's quote now:
"There's a good chance he'd have survived the impact with no more than a contusion and a couple of scrapes, but the force of the air-bag drove his near tablet-sized device clear through his skull and out the back side of his spinal column in what appears to be less time than it takes a humming bird to make a single wing-flap."
hmmm, you have a point there. So it's a choice between convenience or safety, difficult decision...
To answer seriously, I've checked it on my car and I think that it isn't a problem. The PHONEclip is made from a very strong material. So in stead of breaking, I expect it to work like a hinge and simply turn over the top of the steering wheel.
Proclip = Brodit
IMHO
for all my previous and recent smartphones I ever used Proclip holders in my car(s)
The Proclip platform is specific to each car model and the holder(s) are specific to each smartphone. I am using active holders with charging and I am very satisfied with it every time.
No excluding with my newest Samsung Galaxy Note too
I have the Samsung Car mount, and I am very disappointed.
It is a pain to insert the phone in the very tight clips, then you have to slide the usb connector into the phone, an exercise that takes two hands.
Further it does not accomodate even the very thin Samsung flip cover.
It forces the phone into car mode, which requires voice input - which does not work. - at least with my voice. I cannot call 'Nora' it will only find Laura - and I don't have a strong accent. It has no means of understanding what 'Home' means.
And now, after a month, it appears that contacts inside the car unit are flakey - the phone goes crazy when I plug it in.
So great phone, but they screwed up royally on the car mount.
So where can I get this Samsung Car Mount?
Mountek
Mountek has a universal car mount that sits in your CD slot for around $20.

What Car dock do you guys recomend for Galaxy S III?

1) activate car mode (is there one?, my atrix had it)
2) must be in landscape
3) attaches to the window
4) will work with galaxy S III that has a case on it.
walmart dude
i just picked up a mount for my galaxy s II at Walmart yesterday. nothing special but it mounts to the window/dash. and it has PLENTY of room for even the bulkiest of cases. don't know what its called at the moment but it was down by the ipod accessories. it has an iphone in the display picture but it fits.
I went online today to ask if Samsung has any immediate plans to release a custom car dock for the S3 and the customer service rep claimed there are no official plans as of now. I'm sure they'll come out with one eventually and that this isn't any sort of groundbreaking news but at least it's some sort of "official" statement. I did not contact the number she gave at the bottom of the chat transcript though I may try later on if I get some free time.
Edit: I realize now this was an automated response system I was dealing with rather than 'Lisa'. Apologies.

Derp, skipped over bullet point number 4.
Pretty sure you won't get card ock mode with any 3rd party dock unless you program a NFC sticker for the device.
I've used Arkon products in the past and they always seemed to work. As far a using one with a case attached to your device, I wouldn't know, but you may have to do some measuring to ensure it will fit within one of these mounts:

Unless you can find another dock that includes a magnet (I guess you could always add one) to force car mode, then yes.
I'm using a Garmin Nuvi mount and it fits my S III perfectly with its case on. Its small and very secure on the dash or windshield. The only downside I have to use a separate usb charger which doesn't activate the car dock mode.

They say the ibolt dock that just came out should work. It's a little expensive for my taste but looks to work even with an otterbox commuter case, but not defender.

Im in the same boat as you. I think the best we are going to do is getting just any we like and add an NFC sticker on it to change the mode for us. The iBolt will do this, but not sure I want to spend $50 for that, when I can get one with a charger for $20 and I have some NFC stickers already. Im not going to take the case off everytime I want to dock the thing for sure , otherwise Id grab the infuse one.
It looks like most of them will fit on my Garmin bean bag mount so I dont have to stick it on the windshield each time as I live in Texas and it wont stay on in the heat all day Im sure.
with ibolt you have to remove the case?
I went with the ibolt it does all you have listed but it is a bit pricey. So far though, it is sturdy. To answer the post above, no you dont have to remove the case. I hear it fits the otterbox so thick cases probably work too.

What Car dock do you guys recomend for Galaxy S III?
Looking for something that would do following:
1) activate car mode (is there one?, my atrix had it)
2) must be in landscape
3) attaches to the window
4) will work with galaxy S III that has a case on it.

Unless you can find another dock that includes a magnet (I guess you could always add one) to force car mode, then yes.

The GS3 dock modes aren't set by magnets but a specific resistance across 2 of the USB pins.
There is a different resistance for the car and desk modes.. There is a thread around that specifies those values.

Just upgraded from my bionic to this sweet phone & ordered the 4200 mah extended w/nfc from amazon for $19.
I made a custom car dock and docking station for the bionic- I was going to integrate HDMI & a usb hub (kind of like this ultrabook docking station) so ppl could use Motorola's Webtop Software more easily... but the # of ppl w/Bionics seems to have diminished extensively.
Anyway, I'm wondering if folks have any dreams for a sgs3 accessory that they'd like to exist.
I want the Mugen dock w/HDMI but it looks like it's out of stock until September... so I may design one myself. lmk any thoughts!

O_O man that printer is just insane. I've seen one in action and in some cases they have them in stores where you can just go an pay a certain amount for the object your printing
3D printers are amazing, and have really come down in price. I remember the first laser printers were in the $5000 and up range... ($5000 on the lower end as I recall)
And now, you can print in 3D ......... soooo cool.
So how would this work if you printed something for me? Not sure what yet, but I'm sure I could think of something that I've had in mind

Can you print a phone back?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 with XDA Premium
Awesome. One day I WILL have to buy/build a 3D printer, but they're still currently either way too expensive, or way too janky (MakerBot). And then one day a little further down the road: true desktop molecular manufacturing for everyone (nanotechnology).
In any case, here's something I'd definitely design and print for my phone if I had a 3D printer: End caps and/or snap-on housings for my right-angle 3.5mm stereo cable AND my right-angle micro USB cable. Why? Because I often have both plugged in and it's a pain to comfortably hold my phone in landscape mode while gaming with the nubs of each cable connector jamming into my hands. Would much rather have something with more surface area covering 'em. (KICKSTARTER?! $$$ )

if you give him the 3d geometry file he can print it providing the overhangs are not too bad or it may have to be done in multiple parts.

I would love a docking station for this beast.
which 3d printer did you get? I'm pricing a few out right now as well if anyone has any pointers...
I desperately want a 3D printer. So many ideas in this thick skull. lol
You should do the inductive charging mod for your phone with the Pre back cover and fabricate a car mount for the S3 with a slot to slide a touchstone into it.
Oh yeah, I'd want one. I'm hoping for something similar when Samsung eventually gets around to releasing their official inductive charging kit unlike the Verizon only one that Big Red just released.
That's a really nice docking station for the Moto btw.
Responses for all!

Well if it's something that I think sounds cool I would probably just make it and send you one for free- the material isn't exactly cheap but it's definitely not expensive, either. The design time sometimes takes a while (2-10 hours), though, depending what it is. But yeah just throw down some ideas.
I'm also up to do custom orders for relatively cheap (~$20/hr design time, $3 per ounce printed). You can see some stuff I've done here, here, and here.

After I hacked my bionic for wireless charging I tried designing part of a phone back (my first print + first design ever, so it looks terrible). Even now that I'm pretty good with the printer & designing things, I don't think it has quite the precision for the fine interlocking mechanism required for the phone back to snap to the phone.
Also, you can see the fine bead of the print so it doesn't look as smooth as china-factory-printed-plastic. (see photo from first post) - so it's better for docks and things like that.

The makerbot replicator has worked extremely well for me! ($1700). It will do 50+ prints without an issue, and until last week the only fixes I had to do were replacing the tape on the platform and cleaning out the extruder's motor. (last week the motherboard blew, but they immediately shipped me a new one free of charge, and now I'm running again).
OK so let me get this right - you have right angle cables and you'd like something to snap onto the phone to essentially cover both cables so it is
a) more comfortable to hold in landscape
b) protects the jacks from damage
is that about right? or do you want it to snap onto the cables themselves

Yes I can print most things, even if there's an overhang (it just requires wasting plastic to print support material). Creating a design is pretty easy in Google's (actually Trimble just bought it) free program Sketchup. You can send me the file or an STL exported from any other 3d modeling software.

I got the Makerbot Replicator for the customer support. With relatively premature technology, I think it's worth it to spend a few bucks extra to get awesome support. They answer requests on weekends and will replace any broken parts promptly & free of charge.
However, I would probably try out the Solidoodle, as it is super cheap and looks good. I do feel bad supporting the company as the founder used to work at Makerbot and literally just stole their business model.

Thanks man. You must have seen my other post where I hacked my phone previously for wireless charging?
Not really sure I see the value to it being wireless charging if it's gonna stay stationary in a navigation dock, though? Would it be for device flexibility (so I wouldn't have to redesign it when I get a new phone)?
I'd like a dock that accepts the phone in a case and also works in landscape
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Actually didnt know about your previous mod lol.
Was more or less just thinkin aloud (or in text i should say) about a type of of car dock Id like to see for this and future devices. Im a little tired of buying 2-3 new docks (home, car, office) everytime I get a new phone in all honesty.
Would love for a slim universal car dock with inductive charging. Cable can be pulled from the inductive charging pad/touchstone for devices that require being physically plugged in. Makes things simple. Just get in the car, put the device in the dock quickly without worrying about fumbling wires or which side is your port on etc. When you get out just grab the phone. no worrying about wires, bending the usb connector cause you pulled at a wierd angle etc. you know?
Just figured the touchstone + mod would be a nice cheap base to start with for concepting over a $100ish inductive pad. Maybe even stick a laminated rewritable nfc tag in the center with a nice logo on it to program for carmode/ nav/ music or whatever as soon as you dock it. Maybe even make the dock itself detachable and usable as a desktop dock aswell... Ok ok lemme pause my brain for a lil while. I can keep going on and on about this stuff... lol
I am a mechanical engineer and do alot of 3D work in solidworks. I can sketch things up in 3D if people have an idea.
Could the OP use solidworks or step files to automatically print these? I would really like it to design docks and stand if I know the gap margibs from this markerbot

I have an idea for a case for the sgh-i747. Just a simple 2 piece snap together case. Nothing fancy. Would be nice to see how that material holds up to some of the others I have.
I guess any clamshell style case would work as a template if you could do that and send it it to OP. I have looked for 3d dimensions for them and can't find anything for it.
Thank you
