Is there a way to update to the latest version 4 with unlocked bootloader? I dont really care if I loose the root or not. The last time I tried to switch to stock from my rooted .145 and update from the phone, my phone "brick" on me. Luckily there is a way to fix the problem.

No, I haven't. I have locked bootloader(yet). But read about it in some threads. Is this just an offer from me... Read the comments.
Ok finally after several research and try I find the following are the easiest method of getting root on the latest version (for people with unlock bootloader).
1. Flash using Flashtool any unrooted version 4 ROM
I used the following: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209237
2. Switch off your phone, and boot into fastboot mode. How? When the phone is off, hold the menu button and connect the USB cable to the PC.
3. Using fastboot command, flash the boot image created by Doomlord. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172885
4. Boot your phone, and enjoy the rooted ARC
Yes kuailan thats the same method I used. Its not just a rooted arc now, with setcpu app you can under/overclock it, and i dunno if any other addons.
Anyway, remind yourself and everyone that once its in that state, never do OTA update as doing that on a bootloader unlocked phone will result in bricked phone. Its recoverable, but requires additional effort. So there's the warning.
Hello folks, before you flame me for starting yet another R800x thread, hear me out (this situation is somewhat unique). I bought a Verizon Xperia Play off eBay just to fool around with (and I wanted an OnLive-capable phone with a gamepad).
I'm not a Verizon customer, so I use this phone as a wifi-only device. Fortunately, this means I don't care what happens to the CDMA radio if I flash something. This bootloader is also locked. I'm wondering if I can install custom ROMs meant for the R800i/R800a/R800at on my phone. Like I said earlier, it is OK if that breaks data, but I would still like wifi to work.
TL;DR Can I flash the latest and greatest GSM ROMs on my R800x if I don't care whether I get 3G data?
That's what I did, and it's awesome. Just look at my sig

Oh nice. It says there you have an unlocked bootloader though; will I need one? I know I will if I am to flash a kernel. Also, it says there that you have the DooMKernel v11. GSM kernels don't brick this CDMA phone?
You need to unlock to flash GSM firmwares, to flash the system.sin through fastboot. GSM does 'not' brick your phone, just renders data useless which isn't an issue here. The only other problem is no 720p recording in gingerbread (ICS worked!)

Couldn't I just flash one of the R800i FTFs using Flashtool, or is that not possible without an unlocked bootloader?
I'm not too concerned with video recording.
The FTF isn't compatible because of all the other things that are included in it. You need to only flash the system.sin and kernel.sin (this one is only if you don't use a custom kernel like DooMKerneL). They can be extracted like a .rar archive. I haven't tried telling flashtool to only flash those 2 things, and heck maybe it can, you can always try.

I tried, but it failed with a 'Failed to verify sin header' error. I used the 'Exclude baseband' option in Flashtool which pretty much flashes only loader, system, kernel, userdata and cache sin files. Mind you, my bootloader is locked.
Then if you can't flash it through flashtool, you gotta go through the bootloader. Sorry
If you do get around to unlocking the bootloader, here's the tutorial for installing the FW http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18549099&postcount=25
You have to unlock the bootloader for around $20 before you can use flashtool. Mine's unlocked.

just to clarify.
flashtool works on both locked bootloader and unlocked bootloader. however you can only flash official ftf designed for your phone model with locked bootloader. when unlocked you can essentially flash all ftf even non Sony ones except there are none.

I see, so it's the R800x flag that's stopping me from flashing an R800a/i FTF. Thanks. Time to spend that ~$20.

So I unlocked the bootloader and tried what you said above (without the CDMA Patch because the hosted file has been deleted (but I don't need data anyway)). Unfortunately, I get the same problem as TSBroich had here. I've tried with various combinations of two different kernels (DooMKernel for CDMA and the stock R900i 4.0.2.A.42 kernel.sin) flashed through fastboot, and three ROMs (4.0.2.A.42 system.sin flashed through fastboot, and Darkforest's GSM 3.1.0 and CDMA 3.0.5 zips flashed through the recovery that comes with DooMKernel). No luck; it either fails to boot or boots with just the notification bar showing.
ICX beta 3 sort of works, but reboots too often to be usable. Also, no touchpads.
Edit: Same notification bar-only problem with 4.0.2.A.62 as well.
Not sure if this will help or not.
I have a locked bootloader R800x and have found that most but not all sys.ui flash will result in success for stock vzw firmware. The best luck I have had is Gin2Ics theme. Wifi would work and it has quite a few other goodies that work. Add the Xperia S launcher and you have quite a nice little set up. I may go this rout once I retire my play. Hope this helps out.
Hey guys, big time reader, not so much of a poster, since I read a TON. I will start with background...
Galaky S2 custom kernel Cyg/nightly rom/rooted
Galaky S2 Skyrocket rooted
Acer Iconia A500 32gb rooted/custom kernel/rom
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10 rooted
So I know my way around. My questions are all relted to my Xperia AT&T ION LT28at (already rooted)
after reading many MANY pages on unlocking the bootloader, I am lost.
I went to the official Sony site and input mu Mime code minus the last digit, and I got an unlock code via email.
Here is my problems, i do not have an off brand sim card and when I try to use other guides with the ericson flasher program, i follow the steps.
1. Power down phone
2. Hold down volume - button while plugging in usb to pc
3. Hold down the fastboot button while plugging in usb to pc....this is the problem....
step3 wont work. the sony code site says the fastboot button is volume +, other sites say its volume + AND Power. No matter what I try, its not working at all. once it connected for a split second and showed the window with the mime (sp?) number greyed out with nothing there and a row below for my unlock key, but the phone disconnected.
So here are my questions....
1. What is the exact procedure to enter fast boot mode on Sony Xperia Ion LT28at as soon as I am done with step 2? Buttons to press, power down etc.
2. I really just want Cynogen (sp) mod rom, do I absolutely NEED an unlocked boot loader for this?
3. I want to enable "Portable WiFi Hotspot" so I can surf with my tablet. Is an unlocked bootloader REQUIRED for this?
4. I am lov9ng that the cynogen mod allows me to add more rows of icons to the home screen, which is one of my main reason for wanting a new rom, I guess this is part of question 2. Is an unlocked bootloader required?
5. Can anyone link me to a nice tutorial for these two things? Installing roms/list of roms on a locked bootloader xperia ion lt28at? As well as one for if I get this thing unlocked.
6. Finally I could really use a good explaination, be it video or baby step by baby step to get this phone into fastboot.
And while I am here, instead of making 4 more threads in 4 areas....
Is there an official (or unofficial) version of Jellybean for....
Galaxy S2 i777
Galaxy S2 Skyrocket i797 (i think)
Acer Iconia a500 32gb
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 10.1?
thanks in advance and I am very sorry for the dumb questions, I guess we all get stumpped sometimes. Afterall I did root 2 other phones and tablets with new roms and kernels.
thank you!
You have a LT28at.....you can not enter fastboot as the LT28at does not allow unlocked bootloader. You don't need another brand sim that is only for sim unlocking not bootloader unlocking.
to answer your questions:
1. you can't since it does not allow unlocked bootloader
2. yes cyanogen requires a custom kernel which you can only flash if you have an unlocked bootloader.
3. Flash the LT28i generic firmware and you can use tethering/wifi hotspot without issue. (just manually put in your apns)
4. See #2 or use a different launcher such as ADW or one of the many others.
5. Just look for the locked bootloader supported rom you want - instructions for installing it "should" be in its first post
6. See #1

Look at the stock firmware downloads thread. It has a guide for using flashtool which is what you use to flash the firmware. Or since you installed a recovery (cwm I presume) you can use one of the prerooted stock firmware. That thread is in the dev section.

Yea sucks about the boot loader deal. I am thinking about selling mine and find a Red H model of the Ion. PA on a Ion would be great and may still be kind of possible. I was recently running The Nexus rom for locked boot which was very smooth. In that thread it talks about per app dpi being possible with the xtheme that is installed. I have not tried it so cant say how well it would work. Xtheme also allows cm themes to be ported as well. Sure it would not be PA but it seems you could close with a bit of work.

Hi can anyone advise what the problem could be?
I have been trying to upgrade my Xperia play from Gingerbread to Jellybean and failed,
My handset is Bootloader unlock Status = No, although O2 unlocked the carrier so I could use any carrier.
So when I goto Sony bootloader unlock site the phone will not goto fastboot mode. Just says Waiting
When I open Fashtool I have successfully rooted the phone, but when I try to Flash the phone rather than go into Fastboot mode the just restarts.
I am using Windows 7 64bit.
Any help on getting this done is greatly appreciated

Does that mean bootloader is locked, so impossible to unlock?
The sticker on the back of the phone is W46. Read somewhere that using Flashtool may damage the phone.

SIM Unlocking the phone inst the same as Unlocking the Bootloader. If you Have Bootloader unlock Status = No you can still unlock your Bootloader via the Test Point method.
If you Unlock your phone with the Test Point method you will not have acces to Fastboot Mode, but you can still Flash Kernels via Flash Mode Using the FTF version of it(insted of a boot.img file).
Look in my signature if you want any FTF kernel.

As above, follow the guide above. Since you unlocked via the testpoint and there's no fastboot, you need to have your kernels in a .ftf file format.
Here's a thread with download links to ftf kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2739559
You will need to use flashtool to flash them. The JB ROM can then be flashed via recovery normally.
My Xperia PLAY was locked to O2 as well and testpoint unlocked, and these have been working fine for me so far... although for some reason my phone stopped working with ICS ROMs. GB and JB still works however.
Phone bricked.
I flashed the Lupus JB kernal and then entered recovery menu and deleted formatted and now it just a blank screen as if the phone is off yet plugging in the usb is recognised by computer yet flashtools and Sony companion can't repair or recognise.
Any ideas?
Grover
Exactly what did you delete/format under recovery? All I did was pick the factory reset option, then wiped cache and dalvik cache, and then flashed the ROM and worked fine for me. I'm using version 8 of the kernel however for the extra data space.
Here are the ftf files for the stock original Sony firmware, which you can use to restore your device if flashing goes wrong (.79 is the latest): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43935357&postcount=2
I formatted the file as you did and it came on with a blank lit screen so I flash the default file in firmware a on flash tools to get nothing but a blank dead screen
Any help is greatly appreciated
Grover
1) Download the .79 ftf firmware and place it in Flashtool's firmware folder.
2) Open up flashtool, and plug in the Xperia PLAY in flash mode (hold back button while plugging in USB). Flashtool should report the device is in flash mode.
3) Press the flash button (lightning symbol) and select the stock .79 firmware, then confirm to flash that.
4) Wait for it to finish flashing. Flashtool will then ask you to reboot the device.
5) Unplug the phone and hold the power button until it vibrates. Let go and it should boot back into the stock Xperia software.
It should now be back to stock, and you can attempt to try custom ROMs and kernels again.
Unfortunately this is where the problem lies. Flash tools doesn't recognise that the phone is there hence can't flash it with stock firmware.
It is In a dead state. Is there anyone who offers a service to Unbrick it and what tools are required?
I am not dettered by having bricked my phone, as this is all part of my learning, although I would appreciated a possible fix to Unbrick it.
Thanks in advance
Grover

Yes, if you unlocked your Bootloader via the test point method for the R800x and the R800i you should have access to Fast Boot Mode. You only don't get access to Fast Boot Mode if you have "Bootloader unlock status: No"(and unlocked via the Test Point Method), witch is about 100% of R800a users.
As above. Sadly, all phones sold from O2 UK have bootloader unlock as no, so the normal way of unlocking won't work and only the tespoint method is avaliable... So no fastboot. Due to that, I buy my phones unlocked and unbranded now. Luckily thanks to the great developers on here we can still root and play around with custom ROMs.
What version of Windows are you using Grover? I'm not sure if it's related but I have problems with adb/fastboot drivers on Windows 8/8.1 with HTC devices. Everything works perfectly on 7 though.
Evening XDA,
I have recently got this phone but unfortunately it has a locked bootloader.
Are there any ROMs I can install on locked bootloader? E.g. stock based.
How can I tell if a ROM is safe to flash?
I'm pretty sure that you can only flash ROMS through a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP) and to be able to get in your recovery you need boot loader unlocked. Unlocking it and getting a custom recovery isn't hard though and it comes with bonuses like making nandroids?. And regarding the safety of ROMs I recommend downloading from places that look official. Just Google what ROMs there are for your phone and choose what sounds best (cyanogenmod is pretty good?)

That's wrong, you don't need to unlock bootloader in order to install a custom recovery. Rooting the phone is enough. Then the correct install file from Nut's database and you have more than one recovery.
"Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.7.XXX-BETA.installer.zip (XX.XXMB)" would be your choice after rooting. More information HERE.

To answer you previous question. You can flash any ROM that uses the stock kernel to run. Most of them are labeled stock based or based on stock firmware XYZ.
And as long as you have a recovery and made a backup beforehand, almost every ROM is safe to flash.

Can you set CWM to warn when a ROM tries to write boot image? Cause that would be ideal for people with locked bootloaders.
You can just check if there's a boot.img in the zip file I guess. Anyway, it'll simply fail and you have to restore an official rom, no big deal. There aren't many stock based roms anyway.
