[Q] MHL Cuts out - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey! so i got mhl hdmi connector to plug my phone into my tv, yes its the 15 pin one for the gs3, and it works but will randomly cut out for a second at a time, like the sound and video will stop on my tv, but will continue on the phone. anyone else having this issue?

Does anyone know whether this is because its not a oem samsung adapter?

Sounds like the connector is not sustaining good contact. Or maybe the device is faulty?
I have the official MHL one and have no issues other than needing to power cycle some older TVs to achieve the proper hand shaking.

hmmm yeah i got my money back from the seller on ebay, maybe i should just spend the extra cash and get the official one

Received HDTV Adapter from Verizon for Wifi Tab

Received HDTV Adapter from Verizon for Wifi Tab. Ordered from Verizon retail store last week and received today. Working as expected, mirroring everything. Takes standard HDMI cable. Need to connect traveler charger which came with gtab on one side of HDTV adapter to start display on TV or Monitor. Videos seems better than Gtab 7 with hdmi dock but picture is little bit cutting on the TV display. Tried all settings on TV but cant't fix it. I have US retail Rom on it. Adding some pics of the Adapter.
hey bro. Can you post a link to where you found that adapter. I can't find it anywhere e

I was hoping you wouldn't need to plug in the charger to be able to use the adapter as it makes the use of it a lot more inconvenient. I'm seriously dissappointed. Bad Samsung! Bad!
hey task650 i was unable to shop it via websites that's why i went to Verizon store in NY and the salesman ordered for me in the store and gave me receipt and told me it will ship via FedEx and the shipping is free. It's a 2 day delivery time because i ordered it on Thursday last week and received it on Monday. You can check maybe they have it in Verizon store now. CazeW yes the charger should be plugged into HDTV adapter in order to display on TV. First it seems inconvenient but then i thought for GTab 7 i need to plug the whole dock to display on TV. But i also want adapter to be used without charger.

This seems to be standard practice for MHL output. Every MHL device I've seen had the same requirement.

But it still feels kinda silly that the chip can't draw its power from the tab as I doubt it really needs that much juice.
That's why the 7" Galaxy Tab dock is a better buy as it has hdmi and a stand.
hi
is the gtab charging while the wallplug is attached to the hdmi out?
The need to plug in a charger to get HDMI out is just, for the lack of a better word, stupid.
At home I may have my setup with a dock and HDMI connector. But I want to be able to quickly connect the tablet to a TV, beamer or stereo when im on the go and not search for a wall outlet or even carry my charger with me just to show a few pictures or a movie.
Are you still on stock 3.1 have you flashed one of the TW ROMs? I hope this can be changed via an update because this requirement would make the HDMI adapter almost useless for me.
Edit: I just saw the picture of the manual. It seens I have to wait for an aftermarket solution or don't buy an HDMI adapter at all.
Yes the gtab charges while wallplug is attached to hdmi out. Now i am on original TW from samsung and still needs charger to display on TV.
I'm thinking of buying a small external battery to plug in when I want to use the HDMI adapter. Anyone tried if that works?
so I just went to a verizon store and they couldn't order it for me. But I am passing one more so I am bringing my tab in and showing them your picture as proof to have them try harder .
::edit::
Ok and that just worked lol they ordered it for me after looking at your picture like oh damn now I can't say no
That's good you did that. Most of their staff did not knew when i was asking about the adapter and they were showing me all sorts of hdtv stuff and finally one store able to help me out. So they charge you $39.99 plus tax right? Shipping is free.
Cazew good idea but i never thought of that so never used that configuration. But you will need strong battery right? Because i bought external battery for the iPad and the iPad never charges from the external battery maybe because power was not strong enough on the battery. Battery power capacity is 1900 mAH, Input : 5V 800mA, Output : 5V 500mA.

yea 39.99 plus tax with free 2 day shipping. I wonder if I ordered it with the other accessories I got recently if I would have gotten a discount on it like I did on them (thunderbolt case and dock charger)

To charge the Tab (and iPad) the external battery has to have an output of 2A at 5V (or get one of those charging cables from Ebay). I'm suspecting though that to use the HDMI adapter with an external battery you don't need that kind of output. If you still have that battery, would be great if you could test if it works with the adapter.
Thanks foe the information. Will stop by Verizon and order.
Anybody with the adapter notice any slowdown once mirroring? I'm getting some lag (in all apps) and white speckles (noise) on the tv screen (but not on the tab). Running latest rooted tw.

Not sure what MHL is but the Motorola Xoom's built-in HDMI miniconnector connects directly to a TV without the need of an external power source. Why couldn't they have made the Tab do this also?

Here's a list to get the adapter for a better price than Samsung.
I just placed an order at:

I'll let you guys know how it went when I receive my adapter.

HDMI Adapter Problems/Flickering Output

Hi
I just recieved my Adapter but something seems to be faulty on this,
when I connect it with several HDMI cables the mirrored picture starts to jitter or the connection break for a few seconds.
The cables are not decoupled and not really expensive, I have no other HDMI device to test them but I dont think that they are buggy.
The TV connected to is a Philips PFL8404
Some suggestions what I'm doing wrong?
The GT is rooted and on stock ROM.
Greets Nighty
i have the same issue. i tried two different hdmi cables and two different hdtvs and the issue is still happening. at this point i think its a defective adapter. Im gonna exhange it.
I had a similar issue back when I had a Xoom (which I ended up returning cause of weight). I am debating over ordering the adapter for my Tab, and if they are doing this, too, then I'd be fairly dissapointing. I always figured maybe the Xoom had a loose connection or the cable sucked, but maybe it's something else?
Got my HDMI adapter for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday also. It flickers and looses connection so much it useless. I've tried several new HDMI cables, and 3 different TVs. All flicker and blink. I'm sure it's a bad adapter. Will be returned shortly.
i would like to see someone post positive things about the hdmi adapter, have been thinking about getting one, but so far all these posts make me believe that its now worth it?
thanks
recieved a second adapter and still the same, seems to be a problem with the GT itselve or with some drivers build in, may the root crashed something, will trx out.
just ttryed another 40 bucks cable and still the same, dont think thats a hardware fault by the adapter. The only thing I can test now is to unroot to stock. Will test later and update.
UPDATE: Unrooting doesnt work
it doesnt seem like the people with the verizon hdmi adapter are having this issue. I wonder if its made differently?
I just received my adapter from Verizon and I can confirm the same issues so its not related to where you buy it.
Anyone notice what the status of their battery life is when using the adapter? Mine glitched the first time I tested it out and I had just taken the Tab off the charger. I kept getting a notification to unplug the Tab because it had reached 100% charge, which I haven't seen before. When I tried it later in the day it wasn't fully charged and it seemed fine. I haven't had a chance to try it longer than 10 minutes yet so not sure if its battery charging related. I know it doesn't work without a power supply so maybe once the Tabs at 100% it rejects power and cuts the HDMI off. Just a thought, I may be wrong.
I just tried it with 30% battery life and still having the same issue. does anyone have one that works?
Yeah I tried watching a movie on mine last night with about 70% battery and it switched from TV to Tab then back to TV about every 5 minutes.
I don't have an HDMI out cable, but I was wondering if you guys were plugging the charger into the HDMI, or if you were using it without it. I'm curious because I saw a review about it stating they needed the Charger to be plugged into the HDMI to get it to work.

yhea thats right you have to plug the wall charger in otherwhise it wont display anything at all, our problem is the faulty result whats on the screen
Wow. I was just about to order the HDMI adapter from Sammy (I stubbornly kept waiting for BestBuy or Verizon to get one in stock). But seeing all these problems, I wonder if they're having quality or other issues, and hence why it's not hitting shelves yet.
Does anyone have a feel for whether all seem to be defective, or if these posts are more representative of the adapters that are defective? (guessing from those saying they've tried more than one, that there seems to be a general problem with the adapters).
Okay I have a 10.1 galaxy tab wifi and a home made dock from a 7 inch tab and 10 inch tab dock. Using the oem power adapter that came with my tab. With my hdmi dock I watched a movie on amazon instant via the browser And I rented a movie from google. Both movies played perfectly through my 50 inch plasma tv via the hdmi dock.. I can tell you that movies would not play from google untell touchwiz update. but after the update I have had no problems whatsoever playing any content via hdmi. Also I don't know if it makes any difference but I have never rooted my tab. Good luck guys I don't know what's going on I hope you figure it out.
Hey mopar. Is your tv a 1080p? Both my hdtvs are 1080i so im wondering if thats causing the issue. I think i read somewhere that this tab outputs in 1080p. I dont think its the video player because it cuts in and out without running any programs. Its like every 30 seconds the tv screen will cut out go black and then come back on. its basically useless.
I believe my tv is the lower of the 2 not sure though.... it's definitely not a high end tv but it is new..w
my tv is a 1080p
I just got the adapter today and haven't had any problems with it so far
I just got the 7 " docking with HDMI out and it works like a charm, so it seems to be a production problem with the adapters. Brought me the 10.1 dock to put the piece on the 7 " base.

MHL/HDMI Out Works!!

Just thought that this feature has been ignored by websites and even Samsung. Seeing the specs list, I concluded that HDMI out was not supported by Galaxy Nexus.
Then I stumbled upon Modaco, and in their review they did mention this functionality.
I bought a cheap knock off MHL cable from the market, and viola! It works perfectly. I am just curious as to why this feature was not announced and anyone failed to cover it.

I agree with you that most websites have neglected to mention this function but it is pretty standard on new device releases now and in the Galaxy Nexus quick start guide it has a diagram of the phone with an arrow to the charging port the says Multifunction Jack. How is the quality of the picture?

Picture quality is superb.
One disadvantage is that the phone loses PORTRAIT mode while connected. The launcher becomes a landscape which is quite attractive. But full-screen portrait games run at a 90 degree angle.

I'm using a samsung gs2 one, you really get to see how high res the ui really is. The only thing is the density, It would be awesome if there was a "non root" way to put it into tablet mode.
Its even better with a bluetooth mouse connected
i got one of the cheap ones of ebay for mine and the pictures perfect on full HD stuff!
One problem i am having though is that now and then the screen will go black and loose sound for a second, it can happen a few times a minute or not at all for 5 mins or so but it keeps happening. Anyone else experiencing this?
I've not had chance to test on another TV yet to see if its something on there effecting it or if its the fact i got the cheapo MHL and not the Samsung one.
I did not experience it, but I hardly tried it for a few minutes.
The 'cheapo' cable I bought still ended up costing around 30 USD, so its cheap only by comparison. I strongly believe that it should be coming free inside the box since the functionality is there in the handset.
A few years ago those Nokia sets came with the TV out cable in the box. These phones cost almost twice that and yet.... There is a worrying trend to charge for peripherals - we already see wafer thin batteries in phones and then manufacturers rolling out expensive extended batteries. Next thing we know, they will be charging for chargers and headphones too.
Also would it kill Sammy if they'd just used a simple Micro-to-full HDMI cable without this MHL BS. it is a messy set up resulting in an explosion of cables under your telly, and since three sockets are involved, unreliable too.
Moto uses just a simple micro HDMI port in their sets. How hard can that be for Sammy or HTC to implement?
I brought my cheapo one for £6 on eBay, very good picture and sound, had no blackouts yet.
Hi can you share link and photo of the mhl cable that you bought?
Thanks.

Welcome to nexus. Lol. What's wrong with mhl? Micro hdmi port has its limitations too but it does have the advantage of simple mirroring without extra power being needed. Other than that advantage a messy explosion of cables is still needed to do anything serious.

1 vs 3 cables. Its all about practicality - it's irritating for me because in these days of batteries lasting barely one day, the charger is usually in the bedroom for overnight charging.
Although I did find a workaround - MicroUSB cable off the TV's USB port takes care of the charging side of MHL quite nicely . Clever me.
Also, MHL seems to be a mixed blessing for portrait apps. In HDMI mirroring the display at least switches to portrait when there is a full screen portrait game running. No such luck here. My Flick Golf looks like Angry Birds with MHL!

Completely unrelated: If someone could hack this into Android x86 as a feature, I would install it on my netbook in an instant.
I bought some random $12 MHL adaptor on eBay and while it works the reliablity isn't very great. When I plug my GN in sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it works instantly. Sometimes it works perfectly fine sometime it changes between analog looking static and black intermittently. If you're going to buy one I think you should just buy it retail as buying 2 on eBay (Assuming you get a bad one the first time like I seem to have) it will cost you the same as getting it retail.

what is the HDMI out on the gnexus like, is it basically HDMI mirroring, or are you taken into some mode (like the atrix's webtop)
does it fill the screen at 1920x1080 if i wanted to stream netflix for example or a HD video from the android market

Are you experiencing the phone losing battery even though it is charging? e.g. it kills more power than the USB can provide? Has anyone tried the monoprice cable with regards to this? Thanks guys.
Does using an MHL to HDMI adapter use any additional resources (RAM/CPU/GPU/etc)? I'd imagine it does since it mirrors, outputting to two sources at once (screen on the GN and the output jack). I ask this because the reason I bought one, well 90% of the reason anyway, was to use it for PSX and N64 emulators with a PS3 dual shock controller. I know those put a strain on the system in and of themselves, but it seems like they work even less well when using the MHL to HDMI adapter. There is pretty bad lag with some games, but others are okay (Mario Kart 64 was pretty bad, while F-Zero X seemed to be perfect). PSX is the same way, Intelligent Qube works well but Metal Gear Solid is almost unplayable. But when I don't use the adapter and just play it on the phone it's not as bad. The audio is choppy sometimes but game play is still smooth. Not so much the case when using the adapter...
No lag when using SNES emulator, so it's probably just the added resources needed for the more advanced emulators. Still, kind of baffling that its mostly fine without the adapter and not so fine with it.

Lapdock 100 External Monitor Problems

I recently purchased a lapdock 100 with the intention of using it as a monitor. I bought the female micro hdmi to hdmi adapter and the female to female hdmi adapter. From what I understand after this it should be plug and play, but it's not getting detected by any devices. Any help? Did I overlook a power button or something?
I believe there's some power logic inside the Lapdock that might be getting in the way. I'm not sure what you're trying to hook it up to, but this article on hooking a Raspberry Pi to a Lapdock 100 might help: http://rpidock.blogspot.com/2012/05/raspberry-pi-and-motorola-lapdock.html

Thanks for replying.
I got some more symptoms of my issue. I plugged it into my hdmi port on my desktop (Before I used my tablet and it didn't detect it) and my computer detects it, it's just the lapdock that doesn't want to turn on. However, occasionally I might see a red flash on the led, when this happens and I press the button, the display turns on! Unfortunately it only lasts for about 10 seconds before shutting off again, and from there I have to wait until the led decides to flash red once again to get 10 seconds more of screentime.
I decided to try something else. I got my micro hdmi female to micro hdmi male cable in the mail today. When I plug my phone into the usb port, the laptop automatically turns on. Unfortunately the display turns off still after about 10 seconds. If I close the lapdock and reopen it the screen will come on once again. So now I can actually decide when I can turn it on, but it's useless due to how long it lasts.
Do you think I just happened to get a bad laptop? I ordered it online at AT&T, I'm not sure if they even have an extra to replace for me, and I don't think Motorola does either.

The prevailing conclusion seems to be that Motorola has included some authentication logic in the newer Lapdocks to prevent exactly this. The old Atrix Lapdocks seem to work just fine as dumb HDMI displays, though. Rather a **** move from them, seeing as how they discontinued the program and my expensive Lapdock is currently a paperweight.

Seems like you're right. Since I missed my AT&T return window by one day I had to send it to Motorola because I thought there was an issue with it. Well I finally got it back today and it's the same lapdock, apparently nothing was wrong with it. Seems like I wasted $50
I got it working!
Looks like you need the usb part connected too. I had a female micro usb to male usb plugged into my phone from the start of all this but it didn't work, but I decided to spend $2 on a micro usb to usb converter and plugged it into my computer. The trackpad and keyboard works on my computer and the screen doesn't shut off after a couple of seconds!
Here's what I ordered (Mine came with a chunk of the plastic melted and scratched, so I'd recommend avoiding the retailer "likeelectronic Ship FM Hongkong")

[Q] Official MHL Adapter will not work properly. Possible phone defect?

Hello all, and thanks in advanced for anyone who can help me out,
I have a launch day Galaxy S3 that will not properly connect to the official Samsung MHL Adapter. (PN: EPL-3FHUBE)
The problem is that the longer MHL plug will not fit all the way into the phone and kind of falls out. Its not going deep enough for the micro usb pins to catch inside the phone and take hold.
If i hold it tightly by hand it will display a picture on my TV, no problems at all. As soon as i let go, it disconnects.
I'm thinking this may be a defect on first gen GS3's as my brother also has a launch day GS3 and has the same issue.
Ive tested on 4 more GS3's (The entire family is on them) that were purchased 6 months after the initial release and the MHL plug fits all the way in. They all display a flawless picture and the connection feels very sturdy.
Looking at the two launch GS3's, inside the Micro USB port on the bottom of the phone it looks as if there is a plastic block above the pins keeping the adapter from going all the way in. The later models dont have it...
I'd really like to get this working. Ive planned to use the Pioneer App radio 2 with it and its been a long road. almost there but this seems like a make or break road block....
Does it sound like I need a phone replacement? Would this feature loss warrant a claim on my phones insurance?
