Preface: I've asked about how to disable capacitive backlights on stock TW ROMs, and now I independently found half of the answer.
By looking inside EpicParts.apk from CM-based ROMs, I obtained the position of soft key "device": /sys/devices/virtual/sec/t_key , and by modding the file "brightness" under it, capacitive key backlight turn off.
However, on TW ROMs this never persists no matter how I set the permission / owner, while on Incredible S, after modding I can mod the permission to r--r----- to prevent system from reverting this setting.
Plus, on pre-CM10 era ROMs, "Epic 4G Settings" is there but even if I disable the backlight, it always light on for a wee second every time I unlock, which is pretty annoying as I use onscreen keys heavily.
Digging further into CM10's EpicParts (which can totally turn backlight off, regardless of unlock), it seems that it creates two files under the folder, "touchleds_disable" and "touchleds_voltage", but I don't know how this behaves, nor can I imitate the behaviour.
So... it'll be appreciated if anyone can explain to me how EpicParts (of JB) works and how I can reproduce its effects. Thanks all

I don't really have an answer to your question but I have a question for you lol. What you did disabled the lights completely? Like even the little flash they give when they are pressed on? They're just completely off?

Yes, that's the effect I'm looking for, and by now only CM10 and PA 2.5+ can do that; however, if I choose to disable them completely, the "Recent Apps" view will automatically pop up randomly, and I dunno why

I've tried Google without any luck..so I'm guessing this is a no..but I'm trying to find an app that disables tilt in certain situations only. I know I can disable tilt thru the settings..but that disables tilt EVERYWHERE. I'm just looking to disable tilt on my homescreen..while still being able to tilt while browsing Interwebz and whatnot. Seems like it should be an easy enough function..considering BB's have an app for it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok 1 - Android is not BlackBerry. Not even on the same level as one another, so just get that out of your head.
Second off, wtf do you mean on your homescreen? Sense doesn't turn landscape unless you changed the Skin to one built with landscape. Just switch it to the stock HTC skin, problem solved, it never goes landscape unless you open the keyboard.
If you're not using Sense (CM 6.1 or something) check the settings, as it usually has a way to disable homescreen rotation in their own personal settings.
Try CM6. It has the option for a custom power control widget to be embedded into the statusbar. You can put a toggle for rotation too. You loose the sense home and widgets though, but imo stock > sense. Or you could try quickdesk and put a rotation toggle widget on it.

Orly? Android isn't Blackberry? Good to know.
So lets begin...in order to "hide" all the bunk apps because I wasn't rooted, flashed, s-offed etc yet (all the things necessary to remove said apps) I had to download Launcher Pro (which was highly recommended). As soon as this was done..then yes..I was no longer able to use stock Sense. So now..my homescreen always tilts on me..which bugs the **** outta me. Could I just go back to stock Sense? Sure I could..but I'd rather have what should be a basic app to allow me to pick and choose where and when I'd like my screen to tilt. And I've grown to like how my homescreen looks over the stock look. Yes..I can disable autotilt in the settings..but then I can't even tilt the screen into landscape for the browser. So maybe I'm missing something here that someone else can point out..

I am on a stock ROM myself still, but I know that Cyanogen has a lot of customisation options. I wonder if it's worth asking in the CM thread over on the G2 side (because the DZ one is dead) out whether that has options that might help you ?
You want to disable "rotation" all over your phone AND to be able to use the browser in Landscape mode.
If that is the only thing you want, you can set your browser to "landscape mode only"
Now if you have a longer list of requirements on what apps get permisions to rotate the screen etc, I think you may bigger problems

there was nothing offensive or said with an attitude in this post. it was only til you noobs came on here with misplaced android pride. he didnt compare berrys to droids. he simply said they have an app for it.
this is a great question. the tilt function seems almost too sensitive. it would be great to maybe tweak it somehow to make it so you really have to hold the phone sideways....instead of slightly tilt the phone. an app to block it in certain situations is good but i feel that id have to micro manage too much to specify every single situaiton id want tilt or not.
for the record... i'm am a die hard android user and his post did not push my buttons at all. this post is very useful.
ADW launcher has an option in system preferences for home screen orientation.
Just change it from auto to portrait, that's what I did.

Wow no one answered your question. Well here it is, when you are on the home screen hit the Menu - Behavior Settings and uncheck Enable Auto-Rotation.
That will disable auto rotation on the home screen. Now go into Settings - Display and make sure Auto-rotate screen is checked. This way you will be able to but your screen into landscape mode when surfing the web or using apps that auto rotate. Now if you want to be able to choose specific apps, that I have no knowledge of doing. Hope this helps.

Tasker (on the Market) can be set up to enable/disable auto-rotation on many different triggers, like when a certain app is launched. Plus it can do a lot more that that! Check it out I think it's well worth the money.

Glad I could help. I know I was having the same issue at one point in time and it was very annoying. I didn't want to give up on Launcher Pro because the widgets are awesome and it gave me "sense" on my stock android! If you haven't played with Launcher Pro Plus, you should give it a whirl. The widgets that are unlocked with it are definitely top notch.

Not only those but what about the Friendstream widget? It is damn near an exact replica of the sense widget. I also like how when you use the picture frame widget, you can resize it. That feature is only available on LPP not LP.

Some time ago, there was a thread about how to disable the soft keys and keyboard lights. I read a lot of ebooks at night and it would be wonderful if there was some way to toggle those on and off. I'm not that knowledgeable about scripting and the like, that thread was beyond me. Is there an easy way to do this?
Another minor issue the CleanGB 1.12 lock screen. Great rom overall, very stable, but I have some trouble with the right to left swipe of the standard lock. Is there some way to change this to the upward swipe method?
Thanks for your help, I always feel a little out of my depth with significant modifications.

Don't know about the lights but the lockscreen is right in the OP. He gave people the choice of lockscreens.

Yeah he has a Touchwiz flashable lockscreen in the OP. As for the lights best solution is 2 words....black tape. I had heard some ROMs I think CM7 had linked those lights to the keyboard timeout.

CM developer mkasick has looked into it, and thinks it might be kernel related. But even he isnt sure so we're all doomed for sure rofl
I am Z.
First off I was looking at rooms and noticed there are no Android 4.0 roms??? That are stable?
Aosp roms? Or tw 4.0?
We have both roms. And both do have bugs
Before you ask search
Like he said we do have 4.0.3. Check the development thread to see what's out there. The closest to stable is raverx black edition which is touch wiz based but you can always use apex launcher if you want an asop experience. Raver also has asop almost completed but alas the ics roms we do have out are a bit buggy but some can be daily drivers. Either way, nandroid backup and try em out till you find what's good for you cheers!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
i'm running ics megamix with apex launcher and it's been pretty stable.
raver's black edition had a lot fcs for me and really wasn't good enough for dd.
and racing's was good, but i only ran the original (with the reboot/shutdown bug).
but as far as i can tell, they really are all about the same, just with different levels of debloating (which raver's has the least bloat, but i think that led to some of the instability i encountered) and some different bootanimations/theme tweaks.
the main bugs are autorotate is broken and some people have call echo, but i haven't experienced call echo on any that i've ran.
There is a stock rom ported from at & ts sgs2 ics update. That's as close as you get to official for us. There's only one bug the rotation is whack and it's full of atts bloat other then that it's good.

the most common i've seen is called bln, stands for backlight notification (i'm pretty sure there are others, too, but i'm not familiar with them). you need a compatible kernel, though, and so i don't think any of the ics can support it yet.

The kernel in the ROM must support BLN for it to work. There is another app on the market that will work on any ROM. It is called NoLED. It does not use the capacitive buttons but will show a light or if configured an icon on your screen even when screen is off for any apps you choose for it to manage. it will use separate icons for phone, sms, etc... so you know what you missed instead of just the lights like with BLN.
Greetings all. This is actually a question that does not require a specific answer but rather your personal opinion.
1.) In the ICS Ports for your EVO 4G, do you think the Soft-buttons docked at the bottom of the screen (Home, menu, back) are redundant considering the phone already has these buttons (Home, Menu, Back, Search) on a dedicated space right below the screen?
To me it's as if we are wasting a good peace of screen real estate having these buttons overlaying everything once more since we already have the space phsyically set apart for them. I sometimes hit the dedicated 'buttons' on accident when my fingers are wondering in the lower screen area in certain apps, I can imagine that this would happen even more so with the second set of soft buttons.
I've stayed with CM7 (7.2 RC0) because of this...
Thanks
-RM
totally agree with you bro, just a waste of our evo space
Most if not all ics roms have the on-screen navigation bar either disabled or optional in settings, so I'm not sure what your complaint is. If you don't want them turn them off, or use a rom with them removed

Howdy, gentlemen (and gentleladies) I have quite a few questions regarding the note 2. I know my way around android, these are about the device itself. As questions are answered, I will update the OP with the solutions / answers for reference, so others might learn from my ignorance
I bought a flip cover case, not the genuine samsung case, but one off ebay. It doesnt have an indentation for the home button so it is constantly being turned on. Is there a fix, preferably without rooting, for this? Maybe using the proximity sensor?
With the same flip case, I would like to know if it is at all possible to have the devices screen automatically turn on when it is opened, and turn off when it is shut? (Think "iPad with its magnetic cover") Possibly through the use of NFC tags or proximity sensor? The proximity sensor would have obvious issues with other things interfering. SOLUTION FOUND: DOWNLOAD "SIMPLE COVER LOCK" FROM PLAY STORE.
Are there mods that allow selecting something using the S-Pen's button, while it is in the air? Maybe using it to highlight text while in the air or click the button to register an input? I do a lot of copy and pasting and a feature like this can greatly improve productivity.
Is it possible to get the S-Pen to be able to push the soft keys? I absolutely hate having to continually change my hand posture whenever I need to access the back key or open a menu. Maybe, building on my previous question, have some sort of air gesture with the S-Pen button depressed that performs the actions of the soft buttons? WORK-AROUND, NO TRUE SOLUTION YET: GESTURE < AND ^ WITH S-PEN BUTTON DEPRESSED FOR BACK AND MENU ACTIONS, RESPECTIVELY
My last question is simple. Is the LED indicator an RGB LED? Like the one on the galaxy nexus that can be changed to any color? It would be cool to have different notification colors per app, blue for facebook, green for messaging and so on. ANSWER: YES
I appreciate the help, normally I would use my Google-fu but I much prefer answers from other users.

I can somewhat answer the first question. There are apps that allow you to use the proximity sensor to turn off and on the screen. A couple that I've personally tried are Intellicover and Auto Screen on. There's also Screen Lock and Off that allows you to turn off your screen by tapping a button. These work well, but if your flip cover is constantly bumping the home button, using these apps won't do anything different as your home button will still get bumped and then the screen will constantly turn on.
the best app to use for turning on the screen automatically is "simple cover lock" its a small free app that does just what it says it was created for the note 2 and does what it needs to really good
For the menu & back button question, hold the button on your s pen & draw a < on the screen to go back & a ^ for the menu
Edit: Also, Light Flow from the play store let's you control the LED lights

Thanks, seems to work fine for a beta, although it does show my homescreen for a second after the flip cover opens before going to the lock screen, even if it was already on the lockscreen when I shut it. I've never seen that happen with any lockscreen alternative, must be a bug. also, it gets kind of annoying if I accidentally move my hand over the proximity sensor and it shuts the display off, but the note is so big that this occurs rarely. Nonetheless, thanks

to fix the screen turning off when you move your hand over you would need to change the "turn off screen after" time to 5 so it would take longer to turn off when you closed the cover, i dont have the lockscreen bug on my rooted note 2 running a 4.1.2 samsung rom
I see, ill do that! I dont plan on rooting anytime soon, so I guess I have to live with it.
