I've had this happen a few time where the system volume slider becomes unavailable no matter what sound mode the phone is in. It seems the only way to rectify the situation is by restarting the phone. Has anyone else seen this?
FYI, this is the volume that lets you hear the locking and unlocking of the phone if that helps.

have i got the volume bug if my phone hangs and then reboots every time i touch volume up or down when the screen is on? Samsung insist that its the same thing and i need to wait for the update but i can't see anyone else describing that the problem causes a reboot, and my volume has never actually turned down on it's own as far as i can tell.
That sounds different altogether.

Thats what i suspect. Its just a pain to have been waiting for 4 days for something that probably wont fix anything and then to have to start the whole thing over again with samsung. O well

Deal with the retailer you bought the phone from, and get a replacement from them.

I'll give it a go. Im guessing they wont do a doorstep swap like i'd get from t mobile though. Hopefully i wont be without it for long. In our short time together i've grown quite attached to this phone (and almost got used to not touching the volume button)
Couple of questions (you may have already done these -apologies if you have)
Have you tried a factory reset? If not, maybe worth trying it, could be an app doing wierd things.
Also, try running a logcat trace when replicating the issue - see if it helps point in the direction of the issue.
Does the phone still crash when you're in the bootloader? (This _may_ help to rule out application related issues)
I have tried a factory reset. Weird thing is that im pretty sure that it didnt do it for the first few hours that i was playing with it. It was just at the point that i had it all set up that i first noticed it so assumed it was a rouge app and did a factory reset. When it rebooted i signed in and hit volume and it crashed so its definately not an app.
I almost believed that it was the normal volume bug because if i go somewhere more remote in the house, away from all electrical stuff, i can hammer at the buttons for a while before it crashes so maybe ive just got a more extreme version of the bug. Just noone else seems to have anything close. Volume control works fine in a call and when the screen is off but i havent tried in bootloader yet. I'll give it a go
Hey, i'm new to the forms so i just though i'd give you a background on my problem. Basically at random times when i try to turn up or down the volume the phone won't let me. Its almost like volume is disabled. I thought it could be an app or the recent firmware update but it seems like that ins't the problem. The only way i can get my volume to work is by rebooting my phone. Then i can adjust the volume for a few hours, until it happens again. I've had this problem for about a week now and its extremely annoying. I apologize if this is not in the correct category.
The attached imaged is what it looks like when i cannot adjust my volume.
Same Problem Here
I have the exact same problem. It's very annoying as I pretty much have to restart my phone at least once a day just for some volume.
I've had it happen randomly too. Only solution I've seen is a reboot

What roms are you guys using? I see its not stock so if you all have the same one its probably the rom causing the problem.
Odin back to stock snd see if it still happens.

This problem appears more than once
Please who has the idea helps us
It's a known problem. We just have to wait for Sony to correct this in a future update.
Yes its a known problem.. Haven't got any solution as yet...

This bug is super annoying. I wish there was ANY way to fix it. No matter what rom I install, if it's based on stock jellybean, the volume up eventually dies after a few times. This is such a massive issue for anyone who listens to music.
Why doesn't anyone press volume down and set it by touching the bar on the screen?
You don't have to reboot or anything.
Is there Rom in the site developers do not exist by this problem or dissolved therein

Yeah, because a reboot is easier!
OK this problem has been bugging me. Its started a few weeks back and i thought when i updated to 4.3 it would go away. But no luck.
Here is the problem. I have a Samsung S3 SGH I747M on Rogers was on 4.1.2 stock rom rooted. Now im on 4.3 stock rom rooted.
My phone keeps changing the notification/ all volumes on it own to very low. I can hardly hear it. I reboot my phone and its back to normal and all volumes are were i set them. Now i did notice that when it does go very low all my volume sliders go to the max position but everything will be very low.
Its driving me crazy. I have uninstalled several apps that i thought might be causing the problem but nothing seems to fix it. My next step is to do a factory reset. Which i really don't want to do as i have my phone set up the way i like it.
I'm hoping some of you phone gurus out there can help me find this annoyance.
Thanks.
Wow. No reply's. I guess nobody has had this problem before. Ill keep looking.
My volume dips occasionally, but I'm on pacman Rom with viper4android installed. In my case it happens when viper decides to randomly crash.

Did you have any audio mods installed ? If so then that might have caused the problem because to fully uninstall those you have to remove some of their system files or if they changed your build.prop you might have to undo the changes.
Other than that im not really sure what might be causing it.

I have the same issue. I uninstalled Ram Booster and disabled Power Savings Mode. Problem still exists but volume change is much less. Also ,it happens exactly when screen turns off. Factory reset did not solve it for me.

I just started experiencing this issue as well. Never noticed it before as I always had my phone on silent for school but now that im on vacation I turned the sound back on and I can't hear the locking and unlocking sounds unless the phone is right next to my ear. The keyboard and the basic touch sounds are very quiet too. Wondering if you managed to fix this problem ?

Hey Florad77,
Yes i did manage to fix it. Tasker is the culprit. Its not playing nice with the 4.3 update. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and everything was working fine. No volume changes. Then i set up some tasks, simple ones like turn off my Bluetooth when i leave my truck etc. And low and behold the sound issues came back. It must be when tasker trys to run tasks that it F,s everything up in the phones settings for sound. I just uninstalled it again and i also removed secure settings as well. Here is a review of Tasker from google play with the same sound problems.
Bob Porvan November 30, 2013
Sound notifications don't work... After the recent update, notifications stopped playing sound files, unlike always. A power related task keeps firing when it's not supposed to. 4.3.yuga.pac

I hope this fixes your problem. Mine is work just fine now after the uninstall.
Volume issues fixed.
OK. I was still having the problem even after deleting most of the apps i thought were causing the problem. But had no luck fixing the volume issue. I remembered my son saying he has had a problem with his phone not connecting to the Bluetooth also but his had a different error. So i asked him what his issue was and he said every time he tries to connect he gets an error saying "unable to play during call" So i googled his problem and found the answer and it fixed his Bluetooth error. I then checked my own settings and changed it also and if fixed mine.
So If you use text plus go to settings and unselect enable incoming calls, and that will fix the unable to play during call error when using your music player over Bluetooth. And like me if your also having volume issues after connecting to Bluetooth it will fix that also. Make sure to reboot your phone after the change.
I hope this helps somebody as this problem has been driving me crazy for months now. I was so close to doing a factory reset and re flashing the rooted 4.3 rom again.

The problem with the volume that you are facing is because of a secret call in the background via Hangouts.
Basically Hangouts connects a call with someone in the background without user's interaction and phone goes into call mode.
And in call mode volumes are adjusted appropiately as it should be in a normal call and all the sounds come out of earpiece.
If you turn off Hangouts, you will not get this problem again.
Hit Thanks!, if it helps
My volume keys don't work at all when in a call when the phone is held to my ear. To change the in call volume I have to take the phone off my ear so that the screen can come on, and then press the volume rocker.
Is this by design or is there something wrong with my device?
Update: this seems to be working intermittently for me. What could be the issue? I'm so stumped.
Same here. It's pissing me off. Anyone else have this issue?

I have the same problem. Stock international + ROOT and Xposed. It's really really annoying.
Hey,
Exactly the same configuration as above. Same issue as you all guys. I think this is intentional though
I don't believe it is, it would be the first phone I see with this "feature".
Ok, now I am really getting confused. Reading of @angadreme also having Xposed, I thought it must be some Xposed module. I disabled all of them and rebooted -> volume buttons working with screen off during call. I thought it could be one of the options about volume buttons with screen off of Sense 6 toolbox, so I re-enabled all modules except S6TB and rebooted. Volume buttons still working. Then I enabled S6TB again, rebooted and... volume buttons still working.
Still not responsive in call

Hey,
Am now wondering if my phone has an issue...I had this 'feature' (you're true, this should not happen at all...) since the very first day I bought it...all stock and so on.
Now that I'm running ARHD 8.0 with or withouht ElementalX, with or without Sense Toolbox, still the same issue...not TOO annoying, but still.
What do you suggest ? Shall I go for a replacement ?
No, it's clearly a software issue, I don't think it would make sense to ask for a replacement which would most likely have the same problem (assuming that they accept to replace the phone). If it's a firmware bug, it will sooner or later be fixed. If you had this problem even before rooting, it might be related to some app we have both installed. In case you find out more, please let me know, I am also going crazy for this little annoying issue!
By the way, after my last post, the volume buttons kept working without problems until I next rebooted the phone, which was several days later. Now they are again not working. -.-
