Purchasing a HTC One V- Just a few questions. - HTC One V

Hello there everybody,
I've been searching for a new Android phone under £200 for the past few days and I stumbled across the HTC One V and it seems like a good upgrade from my OSF2 but I just have a few questions before I decide on ordering it in a few weeks time.
I'll be buying it from ASDA online for only £179 sim-free which seems to be a pretty good deal so I'm just wondering what to expect (in terms of quality of the design etc) from the device when compared to the lower budget phones I've purchased in the past- Samsung Galaxy Europa I5500 and the Orange San Francisco II (OSF2).
I'll be rooting/installing custom recovery and ROMs as soon as I'm comfortable with the device (Which will probably be within a few days) so I understand the toolkit is a pretty easy-to-use tool but I'm wondering which Custom Recovery is the best/most reliable for the HTC One V, on my past devices I've always used Clockworkmod but if the other recoveries are better for the One V then I'll be sure to flash the most compatible/reliable recovery.
Which Custom ROMs are fully working and also is there any ROMs that are fully working and have the stock ICS/JB appearance as I'm not really a fan of the actual appearance of HTC devices although I could learn to love it I guess! So which ROMs would you guys recommend for a fully working/stable daily use device and is there any fully working stable Jelly Bean ROMs?
Finally, I noticed a thread about the HTC One V having a nag for getting bricked easily, some of the things were ridiculous such as holding a certain button combination and when the battery is low it will die and not turn back on. Just wondering if it's a major issue.
Thanks for the taking the time to read this.
Curtis.
EDIT-
I forgot to ask;
Does A2SD scripts + A2SDGUI work on this device? I like to move my Dalvik Cache to my 16gb class10 SD so it'd be nice if it works and how do I know which type of device my phone is as I heard there's something about an International version and a Virgin version (Primou or something like that? I'm completely lost) And finally; what's a stable over-clock for this device? My current phone is 800mhz but is overclocked to 122-902mhz with no issues, just wondering what kinda speed I can boost the One V up to.
Thanks again.

Bump!
Quite eager to get an answer before I purchase!

I can help a little
There are two recoveries for the one v
TWRP 2.3.1 and CWM 6.0.1
If you are Europe you will get the PrimoU (primo means one U probably means international) it is GSM
The PrimoC is the CDMA version now with its own forum so GSM is under android dev and CDMA is under CDMA dev.
I reccomend the TWRP recovery because I love having a touch screen recovery.
OC and UV settings:
OC'ing: 345min - 1200 or 1500 Max
UV'ing: 245min - 768 or 1024max
Always make nand backups before flashing. Read the directions multiple times. And grab the RUU for your carrier / country if you screw your phone over past restoring a nand backup.
On topic for ROMS bro you are covered. The primoU has everything from Cm9, cm10, aokp, miui, sense ROMs, to PAC man. Your never short of stability either.
The one weird thing to HTCs is you have to flash the kernel from the ROM .zip file (boot.IMG) to get the phone to boot after all that junk
So the process from recovery would be:
-wipe system (factory reset)
-wipe dalvik
Then boot into boot loader
Grab a kernel flasher script (somewhere in forums)
Grab the boot.IMG and use the script and flash it
THEN you can boot into the ROM
I love my one v CDMA sometimes it can be weird but I love it
Sent from my One V using xda app-developers app

Thanks for the reply, helped a lot!

For flashing there is no need of any script. You can just use fastvoot flash boot boot.img....
Sent from my One V using xda app-developers app

Can anyone verify if a2sd scripts and A2SDGUI are comparable with this device? I like to move my dalvik cache to SD to save space for plenty of apps. Also does the 1ghz processor struggle with playing games like Temple Run? Finally, can you replace the original stock Sense launcher to something like Apex Launcher from the PlayStore (Probably a stupid question but just want to know if Sense locks things down like that).
Thanks

HTC Desire - New to android modding - help needed

Hey everyone,
I'm really new to android modding, and don't know much about all this. I'm good at modding but never been on android before. I went through the stickies and full desire guide etc threads, but its really getting confusing for me.
I've come to know some things: (correct if wrong)
1) You have some custom ROMs which you can flash after rooting the phone.
2) Most ROMs have pretty much everything working, but some things don't work on some ROMs (like camera for some)
3) Rooting voids warranty.
Seeing the vast amount of ROMs in the development section, I'm confused which one to look for. Can anyone suggest me which would be the best (stable and everything working) ROM for me? I basically need APP2SD or APP2SD+ (NOT the froyo one because its useless, I'm talking about the custom one) and minor tweaks like changing the homescreen etc.
Which would be the best suited ROM for above description? Basically, what criteria decide which ROM to put on the phone?
@Moderators, sorry if its the same old story. I'm really confused and so HAD to make a thread.
Hi and welcome. A couple of points I can help you with:
There are loads of roms to choose from, I am using this rom atm:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Everything on this particular rom works fine and is very fast and stable. I generally find if roms have several revisions then are are generally very good. i.e. are having continuous support and developement.
As for rooting voiding warranty? Well this is no longer an issue as rooting can easily be reversed )
Hope this helps

You do indeed need to Root the device before flashing, the only ROM that don't have 'things working' is the Desire HD ROM. I am not sure if that has been fixed or not yet though. All the other AOSP and Sense based Desire ROMs have everything working just fine. Rooting will void your warranty but it's super easy to reverse so there is nothing to worry about.
The most popular ROMs by far seem to be the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROMs (Non-Sense ROMs), all of them will have APP2SD built into them, the Sense ROMs also have APP2SD built into them.
LeeDrOiD is by far the most popular Sense based ROM, RCMixHD is the Desire HD based ROM, which I think still doesn't have the camera working.
And by far the most popular Desire ROM overall is the ASOP Cyanogen based DeFrost.
To get the most out of APP2SD you will need to download ROM Manager and create an EXT3 partition on your SD card so the ROM will place all of the Froyo compatable apps into the partion and not your internal memory.
Being brand new to the desire, I've flashed every Rom available in the last 2 weeks.
Leedroid is a very good sense Rom. I prefer having a Rom with sense right now because this is my first HTC.
Right now I'm running the Aurax sense Rom, solely because it has its own setCPU built in.
The hd roms didn't impress me that much, not yet at least, with a little more time they will be awesome though.
The MIUI roms are also amazingly pretty, if you don't mind the iPhone feel. My only problem with it though, and I've been told this hardly happens, my battery life was pathetic.
At the end of the day though, apart from the hardware, it is android and all the available apps that make our phone so great.
All the custom roms do add a lot of speed to the phone though, you have to do a quadrant after you flash so that you can see how awesome the Rom makes your phone run. They also add additional functionality compared to the stock Rom.
Honestly, I can't see why anyone would keep any Android device stock when there are such amazing roms around. At the end of the day its all down to your own preferences and what functions you like. You'll love any Rom you flash.

Thanks for such amazing replies. Meanwhile, I've also been through many ROMs and their descriptions. The terminologies are kinda new for me, but I can understand many things now....
The only thing I care about right now is App2SD because I found FroYo's move to SD doesn't help much. Also second thing is that I'm not having MY desire yet, its my friend's device m gonna try out everything on! So I'd be taking some extra care!
One big relief is that rooting is reversible. That'd be cool.
What are the odds of bricking your phone while flashing or applying mods?

It is honestly impossible to brick a desire. I bricked my MOTO backflip, there was no coming back from that. With the desire I flashed something that didn't work, but pressing volume down and power gets you right into the hbooot menu, from there just mount as usb and copy over a new Rom to flash.
The one thing you need to remember, when flashing new roms the first boot takes a while, never pull the battery thinking there's nothing happening, that will destroy your phone and there's no coming back from that.
Before every Rom you flash make sure to do a factory reset in the recovery menu, that ensures that the new Rom will work to its full capability and minimizes the chances of experiencing problems.

You can brick your device flashing Radios, but you can always send it back to HTC, pay them an extortionate amount and they will revive it for you. But overall, the chances are slim to none in my experience.
Just make sure, after rooting, you make a Nandroid backup of the OS. Then you can do whatever you like to the phone and it will be reversable.
I keep a Nandroid of my DeFrost ROM, and one of my PaysROM, and I have one of my MoDaCo R8, you can switch between them just using Recovery, as the mood takes you, absolutely everything will be exactly as it was everytime you load the backup back onto the phone, I just wipe the cache, Dalvik Cache, factory reset the ROM then reinstall whichever ROM I want to use (DeFrost, PaysROM etc etc) from the SD card and then backup from the Nandroid.
Depending on the age of your desire, you shouldn't need to flash a radio though. I've never needed to flash a radio, but that's because my desire came with the latest radio, thankfully it still has the amoled screen.
If you do need to replace the radio and somehow brick it, if its still under warranty HTC will replace it for you because there is no way that they can prove you bricked the device.

Wow that means you install a ROM, make settings you want, put in your data (phonebook etc) and then take a full backup. Switching between them is as easy as restoring a backup!
Is that right?
Initially, I'd be trying out ROMs, and would stick to the one which suits me best. I just can't wait before my desire arrives this monthend!!

It saves everything, app data, messages, settings, the lot. Although when switching ROMs I still factory reset, wipe the caches and reinstall the ROM I want to use before loading the backup of that specific ROM. I am not sure things will go so smoothly if you just reload the backups without factory resetting and reinstalling the ROM first, but it won't hurt to try.

The Release Candidate versions have been around for a while, and they've been running on the Desire Z too.
Sorry I don't understand your request, but I recommend you check out the linked posting, i.e. the "proper" thread on the G2 forums.
Will check there. I just wondered about how to install that special patch of brokenworm.
Tried now to install the first part of CM6.1, but already failed at the nandroid backup. I installed ROM Manager, then installed there the Clockwork Recovery and rebooted into yet. But there I failed, it doesn't seem to be available in the recovery part
I also had only the choice between HTC G2 for ClockworkMod Recovery.
Ok found the issue, was missing S-OFF. Fixed it with this guide, section b) :

That's a problem with Clockwork Recovery at the moment, it's not a problem with the ROM. So it will happen with any ROM when you have Clockwork installed (it happens to me, and I have the stock ROM with Clockwork). Hopefully the developer will fix it soon.

You need to root and s-off. A good back up program would be your gmail account .
After a days use:
GPS seems to be working amazingly fast on this version
Battery life is also looking good. 77% after 8 hours,
60% after 12 hours. Lots of texts, few phone calls, 30mins internet use, few hours of listening to MP3's...seems to use no power at all in standby as well
Currently using SetCPU with standard kernel, on-demand governor:
Min: 245 Mhz
Max: 1.1GHz
Not using a profile like 245/245 when screen off which also seems to improve battery life as mentioned in other threads.
Signal strength has been much more stable (used to get a frequent drops/low signal/missed sms etc)
Thanks! Officially a die hard cm fan
Woot woot. So far, other than the standard Cyanogen features, I've noted the phone is substantially smoother than the stock HTC Sense (and even Villision's modified G2 ROM), the battery life is ostensibly through the roof (maybe it's not updating properly, but it's been idle for a few hours now and I've literally not lost a single percent of battery life :|), and in general it just feels much nicer.
That said, my SD card refuses to work, *sigh*.
UPDATE - my battery life just dropped to 99%. After 3 hours off the charger, with wifi and automatic updates on. Crazy.
Just a small question from a newbie
I want to try this cyanogen on my DZ but first... :
- Actually my phone is S-off + root + o/c kernel @ 1.4Ghz... I will do a nAndroid backup before flashing with Cyanogen, but after if for some reason I'm not happy with Cyanogen and a made a nAndroid restore... Will it restore also s-off / root and 1.4Ghz kernel on my stock rom ?
- Flashing with Cyanogen does erase any data on the SDcard ?
- Can I apply the 1.4Ghz kernel of this thread on the cyanogenmod ?
Thanks for your help

If you restore from nand phone will be as you left it. flashing wont wipe your sd card & cyanogenmod comes with overclockable kernel as standard...just use setCPU
hope this helps.

I recommend you guys use the CM thread over in the G2 forum, there are a ton more people in that thread who you can share experiences with and ask for advice etc.
Agreed. I come from a Nexus One (amongst others), so anyone can ask me questions via PM or here if they need to. I'm also in the g2 section, as it's a TON busier than over here, lol. You'll find most information you need with just about everything over there.
first time trying cyanogen... kina traumatized with flashing coz i migrated from using a galaxy s...
but this rom is GREAT! super smooth, and super snappy. i'll be doing a test run with the batt tomorrow. i can usually get it to last 16 hours with a fair amount of browsing, 2-3 hours use with bluetooth stereo, and a average calls and sms. so i'm hoping this rom can squeeze out more batt life.

[Q] Many custom ROMS used, Desire increasingly slower.

I have been an avid reader and user of ROMs on XDA for the last year, and only just created an account to thank people for their work.
I have used mainly Sense UI Roms and the odd non-Sense on occasion.
Every ROM i've used, i've wiped cache, Dalvik Cache and factory reset.
Everyone seems to get very fluid and smooth actions on their roms and has nothing bad to say about it, and on Youtube videos its always great, however mine is laggy at best.
In keeping with the rules, here is a list of what i'm running
Desire (SLCD) T-Mobile UK
S-ON
Rom - RunnymedeMod007 v03
Kernal - 2.6.35.14-gingercakes-0.9-avs
Baseband - 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08
CWM Recovery 2.5.0.7
16Gb Class 10 SD Card with 2Gb EXT4 partition and the rest FAT32, done using Gparted.
I was wondering, based on the above info, if this was all compatible.
i'm fairly confident with using new roms and the like however I get pretty lost with all the different versions of things that go hand in hand with roms.
If it wasn't for XDA i doubt i'd have the confidence to even try it, so thanks everyone for the hard work you put in to get ROMS to people like myself.
Regards,
Paul
before you install a new ROM.. do you do a full wipe (i.e. go to mounts & storage, format boot, system, data, cache?) if no, then do so and you should see a great improvement. If you are then I dunno what to tell you.. suppose if you're using 2EXT ROMs then you can use the SD-Booster thing (sorry forgot what it's called lol).. that's my advice
I just noticed there on my phone after you posted this. I will certainly try this out and post back. It may well help others in the same situation.
Paul
Just to check back. That's made a vast improvement. It even looks and feels much better
Thank you for your help

[ROM]Stock 2.3.4, Sense 2.1[Rooted][Apps2sd][MetroPCS]- Only for marvelc
Ok...
Now for pre-installation advice.
You are going to want to have your bootloader unlocked. Either by HTC's [htcdev.com] method or by some other method. If you don't have your bootloader unlocked; it's pretty much impossible to flash a custom rom. Unlocking your bootloader voids your warranty [1 yr typically], but it opens the door of opportunity. Weigh your decision and make it.
If no, stop reading; if you've unlocked proceed.
Next you are going to want to be rooted. I followed Heritz guide [and installed alquez recovery] way back when, but there are several methods on this as well. Get it done.
Ok... You are almost ready to flash.
Lastly, you need to partition your sd card for use with some scripts &/or apps. There are many good guides on doing this as well. Here is one I recommend:
Ok. Pre-installation is a check. All systems are go. Proceed to flash appropriate rom at your own disgression.
Team MarvelUS is not responsible nor should be held liable for ignorance or bricking your device or pretty much anything. As our roms are freely published, the best we can offer is support and if you don't like that, we'll offer a full money-back guarantee.

Just an update on this, so I installed the ROM on my wife's wildfire, partitioned SD card and moved Dalvik and apps to SD, installed Links2SD as well, did the same, opens up a ton of space on the phone...I also installed the above mentioned kernel for the phone as well and have it overclocked to 786, however the phone has an issue on wake, it takes a little while to get going and there is always a lag when the phone wakes up. Don't know if its a phone issue or a ROM/Kernel issue, but when you wake the phone up, unlock the screen, it takes a couple of seconds before you can click on anything, and if you tried to click on anything it then tries to catch up.

I changed this thread in anticipation of a newer ROM release. Responded to issue on MetroPCS thread referenced in OP.

same category
Agreed. Basically in the same category as my Wildfire S gets firecracker hot when charging and using. Welp its about voltage and frequency control. It has to be built into the kernel. The next logical step in kernel development is undervolting. Surprised I haven't seen it yet, but it takes know-how, time, patience, testing, and a kernel built with the appropriate tools. Now that Mindh4x8r has helped everyone with some of the know-how.. We'll see an undervolting guide and kernel emerge... The answer to those issues though lie in voltage control controlled via the kernel.

[Q] Many ROM Failures

Hello,
I've been an inactive member for a while and don't have the 10 posts required to post in the android development forum yet.
I have Rooted my phone and got the clockwork recovery working, however, they are many ROMs i cant seem to install. After flashing the zip file and rebooting they either sit on the HTC white screen or keep rebooting on the HTC white screen. Why could this be? A few ROMs work but most don't seem to, in particular the ones that dont work are...
1. .SENSE Beta Universal v1.3
2. EQDKP v4.7 multi deodexed
3. HC MIUI3
4. M1ndh4x8r ROM Sense 2.1 GB2.3.5_2_1_2012
5. TurboFire Beta 9
I am mainly looking for a ROM that is Super Fast, has some form of App2SD, prolonged Battery Life, and is them-able using the Theme Chooser found in Cyanogen 7 ( Mainly function over beauty, though cant handle down right ugly)
Thanks,
Before you install the zip you wipe data/factory reset and also wipe the dalvik cache. See if this rids you of issues.
Yeah i do this every time, still no luck though :/
its because of the overclock speeds not everyones phone can handle 806 i found that out for myself i left the cpu at 806 and a few times ended up in a bootloop then i raced in once it eventually started then changed it to stock 600 and it ran fine so it was the overclock in my phone anyone elses i dont know

Thanks,

Thanks, I will try this now. I saw you said install it Twice, I will also try this but it would be harder with .SENSE since there are so many options. And im guessing with the Kernal you just flash it like the normal zip files?
Thanks again,

got nothing to do with this, he can't even boot up the ROM....
how does m1ndh4x8r say in his rom posts to download "600Mhz Default - for phones having OC, and booting problems" that was posted when people were getting freezes and bootloops or black screens i know its a white screen but it cant be that much of a diffrence because once i flashed the 600 default my phone was fine so they must be problems with it im not trying to start an arguement you have been here longer and have more experience with these roms but everytime ive had an overclocked rom its always the same boot problem unless its stock 600

you should find there lots of boot problems because of the overclock on that page

I tried this and it worked for the m1ndh4x8r rom but the .SEnSE one still doesnt wanna know and the TurboFire Beta 9 keeps randomly rebooting (Im guessing this is about the speeds mentioned above)
I've applied the m1nh4x8rs 600mhz default code but it still keeps rebooting
