I've recently learned that it's possible to mount a network share to your android file system using CIFS.
I still don't quite understand how this works, as I've been unable to accomplish this over the last week.
I've flashed 10 different roms and several kernel combinations trying to figure this out, still - to no avail.
I've also spent countless hours researching and haven't found a clear answer.
I was hoping someone could explain the requirements to make this functional.
I found a tutorial which explains how to use Mount Manager and load in the cifs.ko module, but nothing happens; it won't load the module.
At first, I thought it was finding a kernel with cifs support but there is obviously more to it.
Could someone provide some insight as to what makes this possible?
Could you suggest a rom/kernel combination that is known to work?
I'm currently running XenonHD 12-08-12 and would love to keep running Android 4.2. However, i'd switch to a different version if it would provide this functionality.
I'd be most appreciative of you assistance.

what i'm basically asking is for devs from now on to release all roms with .tar.md5 (odin) files as an option instead of just zip files.
the reason i'm asking is because I would like to hook up my wifes phone with a custom rom but it is the newer s3 which for some reason or another (and I know i'm not alone on this) it will not take custom roms. it was a nightmare just to get twrp to work properly and even then after a rom flashes successfully it will be stuck on bootloop or freeze. to my knowledge there is no known solution.
the main one I am looking to get for odin would be the revolt rom. but others are encouraged to do the same. and I am sure I am not the only one who would greatly appreciate it.
I hope this message reaches the right people. thank you advance for any help that is provided.
p.s. I am not new to flashing. I know how to pretty much flash any rom to any phone as I have been doing it for about three years now and I am pretty sure the error is not on my part.
This will not fix the issue with the new S3. Regardless of how you flash the aosp roms just won't boot it has nothing to do on whether they are in zip format or tar file format.
What you are requesting is not practical. The purpose of custom recovery is to flash custom made roms on the fly via a zip. People do not walk around with computers to allow them to flash roms via odin. And if hey did walk around with computers then that would render the smartphone useless.
The recoveries where modded so that storage would mount, which is what was affected originally, the only reason some tar files where made was due to this issue, if you could not mount storage you could not flash the zip. Since that has been addressed flashing a zip is no problem.
To resolve the issue it would take one of these new S3's to handed over to one of the developers to figure out what Samsung / Sprint has modified in order to prevent people from altering their devices.
Have a great day!
Ummm...there is a lot involved to make a tar from a ROM zip. It is not a simple conversion. Not all developers have the equipment to do this. Let's not ask more from the developers than what they are already doing for free. I am sure the developers would have no problem if someone, perhaps you, can set up a linux box to create these tars and provide them for each of the ROMs.
And as Ed stated it will not fix the AOSP issue. What we have is the modified recoveries in the General subforum.
Well is there any type of data like a system dump I could perform that would allow the developers to figure it out? If I am able to help I will. But usually someone figures out a solution before I do.
And please define Linux box. Is that basicly a Linux installation to package all the files? If so I have the resources. I have tons of space and would love to help fellow android folks.
@babyarm85 go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44262749 there are well recognized developers there waiting for someone to provide either information or a phone so they can figure out what has been altered. If we can keep all conversation of this topic there i believe we can accomplish much more. Kenny has already posted your suggestion of a system dump. There was one user who said he was willing to send his device as he had a backup device to one of the developers. But then backed out.
Have a great day!
sorry it took a while for a reply but between school and work and family im kind of a busy person. im gonna head over there and see what I can do.
I have rooted multiple g1s and I have at least installed different roms on the G2 slide, believe I rooted it too but I may have bought it rooted.
When I did root, I know sometimes you have to change the radio, possibly the kernel, and many other things, but I haven't done anything in a long time. This phone thankfully came rooted with FreedomPop through an ebay purchase.
I am seeing things about not running JB modem for Cyganomod Rom 11. I need a refresher and to get up to date with how things work.
Possibly Important: I currently have 2 issues with my phone though, one is that I cannot charge my phone's battery using the port of the phone, and I cannot have my sd card in, otherwise my phone turns off all the time.
Also, I am unable to make Rom Manager do a backup of my current Rom, but somehow I apparently somehow managed to get the recovery to be on my phone... kept giving me errors or just loads forever when trying to flash it.
What all do I need to do to install a CMD11 rom?
Basebane version: S710. 10 S.FL24
Kernel version 3.0.15-1173404
Let me know what else is needed to know for you to better assist me. Please give any advice, tips, warnings, etc. you have.
Thank you in advance.
Hey guys, Kyuubi10 here again.
A little background to the problem:
I was building B14CKB1RD kernel to work with SkyDragon GPe and everything went fine apart from Wi-Fi it seems, so far haven't found anything else malfunctioning.
Possibly battery, which is stuck at 33%, but I have calibrated it and now just waiting for the phone to run out of power again and reboot it to test this out.
3g and bluetooth work fine, haven't tested 4g yet because I'm not in a 4g zone....but I'll try eventually.
Now to deeper details about what I did.
B14CKB1RD kernel doesn't have a ramdisk compatible with SkyDragon ROM, therefore I had to build it with a compatible ramdisk.
So I extracted it and put B14CKB1RD's zImage into a stock kernel, replacing it's own zImage.
At first I did other stuff, which broke all connectivity hardware (nfc, bluetooth, mobile data and wifi), the one which worked best was swapping out only the zImage. This works completely - to my knowledge - except for wifi.
Do any of you experienced developers know how to fix this? I'll be researching myself until I find a solution, any help would be highly appreciated.
Ok, an update into the issue...
After trying multiple things I came to the conclusion that I just simply have no idea of what I'm doing hehe.
I did figure out that the battery stuck at 33% is definitely a bug.
But I'd still appreciate is someone could explain to me in nooby terms what went wrong. Since I followed some guides yet none of them seemed to work for me.
A brief explanation of what I tried...I downloaded a boot.img from the original thread. Also downloaded the stock boot.img, and downloaded ElementalX kernel as well, just to try it out.
I unpacked each boot.img, and I tried mixing them up in a variety of ways. Since I wanted B14CKB1RD's kernel I used it's zImage, and since I knew that the stock kernel ramdisk and elementalx ramdisk both worked with SkyDragon I tried once with each, swapping their zImage for B14CKB1RD's zImage, while keeping their ramdisk.
Both resulted in Wi-Fi and the previously mentioned battery bugs.
I know that Modules weren't the problem, I did a variety of tests with them as well, but the one constant thing is the problem mentioned above.
What confused me the most is that when I used the B14CKB1RD boot.img by itself even though almost nothing worked battery seemed fine. No battery bugs.
With the other two boot.img files when I extracted them from their respective zips, and put them into my own zip the battery was fine, what failed to work in that instance was the Wi-Fi.
So yeh, just sharing my experiments with you guys, if any of you is able to explain it simply to me I'd seriously appreciate.
But for now I'll simply ask around to see if anyone has already done what I need, rather than breaking things doing it myself
Hi all I'm needing some help, I've been reading through both original and android development sections and looking for the best rom for the Samsung T705. Currently I have rooted my device from Stock using CF-Auto-Root-klimtlte-klimtltexx-smt705.
Although this allows my device to have full root access, it keeps the device as stock as possible. However I have noticed that the battery usage is terrible on this device and that's even with power saving mode enabled. Also switching between apps sometimes lags and is full of Samsung bloatware.
I'm looking for a reliable custom rom that is designed to improve battery consumption and remove all the Samsung bloatware. Their are many roms to choose on this site but don't know which is the overall most favourite or most reliable.
Finally, if I go ahead with a chosen rom when it comes to installing, it is recommended to backup the current rom and install using a recovery tool installed to the tablet. With me using CF-Auto-Root-klimtlte-klimtltexx-smt705 rom no recovery rom has been installed to my tablet as I installed this rom using origin via PC. How can I install a recovery rom on my tablet before installing a custom rom/kernel?
Manny Thanks
No one is gonna give you the answer you want. It boils down to trying all and stick to what favours you most
And as for How to install custom recovery and custom ROM,i think you should befriend Google and YouTube, coz you apparently need to learn alot of basics.
Thanks for your response and I don't rely on YouTube for this type of support as a lot of it is false. I use this website as its more accurate and no bull****. But would be nice to get some help for a novice instead of shooting him down. After all it is a help and troubleshoot section of this forum, we all have to start somewhere.

I as well am looking for a custom or even a stock rom for my SM-T705W. I have not been able to update bootloader or modem to MM. At present it is running Lollipop and I would so much like to run MM or Nougat rom.
I have literally tried to flash almost everything in the Tab S areas that are made for the T705. I wish I could assist you. Someone will help you out with some guidance I am sure, this is a great place.
One thing I have noticed on my device, when I try and wipe or backup using TWRP, I always get a 'Failed to mount /hidden ' error and I am not sure what that partition is or if all the Tabs have one. Perhaps that is why I can not flash a newer bootloader and modem and also a MM or custom rom. Anyways, sorry to hijack thread...good luck.
So I have been keeping up with everything. Twrp, root, GSIs, etc. I am currently stock rooted. One of the most useful tools for me at work is DriveDroid. It makes it easy to carry a few different bootable images on my phone instead of trying to stash a bunch of USB drives at work and hope they dont get moved. As it stands DriveDroid is not working for me. I've read it could be the kernel, and I've read that it could be the rom. Can anyone currently running a GSI that is rooted tell me if DriveDroid works? Make sure it works and doesn't just run (boot a distro or even the test drivedroid gives you). If it does work, then I can rule out the kernel and blame it on the stock rom.
I would just install a GSI myself and test it, but seeing as so many of you are already running a GSI, I assumed it would be easier to ask the nice people in the community as opposed to having to redo my phone yet again.
Thank you in advance. Any input is much appreciated
Edit: I bit the bullet and flashed a GSI. There were other things I wanted to play with. Drivedroid does not work
