[Q] T999(Tmobile) Root ADB Linux? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I got a new phone, SGS3, and after 24hours I decided it needs a stripped ROM. I have always used ADB and, or FASTBOOT on my other phones. I cant find anything saying how to get root other than through ODIN. I dont run windows though. I cant figure out how to get rw on anything other than the sdcards in the ADB shell. It doesnt come with SU or BUSYBOX. I copied both from my last phone to /storage/sdcard0 and updated PATH, still no luck.
I did sideload an OTA firmware (no root). When I try to sideload anything else it copies over then fails verification. OEM recovery says, "E:failed to mount /sdcard". Any tips for me to gain root without windows? What partition is recovery (double checking) so I can push/load TWRP too? No luck with Goomanager, nothing actually installs. I couldnt get root66 or a few other rooted roms either. Thanks for any help. Sorry, for such a simple question.

Ok. Im using Heimdall-1.4.0 on Knoppix (Live) and getting flash counts now. Heimdall upload fails "ERROR: Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence!" but the counter shows the flash. I flashed --no-reboot, pulled the battery and booted directly into recovery (showed the blue text) but it never loaded recovery and after about 3 minutes it booted the OS. I tried to boot recovery again and OEM recovery was back. I tried TCWM and CWM. I have no Windows PC or discs for VMBox, and WINE didnt detect it.
PS. Well, i took it too far. I couldnt get it to flash recovery but I did flash boot. If I remember correctly, heimdall --no-reboot --flash --7 boot.img. I did it once and it skipped recovery (i was trying) and booted the OS. I rebooted again and recovery was back. I did another boot.img and now it wont boot. No recovery, download or boot. The buttons do nothing now. It does light the led red sometimes when plugged in. It does not get seen by adb, Heindall and even Odin. (I borrowed an Ex's Vista briefly). I even tried installing the Samsung USB drivers.
Here is dmesg...
Code:
[11397.924122] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 22 using ehci_hcd
[11398.056989] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=05c6, idProduct=9008

Any ideas? Am I totally stuck at jtag?

[Q] Faulty USB Connector - back to stock for RMA?

The USB connector on my SGS seems to have stopped working properly. Charging works fine but data comms doesn't.
When I connect the device to Windows machine (tried vista and win7 32 and 64) I get the "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned...". My linux box doesn't see the device either and I have tried Odin + voldown, home power. When I hold the connector cable in place at an angle it sometimes gets to the point where the phone brings up the menu options for mass storage, however as soon as I let it go it disconnects. *Conclusion: bent pin or faulty connector.
So my dilemma, I am currently on a rooted JPC rom, need to send the phone in for RMA, how can I get back to stock rom without USB connectivity? ROM manager fails to install clockwork properly so I am stuck with the stock recovery?

try removing the existing usb drivers and/or kies, reboot, reinstall drivers
Hi thanks, I have tried on a number of machines. A clean windows 7 install without kies installed. Also when I put the phone into mass storage mode even my linux box doesn't recognize the phone. Have tried new cables as well.
Since you mention cwm, i presume you have a stock cwm image. I also presume you have wifi. In that case:
1) download and install adbwireless from the market.
2) download cwm recovery from here
3) Connect adb on your desktop to adbwireless (start adbwireless, on desktop type adb connect ipaddress:5555 or whatever adbwireless reports as the connection ip)
4) rename the cwm recovery on your desktop to update.zip and push to your sdcard - command is adb push update.zip /sdcard/
5) reboot into 2e - run cwm
6) Restore cwm image that you have of stock

Thanks, was not aware that one can do adb over wifi. This will help.
Two things, I do not have 2e flashed only stock recovery. this doesn't seem to work on JPC. When I try Clockwork's update.zip from stock recovery I get:
Code:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Hmmm dont really know how to switch to 2e from 3e without Odin...will let you know if i find out.
Silly question but?
You use a new usb cable?
Already happened to me
Dont have the details, This maybe of use to you. Once on 2e, you can flash any update.zip - with adbwireless + adb - you should be set.

[Q] Cannot boot device/cannot boot into recovery/not recognized in Download Mode

I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP THIS POOR UNFORTUNATE SOUL....
My device is a Sprint Samsung Epic 4g.
I was running SleeperROM with a MTD partition map and had CWM v5.0.2.7
I downloaded TWRP 2.5 and then rebooted into CWM.
I flashed the TWRP and once it completed it said to reboot recovery. Within CWM menu I selected 'Reboot Recovery'. Nothing happened. So I proceeded to do a battery pull to manually boot into recovery.
>>When I attempt to boot into recovery, it just hangs at the SAMSUNGwwwdotsamsungdotcom screen. I tried the manual recovery boot by holding down:
a. Both volume buttons+camera+power (which always worked by releasing buttons after second SAMSUNG screen flashes)
b. Voume down+camera+power.
>>Device hangs at SAMSUNGwwwdotsamsungdotcom screen when I attempt booting device.
>>I am able to get device into Download Mode. But upon connecting to PC (Windows XP) , I get the USB Device Not Recognized flag.
Device Manager lists it as Unknown Device.
I have tried all USB ports. I installed a PCI USB 2.0 card as well. All USB ports give same result.
I have tried 2 of my USB cables, 2 of my roomate's USB cables, and 1 of my neighbor's USB cable.
I have installed and uninstalled then following several times:
Samsung_Mobile_Driver_V1.3.800_For_SPH-d700_Epic_4G
Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0
Samsung_Usb_Drivers_x32
I tried getting drivers via PDANet, MobileGo, and Samsung Kies.
Heimdall's Zadig option lists device as Unknown Device, thus not possible.
I'm into my 8th hour of frustration. Any help would be appreciated.

Err if I recall correctly, that version of CWM is BML only. If that's the case, then you are on BML and not MTD. You should manually uninstall all drivers off the machine. Reboot and run a registry cleaner, like CCleaner. Try to install the drivers again.
Hopefully you will be able to get that installed properly. If not, then use another computer. At least you aren't bricked, just caught in a hung boot.
So reflash that version of CWM, and from there you can flash whatever.

You can also try using heimdall in a virtualbox with linux to flash to stock if method above doesnt work.

[Q] Copy files from PC while in recovery mode?

Hey there,
I just wanted to update to another ROM and put the .zip file on my device and then rebooted to recovery and wiped my cache etc.
Somehow the .zip file is missing as well now though, I'm not sure why but it seems to have been deleted when I cleared the cache, etc.
Now I'm left without a .zip file to flash and a totally wiped system without a ROM :/
Is there a way to copy data from PC to the Nexus 7 device while in recovery mode? I tried connecting it via USB but it doesn't show up...
edit: Well after a lot of reading it looks like fastboot is the only option for me. Google USB drivers don't seem to be compatible with Windows 8.1 64bit and therefore I cant get my device to show up in "adb devices". Luckily "fastboot devices" works and I guess I'll just try flashing the stock recovery image now.
That's why I have bought an OTG cable (B letter inscribed on the cable, the others I've tried (4 models) without that B, didn't work with my flo, dunno why) and I have an USB strick to get files like zips from my PC. Or get a stick with both micro USB and USB connections.

Need help with adb sideload in stock recovery

I'm trying to update from 8.0 to 8.1 using the ota file posted on the Google images site using stock recovery and adb sideload and I can't get it to work. The phone is totally stock, locked, no root etc. I'm using an Ubuntu based distro on my laptop. I have the adb and fastboot working showing the serial numbers when testing adb devices / fastboot devices. I added the path to platform tools and tools in my bashrc. I have 51 android rules. My phone is being recognised by all accounts. How ever when ever I adb sideload update.zip nothing actually happens at all on my pc. The phone screen sits there saying verifying update package or something but nothing actually flashes or happens. I have tried usb 2.0 & usb 3.0 ports, different usb a - c cables. I even got fresh downloads of the ota package. I went a step further and reinstalled the android SDK. By all means it should work as the phone is recognised in all modes including sideload but nothing happens when the phone should be side loading the ota file. Please help! Thanks in advance
Are you in recovery mode and USB Debugging is turned on?
Usb debugging is turned on in the main phone settings. The phone was in recovery and apply update from adb mode
I'm not enrolled into beta etc. Phone is 100% stock
To update I bought yet another usb cable and this one worked and I was able to complete the update. It was a usb 3.0 A - C 1 meter cable and I used a usb 3.0 port on my laptop.

Went back to stock, ota, now computer doesn't see tablet in download mode

After rooting the device (n 5110) and installing a custom recovery I had to flash it back to stock (which I had to download because I somehow didn't have it backup from before) in order to get an OTA update. I used Odin to flash back to stock and AFAICT everything seems fine. After the update I don't see what was different, the android system was 4.4.2 before the update, but I was prompted to update so I did. Now am looking to reflash the custom recovery and install a custom rom. I didn't have a custom ROM on it before, just custom recovery and root.
So I'm trying to flash TWRP back on it so I can flash a custom ROM. I recall flashing TWRP and rooting was pretty problematic the first time and I don't recall what I did to get it to work.
This time I've tried following the instructions for flashing lineage os. Running a windows machine. If the tablet is hooked up booted into system windows sees it and I can transfer files to and from the tablet via explorer, both the internal memory and sdcard, if that matters, so I know the cable and usb port are functional. I just flashed stock yesterday, so I guess they would be.
I've enabled USB debugging and checked the box to remember the computer. When it's in system, if I type "adb devices" it reports a device, it did say "unauthorized" before I got the prompt and checked the box to remember my computer, after I got the prompt it just listed the device and it seemed fine. If I kill the adb server and disconnect the tablet and reboot tablet into system it's remembering my computer and granting access. Adb reports the device.
I've gone to the samsung site and downloaded the drivers for the tablet and installed them. I've tried updating them both through device manager and zadig that comes with heimdall.. I've tried all three usb ports and three different usb cables.
However whenever I boot into download mode, and type "adb devices" I get blank. I've tried leaving the device plugged in, unplugging and rebooting, then plugging in, I've tried disconnecting and connecting the device at various times, stopping and starting adb, waiting 30 seconds or so before hitting volume up to confirm going into download mode. Adb devices just pulls up blank.
Odin doesn't light up or say anything when I boot it up into download mode, heimdall throws errors when I try to do anything. I have odin 3.09 so I don't see this "AP" button people mention, I think tha'ts supposed to be "PDA" on my current version? I dunno, if I got it to work I'm not sure how I would flash TWRP with it.
If I type "heimdall print-pit", which is part of the instructions for lineage os, I get the following error.
Initialising connection...
Detecting device...
Claiming interface...
Setting up interface...
Initialising protocol...
libusbx: error [windows_transfer_callback] detected I/O error 87: [87] The parameter is incorrect.
ERROR: Failed to send data!Releasing device interface...
I dunno, I have to be missing something, but I don't know what.
