Help with unlocking and rooting - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I can't seem to get this to work. I'm trying to unlock my phone using the nexus toolkit but when I put my phone into fastboot mode and click the unlock option on the toolkit I just get '< waiting for device >'. Every video I watch just shows them plugging the phone in and then having the program unlock it for them. It's not doing the same for me. Any suggestions?

Stop using the toolkit. If something goes wrong you'll have no clue how to fix it. Read one of the "real" rooting guides that uses adb and fastboot and you'll save yourself a whole lot of headache down the road.

Every guide and video I find uses that method. Do you have a link to the other method?

I still get the 'waiting for device' when I do it this way too. I have the most current samsung drivers. I also did everything to set up ADB.

uninstall the drivers and reinstall using the naked drivers.

[Q] Easy Root

Does anyone know is there a one click root app out there for the GN yet? Will Unrevoked be doing a program for this? If not is there an word of one being done? It was made so easy for my DINC I would love to get my free tethering back.
here lets look at a pinned topic from the Gnex General board

Not really what Im talking about since its "it's a non permanent ADB root as it's a 'fastboot boot' and not a 'fastboot flash". I dont want to do this everytime I reboot plus it doesnt unlock the bootloader. Im wanting to know about a simple one step app that is permanent.
I think this is another case for a split forum. Unfortunatly the verizon nexus is different than the non-verizon.
I too am looking to root to get back my 3rd party wifi tether. as of now, I have found nothing that makes me think it is possible "today". Verizon has somehow locked the 3rd party apps. I am not a programer, or claim to be one; but I follow instructions well.
People need to say, I have verizon and I need this....XDA is world wide and people assume that when you are asking a question about a GN you are asking about the version they have and this forum is loaded with non-LTE information, with some LTE info hear and there.
If I find a LTE easy root I will gladly post it here
the insecure doesnt really matter. For what youre talking about it is a permanent flash you will not neet to re root everytime you turn on your phone. I superbooted yesterday. Im currently rooted and my phone has probably been restarted 15 times
It's pretty easy to manually root the LTE GN. The follow steps are for Windows.
Download this zipped package. It contains adb, fastboot, and Paul's unsecured boot.img that will install su and Superuser.apk for you.
Download ADB USB Drivers.
Step 1.) Unlock your bootloader. Put your phone into fastboot mode and install the ADB USB Drivers. Run fastboot-windows from the zipped package
Code:
fastboot-windows oem unlock
Step 2.) Put your phone back into fastboot mode if it reboots after unlocking. Then boot Paul's boot.img
Code:
fastboot-windows boot boot.img
Step 3.) Voila you're rooted... easy as pie.

That would be great if you find anything. As for saying that the superboot I guess ill give it a try. The post says that it will unroot (not sure how that works) on every reboot. Maybe im just not understanding it correctly

I followed this tutorial to set up fastboot and adb on my mac:
http://blog.wapnet.nl/2011/05/setup-adb-and-fastboot-with-android-sdk-on-mac-osx/
Then you just need the boot.img linked above and use the same commands(except use the mac fastboot that you set up earlier)
There were no drivers needed to be installed.

The commands are the exact same as the commands for windows except your fastboot probably isn't called fastboot-windows.
I found this guys and it seems to be the best and most straight forward guide to rooting the GN Ive found. Take a look http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-rooting-roms-hacks/141563-guide-how-unlock-bootloader-root-verizon-galaxy-nexus.html

Once you have fastboot loaded and the drivers, it's just a matter of booting to the bootloader and doing a fastboot OEM unlock. It should be no different.

OP:
No one will likely be doing a one-click system since this is a Nexus. Manual root is superior, and it is incredibly easy with some light knowledge of fastboot and adb. Honestly, I feel like if you cannot find your way around rooting a Nexus, perhaps you should not root it. An understanding of the system really comes in handy if you face issues.
Just unlock the bootloader using fastboot (there are instructions for this everywhere), then boot to an insecure boot.img of some sort (superboot is an option, I used koush's ClockworkMod image). Once you have this, you can use adb to push superuser to the system partition. If you overwrite the recovery, don't worry, because there is a script that will overwrite with the stock recovery after each boot.
If you want ClockworkMod permanently installed (as on your DINC, I presume) you will have to rename/remove the script. I have not done this, as I just re-flash ClockworkMod every time I alter something.
Hope that helps.

It's picky about recognizing the USB. My problem was actually fixed by using a different USB port. Try reinstalling the drivers, or using a different USB port, or downloading pdanet and maybe some light threats.

Efrants guide is stickied in the general nexus thread. Will tell you everything you need to know
Alright maybe we can help with this lol
I have the drivers installed, It says Samsung ADB device or whatever in device manager.
I have usb debugging enabled.
I hold the up and down button and power
Should it say "fastboot usb" or just fastboot, On my evo it said fastboot usb when connected.
I have the galaxynexusroot package from the asian guy which simply contains fastboot.
I open command window where it's at.
And type "fastboot oem unlock"
And it just says waiting for device. I'm certain the drivers are there.
What's my problem?
If boss don Efrant's guide can't get you there then try Google or use the search bar in xda.

I've utilized all 3, Now after installing the drivers from PDAnet which we're suggested by Efrant it just says Android 1.0 under device manager and I can't seem to update it.
And still no luck the unlocking. obviously due to the drivers.
I have the Samsung ADB interface installed. Do I need another driver? It seems I do, But I can't get anything to stick when I go into Fastboot.

I have a new Galaxy Nexus from Sprint updated to 4.2.1
I'm trying to get the drivers installed properly to be able to unlock the bootloader.
I'm in no shape to be flashing any rom I want, Without the drivers installed first.
From efrant's guide, which seems to apply in all situations: "Note that the driver has to install twice: once when your device is booted normally (not required for this tutorial) with USB Debugging enabled in Settings, and once when your device is booted in fastboot (i.e., bootloader) mode (which is required for this tutorial). "

It's saying
windows found driver software for your device but encoutered an error while attempting to install it.
google galaxy nexus bootloader interface.
the hash for the file is not present in the specified catalog file. the file is likely corrupt of the victim of tampering.
if you know the manufacter of your device, you can visit its website and check support section for driver software.
So.... What now.
Are you on windows 8? There are links to full write ups on the drivers in efrant's guide, pertaining to many different situations. With all the driver issues i've heard of, i'm glad to not need any!

FINALLY got it thanks to Windows 7.

[Q] Received Ebay Phone, am I screwed?

Ok, I bought a galaxy nexus SCH i515 off ebay. The phone was listed as verizon, all the information behind the battery came up as sch i515. However when I powered it on. The phone said activate samsung account. The phone matches verizon info on the back. I contacted verizon and they said most likely the phone was rooted and that the phone could not be switched back even after a hard reset (which i did). I have wifi so used that to get on play store and downloaded rootchecker.... it says phone is not rooted.. (did original owner just unroot phone) am I screwed or is there anything I can do to get verizon able to activate it?
1) wrong section
2) follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
after step 2, check in the phone status menu for the model number.
So i'm a noob and after running through all this I can still (and verizon saying that the imei number wasn't in their database) make this work with verizon... i dont want to get this into a boot loop or fry this thing.. sorry for bugging out... I just want to know if this will officially work... again my phone was verizon and was switched to a sprint phone (upon powering up it asked for sprint activation.)

Just to make sure. You are in the bootloader on the phone and you are typing in the Fastboot devices and then OEM unlock command in Windows cmd? Try a different set of drivers. Uninstall the ones you have now and click the link below. Install those and do the "fastboot devices" command again. The naked divers seem to give people the least amount of problems.

as is strewn throughout these forums....ADB and FASTBOOT use different drivers. just because you have adb working doesnt mean that fastboot is setup properly

Hello. I think I am near you. I was on the latest stock 7.1.2 of may. Unlocked bootloader ok. Then boot the TWRP and flash the TWRP zip. After that I have bootloop all time. I can put the phone in bootloader but now my phone is not recognised by the computer. The first time I connected the phone he asked me what to do and I said transfers data. But now I cannot do anything.
How did you get in fastboot mode???
Any idea how to help me???
I really appreciate help!!

Hello,
You need to read this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...signing-boot-images-android-verified-t3600606
The thread contains a zip (verified boot signer v2 zip) that you must install right after you install the TWRP zip on latest May version...
This is weird your phone is not recognized while in bootloader.
Boot the bootloader and issue:
fastboot devices
Does it output your serial number in the command prompt?
Good luck...

Thank for your answer. The real problem was that in fastboot the phone is not recognised. There were no serial number. And I write in past because I could made it work.
I am very happy you worried about me. You have a new friend in Spain.
Thanks.

Hey,
No problem. Glad you solved it by yourself anyway. What was the issue? Maybe others with the same problem could benefit from your experience?
Why your computer didn't recognized your phone while in bootloader?
Cheers...

I really don't know the problem. I was just about to cry when I saw a post about skipsoft toolkit. And I thought why not to try. I installed that software in other pc, follow the instructions and now I am here again.
Yesssss!!!!

You shouldn't be modding you're device if you have to rely on a toolkit to save you. What if there wasn't a toolkit. You'd be SOL.
I highly recommend you learn how to use fastboot and adb, and do this stuff the right way. I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I just would hate to see you brick you're device. These pixel phones cost way too much to be screwing around with if you don't know what you're doing.

Thanks. I am trying to learn. Not only fastboot or adb. English too. But sometimes I am a bit risky or only stupid.
By the way, recommend me a post or a place to learn.

Honestly the best way I found to learn adb and fastboot is YouTube. It's so much easier to watch how to do it. Thats how I learned. There's also @Heisenberg 6p guide. That can get you all setup for adb and fastboot too. It's very comprehensive.
