Computer doesn't recognize all files on external micro sd card? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Okay so when I plug my s3 into my computer obviously I have two options when I click my device through my computer...Internal and external storage. When I'm looking at my external storage through something like MyFiles on my phone it shows all the app data and such just fine, but when I look at my external micro sd through my computer it only shows 3 files (mobile, podcast, lost.dir). Anyone know why this is? I just got a 32gb micro sd and was just going to straight up copy everything from my current card onto my desktop, insert new 32gb card, then paste onto it. Obviously I'll be missing some stuff though..any help?

We need a little more information about your phone to determine a cause.
What ROM are you on and what version of that ROM?

There is a known external SD card issue in that ROM. You can follow the ROM thread here to see if it will get resolved. A number of users are experiencing similar issues and some have reported a fix, but other's have stated it did not work. This fix was to mount the ext sd card using recovery and fix permissions.

In case anyone else runs into a problem similar to mine, I've figured out a sorta "fix". Since all I wanted to do was move files from point A to point B this works for what I need just fine. There is an app called "ASTRO File Manager" that creates zip files out of whatever you want. I simply created a zip file of everything my computer didn't recognize, luckily my computer recognized said zip file, then I moved the zip file over to my PC then to my new SD card and unzipped. Boom everything there! I guess this would also be useful for those simply trying to backup their stuff to their PC.

[Q] Cannot find cwm backup files on phone/sd card

I backed up my files using cwm because i wanted to flash a rom. I tried flashing the rom and it did not work. I then went into recovery mode and everything went fine. Got all my files and apps/data back. For the life of me I cannot find the file in which the backup is located. I have been in the clockworkmod folder......nothing. I have read the other threads about this and tried everything. The backup files are on my phones internal memory and I only have about 1GB left after then backups. I need to find these files desperately so I can delete them and get some memory back. Any thoughts on how I can go about doing this so I can stop stressing out. I really cannot find the files location. It is baffling. Thanks for any help that comes my way.

The back up file is located at /data/media/clockworkmod/backup. I know you already found out how to do it with the app, but I felt I should tell you.

Didn't mean to thank you. You actually don't need a root browser. The rom manager app actually tells you where the files backups are stored. The path is right under 'Backup Current Rom'

I tried using a root browser and even checked hidden files. Still could not find the files. Using cwm was the only solution. Anybody know anything about 64GB sd cards and getting them to work in a t mobile galaxy s4. i have formatted every which way, exfat, fat32 and still my files will not stay on the card. I usually get a damaged sd card notification or blank sd card. I have contacted t mobile. They told me their S4's were only compatible with 32GB sd cards. I have tried with two different cards. I'm thinking about getting another card, but need information on what to do once I receive the card.

I have no problems using the 64gb card in either FAT32 or exFAT format.
Are you stock Rom or what Rom?
What brand sd card are you using? Could just be a bad card.

I bought a sandisk 64gb. I seems to be working well.....so far. I will let you know.
Your card may not be completely hosed. You may be able to save it by reformatting it.
Thing is, while TouchWiz carries the ability to handle exFAT-formatted cards (the standard for SDXC cards), CWM ordinarily not (this is due to patent issues; blame Microsoft). Unofficial builds that tack the ability on risk legal trouble so I won't discuss this.
There ARE Windows programs that can reformat the card (like Easus Partition Manager). IINM, there are similar tools already available for LInux and Mac users. While FAT32 prevents you from carrying big files around, it should be visible to any 3rd-party recovery system.
One thing I should chime in. Since the GS4 uses Android 4.2 and up, the nandroid backups you make are hidden away somewhere in your storage. They won't be visible ordinarily because of filesystem protections. As noted earlier, the recovery programs can see their own backups and allow you to manage them. In addition, if you're using CWM, I think ROM Manager (from the same developers) can let you browse the backups from within Android.
PS. I've personally found the best success with SanDisk SD cards. I've had trouble with PNY ones, but I haven't used Sony ones much (usually due to price).

[Q] Running out of Space, Symlinks and Installing Apps to SDcard

Due to size limitations (GPads only coming in 16gb varieties) I am beginning to run low on space on my Gpad (v500 running cm11). However I have a 64gb microSD card and I would like to use this as much as I can to conserve space on the internal memory.
There are a few ways to solve this but I not fully know how to do this.
Firstly, is it possible install apps to microSD card? If so, how? I know some devices support this and some do not. My phone for example does not but I have heard that some people have had success with this.
Next, there are some rather large folders on my internal storage that I would like move to my sdcard however the apps that use those folder can only read them where they are currently located (cmupdates, ebooks, etc).
I read about symlinks and managed to make a few but the only place I was able to make a symlink was to /data/media/0. But the changes to that do not show up the apps which I believe read either /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. And for my SDcard I can get to it either in /mnt/media/sdcard1 or through /storage/sdcard1.
I tried and succeeded in making a link between /mnt/media/sdcard1/eBooks and /data/media/0/eBooks however the link does not show up in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0 and it does not show up in the apps, leading me to believe that is where the apps read the sdcard from.
If anyone can answer the above two questions or give any other suggestions for maximizing available space on my internal card please let me know.
Thank you!
I think most of your issues could be resolved with Link2SD (under 10 posts, can't post a link to Google Play).
You can also use an app called Foldermount. It's only $.99 ( if I recall correctly) for the unlocked version. This allows you to move any folder to SD card. I like it as it guides you thru the way and will move the data for you as well. Latest version has been updated to allow apps from play store to install properly. Well worth the $1 price.

These solutions did work for me, I am still tweaking to get it the way I like it especially since every time I update my Rom Link2SD has to generate new scripts. I can ready and write to the SD card just fine and I could before I started using this as well. I am not sure why you aren't able to write to your sd card. Could it be a bad SD card? Try plugging it into your computer.
I've tried 2 different SD cards both of which I can move files to and from on my computer. So I know it's not the card. I'm thinking maybe I should exchange it out for another day one...

Well, if you did it from your PC, it may be formatted NTFS, and you need them formatted FAT 32. Get it here; http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html Not only allows formatting almost any format xFAT, Fat32, NTFS, etc.. and you can partition them also which is not supported by Windows, but IS supported by most Android ROMs. I doubt there is anything wrong with your device.

I have been trying to fix the issue with Rom updates and link2sd. You have to provide the Rom (in my case cyanogenmod) a backup script so it can back up the files. I am planning on figuring it out at some point but if you get it before I do would you mind posting your script? Thanks!

So a follow up with this, I was able to get a script working. I don't know if this feature is unique to cyanogenmod or not but any script in /system/addon.d will execute itself during a rom install and be restored automatically if it was wiped. So using 50-cm.sh as an example I made a script called 11-link2sd.sh to perform the backup of the mount script for link2sd which is located in /system/etc/init.d/11link2sd.
I then had insert this script and my mount script into a cyanogenmod update and flash it in. But after that I tried flashing an update of cm11 to test it and it worked! Attached is my script which should also work for anyone who is able to flash it into their /system/addon.d folder.

[Q] External SD Card Read-Only Problem

I tried researching this but wasn't successful finding same exact problem or solution. I'm on 4.4.2 Baseband N900TUVUCNB4 rooted with stock rom and ext sd fix. Everything was working fine until recently. My external SD card has inexplicably become read-only, both on the phone and on my desktop. I first noticed this last week when the phone camera began having problems writing to external SD card, and now I can't sync music to card. I've tried formatting on the phone and desktop, both quick and full but no dice. On the phone, I am able to delete individual files or folders but they reappear. On the PC, I can view but get write protect message when trying to format. Anyone else come across this or have suggestions?

Happened with me once with a different phone/OS. Weird thing is that it was only for a particular SD card. I put a different card and it worked.
It turned out to be a problem with the card (dunno how thats possible though).
What's the brand of your SD card?
I have the exact same problem with my SGNote 2 and SanDisk 64gb micro SD card. First I lost some pics I have taken that day. I searched through with a file rescue tool but they were nowhere to be found. Deleted files reappear, and the ones I copied from internal SD dissappear.

It's a SanDisk 64gb class 10.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Maybe we can share the solution when we find one. I'm using internal memory in the meantime for new media files, but frustrated that I am not able to use the rest of the memory available on my card.
SanDisk works fine for me, maybe your sd card is a faulty one, let's wait for a while here and maybe someone could answer your question and hopefully solve your problem

Thanks, Lorettaa. It seems like that's the only option right now, since I can't find any other info about it on XDA. I know Kit Kat has that design "flaw" where apps can't write to an SD card, but I can't even write to it, modify it or reformat it on a PC. I have full read access to every file, just can't do anything else

I have the exact same problem, i tried many options , used some softwares in windows to format , wipe, fix, modify. nothing works.
One possible reason for this problem is file system errors , which can be rectified using the 'error checking' option in windows and 'fixing the file system errors'
But that doesnt solve my problem, even after formatting using advanced softwares, the sd card is the same - no files deleted, no files added...
The fat as well as ext4 parition is not formattable now in anyway.so the possible conclusion is 'sd card is going to fail'.. Take a backup before you loose the read capability.
Recuva is a good, free tool (from the people that make CCleaner) to deleted recover photos.

And one possible reason for a false error condition is a corrupt system. This is normally an unlikely possibility but it is very likely on devices that have had partition images written to (i.e. a flashed ROM). If you have done all you can to the SD card and if the errors are not only on one SD card then wipe everything and load a backup. If you still get errors then wipe everything and revert to stock to see if they still occur.

Hello, I have flashed the JellyKat ROM v5 on my NoteII and got a new sd card (ADATA 32GB) from ebay, the card was sealed so I hope I wasn't cheated, but randomly I see these things in my DCIM folder and I can't write to the card and the phone seems to not read the media on it music photos everything, and I can't install any apps on it or update existing app or even create a folder through the default touchwiz My Files.
I tried to format the card on the PC but can only do quick format because it loads and loads and then say windows can't format this, I also formated it via the phone it worked for a while and then stopped working again, now I don't put a card in the phone.

[Q] External SD Reverting Changes on Reboot

Hi everyone. I've been dealing with this for a few days now and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I'm currently running Wicked S5 Xperience with PhilZ recovery and CWM bootloader. My permissions file is written appropriately to allow apps to write to the external SD, and I manually went into ES File Explorer and changed the permissions appropriately. I'll take a picture, it saves to my external. Ill create a folder on external and it sticks. When I reboot, the folder is gone and the pictures disappear. I've also deleted pictures from the external, and upon reboot they come back. I've unmounted the external when flashing the ROM. I've formatted my internal SD. I've flashed the permissions file, tried Play Store apps, and manually editing the permissions.xml. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why this is happening. It's like my phone is forgetting what happened on the external when I reboot...
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Has this happened with other ROMs as well? Like Wicked X or Tribute? Have you flashed any AOSP ROMs lately? Have you tried another external SD card to see if it may be a bad card?
Well I was on Pac which was AOSP and the permission changes didn't make ANY affect at all. ES was saying I didn't have any write permissions on the external no matter what I did. Stock rooted does the same thing as S5 Xperience, even though I'm using the "allowed" Samsung file explorer.
The card worked in the past, it's loaded with pictures and documents. It's a 64 GB SanDisk high capacity... Or whatever it's called... Its been forever since I looked at the card.
I was originally trying to put Wicked X and I got stuck in a boot loop while trying to install the Xposed framework, and the zip deleted itself from my internal storage. I thought I had downloaded S5 Xperience so I downloaded that. Everything installed fine. I'll download X and see of that changes anything, but each time I formatted and reflashed S5 Xperience I've been having the same issue. The users in the S5 Xperience thread gave me some suggestions, but they haven't worked so far.
If you're sure the SD Card itself is good, all I can recomend is odin back to 100% stock then see if the problem persists.

I'm going to reformat the card first before going back to complete stock. I'm sure it has something to do with the way I rooted or something.
It's the card... Its bad. It's not old enough, though, which upsets me...
