So today I saw that 2.3.4 was available via OTA,I download, install it and it fails on the third step...I've deleted bbc iplayer, news&weather and both unlimited apps and I had a backup of every one exept the unlimited apps so I download them from the market, convert them to system apps, but my phone still wont update.
Does anyone have a list of apps that are mandatory for update in 4.0.A UK generic...maybe I deleted more but cant remember.
Or maybe a solution that doesn't involve reflashing and loosing all of my data?
Thanks

The ones on the market arnt the same as the ones we get.
Can you give me the apks or should i search for a system dump?

Why don't you flash the latest uk firmware but de-select "Wipe User Data" then use zergrush method from DoomLord to give yourself root (That's if you haven't unlocked the bootloader)
Doesn't that make your phone force close everything? And the update isnt even that good...

I don't have the .apk's I'm using CM7 sorry But there are a few ways round it....
Use flashtool to flash an older FW, then OTA. Or use flashtool to flash the 2.3.4 rom directly
Ok so I have 3 solutions:
1. I flash 2.3.3 and keep user data, nothing should force close since all data is in the same version.
2. I flash 2.3.4 but I don't know if my phone would force close all the time
3. Someone from the forums gives me those apks and I install them...
I prefer option 3 but i don't know anyone who has 2.3.3 root and TB

I flashed my ion with the latest at&t ICS then root it with bin4ry's method. It installed the superuser and I can uninstalled apps using the flashtool but when I try to uninstall through the phone I can't (tried it with apps then going to app I want to uninstall, instead of uninstall I only get disable). Am I missing a setting? I remembered when I flashed my phone with the international ICS I can simply uninstall all the apps I want.
Thanks in advance and thank you for all the guides and other things that makes this phone fun to use.
Actually even with international firmware there are some apps you can't uninstall through the settings -> apps menu. For those apps use something like root explorer and remove the apk manually in the system/apps folder. That removes it from your phone.

If you are trying to uninstall system or certain preloaded apps you need to use ti-backup from market. The /settings/apps program will only uninstall user apps not system apps

Uninstall Almost Any System App
Have you ever wanted to remove a system app?
To remove a system app you need to have:
1.Rooted Phone
2.Root Explorer(ex.ES File Explorer)
3.Custom Recovery(or ability to reset dalvik and cache)
4.Apps to Remove!
Let´s get started!
0.Make a backup of your phone just in case.
1. Remove the App´s data.Go to Settings/Apps/All/ and select the app. Then Clear Data and Cache.
2.Navigate with root explorer to /System/App/
3.Select the app that you want to delete and delete it!
4.Then Clear Dalvik and Cache(This will remove the app from the apps list)
5.And Voila! You removed a system app!

Do you guys know how to get rid of the "yp local search" from contacts? Also sometimes when I go to my contacts, it tries to retrieve an at&t address book.
Promise this is the last question. Thanks again
As Spec mentioned go to /system/app delete whatever you want by using root explorer or something similar

Hi,
My SXS is lagging too much, specially the contacts. So I was thinking of having a software repair. The problem is, without having custom recovery/Titanium Backup (as I haven't rooted my phone within warranty), I don't know how to make a complete backup. Will the stock Backup and Restore app work as like TB? Any help/suggestion is welcome.
Thanks

You can do that with Sony pc companion

Force GPU rendering I have tried, but is not of much help. Basically when my phone is working well, everything is fine. But suddenly this system wide lag happens, home screen is redrawn multiple times, and specially the contacts/dialler is a mess.
When you say everything will be backed up, do you mean ALL data, including home screen widgets? Game data will be lost, thats ok, the downloaded game files will be there, thats fine. But I am fearful of having to change all settings again.
Uninstalling useless apps is always an option, and I do it from time to time. But if any particular app is causing the lag, that only I will know after a fresh install.
Asking a noob question here, do you think JB update can improve things for me (since its changing the kernel and all)?
I'd start by flashing a stock ftf through flashtool just to redo system stuff if you take this route all you need to do is uncheck wipe data and partition I'd clear cache then try it out. If that doesn't work I'd get a ram viewing application when it lags pop it up and see what's hogging your resources. Have you tried a task killing application? Ik they are frowned upon but if it's a rogue application killing it would stop the lag and point you in the right direction. Try shutting off data maybe an application is trying to connect and Download or upload something often (Facebook?) That's the steps I'd take atleast

Q1. Did you also face same problem (tremendous lag in contacts) in ICS?
Q2. When you say I will lose widgets and app data, setting, are you saying even with the stock backup and restore, I will lose the data?
A bit confused here - Repair my phone option says: Internal storage will be wiped out, but external storage will be intact. So does it mean, in SXS, everything will be deleted? Or my "Internal SD card" (or whatever it is called) will be as it is? Please help, really confused
Yes until now I have some lag in contacts
And stock backup and restore app doesnt backup ur data when u restore your apps u will find them stock without your data
If u do a factory reset everything will be wiped like apps and data but u can backup the apps without their data
Or use titanium backup
For me I change my Rom nearly every 2 wks but I always return back to stock bcz its the most stable and have lots of beautiful features
I think u have to root its the easiest way to not lose ur data
Cheers

The only thing you Ll lose is apps and settings (you will have your phone back to stock with your own files like music and videos)

You can remove stuff like Xperia Link

Hi...
You can use titanium backup app. It can be used to back up apps. You can remove unwanted stock apps present. Its safe to back up n then remove apps.. hope this helps
Remove/Freeze Apps
You can definitely remove apps from your android device if its rooted. But there's a possibility that you might require those apps sometime in the future, so if space isint a problem for you, i'd advise you to freeze those apps. Freezing those apps can be done through LINK2SD app, which can be found in the play store. You can just click on the app select actions and select freeze. This will prevent the app from running/executing. But will remain installed on your phone. So its as good as "deleting" the app. But whenever required, you can just go back, and unfreeze the app and start using it from where you left it. This is a method i prefer more because you never know when you might need an app. And you needn't even reboot for changes to take effect.
If you're bent on uninstalling a system app, then you can use Titanium Backup or ES File Manager (Both of which are found in play store).
I personally have freezed the following apps... They consume RAM in the background and are of little value to me...
Devices, Drag&Share, Email, Exchange Services, Google Play Magazines, Screen Mirroring, Smart Connect, Sony Select, Xperia app Share, Xperia Calendar Sync, Xperia FB Setup, Xperia Friends Music, Xperia FB Proxy, Xperia Twitter Proxy, Xperia Social Engine Photos FB, Social Engine Picasaweb, Xperia Social Engine Sharing, Xperia Twitter Setup.

Many thanks everybody for your fast replies.
First of all, alvinhochun, I apologize. I'm very sorry, it seems I am more noob than I'd thought. It will not happen again, "I hope". Antrikos48, thank you for your advice.
vivek p08, I've already installed Titatunium. At this moment I'm trying to learn how to make a complete backup of my device to my pc instead of the sd card. I want to backup the rom or firmware as well (I don't know the difference). It is just to prevent just in case I brick my phone. I've read it is necessary to revival the phone. (flash it with the original factory set up).
ckrishnakanthc, thank you for your clear and detailed explanation. I wonder if it would be possible to freeze apps, using settings-application- open the app an disable. I've read that LINK2SD app, is very useful to move things to the sd card, too. Actually, I'm trying to get more ram memory. I'm reading and leaning more about all this stuff. Finally, I'll try to swap Internal Memory to External following the guide in the forum. In the meanwhile, I'll begin to freeze apps and back up the entire phone (rom -firmware). Then, I'll start working on swap internal memory to sd card. I'll try to get more ram. I don't know if it is necessary to make sd card partition to get it. But first of all, I should understand what it means xd.
FYI some people posted FTF (firmware) files on the forums but if you want your own use clockworkmod. If you need help swapping the storage I can help you as I've already done it.

Thank you very much for your offer, I would appreciate your help a lot. Firstly, I'm going to to make a copy of my FW. I've downloaded a C1905 15.1.C.1.17 aerialus indo FW. Now, I'm going to use clockworkmod,to backup my FW, as you recommend me . My next step, will be swap the memory though I really scare to brick my phone
Try the commands on a terminal emulator first before making them on boot. That way there's no way of bricking or reboot looping. Just make sure you have full root.

Hi. Antrikos48, Although, I look forward to be able to do all this, for the moment, I don't have enough knowledge. It gives me a little shame, but I'm still trying to understand how to make the backup with clockworkmod. I do not understand the difference between FW and Rom and I don't know what is an emulator. Currently, I'm still trying to find out which apps should I use to backup the phone: ClockworkMod Tether (non-root) or Rom Manager .I'm absolutely messed up. For now, I'll try to get a backup. Again, I thank your offer and all the help you offer me. Perhaps, you could help telling me what to read first, which post, etc.
Thanks

Use Titanium Backup to backup your apps.
Terminal Emulator I was referring to.

Lol, yeah Disable function too works pretty much the same way, but you should understand that
1. A downloaded app cannot be disabled. For example, if you have downloaded Subway Surfers, or some such app, it can be Force Stopped, or Uninstalled. You cannot Disable.
2. Not all pre-installed apps can be disabled, for example you'll notice that you can go to settings>apps>all and you can disable themes and many others, but you cannot disable stuff like about playstation certified, etc..

Well, to understand if you can easily remove applications from your ROM or not depends on few things. Firstly if you want to remove a system app or a normal app. In case of system app, you will need ROOT to perform the action. Secondly, even removing bloatware can brick your phone and you will need to reflash firmware. This is because the ROM usually share files between system and user. So one program might be using system files too and removing that could damage your system files resulting in bricked phone. For that, first you will need to deodex your ROM. This simply means that your all applications would be stand alone and there would not be sharing between them. So removing one program would not affect any at all.
I would prefer to remove bloatware with titanium backup after my ROM is deodexed as it's easier and gives you more control. However, you will need to root your phone!
Good Luck
Hnk1 you started to shed some light on the debranding issue. Some questions to go farther with your explanation: 1) is it possible to check if the ROM is already deodexed ? 2) why I should have more control removing bloatware with Titanium ? If I select the "wrong" app and I remove it the problem is the same regardless how I removed it

To wonder, if you have selected the normal file or not, this will come with experience and how ROM works.
I have even removed keyboards, camera, notes application, dialer and still my ROM booted. The files which are not in the app drawer are usually the files you must not remove unless you know about them ( like keyboards, extensions of facebook, picassa twitter or any other application which can be removed)
In Titanium backup, you can simply select which file you want to remove and you can even make a backup in case you need them later. You can also just freeze the app, in which case it will be installed but it wouldnot be functional at all. You wouldnot see it in app drawer even.
Remember to clear dalvik with titanium backup after deleting apps (esp system ones), this will free some extra space in Internal memory.
Good Luck
Antrikos48 & Hnk1, thanks for your directions.
To be honest, Hnkl, your "Good Luck" doesn't give me a lot of wish to go ahead in the process. Just in case...I guess that when you say "brick the phone" you mean "having a boot loop"; in this case, being routed but without a recovery (still with my bootloader blocked), which should be the procedure (if exists) ? Could you please just point me to the wright direction ?
