Best modem for Miami (Kendall) area/wake lock issue? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I live in the Kendall area of Miami and data speeds are terrible. Currently, I'm running the latest PACman ROM made by Sniper and the FI27 modem. However, the awful data speeds are not my biggest concern. I'm having some horrible wake locks and I'm beginning to think the modem could be the culprit. Here's what I mean:

Mines dropped...may go back to FD12 if my real words speeds have slowed. I never had a issue getting a 3g signal anyway...
First 3 are FD12
Last 3 are FD02

Data issues w/ CM10 builds

I would really like to use the AOSP builds as a daily driver. I've been using Cyanogen for what feels like ages, but with my GSIII I can't get a good data signal at all. I've tried several versions and the same issue. ( LG8 ) I go where I've gotten insane speeds on my stock ROM. With CM I'm getting no love at all.

I believe it saves battery on CDMA only if not in LTE market, it's not looking for an LTE signal that way.
Regurgitated From My Giant Note II

Really bad battery drain.

Anyone know what's going on here please and any pointers on what I can do to remedy?

Google Auto Backup. At least for me - I was in a bad area (little to no data reception) and "Google+" ate my battery alive trying to back up the video I took.
