My screen does not turn on. I can turn the phone on though, and I know it's on because I can use screencast via Droid Explorer.
Is there a way to go back to stock before I turn it in for a device exchange?
Pull the battery and reinsert it. Hold (home)+(vol-)+(pwr), this will get you into download mode, from here you can flash one of the stock ROM ODIN. Unfortunately you will still have a tripped flash counter, but with a non functioning screen it wont matter.

did you try to change your boot animation by any chance?
whenever i try to change my boot animation my screen will not power on and I'm forced to do a recovery
No, I did not try to flash a bootanimation.
It boots, I can see it on my laptop via screencast.
What happens when you pull the battery, reinsert the battery, hold down (home)+(volume down)+(power) buttons, then when you see "Warning!!" release all buttons and press (volume up) button? Can you see anything on that screen at this point?
You should see the "Download Mode" screen. That is where Odin or Kies can download into and flash your device.
If you can't see anything from that point then this is a hardware problem and not a firmware issue.
Did you drop, get wet, sit on it, something dropped on it, got ran over it, give this to a young child that could of damaged it, etc...? Those may cause the hardware problem. At that point the device will need to be repaired or replaced.

It is a hardware issue, which is why I want to return it to stock before sending it in.
The screen is completely dead. It boots into recovery, download mode, and normal boot.
I did not drop it or get it wet, which is weird.

So my power button all of a sudden broke. It won't turn off or on, the only way to power the phone off is to pull the battery and it turns back on by itself as soon as I put the battery back in. Doesn't anyone have any ideas? I've already done a factory reset, didn't change anything. Also, it doesn't work to select anything in recovery. So my 2nd question is if anyone can tell me how to flash the stock sprint rom so I can take it in and get it fixed?
.
Use the ruu it will run in windows
Same thing happened to my phone. Damn cheap power button. Was waiting for cm6 to work with the new version hardware. Now that it does I will be doing the same.
What I have been doing as a work around is using widget locker to remap the power button to the volume key. And have a screen off widget. I don't mind it but can't do anything in recovery either anymore. So I am gonna take mine in this weekend. I believe they will give you a replacement phone.
FYI - I got thinking that maybe it wasnt a hardware issue but maybe software - and it would have to be something higher up than the recovery system. Anyway, the button started working again and while it was I flashed a new HBoot thinking that maybe it was a corrupted driver or something. It seems to have fixed it, but YMMV.

You can use the ruu to restore our but it will most likely still show s-off in the bootloader. You can fix that by using adb in recovery mode to flash unrevoked forever while in the recovery

So i was flashing a new AOKP rom with cwm 6.0.1.0. My phone dropped and the battery fell out. it only dropped like one foot, not enough to break just enough to cause the back to pop off and the battery to fall out. Now my phone is a complete ****. It didnt turn on at first. Then it finally did but cut off after about five minutes. Now it wont turn on. Occasionally you will see the battery charged logo that appears when your phone is completley off and charging. And occasionally it will start to turn on but never make it past the bootlogo. neither is enough time for me to try and flash or wipe or use adb to restore. It seems to be somethingw ith the battery. There is the smallest crack in the screen so i cant return under warranty. Please say someone knows whats wrong
I believe (and someone with more knowledge would have to correct me if im wrong) but if the screen is able to turn on then that means that you are completely screwed. Your phone isnt hard bricked but soft bricked. If you can get into the bootloader then you should be able to use fastboot commands or the toolkit to get yourself back to stock or flash a recovery and new rom onto your phone.

Can you get to the bootloader? Turn your phone off, hold down the Vol Down and Power button.
If you get to the bootloader, you can flash your ROM again and you'll be fine.

no ic ant boot into that. i already tried, it wont stay on for no more than ten seconds no matter what i try to boot into. when plugged into the computer (without battery where it should install the omap driver) it just connects and disconnects every three seconds.
When I plug my phone into my a charger and it is charging my phone gets stuck into a bootloop where I can't turn it off nor turn it on. It wont even go to the Samsung logo, it just is black and keeps turning on/off. Only way I have to get around this is by unplugging, pulling battery, reboot recovery, plug back in, then I can reboot to system. Any ideas on a solution to this?

Don't try to power it on while plugged in. Ain't much else to suggest there. I find doing the button combo for download mode then pressing vol-dn at the warning screen works too. This is the normal it's not a bootloop. The way these charge w/ the power off is strange.

What recovery and rom are you using? This is not a normal behavior. It doesn't happen on my phone using Stock rom/TWRP recovery.

That's weird as I'm on my 5th s3 since 6-21 and this has been normal behavior on every one regardless of rom. The S2 did the same stupid shiit. Its almost impossible to turn these on while plugged in and shut off.

I usually use freeg3 from Clark, but I flash about every ROM when they are updated to try it out; I use TWRP to flash them all. My phone is infected with anthrax, but It was before and after it. I even tried flashing the stock .tar from odin :/
When the screen is black, simply hold the power button in until you see the Samsung logo.

I just confirmed again that my phone doesn't do that. With the phone on, I plugged into the charger. Power off, wait until the green battery icon appears. Hold power button, phone boots normally.
I'd guess somewhere along the way you acquired a wonky bootloader. You could probably try just replacing the bootloader, I know there is a way to do that but I'm not sure how. Probably someone else could quote the procedure off the top of their head. If not, I would guess a full odin to stock would fix it also.
My phone does this too. Sometimes it shows a charging battery, sometimes it vibrates, and sometimes I even see the Samsung logo, but it always refuses to turn on while it is plugged up.
My phone doesn't do this. It looks to be a hit or miss on if your phone will do it.

Or it could have to do with a particular flash that has corrupted the boot loader. People need to be clear what roms they are on, and if they have ever tried to go back to FULL stock through Odin to fix this. Until they have reflashed the Stock Bootloader, there is no way to know what's going on.
So, my Galaxy S3 suddenly shut off on me, so I tried to reboot it, and it would just say "Galaxy s3" then nothing would show. So I figured it was a software brick and I can just restore a backup. When I tried to access Recovery Mode, it would show that its trying to boot into Recovery, but nothing would happen. So I figured I can just go into Download Mode and restore it through ODIN to get all the partitions working again. It would go to Download Mode for a few seconds, and then just shut off on me before I can even do anything. Everytime I take out the battery and put it back in, it tries to auto boot, but it never gets passed the Samsung s3 logo. Do you think this is a software or hardware brick? And would any of you know how I should go about fixing this?
Thanks a bunch

I agree, the only way it should turn on when you replace the battery is if power was held down. It would explain everything else you mentioned as well. Try gently knocking it back out. Or if comfortable with it, open the device to have a closer kook.

i'm experiencing a similar issue. I can only get any result while it's plugged in. it wont boot past the second splash screen, I got it into download mode and flashed the stock package from sammobile.com with no change. the phone keeps trying to boot into recovery after flashing stock but it goes to the android with the open chest screen and reboots and tries again over and over. i've taken the phone apart and seen nothing wrong, no corrosion, no water damage and i've even replaced the battery with no success. i tried flashing clockworkmod recovery, the flash was successful but it still wont even boot to recovery. the power button isnt stuck, i can manipulate it when i have the bare motherboard in my hands and still it's fine. would replacing the power switch have any affect? please any thoughts would be appreciated
edit: since flashing stock, plugging the phone into the computer with oem cable causes it to vibrate intermittently. holding power causes it to try recovery mode. running windows 7 with samsung drivers properly installed and adb recognizes my galaxy s2 and captivate no problems. someone mentioned on a post i read about using a 3 part stock rom, modem, pda and phone to flash instead of the all in one tar file, any thoughts?
another edit. this phone has never to my knowledge been rooted or had any kernel/rom flashed onto it. as far as i know it's stock from Wind mobile, 3 months past warranty
Hey there, so my phone randomly decided to stop working today.
Whenever I put the battery in the phone or plug in the charger, the Samsung screen loads then nothing. This all happens without me pushing the power button btw. Then the power button doesn't work, nor can I access recovery.
Like I mentioned, this all happened very suddenly and unexpectedly. I haven't flashed a rom in awhile so I'm not sure what caused the problem. One tidbit worth mentioning is that my phone would randomly reboot on the rom I've been using, but it wouldn't happen too often.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not exactly sure what I should do in this situation. Thanks for reading.

try to be quicker to access recovery, power off the phone. then press the power, vol up, and home then AS SOON as you see the blue text on the left top side of the samsung logo screen let go of the buttons, it should boot into recovery then wipe data factory reset and reboot.

flash this recovery attached with odin by booting into download mode via power vol down and home, wipe data factory reset and reboot
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390212717148635222 (recovery)
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390275921635705049 (odin)
place in pda with only f. reset time and auto reboot checked. it SHOULD only take about 10 seconds to flash. as soon as your phone reboots hold the recovery combo and it should go to it
I can't really access download mode either.
I'll get to the screen that asks if I want to go into download mode, then push the up on the volume rocker, get to the next screen, but then it goes black about a second later.
Thanks for all the help so far though.

kinda odd. never had that happen before. ,maybe you could try to reflash the download mode into your phone using this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2369125(make sure you use a debrick.img http://d-h.st/iEy for att not sprint BTW)
or use a jig. since your phone can still access the boot interface.

Have you done this and then connected the USB to see if ODIN will recognize the phone? it's entirely possible that you are getting into download mode, but just can't see it..
It's certainly worth a try.
