[Q] ExtSD hide - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Is it possible to hide files on the external SD card from certain apps? Primarily video player and photo gallery. I've got little kids in the household that I don't want seeing certain things, if you catch my drift. I searched and couldn't find any way to hide the SD card from those apps, so as soon as you open the app kid-inappropriate thumbnails pop up. If possible I'd like to make those apps not scan the SD card so Iddon't have to worry about letting the kiddos play with the phone. Is this possible?
I'm running Jedi X6.1.2 ROM. Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Kids and phones are a bad combination.
So is porn and phones.

Lol, it's homemade, not downloaded from the net. I was just wondering if there was a way. I'm also usually sitting next to the kids while they use the phone, but I don't want them accidentally getting into the wrong place and seeing something theysshouldn't.

smh.. lol anyways:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.droida.nomedia&hl=en
I have never used an app to hide files from apps. I usually just put a ".nomedia" file in the folder in question. That makes it so no apps except a file explorer can see it.
However, it may be easier to keep track of by using that app. (actually WAY easier)
it looks like the app marks the hidden folder in red so you know which ones are being hidden. That feature alone is enough to make it better than adding a .nomedia

That app puts a .nomedia file into the folders that you select to "hide." Works perfectly! Thanks!

Haha yeah that's what I meant. That's why I referenced the ".nomedia"
Long night..
No problem! I'd rather have you hide the video then have to explain what going on in them to a kid lmao

whenever i try deleting anything ANYTHING or moving anything with RESCO Explorer, it works. its like resco copies the file right before it deletes it so if its in use it continues to be in use until you switch over, then it knows it gone.
i don't really know if that made sense, lmao. it's before eleven, i'm at work, and the damn mcdonalds iced coffee is giving my stomach enzymes the challenge of its life. lmao i'm not really all here right now.

I just bought this phone and I have no idea where to begin. Salesperson was not sure either, so my question is 1) bought memeory card 1g, and was able to store 15 songs, but when I try to sync more it says not enough memory and to delete old files for storage. Okay how do you do that and I was told that 1g card will let me store bout 200 songs, hmmm. Next, browsing enternet explorer, says to close previous pages, like how? I just use it for pleasure, pics, music... but thus far having problems with it all, should i return it before my 14 days are up? Any help will be appreciated, yall!!!

First off welcome to the forum. Second, before you do anything, if you're not sure if you want to keep the phone, you should do some reading before you do any type of alteration or modifications to it. The're is a ton of stuff you can do, and a lot of apps , programs , etc. I hope you didn't spend too much money for that 1g card , cause with a 6.1 rom you can use up to 16gb card. The problem with the reg 6.0 rom is that is full of crap, the only reason is telling you to close previous pages is that you're running out of ram memory, I had the same problem when I first got the phone, but the difference with me is that I bought the phone with the notion that I was going to do a lot of initial work to get the phone where I wanted it to be.
E.G. I got a better rom right away, it took 4 different flashes to find the one I liked, I got a better web browser (opera mini) and did a lot of reading , on how to do all sorts of stuff and learn how to make it my own. Now I got a ton of nice stuff running on my phone. I got a lot of help from a lot of good people here. There's a lot of valuable info on all of the stickies on the top of the main page. SEARCH is your friend. You got to remember that this phone didn't come out yesterday, so if you decide to keep the phone , there's a 99.999 percent chance that someone already asked any question that you might have, so that's why we encourage everyone to search before making threads with stupid questions, that only takes minutes to find an answer. If you still don't find the right answer, you will find the proper thread to ask it. If you decide to keep the phone, ther's a million apps to get, a better music player, video player , weather apps , games , ringtones , automatic wallpaper changer, file changer , change your font , color of such font , backup software, the list goes on and on. Anyways good luck, and I hope my time will help you make a choice.

1) Use the search option here on XDA or Google. I am sure you can find answers for 99.9% of the queries you might have. And if you can not find them at first, you need to try different wording also.
2) Are you sure you are storing them on the memory card and not on the phone memory? How big are the songs? If you rip songs from a CD you might have files that are too big. If you bought a new memory card it should be clean and without anything else, unless you also stored videos, pictures and what not. Something is not 100% clear here. You say you stored 15 songs on the memory card, but then you don't know how to delete them?
3) Don't use Internet Explorer. I use skyfire, its a great browser and I suggest you get it also.

Yeah I love it 'cause I have like 600+ wallpapers on my sd card , so instead of browsing thru them to get one , I make theme packs with them to work with the WPC, place the packs on the WPC wallpaper directory, and the WPC does the rest.

[Q] .hpimage.vfs on root of sd card ?

I swear I did search first, even did a few general Google searches. Ultimately figured I'd try here.
So, my SD card is down to 500mb. I'm trying to clear up some space, and notice a file on the root of the card called .HPIMAGE.VFS. It's about 150mb. I tried to open it with root explorer, but it won't open it. So I long press on it and select 'open as text file', and root explorer force closes.
I Google searched, and found really random and confusing search results for it that made no sense to me.Thought I'd ask here If anyone has ever seen it, or familiar with it. I wanna delete it, but not if Android needs it. Oh, and when I plugged into a pc in mass storage/disk drive to try to open and inspect it, it doesn't show up on my card at all! That's the real kicker
I have no idea what it is and sure as hell don't remember ever downloading something like that.
If anyone knows anything about what this could be, or understands it, please let me know. It'd be much appreciated. Thank you.
Scott,
Do you happen to have (or have used that card in) a HP all-in-one printer? The .HPIMAGE.VFS file is a collection of thumbnails generated by the printer. That way when you put the card in the printer, it doesn't have to re-do the thumbnails and slow down scrolling through the pictures.
If you are not worried about the thumbnails (since the printer will regenerate the file), you can go ahead and remove it from your SD card. There is also an option in the preferences menu of the printer to stop the thumbnails from being generated.
Hope this helps.

Nivron, thanks so much man. I knew if I posted this here, at xda, someone far more tech savvy than myself would have some idea. Yeah, the search results I got did appear to indicate something about HP printer, and thumbnails, but also seemed to indicate a lot of confused people. (Like myself). I couldn't think of a time I used a printer (if in fact it was related to that). But your post jogged my memory enough that now I do remember I did exactly that on Halloween. Thanks so much man.
And toast, since it turns out this is entirely unrelated to Android or winmo, and by extension, xda, please feel free to delete. I love xda.
Again, thank you.
Glad you figured it out! XDA is a great place for info, indeed!

Really clever and useful app.
I've only used it to hide apps on friends' Androids, once I've configured them.
They're new to Android and want the simplest experience they can get, with all the benefits.
It's a shame that you cant hide Minimalistic Text and Desktop Visualizer, and still have them run on the homescreen though. Hidden apps won't always run in the background (as warned in the app).
I hope it continues to develop - it's definitely worth al look for anyone who is not aware of it's potential.
I love the fact that it actually operates as an audio manager. Excellent disguise.
I'm using it since a few month. Save with tb. Restore after flashing a new rom. You just have to hide app again. Great app. Bugless.

hey buddy if you go on your phone and in the search you put Hide Pro that will be the first thing it will come up..download it and enjoy the app. but if you want the link just let me know and i give it to you
Been using it for ages now and its quite good, easy to use etc.
The only problem is it doesnt truly hide the pictures, files etc you want hidden. It simply moves them somewhere else with the old . trick before the folder name. Anyone who is familiar with android phones will know how to find them with root explorer.
Ive been searching but cant find an app that truly hides it. Back in the days when i was on Windows mobile 6.5, there was an app "Hide my stuff" and believe me, it did just that. Connect your phone to the PC, the folder exists but its blank in size, no files, cant unhide them etc. Only way to view them is via the app on the phone but i cant find anything on Android that hides things like that app did :-(

Dont think you follow me, dont get me wrong, ive used for 6 months easy and it is good for what it does.
What i mean is that it doesnt matter what ROM youre using, it doesnt truly hide the files you think are hidden. ie/ if i had your phone, i would be able to find the files easily so if the average person took your phone, whatever pictures you hide, arent seen in the gallery for example however its easy to find anything you have hidden if you get my drift. This is because the app moves the files somewhere else. Any file explorer can see them so its not really hidden. go to /mnt/sdcard/programdata/android/language/.fr/ and everything hidden is there so i wouldnt call that hidden lol
The other app i mentioned when i was using windows TRULY hid the file and there was no way you could ever find it unless you unhid it with the app, hope that makes sense.
I was just putting it out there if anyone knew of an app on Android that truly hides files, i havent found one yet.

Much appreciated. I hope you have better luck then me because ive been looking for ages and to date, this one is one of the better ones. The way it functions, ease of use, menu etc is great, i just wish it truly hid something.
Most on the market just put a . in front of the folder, with file explorer its easily viewed.
If you are ever bored, hide some pictures you dont want anyone to see, go to a photo shop where you can use the self service machines to print photos, put your phones SD/micro SD card in there and whatever you have hidden appears lol.
When i used this other app on windows it wouldnt appear

Il give you a buzz if something comes up..In the meantime im having a bloody rough time putting a link in my sig and its not bloody working and ihave tried everything i know
I'm using this app since the beginning. It's a great app. it had already saved my life lots of time !!!
It's really great for the money !
Hidden files are renamed in .bin, and then are moved to a "secret folder" in External_sd\ProgramData\Android\Language\.fr\ or something like that.
The add-on option is a way to lock an application. When you try to launch a protected app, you've got a force close message. in this message you choose report, then you have to input your secret code, and the app is launched...really clever solution.
Developer say that his next goal is to hide some secrets contacts from address book.
Yes man, believe me, it's a great app. hidden in a audio manager application.
PS 1: I have nothing to do with the developer. I've try lot of similar apps, but this one was the best one.
The other solution was giving by Tasker and some intelligent script to lock app and hide files. But it's more more complicated ;-)
PS 2: On the bad side, developer did not update his app for a while :-(

This one encrypts files
Try Private Gallery - Hide Pictures from market.
It encrypts files with option to hide app access via phone dialer.
Tested on Dell Streak 5.
I am using this app since 4 months.. it simply does what it says.. n it was one of the best
but the last update killed 'Lock App' feature which comes with an plugin... which is one of a kind..i love the disguised force close option.
Please tell me if this feature is still working for you'll???
Hi everyone,
I've managed to hide apps but I can't unhide them? It gives me an error when trying to do so and the app appears back in the hidden list.
Anyone else experienced this and managed to fix it?
Since the location of hiden files are stored in Phone memory (\ProgramData\Android\Language\.fr) can we move to External SD Card memory?
I often confuse with the terms "SDCARD" in file explorer, in my opinion "sdcard" is the external memory card which is purchase separately...
This app appeared on my phone without being installed. What caused this???
thanks for share:good:

[Q] Windows 7 Not Seeing Hidden Files/Folders

Have had my Note II for a couple of days now. When I connect my phone to my computer and go into Windows Explorer I can see the "Card" and the "phone" and I can see files and folders on both. What I cannot see is any hidden folders/files (i.e. those that begin with a period).
I was able to see hidden folders on my old Galaxy S under Windows, but not the Note 2 for some reason.
I can, however, see the hidden files using "File Manager" from the google play store.
I have tried reinstaling the drivers (v1.5.14 and v1.5.16) several times. No help.
Have tried turing debug mode on and installing drivers. Nope.
Tried turning debug mode off and installing drivers. Nada.
Obviously, I am missing something somewhere. Any hints?
turn on view hidden folders in win 7
It's on. If I take the SD card out of my phone and put it in the pc, launch Explorer, the hidden (.) files and folders show up just fine.
If I put the SD card back in the phone, connect the phone to the computer, launch Explorer, I cant see the hidden files.
why do you need to see them natively in the phone?
there is nothing there that you should need to mess with...
Do you suppose it might be that the phone is not rooted?
yes, that is probably why..but, once again, what are you looking for that you need to see in the hidden folders/files?
Have a couple of directories on my SD card that I dont want scanned for photos/music,etc. Have a .nomedia file in those directories (I think) but they are still showing up in my pictures on my phone. Also, I have a directory from my old phone (.Fav.Apps and .eMail.History) that I wanted to be able to get to from my PC. I wound up just renaming the .Fav.Apps to _Fav_Apps and .eMail.History to _eMail_History which allowed me to see the directories. But still cant see the .nomedia files. Guess I'll just root the phone with ChainFires root and see what happens. Thanks.

Download winrar....
Then use it's interface to see any files you want ...
Including those files that will nuke your phone if desired ...
Tread lightly in there unless you are sure of what your doing...

"turn on view hidden folders in win 7"

Seriously guys, do you even understand the problem/question OP asking at all?
"Download winrar....
Then use it's interface to see any files you want ..." - WHAT??? WinRAR won't even see the phone at all!
You remind me of phone tech support who uses cards to "give support" and have no clue what you talking about.
By default THE PHONE doesn't show all the files because it connected as media server (MTP or PTP), that's why it might requires a driver, unlike usb mass storage type that doesn't.
If you need see all files you'll need another program such as Droid Explorer on computer or usb mass storage app on phone. Neither of them is perfect, the app for example only allows mount SD card, but not internal storage.
I got the files needed. I zipped the folder with the files i needed then transferred the zip file to my other phone and it worked.

"Do you suppose it might be that the phone is not rooted?"

Thanks for the insult ...much appreciated ....and I'm sorry to say that you are in fact wrong about not only my post...but the abilities of a program you must not spend a lot of time with..
My conscience is clear ...but I'm not so sure about a few others in this thread....g
Edit: read and learn....
Winrar is possibly one of the best file viewers/managers there is...and operates within the windows environment..
Now where did I put those pesky flash cards that my boss gave me when I hired on yesterday...
Oh...and pay particular attention to the portion of the article that explains the viewing of hidden files from within a mass storage device...and the ability to repair them in place as well...
I'm not opposed to being criticized...but I am opposed to being called incompetent ...which I clearly am not...g

Ok, I admit, I was harsh and yes, you can use WinRAR to view WINDOWS hidden files, and only on mass storage devices, which by the way I don't see where this topic switched directly to mass storage as you trying to claim it has)
However you seem to fail understand the difference between windows hidden files and android as what the OP is having problems with. They are different things in most cases and WindRAR would not help at all, especially if you use your phone to see the files, not a card reader.
