Hi all,
I have purchased an xperia s and intend to install custom ROM tomorrow. I have done a good bit of reading but theres alot of info.
I believe roms based on lastest JB eg cm10? dont have a functioning camera
I believe 1 or more roms based on cm9? does not have a functioning hdmi?
The camera (and hdmi) is important to me. I would prefer to have a modded "hardware" rather than an app such as the cybershot one (I assume an app means the improvements are only seen when in that app).
The only camera hardware mod i can find is "[MOD][CAM]GBXperia S|Video 1080p >20mb Bitrate|720p >15mb Bitrate|>100% Image quality".
This requires 2.3.7.
I would be grateful if someone could point out (via link or name) a 2.3.7 based rom, and kernel, as simple and clean as possible (no bloatware) that has a better performance than stock and would allow me to use this mod. Of course, if i have missed a later/better ROM with optimised camera let me know
Thanks for reading and hope someone can advise, I realise im more of a lurker
CM10 has a functioning camera, however I prefer the stock camera (SONY).
About HDMI, i'm not sure about it, I have no HDMI TV for me to play on, however user reported that it worked (in CM10 thread)
About the camera hardware mod you mentioned, it already included (implemented) in the ICS update if I'm not mistaken, therefore if using stock ICS ROM, the MOD is included.
I do not try other MOD ROM, I just tried AOKP JB and FXP CM10, for me, I like CM10, has the latest function on Jelly Bean.
Wish SONY can release the update asap. haha
If you want CM10 based ROM, install Nova Xperia RC1 and update its kernel to 007. That ROM is great, I didn't find any bugs, except that the camera doesn't record in 1080p.
If you want a stock based ROM install XTXperience v7 and Advanced Stock Kernel... It's based in the latest official Sony firmware and it has the look of Xperia T or GX, all depends of your taste
I'd recommend you try PAC ROM.
HDMI isn't as well supported in AOSP than the Stock ROM. In CM9 and CM10, it works and puts out a 1080p 30 Hz signal, but is noticeably laggy. Watching movies works ok-ish, Vsync problems are noticeable though and some frames are dropped because of this - way more fluid on a stock ROM, which lets you select different output modes as well via the service menu (I choose 720p60). AOSP also only has the option of sending out the video layer of Hardware-decoded video directly, meaning true 1080p, but no overlays including soft subtitles. Stock offers both, 1080p output or mirroring of the 720p screen, which makes soft-subs on HW-decoded video possible.
As for the camera, Panorama is broken in CM10, and video recording is 720p max, otherwise it works fine.
If these are no issues for you, go for a CM10 based ROM - more customizable. Otherwise pick a stock-based ROM.
I have the Acro S by the way, but that phone has the same camera. The HDMI issues are universal in AOSP ROMs and almost all Stock ROMs for most phones - Sony are as far as I have seen the only ones to bother optimizing the HDMI output and offering some options for it on their phones.
Thread closed. Unfortunately "what ROM", "best ROM" type threads aren't encouraged on the forums as everyone's opinion differs and what one person may tell you another will disagree with so the only way to find out what's best and meets your requirements is to try some for yourself. Most, if not all ROM threads should have a changelog with what's working/not working so you'll be able to rule out any that don't have what you need and those that don't state issues may just not have had anyone report them.
Thanks

Hello Guys!
I've testing about one week some ROMs and kernels combinations, and many things has worked on many of them, like the camera, panorama, wifi, etc... But I see the ICS Camera Video effects working only on the AokPlay V3.1 + DoomKernel, and also, I really liked this ROM. Unfortunately, I can't get WiFi and Video playback working on this combination . I even tried a fix that xRegrets had posted, but I think it's for a old build...
Now I'm using DooMKernel + Hybrid evolution V 5.3.1, and almost everything that I tested is working, as it's Sony ICS Beta based, but the video effects I can't get to work... I look for some fix to it, but I didn't found nothing..
So, the question is, there's some way to get the camera video effects working on the Sony ICS Beta or some Sony ICS Beta based ROM?
About the AokPlay, I didn't found a new WiFi fix for DooMLord's kernel and even installing the wifi modules I can't get it to work, and I read on DooMKernel thread that's the video playback doesn't work for the differents video drivers, so... It's too bad .
And I tried the Keiran's kernel too on the AokPlay, but with the new release the Wifi is not working
Anyone know if it is possible to get the JB camera to work in ICS? If so, any tips on how to do it?
I want features the camera offers, but all JB ROMS seem to have a lot of people that have battery issues. I"m on the on in my sig at the moment, and battery just is not settling down for me.
if you're talking about the TouchWiz camera that's on Jellybean (the version of the camera in Serenity ROM), then i'm afraid that i'm pretty sure there isn't any difference in the camera software, except that the Note 2's camera added the slow/fast motion recording for video and such as well. If you use a Jellybean ROM based off of a leaked Galaxy S3 build of JellyBean, it doesn't have those features, either.

Actually, there is one difference that is the particular reason I am using hte JB ROM (which battery sucks on): When recording video, you can pause the recording and restart it. The other cameras do nto have this, and if you have a period you don't want to record, you must stop and restart, ending up wiht videos you must stitch together.
Well, I guess I'll just need to wait for the official JB for the SGS III. I've been on Serenity for a few weeks, but it's starting to give me trouble. Going back to Ariel.
Hi everyone,
I am considering 'upgrading' my HOV to CM10.1 or AOKP, but I am wondering if the new mods really effect the quality of the onboard camera? I know that the One series all has the HTC imagesense processor, and I was wondering if the newer kernels affected the quality of the camera at all? I enjoy the quality of the camera on stock greatly, so I was wondering if there was a big difference or if anyone did any comparisons?
Thanks!
ps - sorry if this has been asked before, I've searched and come up with nothing...
Stock camera is the best. It's the only reason why some people revert back to stock after trying out JB
stock camera > cm9 > cm10 > cm10.1 even tho cm10.1 camera doesn't work yet... lmao

I didn't quite get it.
I am wondering, does JB roms use HTC's ImageSense? If not, does those Sense based ROMs use ImageSense, as they use the stock camera, right?

The non-Sense based ROM's don't use the ImageSense chip ( or use it in the same way as stock ). I've Tried SupremU and mySenseV both seem to use the stock camera app and abilities. The CM10/etc use the cyanogen(?) camera, it cannot do the burst or capture during video, I had very little luck getting it going smoothly in CM10, video modes autofocus is wonky too
I did some searching to see if the Stock camera app could somehow be brought into CM10, but from what I could find it appears that the answer it no.. my guess is it's a kernel module needed + a bunch of Sense bits and pieces.
to me the quality seems about the same, but I have noticed that non-stock cameras on our HOV are slower at actually taking the picture, but that could be the settings? idk but I like stock camera, but not enough to switch back to sense... mostly because it makes me use a pin or passcode or pattern to unlock because of the wifi type at my school... it gets annoying

So, when i use this ROM?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974415
I have ImageSense in use, as it has the stock camera app, right? (which is the best for me) I really like ImageSense, autofocus in video is great with it and pictures too.

Yup that you do It's the one I've been running this week and it appears to be going quite smoothly.
I'd love to have panorama and HDR, I tried a ROM last month that had the options (I think it was a sense ROM) but they didn't work well and it force-closed sometimes, etc.
I've also found that some of the newer android version ROMs seem to lack either H.264 or 720p video.
Front-facing camera is nice to have, but even the ROMs with that seem to suck for Skype.
Help!
You can download both of them from the play store... I have both and they work great..

Why is that? What binary blob needs reverse-engineered?

wait, that's not true. I'm running cyanogenMod 6.2.1 and I have 720 video
how jerky is it? (i dont just mean playback on the phone itself, i mean no matter what device you play it back on. in other words, when i use AOSP cameras at 720p, there is jerkiness baked into the output. stutter, judder, jerkiness, dropped frames, insufficient fps, call it what you want, motion portrayal is poor especially during slow pans.)

hmm, yeah i guess it is a little jerky.
Well thanks for the link in your sig, got that ROM running now and it seems like a keeper
Well, ok, if you're serious about all this, I will add that changing your scheduler to BFQ is probably the single best improvement you can make to videocam recording smoothness. You'll need a kernel that supports this. Almost any custom kernel will. If you're going to use the ROM in my sig (the Captain's 5.07 stock ROM) I would recommend the "Underworld" kernel. If you're running a AOSP ROM , I'm not as familiar with those choices (although I would recommend Reloaded anyway, and the "Mason" kernel included with it supports BFQ already, even if it isn't optimal for general, non-videocam performance). Note you'll have to do additional research on how to *activate* the BFQ scheduler even once you have a kernel that supports it. Or maybe you knew all this. But others may be interested. Happy searching..
used hdr camera + with cm7.2 (nightlies) and worked pretty fantastic. Def considered it better quality than stock camera and here is my disclaimer im not a photo buff... lol
In my opinion the Sense Rom Cameras look better. I've probably ran just about every rom on the OG EVO and that is what I have noticed.
Hi I was wondering if someone has a fix, when I use a custom ported rom of TouchWiz, the quality is perfect, but when I install a custom stock rom, the quality seems to be 480p even when on source.
