[Q] rooting after encryption. - dangerous? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I'd like to get root on my ATT Galaxy S3 which I have upgraded to JB, and I have read the excellent thread in the development section::
[HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel]
I'd like to flash the following image:
Current I747UCDLK3 (JB 4.1.1) - NEW JellyBean
BUT my phone has already (unfortunately) been encrypted due to requirements to access my corporate email.
If I flash using this method (Odin/rooted JB image) is this dangerous? I'm worried that the bootloader going to think the phone is encrypted but the partitions won't be? Anyone been successful doing this?
thanks a bunch.

I have never encrypted then rooted, but I have rooted then encrypted. No negative effects until I wanted to flash a new ROM. Then, all hell broke lose. I had to flash stock using Odin, wipe sdcard. I think its safe if you just want to root.. but don't take my word for it.

Root ?

Will the method described here [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Updated [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers]Share Thread:
work with a phone that is already rooted under 4.0.3 or must the phone first be un-rooted? Thanks.
Its an Odin flash, so it rewrites everything. You can use it, but if your already rooted, why would you want to reroot?
I rooted under the original UCLEM 4.0.3 so if I can re-root directly it saves the effort to un-root to stock before re-rooting to stock with root. Does that make sense?
Not to me, but that's not abnormal for me.
Since I don't have enough posts to post in the Dev. forums I would like to thank mr Robinson here for the excellent tutorial and necessary files to root my S3 stock. Thanks man you are exceptioal.
FYI: I rooted over a previous CWM root with no issues. Used an old charge/data cable from my previous Palm Pre+ which worked fine. The firmware is now listed as Official not Custom and the flash counter has gone from 3 to 2.
Fwiw, Triangle Away will reset your flash counter, should you ever need to return for warranty.
Thanks again for the information re: Triangle Away.

[Q] Questions about the new 4.3 ROM: downgrading, KNOX and others

Hi there, I'm about to flash the brand new official 4.3 ROM in my Note 2 N7105. I've read some concerns about KNOX and it changing the bootloader and making impossible to downgrade, it that true?
If I flash this new 4.3, can't I reflash the 4.1.2 ROM using a nandroid backup, or even with Odin?
What about using 3rd party ROMs, would I still be able to do it as I do now? Any risk of EFS / IMEI problems? I am currently using both the 4.1.2 and CM 10.3.1 (I alternate frequently using nandroid backups with CWM), don't know if it's worth the risk of upgrading to the official 4.3 right now before knowing this and if CF-AutoRoot can root the 4.3 ROM.
Note: I don't care about warranty and KNOX at all, if those are the only issues.
It is fairly simple - if you flash 4.3 with Knox, you can't ever again flash any other custom ROM without loosing Knox. What it means is that, once you flash anything else, Knox will burn something inside your chip - and this is irreversible - and it will know your device has been modded. And you can never again use Knox.
If you don't care about Knox - this is no issue....

I flashed with Odin and lost WiFi. I tried to install a patch from another thread, but it seems that doesn't work on for the N7105, as I lost my IMEI and the phone doesn't get signal. I have an EFS backup, gonna try downgrading to 4.1.2 and restore the EFS (it doesn't allow me to do it on 4.3, it says that "a dangerous action has been blocked").
Help, I can't get my IMEI back, it seems that the EFS backup was useless Have I bricked my phone? I think it hasn't really lost the IMEI, it just forgot how to search for it, because I installed the wifi correction .bin file for the n7100. Any help?
good questions.. waiting for replys?

Managed it:

Now I will stay away from the 4.3 ROM, because I can't make WiFi work with it.

[Q] Selling phone...need help please!

I am selling my S3, and I have been out of the loop for quite a while because I've had a Nexus 5 for the past few months. My S3 is rooted, unlocked, and running Cyanogen 4.2.2. I had AT&T give me the unlock code a while back, so its unlocked.
My question is, how do I go about restoring the phone to stock, without loosing my carrier unlock? I dont care about losing root, but I sold the phone as "unlocked" so its pretty important I keep that.
Does flashing another rom effect the unlock status at all?
Once a phone is unlocked. Its unlocked permanently no matter what you do to it. I would suggest restoring back to stock 4.1.2 after running triangle away to reset flash count. Then sell it and let the nre owner choose If he wants to update to the new 4.3 if they want

Restoring to stock would depend on what firmware it was on prior to the custom ROM installation. If it was already on 4.3, then a restoring stock 4.1.2 would not be an option. Also, you may not be able to find a stock image for 4.1.2 flashable via Odin as the only route to 4.1.2 -after OTA- is via a manual update from stock 4.1.1. Therefore, if it wasn't already on 4.3, the best option may be to flash stock 4.1.1 via Odin. The required files and instructions may be found here ... http://fortedge.com/downgrade.html
A correct factory unlock (e.g. via carrier assigned unlock code) would indeed survive all firmware changes.

[Q] New User! Please tell me if I got this right about 4.3!!!

Hi, I just got my Galaxy s3 today from virgin mobile (SPH-L710) already updated to 4.3. I really want to flash custom ROMs, and I was reading the forums about the rooting and custom recoveries, and please correct me if I am wrong in any of the steps so i don't mess up my lovely new S3!
--K1mu found a method for safe rooting, meaning the Knox will not be flagged, and once we get root we can disable knox services (no warranty voided)
--Bootloader is already unlocked for the sprint model (SPH-L710), and is locked for other carriers such as AT&T and Verizon (for which they use safestrap)
--Since bootloader is unlocked for this model, I can install custom recoveries and custom roms as long as i dont install versions below 4.3.
for example i can install roms such as:
[ROM][4.3][TW] BareBones v2.3(3-28-14)
[ROM][MK3] PROJECT X v4.3 [Team Rejectz][3/24/14]
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL][AOSP][KK][27/03] **C-RoM** -4.4.2- -v5.6!
But NOT ROMs such as:
[ROM][4.2.2] MIUI V5 4.2.14 d2spr
[ROM][4.2.2] [UNOFFICIAL] Dirty Unicorns v3.6 [7/30] (HALO!)
since they are below 4.3
--My warranty is still not voided due to the disabling of knox right after rooting.
Thank you very much
You can flash any ROM zip, unless otherwise noted. You can't downgrade the bootloader below 4.3, which is done via ODIN, flashing a tar file that is under 4.3. Tar files flash every partition including bootloader. You will have to remove assert lines from ROM itself to keep from getting errors in recovery. Also use Philz advanced cwm recovery for best results.

Thanks a lot joeyhdownsouth! it makes more sense now

Reverting back to rooted stock firmware..... Is this possible?

Hey Guys,
My phone information is listed in the picture attached.
I'd like to go back to just the rooted stock firmware. Is this possible to just download the rooted firmware and just flash it with CWM?
Can someone point me in the right direction. With a link to the firmware maybe and a process in how I could achieve this.
Rogers Galaxy S3 (Canada)
You can download your firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmwares
You have to flash these in Odin and unless its the NF1 build you can root with Towelroot.
There is no pre-rooted kk firmware.
Hi!
In addition to what DocHoliday77 said: Samsung does not provide pre-rooted official firmware, but you can find CWM-flashable or Odin-flashable ones in the S3 Android Development forum. I.e.:
[ROM][STOCK] Rogers/Bell/Telus [TW 4.3/MK5/ROOTED] KNOX/NO-KNOX - 12/05/13
[HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel]
I would also suggest you browse through the pages of the Android Dev forum, as you may find other stock rooted ROMs available. The thread that present stock and/or rooted ROM have it indicated in the thread's subject. Instructions are also written in those threads on how to install the ROM.
Moreover, if you have in the past upgraded to at least Android 4.3, make sure not to install a firmware older than 4.3 (or at least, the bootloader part, as you will brick your phone).
I would only add to that by saying if you flash anything outside of this sub-forum, be careful abd make absolutely sure it is compatible with your device. Flashing roms intended for other devices often results in a hard brick.
