I was reading through lifehacker.com the other day (my SECOND favorite website ) when I came across a link to an instructables guide on turning a netbook into a tablet and it got me thinking. Why should I have to buy a $500+ tablet every year or two, or settle for a crappy $200 one when I can buy a used netbook and make it new again for half the price of the high end ones and probably better performing than the low end? Plus I'd have upgradability when it starts being sluggish in the future.
Here's the thing: I'm not content with essentially making a netbook into a slate that runs WinXP and calling it a day. I want it to run Android and have (most of) the bells and whistles. All on a budget of $250. What I'm thinking of so far is this:
10.1" Intel-Atom tablet, ebay ~$70
CAPACITIVE touchscreen overlay ~$110
SSD ~$60
Which leaves me with about 10 bucks for stuff to make it look good.
There is an x86 android port floating around on the internet that I plan on using and I've seen netbooks with built in GPS/gyro/accelerometer/etc. Although, I'm not so sure if just booting Android will get all of that to work of if I'll have to somehow write my own drivers... Honestly, I would have no idea where to start on that. Does anyone have any insight into how that might/might not work?
I don't have any of the parts yet, but have begun bidding on some stuff on ebay. If anyone would like to sell me something that might help, PM me. If you all are interested, I'll post updates and pictures as I'm working on it, however if not, then I'll probably just post something of the finished product. Functioning hardware or not.
Whether or not any of you take an interest in this project, I would appreciate any comments or advice that you can offer. I'm sure that as I go along I'll have questions to ask and hopefully one of you will be able to help.
I read the same thing and I would interested in how you go about it. I was not impressed with the lifehacker.com instructions or any of the other ones I found on line.
Thanks for the interest, glsooter. I still plan on completing this project sometime this summer probably and will update with pictures and what I am doing, but unfortunately I've had to make a few changes. It won't primarily run Android, although I could dual boot. My main reasoning behind this is that it would be impossible for me with my skill set to add the required hardware and then get it to work (such as accelerometer and gyroscope). Also, the capacitive touch screen I want to get is apparently Windows only. I'm thinking of using the Windows 8 preview or alternatively loading Win7 and using Rainmeter or something similar to give it a touchscreen functional layout. I also want to take a Bluetooth keyboard and make some sort of dock, like the Transformer Prime. My newest goals for the project is to have a portable tablet-esque gadget that I will use for retro gaming with a BT controller or mobile (android) gaming and productivity using BlueStacks. If I need laptop functionality I can use the BT keyboard/mouse combo for word processing or note taking. There are obviously some details to be hammered out, but I'm now thinking it will be closer to $350, which I feel is reasonable for something like this.
I was thinking about installing android on my 12.1" asus eepc with intel atom but i cant do it now (i get it in next month). I want to try how it works with android (maybe there are no need for drivers or only some of them?). If i get it earlier i try it and i can write here results how it works for me.
PS.
Could u give me link to android x86 and installing market on it (i heard that it must be installed other way). thanks
PS2.
I will be using it without touchscreen
that sound like a really good idea, but maybe not as a tablet alone but as a laptop+tablet, like the Thinkpad X Tablet series.
So i tried and installed android-x86 on my eeepc 1201nl and only froyo is working I wanted ics but i take what i can.
Working on it is very easy (even without touchscreen). I have problems only with wifi (cant connect to router). I found that some other people have similar problems.
However i will be trying it again and again. I want ics

I have decided that I can not deal with the locked bootloader on this tablet and have chosen to sell it (got more then I paid). The A100 is a wonderful tablet and has great potential but the lack of developers and dead end bootloader is a showstopper.
I am waiting for another brand 7 inch tablet to arrive by Fedex later this week. It has the same basic specs as the a100. CWM is already available and there is a small amount development going on. But it is new on the market. No ICS yet. There is some talk in getting CM9 on it.
It is really disappointing that the 10 inch tabs are getting all of the glory, I really think the 7 inch is the best size for carrying with you.
see yah!
The locked bootloader isn't a big deal for me because the tab already does everything I want it to do. The only thing that could make this tab already better than what it is would be the unlocked bootloader that way we could look at different rom options (but to be honest the rom that's currently there isn't that bad at all). Granted it would be nice to overclock, but its already pretty fast and I haven't really had any hiccups while using it since I released the custom build.prop (except for using hdmi which I'm working on).
I think eventually we'll get some sort of work around for the bootloader working, its just a matter of time. I'm definitely not going to drop this tab though just because we don't have it figured out yet.
I do wish there was someone other than myself that's taken an interest in this tab that knows their way around custom recoverys and bootloaders since that's not one of my strong points but at least I'm trying to help.
I wont call you a sell out, but I will wish you good luck with your new device and happy modding!

Never really understood why people have to announce that they're dumping their device and leaving the forum. Has anyone ever seen a community beg a person PLEASE keep their tablet/phone/etc and stay?

I agree, but everyone is entitled to thier opinion. I personally don't care how bad you thought it sucked and what you're replacing it with. If you don't have anything useful to contribute don't bother posting. For me these "goodbye" types of posts fall into that catagory.
That's just my own opinion though.

I actually like my A100 and plan to hold on to it for a while.
Is that okay with everyone?
(Of course if someone wanted to pay me enough for it so I could buy the next, better thing....)
to OP good luck with your future endeavors as I am sure you will have new things you will complain about your new device seeing how you would post something like this.
And crossix thank you for all your hard work. I really wish I knew more than I could to help you and others out but I try to put in where I can. We need more devs like you around here.

I think its a simple way of letting their frustrations go. I was just doing some research on this tab as I'd like to have a nice little 7 inch carry along but not so sure about it with the locked b/l and bad viewing angles.
Is the screen as bad as it looks in videos? From what I've seen and read this thing runs very smooth and lagfree, am I right about that?
Thanks for any info.

Theres really only 1 bad angle which is about 120 degrees towards the bottom. It gets darker. So jus flip it 180 in landscape and youre good. Left, right and top angle are great IMO. As far as speed. Here's one I posted....you be the judge....

The only lag I've ever experienced was when I was on the early 3.2 builds. After upgrading to the latest 3.2.1and running the custom build.prop, the only bit of lag I've seen is playing 720p video in flash and 720p software mode video on hdmi out. But my atrix had the same issue, so I think its just a limitation of stock tegra2. I resovled it on my atrix by overclocking, so if we ever find a method of running a custom kernel I think it'll be resolved.

I have never experienced any lag whatsoever in the a100. also, i have heard so much about the viewing angles, and as aznmode said, there is only one slightly off angle and there is no reason whatsoever to have to be looking in that angle unless you just choose to do so. I have several tabs and i use the acer more than the others combined because it does everything that is needed and it is very easy to carry around. Also I have hear reviewers complain about the battery, however i can useit on and off all day long without charging and also it charges twice as fast as most. i wouldn't hesitate to purchase this tab again, i would just love to see some more development. The rom itself is very fast and extremely stable, the only real complaint that i have about the tab is that i would like to see usb host mode working. i also wanted to say thanks to crossix and all of the other devs that have put alot of work into it so far!

If you have a big microsd card, you could swap it with the internal memory (I really need to add direct links to these things to my signature..).
Just out of curiosity has anyone contracted koush to see if he can unlock the bootloader. On his website he says that he just needs the tablet for about a week. I know that you guys have been working on it and have made some bits of progress, but maybe a new set of eyes might be helpful. I do support for two as we got the kids some for Christmas but I need to leave them stock so they can't get into and erase stuff they need for them to run.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes or if this has already been attempted just disregard.
Thanks to the developers for their work.

I started this thread when I was really pissed off at the A100. Between my touch screen failing and the many hours spent to get a working tun.ko on it. Due to the encrypted kernel I could not even load a kernel module.
To explain I need tun.ko and advanced routing so I can connect to a Cisco VPN for work. While waiting for my tab to be returned from service went to Best Buy and picked up the Samsung Galaxy tab plus, installed VPNC and it worked with no problem.
The A100 is a really nice device and for 90% of people it is perfect. I actually preferred the styling compared to the Samsung slab, but VPN is the reason I wanted a tab in the first place.
I wish you all good luck with cracking the bootloader.
I plan on keeping my a100 at least until I can afford a tegra 3 tab.

I use remote desktop with a virtual pc setup to connect up to my works Cisco VPN and it works really well, especially when I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected up to the tab (I also use this same setup with my atrix), it works great!
I also use this same setup for one of my clients Nortel Networks VPN which doesn't work at all on android nativity. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the a100 but for the price its hard to find fault with it.

Agreed the price is right.
The virtual PC solution is not an option since I not only need it for RDP and VNC but also to sync my contacts, email and calendar. I was connecting to my home VPN and then jumping through to work but I need my contacts and email in somewhat a real time solution.
Anyone had any luck...or, better yet, experience, with any input accessories for their LGOG--particularly the e970 AT&T version?
I mean, they're some of the largest smartphone screens out there, so I was just wondering if anyone with other devices had tried out any BT KB's (for iPads, maybe?), or if any of the 'wise ones' out there have had any luck finding out how to poke into any OTG capabilities yet?
I was [NOT!] surprised when a Best Buy employee tried pushing the MOGA gamepad at me while I was buying my e970, when he couldn't even tell me whether he knew it worked with my smartphone or not (cagey ploy by me, I was looking at OTG compatibility back then, and still haven't found enough games for the phone to warrant buying this $50 gamepad). I'm sure it works, but I'm still wanting more from my phone before chucking any more cash at it (esp. while we're living under the iron, 'non-rooting' thumb, of the all-knowing Nat'l Librarian....?).
I've used the 'Unified Remote' app for over 2 years, and upgraded to the paid version nearly 2 months ago...still looking for an adequate online guide to help me use the added features I paid for there (like, step-by-step directions on how to program even one single button in a custom remote you can supposedly make).
The various BT keyboards out for iPad make me wanna believe they'd ALL sync with ANY BT device or dongle, as long as it was the latest BT version (seeing plenty of 4.0 BT keyboards for iPad out there).
I'd love to see if anyone has found a compatible BT keyboard with either a mousepad or maybe even a built-in joystick that worked...maybe even a trackball? Just interested in making the most of having to settle with AT&T AND Android.
BTW...for the record, still very happy with the raw speed of my e970--for one thing, it installs apps faster than anything I've ever seen anywhere, and I still think developers need to be writing more apps for it, including games...I never see any reviews on 'Play' for anything, once I filter for the Optimus G. It worries me.

I think this is a really cool idea. The only real issue that I'm concerned about is how it's controlled. From the demo videos, it looks as though the phone's screen is turned off, is that correct? It seems that could be difficult for trying to highlight segments of text or click into specific fields of an online form.
If you connect a mouse via bluetooth, will you get a cursor on your screen? I am admittedly ignorant to how that works with phones as I have no access to a bluetooth mouse.
Cheers.

Bump and a heads up to folks looking at this.
In addition to my support, fellow xda dev zacthespack of LinuxOnAndroid fame has expressed his support of the project as well. A result of this is that I will reexamine Android/Linux hybrid setups and give my findings to the Linux-On-Android team should it become a reality. So if you ever wanted an Asus Padfone or something similar but could not afford it, this may be the way to go. Now you may think that the projected asking price is a little too high but price out an 11.1 HDMI display, BT keyboard and massive battery and the Casedock starts to look pretty inexpensive. Compared to the Padfone it a steal.
I will also examine hw level mods to improve the dock as well and give those findings to the Livi-Design team. This is not about fame or money for me but getting tech convergence into the mainstream and breathing life back into a stagnating industry.

For me this is the most interesting project I have seen on kickstarter. I am following it since 2 weeks and it is very sad to see that it hasn't reached the goal yet. I think the people don't realize the extent of it's usability. I really hope you will try to get this through even if you don't succeed on kickstarter. Unfortunately it will set the release back even farther.
Edit: And it should get a news here on XDA!

I have an iPhone 5 I'm using as an Ipod and was looking to sell it. Was looking at tablets and was thinking nexus 7 2013, LG gpad 8.3 and the Samsung galaxy note 8.0. I liked the other one since they have. Bigger screens but their development is at a minimum while the nexus has a lot of roms and support. Is the hardware subpar as some would suggest? Is wifi connection a problem over time? Would just like to know what's really happening before I make my purchase. Thanks appreciate all input.

Ive had mine for a week and loving it.
Coming from a 1st gen Kindle fire, this is much better. Kindle I would have to turn wifi off if not actively using it.
Here, I'm actually leaving wifi on 24/7 and also not even plugging it in at night.
Left it idling at work all day, lost about 9% battery. Went to sleep, woke up, 2% gone.
Actually just checked stats, 81%, Not charging
1d 6h 2m on battery. To me, thats good.
I even watched a whole 50min tv show and lost I think 2%.
I'm liking it. Only time I seen the battery go nuts and the device get hot was when I was with Google Earth.
So far no screen problems. I sometimes feel I had a tap on keyboard no detect, but when I tested in a multi touch tester, everything looks fine.
Plus I got mine on sale at staples, so $150, cant go wrong.
I'm wondering about the touch issues as well. Maybe I should just buy one at a big store so i can return it if I have any problems.

Touch issues is truly a hit-or-miss. Your device might have issues, as well as it might not. I had 2 devices (16gb which I returned for 32gb) which both had very mild touchscreen issues.

Lucked out. staples $229, microcenter price match to 199, then a 2day $50 off coupon.
They had no 32gb in stock. When I went to another that had it, I was too stressed to deal with an exchange.
Microcenter matched the 32 to 229, so with 50 off coupon could have been had for 179.

I am also planning to buy one. Is there any batch which has no problems? I use HTC one x and few had hardware WiFi problems. So august batch was perfect as HTC admitted the issue which i bought. Since with my budget this is the best tab I am kind of leaned towards it. But I can't have one which has any problem coz In my country there is no replacement warranty for nexus devices. Is there any way to check the batch number to get a perfect device?

Other than sending it back on your own dime? None.
Google doesn't have a physical store like Apple, which I sorely missed. Not to mention the almost ZERO support from Google on any issue, judging by the posting in Google product forum. I.e. multi touch, Wi-Fi, Google Now, etc.
This is why forum like XDA exist.

Sorry if I am hijacking this thread to ask my questions here but do you feel the tablet functions lag-free, choppy and fault-free even without having to root the device? I mean, all I need the tablet to do is to function without any faults or lag, which I would appreciate I could accomplish without having to risk rooting the device which itself has caused issues for many.
Secondly, plenty seemingly report that updating the OS poses more and more problems for them so would you suggest sticking to the same OS that the tablet runs out of the box instead of updating it anytime?
Finally, there's no Google or Apple store in the country where I reside. Would you suggest buying this or Apple iPad (3rd Generation) keeping in view the chances of hardware/software failures of the two tablets. If there are any other suggestions you might wanna make, please go ahead.
Thanks in advance.
Yeah this tablet has to many problems in my opinion. All these issues and Amazon reviews list so many problems or others report that after a while everything starts breaking down. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean quality control and build quality should be so bad. I'm going to go with LG gpad 8.3. Rock solid build and pretty great performance and features. Was $350 but this weekend price dropped to about $270. Yes you may not get those updates fast or even ever but it seems like updates are hurting the nexus 7 anyway from all the reports i read. Google is really dropping the ball.

Google is really dropping the ball.

I suppose you are right, especially considering there are so many genuine issues riding the device and there is no support in my country form Google AT ALL. Thanks so much for introducing me to the LG G Pad 8.3; I had no knowledge of that one. Seems nice but I was beginning to consider SONY Xperia Z Tab but after some research, I discovered that that tab had issues of its own including genuine lag on the tablet.
I guess LG G Pad 8.3 is my best bet right now. Can you recommend some place that ships internationally and is actually reliable and offers the best price on the LG G Pad 8.3 INCLUDING where you might be getting it from? I did stumble upon newegg's latest offering here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834325004
I was wondering if you'd recommend this or someplace else.
I would be glad to hear from you soon.
Thanks.

It's really sad what Google is doing to their products. They need to drop ASUS because their quality is really low. Yeah the LG G Pad is looking really good to me right now. Sorry I live in the US so I don't know much about international Shipping. Currently New egg has the best deals on this tablet so you can shop around on their. Haven't seen any better deals Yet. Let me know how tit works for you. And yes I also discovered about the G Pad browsing the forums. Before I purchase a device I do extensive research On it. Many have complained about the nexus 7 2013's quality and hardware problems and in Comparison LG has very little. In fact I believe its because no ones knows abut the LG Tab yet so its not widely Known. Its a really good deal in my honest opinion. Great hardware and software. I compared to the Note 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 7.0 but the Samsung's seems really inferior at this point. Low screen density and Slow processors. I guess to each his own however, some people just like touch wiz. In Fact I have a Note 2 and in Terms of phones i prefer Samsung but their tablets or at last the small ones are really lagging behind right now.
