[Q] Best kernel for Stock 4.2.1? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

What is the best kernel for stock 4.2.1 rom?
What I seek:
Fast, smooth and good battery life.
Type of Use:
Use hard during the day, but do not play games on it. Social networks, email, camera (very used), music (very used), feeds, maps, youtube.
I tested the Leankernel, quite liked, has a good battery life and is very slightly faster and smoother than stock, but has some small lag sometimes.

Yep I too wanted to ask the same question as I love stock but hate the color contrast! So yeah what is the best one for stock?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

There is no "best" kernel. The one built into the ROM you use (in your case stock) is usually the best combination since they were built to work together.

I'd say stock. For non-stock I'd say leankernel. Since you tried both, I guess I'm out of options here. Trinity was way too buggy, Franco did better, but not quite there yet since 4.2, AK is worth a try. Faux is not bad either. But I always end up with stock. Try each for a few days, since they work differently on ever phone. See which works the best for you.

Which ROM is best?

I have just ordered a GSM Galaxy Nexus and I am going to root and install a new ROM on it as soon as it arrives!
What is the best general ROM? That has above average battery but great performance!

the one that has all the features you want.
seriously, go read through the dev section at the roms listed and find one you want to try.
At the moment, everyone is swarming to AOKP because it is stable and feature-rich. Try it. I bet you won't leave it lol
aokp is awesome when it comes to features and it's relatively fast but the fastest, most stable, and best battery life so far goes to cm9 nightly with francos kernel. just a pleasure to use as an everyday driver

I was going to try a few out I was just wondering is there was one that just stood out!
I'll probably try CM9 nightlies to start with and then probably try miui as I loved that ROM on my N1!

CM9 + GLaDOS 1.28 kernel once you've tried it you will come back to it every time
Beets. Bears. Battlestar Galactica.
AOKP best by far...everything is customizable including the nav bar...you even get the weather on your lockscreen if you want. i recommend pairing it with franco kernel build133 with stock GPU....sooooooooooo smooth

I've tried most of the ROM's and so far imho,
1. Foxhound (it's aokp, just better and no pink unicorn)
2. BAMF (it's stock, has a few glaring missing/standard things, but rock solid. I like it.)
3. AOKP (3 versions b27, milestone and b29 it was buggy, new features broke)
AOKP apparently is better but I haven't tried it and to be honest, I rather wait for Foxhound.

I think it's simply because it's presented better on the forum and the fact it has thousands and thousands of posts. You should try foxhound, i bet you wont leave it. Wait for the next version though because it will probably have most if not all aokp features. (honestly, I thought AOKP rocked too and I do, but it's not the best in my opinion)
Aokp b31. You'll always go back to it.

Aokp. Feature packed, not buggy.
Build 29 yes it had bugs. That's why it's called a build and not milestone. Bugs exist, the Aokp team fixes it almost immediately. No problem there.

Liquidsmooth has a ton of features and a small footprint.
I have tried a bunch of roms, for my use and max battery life I always seem to find myself reflashing Foxhound 0.2.. It is AOKP but better for me.. I'm going to flash Fox 0.5 this morning and try it for the weekend. Fox just needs more themes for it..

Foxhound was my first Rom after rooting then I went to CNA and now I'm on AOKP and both CNA and AOKP are better than foxhound.
I only read feature this feature that yada yada... Im stock 4.0.4, buttery smooth, Rock solid stability, Rock solid reliable, godly battery life, and you can always use that Rock solid plataform and put in the top another launcher e.g Apex wich has lot of extra features, customization theres loads of widgets minimalistic text, etc etc... So I dont see the point on changing your Rock solid stock OS for some random mod OSs.. Thats my point of view.. Upgrade to 4.0.4 vía OTA then unlock bootloader and root and then your imagination and your pocket its your limit
EDIT: just in case you need to change your baseband to fit with your carrier if you are having some kind of signal lost or any other carrier related issue like i did, flash CWM so you can reflash easy, fast and safe all kind of basebands until you find the perfect 1 for you, in my case it was the xxkl1 cuz my Carrier was not working at all with the xxkk6 that came with my IMM76D 4.0.4 upgraded

Don't use cwm to flash radios fast and easy. That is a fast and easy way to hard brick your phone. Use fastboot to flash base bands. If something is not right fastboot wont flash it.
zippity doo da.
No best,just better
I have tried many ROMS from the DEV section and must say FoxHound is the best ROM. It is based on AOKP so it has a lot of great customizable features for your phone.

ROM+Kernel Recommendations For New Galaxy User

I just finished rooting my Galaxy Nexus (Sprint) and I'm looking for a decent ROM+Kernel combo to flash...
I'm coming from an OG Evo 4G and while there were ALOT of nice ROMS I'd say that about 9 out of 10 were "working fully"...by working fully I mean with no real issues...I understand that one or two things might not work that great but there were alot of ROMs that seemed like they were just pushed out to be the first with the latest "flavor of the month"...
I understand it takes tons of work to make custom ROMs and I appreciate all the hard work, but some folks just seemed like they threw anything together and flashed it...and also offered no support on the issues that popped up...
I can't decide whether to just leave this new phone rooted/stock or flash something...I just don't wanna go through constant FC's and non-working features on a brand new device...
I know most people say "flash it and find out for yourself" but I'm just asking a simple question here...just wanna know if most of these ROMs are solid...
so if there are any recommendations please post em up...
I'm sure there are some ridiculous ROMs for this phone because the phone itself is CRAZY!!
One other question- since I use Sprint do I have to look for ROMs for Sprint devices only or are all the Galaxy Nexus ROMs okay to flash?
Thanks.
So... you should just stay stock rooted.
Looks like the sprint dev section has most of the major players ported.
They are all stable for the most part.
I'm running Franco kernel nightly 152, that's there.
But Doesn't look like the ROM I'm on is ported yet.

I have ButterNutz which is fairly close to stock 4.0.4 if you aren't interested in customizing every little detail of the ROM. I haven't posted it here at XDA though.
AOKP Milestone 4 and Franco Milestone 3 on mine, have not had a single problem. Right now on 14 hours of moderate use - music, calls, texts, Web surfing but no gaming - w/ 39% battery life remaining.

Milestone 5 is out.
If you're just looking for a general outline, the big four are Gummy, AOKP M5, Miui, and CM9 alpha.
Of those I'd say AOKP gives you the most customization while miui gives you the least. Most other builds I've seen for the gnex are usually inferior (IMHO) builds of those 4.
I don't notice a huge difference between custom kernels but one major benefit is being able to set the clock speed. I know Franco does that when paired with the $3 app. So you can't go wrong there.
Good luck.

I'll suggest same as many others - AOKP M5 + nightly franco.kernel 152. Really buttery smooth and bug free experience.
Liquidsmooth + Francokernel is pretty good. very smooth, lots of useful tweaks, great battery life too.

BlackIce Kangorade by travp624 (on RootzWiki or Goo) or CM9 Kang by winner00. A very solid rom!! All the roms are great! For or a kernel that's fast and stays at an extremely low temp I always wind up sticking with Trinity! Great kernels, big selection! 1344/345 or the TUV.. I've flashed around and with these Trinity I always get 4+ on the screen ..
(w/heavy usage!!) You will notice a difference right away and just gets better. Also grab the app (Trinity Toolbox) Has some that aren't available to pubic and it's good to support the devs!! If you have never flashed Kangorade you are missing out! Amazing rom!!!!
Yes, most of the ROMs are quite stable, the exceptions to the rule seem to be clearly labeled as unstable. Yes, you will need to flash Sprint (toroplus) ROMs but you can flash any of the Galaxy Nexus kernels. Most of the mods and themes should probably work too but you'll probably have greater luck trying a CDMA version rather than GSM.

Best 4.0.4 ROM?

Hello,
I'm somewhat new to flashing ROMs (althought I stay up to date with Franco's nightly kernels), so I am kind of hesitant to flash all the time (especially since backing up constantly is a pain). The first ROM I flashed was Redemption ROM, which was a pretty zippy stock experience, but I wanted something more featured, so I switched to Axiom Crossbreed because I heard good things about it.
I like Axiom Crossbreed, but it's no longer being supported and updated by DroidTheory, the dev, due to moving onto new projects. It's based off of AOKP, but I'm hesitant to flash even another AOKP ROM because I know for a fact that Crossbreed is relatively fast, gets good battery life, and stable.
Among other things, it has features like custom lockscreens, double-tap to open Play Store (which I have grown extremely accustomed to), and just a customizable interface in general. But like I said, it's not being maintained, so in a long-winded way, what I mean to ask is: What other ROM(s) could I try that are practically guaranteed to be fast, stable, offer customization (octo lock screen, double-tap homescreen to open Play Store, custom battery icon, etc), and have great battery life--while also being updated and maintained on a regular basis?
Thanks a million!
Check out ICSourcery version 3.1. Best ROM by far I think. The amount of customization on it is amazing.

Thoughts on ROM's so far??

So I'm new to the android community coming from an iphone 4S, and so far it's pretty awesome. lol. I've tried two ROM's, AOKP and TuchMi. So far i'm enjoying TuchMi since it brings the stock with all of Samsung's features, plus overclocking, V6 and all that. performance has been nice. As i'm trying to get more into android, I wanted to know you guy's thoughts on the two ROM's or maybe any other ones that might be better?? thanks in advance!

I was hoping this thread to run good since I am trying to get an idea on roms since I just got my S III today.
We got enough good roms going.
I mean we have a subsidized carrier phone, so it's pretty natural for the international counterpart would get more attention.
With that said, I love AOKP.
AOKP is beast. Just trying to test out different ROM's, but seriously, if you like touchwiz, check it out. Only thing is, my apps say they are invalid when I download. Any help??

Diet ICS
Also tried TuchMi, it was pretty good.
Currently using the diet ICS build from 08/04 with the latest BLUE theme installed (found in the diet ICS thread from peterguru) and it looks and works great. Running ktoonz latest kernel (which allows underclocking to 192MHz and has more steps than faux123's v009) and smokin's CPU Editor with Battery Saver. Great battery life, great performance, awesome blue "diet" theme. Probably my favorite so far.
To be honest though the thing that made me switch and flash diet ICS over TuchMi 5.0 was the inclusion of Google Wallet (although now my phone thinks its a Galaxy Nexus ) -- still haven't been able to test it out in the wild though...

I've been on TuchMi-S3"X" 5.0 since i got my phone 2 weeks ago. So far the best. I tried Diet rom too, but it was a little skinny for me (lol?).
I tried AOKP today and I had used AOKP on my Atrix before, but I went back to TuchMis3x right away because its so far the best. Stable, Battery is insane too!
I'm just waiting for CM10 to fully come out for our phones and i'll make the switch!
Sooo, I switched from TuchMi to AOKP, and right after, my battery starts to drain. Drained about 5% within 2min. Running TuchMi, my battery barely moves. Now I'd have to say that it is successfully the best ROM imo. only problems are: my Google account syncs on and off with contacts, and sometimes i get a blue screen fracture. idk.

If your battery drained that fast then something is wrong. Almost 11 hours on battery with 2 hours of screen time, lte on all day and wifi on past 3 hours and I am sitting at 62% right now. I am on aokp ics right now. Only thing keeping me from newer updates is that HBO go doesn't work in any of the cm10 based in roms yet that I know of
I would also like to point out that it takes several battery cycles before a rom fully settles in and you find out how it truly performs with battery.

Thanks for that. Like I said, I'm new to this so I didn't know what was going on, so the first thing that came to my mind was to go back. Now I just flashed the AOKP jb ROM. The AOKP that i had before was the CM9 based one i believe? lol. Either way, thanks man. added a little more confidence for me lol.
Jellybro from Euroskank the best one for my needs. not the last one though. 2 days battery, butter smooth, love the Jelly aesthetics and simplicity.
When the bugs are worked out of paranoid android I would say give that a run. The ability to run phone and tablet on one device together flawlessly is great. Plus you ave full control over the size of all apps and the such.
JellyBro is my top pick, then would be a stock ROM ([ROM]{??/??/????}TEAM_INSOMNIA PrEsEnTs ARISTODEMOS) and after that I'd say AOKP CM9 based for EXTREMELY long battery life.
been using cm9 for a few days, perfectly stable so far and great battery life. Can't beat stock ics
Blazer
I have been on Blazer O/C with the Kalagas mixed ICS Theme and love it. Seems all the stock based ROMS are fine with some nice tweaks

browser performance

Compared to the other phones I have used I have noticed that browser performance on my GNex seems slow. I have used both stock browser and Chrome. Has anyone else noticed this or have any tips on increasing browser performance? I am using a pretty clean rom (MMuzzy 4.2.1).
+1 this, both the default browser and especially chrome is very slow, I've had better results with third party browsers (dolphin browser, firefox etc.)

There really any risks. It's the same process as flashing a ROM.
Boot into Recovery, Wipe Dalvik and Cache, Flash Kernel.
Upon flashing a new ROM, you will need to reflash the kernel after flashing the ROM as flashing the ROM will override your existing kernel with the packaged kernel that comes with the ROM.

I have a iPod Touch 3rd Generation (really just use it for music nowadays), Transformer, NS, GN, N4.
The only browsing problem out of those devices I had was my Nexus S where stock browser was laggy but it may of been fixed in 4.0.X. On GB, the experience wasn't very good. iOS browsing is definitely smooth, but I can't bother to use it anymore because the screen is way too small.
I don't use the GN anymore, I gave it to a family member but the browsing has been nothing but exceptional. I can't even choose whether to use AOSP browser (stock on GN) or chrome.
It won't make a difference.

Better than doing nothing. It would make a difference on the overall phone performance that's for sure. Use Trickster Mod with Franco Kernel to customize the kernel in terms of color, sound, frequencies, etc.

I highly disagree that using a custom kernel on Android 4.2.1 will make a noticeable difference. It is my humble opinion that Google has optimized this device as far as possible to the point that these third-party developers can't squeeze out anymore performance - if it was possible the Google engineers would have done it themselves.
I use to be a huge Trinity fan, used it since the ICS days and swore up and down by it - now I just run with stock. Do I notice a difference? NOPE.

By saying that you're implying that NO custom kernel on 4.2.1 on ANY phones it would make a difference. So you're calling everybody a liar in kernel threads because they feel a placebo? It certainly makes a noticeable difference in overall phone performance as well as battery.
Google has not optimized the device as far as possible by ANY means. There are always room for improvement in every device and software that is ever released. As more optimizations are done, it is harder to optimize but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. ALWAYS.
On the Nexus 4, your statement is outright wrong. Google didn't optimize the kernel by any means, there are many problems with it. It is stable for sure, but there is so much Google could of done to improve the kernel where kernel developers are doing quite the job on improving upon it. This goes the same for the Galaxy Nexus as it is the Galaxy Nexus forum.
Colors on stock kernel vs. custom kernel with Color Control... difference? YUP.
Benchmark differences? YUP. (benchmarks dont really mean anything for real-time performance but for some people they are so 'woah' about it)
Improved WiFi performance? YUP. Proved in many threads with newer sources.
Not to mention the PGM module? PGM is so awesome for the Galaxy Nexus that it can't be given up
For me the speed on Stock Android JB 4.2.1 browser is really good but I have issue with uploading:
When I upload files to e.g. xda-developers, ge.tt, mediafire, etc. uploading will fail what have not happened on JB 4.1.2 and older Jelly Bean ROMs.
So if I want to upload file to internet I have to use Chrome.
I use 3G on my Nexus pretty much and the speed is really good compared to other browsers e.g. Chrome, Dolphin.
if there is one thing where the galaxy nexus is really great is browser performance, the stock browser works fantastic, stock or with some custom kernel, the browsing experience is almost the same.. if your browser performance is bad may be your connection or any other issue, because atleast in my case it works perfect.
I just recently switched back to Dolphin after giving Chrome a good month or so to wow me. I don't think it is a lot faster than Chrome, but it is faster. Plus, extensions.
I've used Quick ICS Browser for ages and it's great. Recently started using Opera and it's pretty sweet too, although nut as feature-packed.
