How much battery do running services use? With froyo I don't see any way to stop them unless someone knows of a way to do it. My widgets always restart in the background and cnet is always running even though I don't have it set as a widget. All the apps that stop them dont work on froyo. Is killing running services the same as killing tasks as in its bad for the phone?

Yeah, don't stop services manually unless you absolutely have to. These are the active parts of apps. Technically, they aren't a part of the apps per se, but anyways you can read the documentation on the Android Developers site if you really want to know about them. They can drain the battery, so be on the lookout for apps that have services running all the time. If you start having battery troubles, look at those apps first to see if they are a problem. That being said, most services do very little in the background and aren't a problem. Most will go away if you turn off auto update settings in apps or get rid of widgets or other persistent parts of apps. Long press on the homescreen, hit shortcuts>settings>running services to get an easy way to view and manage running services. You can stop some of them there, but again, don't do it unless you have to. Its better to uninstall the app if you think its using too much power/resources. Also, you should get the Manage Applications shortcut too. Its in the same location and is really handy for managing your apps.
I've noticed lately that K9 Email always seems to be running now and it never used too.
I have to manually stop it.
So here's the issue. Google maps is great and useful, but even when you're not using it, it's running in the background and hogging up ram. Now, before you give me the old "android uses ram in a different way" speech, it's pretty obvious that maps doesn't take long to reopen even if it's been cleared from the ram. So it'd be better to have that ram freed up for multitasking purposes.
Also, constantly running in the background means it's draining some battery too.
The solution to this would be to disable maps when not using it and then reenable it when required. However, this takes time.
So, I was wondering if anyone could make a shortcut/app which let's us disable and enable the maps app with just the press of a button.
Freeze it using titanium back up
Sent from my GT-I9300 with a BIG
I have a list of apps I freeze n unfreeze regularly - like easy ums or paragon ntfs - I have the unfreez all widget to aim in quick access - but if you spent the time to make a filter in titianium your could have it unfreeze a particular app
Just go application manager > all > disable it, I'd saw uninstalled update then uninstall it and disable
Else, use titanium backup freeze it, don't be lazy keep on asking developer to do such thing

Titanium has a widget that lets you disable and enable a specific app. No need for a different app.
Tasker? It does wonders.
For me, it makes a new application called (New Maps) that unfreezes google maps, waits until it is unfrozen, launches it.
If maps has been inactive for the past XX minutes, it will automatically freeze it. (also set to be frozen on boot)
After this thread I found the TiBu action widget that will cycle through Freeze/Unfreeze&Open.
Pretty handy! Use it now for Facebook and Maps.

Am a fanatic tasker user myself, but never spend time on the 'new' app factory.
Would you care to share these profiles/scenes, waste of time to reinvent the wheel twice

2 profiles two tasks
Export new maps as an app and use it whenever you want to launch maps from a frozen state.
Set your own athome variable or modify it if you don't need two different timeout settings

Ok, after analyzing BBS past few nights I've determined even when you freeze something in TiBu, it doesn't actually remove the alarm wakeups from Alarm Manager. You need to do a restart to clear after freeze to truly remove its footprint.
Restart is rather annoying, anybody have any other thoughts on how to better accomplish the freeze process?
Does anybody know a list of pre-installed apps that can be safely "turned off" in our device? This is of course referring to pre-installed apps that can't be uninstalled.
I've read that sometimes turning off certain apparently inoffensive apps may bring instability to the device.
For example, I was just checking my location settings and I saw that AT&T Navigator had been requesting location (with high battery usage), but I don't use that app at all, so I'm plan on turning it off, but I wonder in what other apps that can be done safely.

Generally the asps that allow you to "disable" them are all okay to turn off.
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet using XDA Free mobile app
I disabled anything that had to do with att.
Sent from the TermiNOTEr 4!
The only thing I've found that I had to enable was S Voice, I kept getting a pop up on the camera because it uses it for the selfie camera trigger.
Same here. Disabled everything AT&T and left S Voice active.
Everything ATT except MyAtt and s voice
I've disabled all att stuff and a few other things like s health, s voice, galaxy apps, Samsung account, Samsung billing, Samsung link, remote, print services, ANT services, milk, yahoo weather
I left S Voice alone (other things make use of it), and also Galaxy Apps (allows you to update S Health)

How do disable the Samsung stuff? I can see how to stop it but I don't see an option to disable or turn off.
Also, anyone knows how to disable Lockout? All the options in app info ate greyed out, even force stop

Awesome, that worked! Weird that you have to update it to disable it
I realize this is an older thread, but for others that stumble upon it via search, here's a discussion that includes an extensive list of apps to safely be disabled.

You can install package disabler pro for a small fee.. great app but be careful when u use their auto bloatware disable feature because it can disable some stuff that your phone needs to function.. but this app let's you disable stuff that is greyed out in your app manager like music player for example.
Here is another list which I have followed. Not all of them, but quite a few. It definitely made a difference.
Now, I think many of those you would need to be rooted to do. And of course we know that's not much good now for AT&T phones.
I'm on a T-Mobile Note 4, rooted, so I was OK to try. I did the TIBU/Freeze method.
I'm using Yahoo Mail for my Yahoo account but each time I try to allow Yahoo Mail to access my contacts, I get the following error message:
Screen overlay detected.
To change this permission setting, you first have to turn off the screen overlay from Settings > Apps. I did just that in the Settings > Apps screen but it keeps re-enabling itself! Is this a bug or what? I can't change any of my permission settings for any of my other apps either.

It isn't a bug, but it is a confusing message, which some might consider sub-optimal.
You need to go into
settings->apps->gear icon->draw over other apps
and look for every app that says "Yes"
For any app that isn't from Google, write the app name on a piece of paper, tap on the app name, and then disable "Permit drawing over other apps"
Then go back and run your mail app and you'll be able to accept the permissions it is requesting.
Then go back to
settings->apps->gear icon->draw over other apps
take the list of apps you earlier disabled this permission for, and enable it again, if you feel it is appropriate.
The reason it is happening is because you have an app running that is currently overlaying stuff on your screen. Google can't tell if that is a legitimate app or it is a malicious app trying to gets you to click on other things or stealing your keystrokes.
Before, they just never warned about it. Starting with June update, there was a bug where you couldn't press accept for permissions, only deny.
In July security update, they changed that to give you a warning that there is a screen overlay running and they can't continue.
IMO it is still confusing to the end-user.
I think I found the culprit. It was Omni Swipe causing it to pop up.
This thing is so freaking annoying. I've switched to "no" every single app (including system ones), whatsapp web qrcode scanning feature asking for additionnal camera feature gets stuck with this damn overlay thing.
This is an easy guide to making all of the normal features of google feed, assistant and stuff work properly on any android 7+ phone (haven't tested below 7) in any country that doesn't allow these features.
this is not for everyone, read this in full before starting so that you know what you are getting into.
so far, there has been no danger to my phone's software doing these stuff.
however im not responsible if you do something wrong. follow the steps properly.
DO NOT DELETE GOOGLE FRAMEWORK DATA ON ANDROID 9. THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM
1. first of all download a VPN app from the play store, I personally used the CM VPN but use whatever you want. only important thing is that your vpn must have USA connection.
2. update your google app to the latest version, or even go all the way to the latest beta (I prefer the normal because feed looks nicer)
3. turn on the VPN and go to your location settings, and select GPS Only mode.
4. go to your apps in the settings, press "show system apps" and go to the G letter and find Google Services Framework.
delete all of the cache and data for that app. then find the google app. do the same but it happens in a different window, you gotta press manage data and then delete it from inside the google app.
5. open the google app, wait a few seconds and the google feed shows up. weather is missing and most of the features dont work yet, we will get back to them.
6. disconnect and close the vpn. then restart your device.
7. start by activating the assistant. first i suggest that you pause voice activity in google account settings.then activate the voice assistant step by step to the finish.
8. go to the google app, the 3 lines to the right( settings and stuff) go to assistant settings, in the 2nd tab find "phone" and activate voice unlock (this is just to test if the assistant is working properly) if the voice unlock gets activated properly then you're good, if it doesnt, try deactivating voice and audio activity and try again.
you can disable voice unlock after.
9. so now the assistant is activated, google feed is working, you also need to install a launcher that supports google feed page(i am using lawnchair 2 which is in alpha currently, you can use Nova, Rootless Pixel, or CPL or any other that supports it)
10. in order to get google at a glance on screen if your launcher doesn't have it, there is a widget in your widgets screen, from google themselves.
11. in order to activate the weather, go to location settings, select high accuracy, turn on google location history, and then go to the google feed page in your home screen, on the search bar type "weather" and search for it, open the weather page (the google weather app thingy) and close it. refresh the page and its up and running as the top card.
common problem: disappears after a while
do the search bar thing again and it works.
12. the last thing is reminders. type "reminder" in the search bar of the google feed page, make a reminder, then close the whole thing. open assistant, say show me my reminders, it will tell you the reminder you just set up. delete it using voice commands. then make another reminder using voice commands, go to the google app, open the 3 lines page (bottom right) then open reminders. if you have done everything properly, the reminder you set up in search is gone, and the voice reminder is there. if you don't need it, delete the reminder.
Thats all. I'm living in iran so i know all of this works 100%
Good Luck. ill be answering questions if there is any, whenever i check this again.
