Help me fix my battery life! - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. Thursday last week I got a Note II, wonderful device. I see people stating that it eats 1% battery in 10-15 minutes, but for me, it eats 1% in 1-3 minutes, when in use. I am running MonxIfied Sent and RedPill 0.10 kernel with stock speed. It consumes very little battery when sleeping, but it is in use that is the problem. I will add some pics of battery usage. What's wrong?

We'll it's gonna drain battery if you're using it... what's your screen brighness?

To be honest it seems quite normal. Keep in mind it's a big screen plus if you have mobile data or wifi on then the phone is likely to be doing stuff in the background when the device is awake.

What does the partial wakelocks in better battery stats look like?
EDIT: Eh, never mind, if it consumes very little battery when sleeping it's probably not a wakelock...
There's a pretty steep drop there in the third screenshot, looks strange. Wonder what happened there!

The OP is asking about battery drain when the screen is ON.
Partial wakelocks should be of no concern really, unless his battery was draining fast when screen is off.
EDIT: Haha, just saw you realised

Wifi seems to go off at the point, so possibly phone searching for a mobile data connection?
That's a wild guess though

Yeah these are the problems ive been getting..returning my phone with warranty if they give me a new battery or something..but i get average battery life on screen stand by sucks alot.

From the other thread, your problems do sound a bit different mate

I'm having a little theory. I have also had an iPhone 4, which also had high battery drain. Could the problem be my wifi/router?

Interesting theory. Can't say I know for sure but I guess it's plausable if it has poor signal or drops out often.
Have you tired chaning the channel on it? I do that for my Xbox 360 sometimes if signal is crap.
You could also try flashing a different modem on your Note 2 to see if that improves things. I remember on my old HTC Hero and Desire HD changing the radio (modem) could often improve wifi / mobile data reception and as a result improve battery consumption.
Again, I'm not expert on this so just guessing!

72% with one hour screen on
13% drop when you used recovery
=> after 1 hour screen on 85 percent
=> after 6 hours screen on, 10% battery
=> your phone doesn't have a problem

[Q] incredibly fast battery drain on xperia arc s.

Hi everyone. I've bought my new xperia arc s on Wednesday and unfortunately I'm very disappointed with the battery performance. It is worse than my 3 years old iPhone. I've read many advices in the internet concerning this issue, but none of them gave any improvement for me. I want to emphasize, that I switched off: wifi, auto-sync, GPS & wifi localization etc. My display is at 30% of brightness. The only functions which are turned on are: 3g network and background data.
However, my smartphone needs to be charged after around 10 hours of not very heavy using (web browsing, ca. 20 minutes playing games such as angry birds or cut the ropÄ™ and 20 minutes of listening music player.
Today's performance was just tragic: 5 hours of working (less than 3.5 hours of the turned on screen; only 3g connection on). What should I do to improve these results or maybe the battery is broken and I should send the phone to the warranty service?
Thanks for help

Of course I'll wait, cause I don't want to miss my phone, which looks and works amazingly great. But do you have any tips which would help me to increase battery performance? All I need is 3g or wifi constantly turned on for google talk and facebook messenger.

Are you kidding me? It cannot be that bad.
My phone isn't arc s it's only arc but my battery lasts over 24 hours.
I run wifi and 3g always, usually there's over 1h of calls some web surfing and stuff. With this kinda usage it normallly last something like 36h. If i don't use phone it's over 48h.
You should check what has been using the battery.

I don't know how it's possible. I have only 3g data transfer turned on, while everything else is turned off. I checked in settings and it is screen which consumes 60%-70% of energy in my case. Is it normal? Moreover, could you tell me what is your maximum time of the screen turned on achieved without loading the battery?

Not kidding. Usually if i dont touch the phone, just the normal stuff that use the battery (display, idle etc.)
I use an app called my battery drain analyzer and it shows even when in idle the battery lose about 7%-8% in an hour.

Ill give u few suggestions
Turn the screen brightness to 30 40 % this will give you 4 5 hours more of stand by
Turn off 3g(data internet) it eats as much battery as the screen, use when u need it 4 6h more on stand by
GPS turn it off lol u dont need it to be turned on all the time, use it just when u need it
Im using this setup for 2 months not and its awesome im on 54% battery and the phone is charged before 21h.. i will have 30 + for sure

Hi, just some suggestions.
1. Do you use latitude?? That puts a huge dent in your battery.
2. Do you travel around during the day?? I find that my battery drops a lot quicker when the phone is forced to switch between towers a lot.
3. Try and check the date of manufacture on your battery, It may be old.
4. Did you properly condition your battery when you first got the phone (Takes about a week to do it right but well worth it in the long run)
5. See if you can borrow some one else's battery for a couple of days and see if it makes a difference?? (Isolation testing its called)
Or you could just have a bad battery, that happens.

I'm not sure how much my screen uses battery. I haven't evaluated screen always on usage.
I'm running currently at 46% 23h 3m 54s
voice calls 38% (1h 5m 20s)
wifi 19% (23h 3m 54s)
cell standby 14% (23h 3m 54s)
phone idle 12% (21h 45m 47s)
display 11% (47m 32s)
after these come other less significant stuff like Android OS, Android System, Web browser etc.
In my use are: DoomKernel v20 undervolted -75mv and Juice Defender.
I have also removed many softwares that are useless for me like support.apk etc.

It must be bad battery. If no apps are draining your batt.
read this thread get the betterbattery stats and check it

it will identify it down to a specific app or a module in the kernel, where the drain is coming from.

Man, this is a problem that occours in every android phone, even those ones which have a more powerful battery.
I use an Arc S overclocked (but not too much) and the battery lifes varies a lot, depending on which kernel and which rom I use. The best battery life i've find so far was DoomKernel ICS v4 with Arconium ICS v5. But it was a little bit laggy and now I'm using KA13 with the same kernel. The battery life is not bad, but not really good.
Sony knows this issue and I'm sure they're working in order to fix this on the official release of ICS. Just wait

[Q] Help! Flashed Jelly Bean, down to ~6hrs Standby Battery Life

I flashed Jellybean for my gnex this last weekend, and I've noticed a severely precipitous drop in battery life (15% in 90 min, 15 min screen on). I found this yesterday when my phone went completely dead after just 6 hours on idle, despite running some pretty severe power-saving options. I can literally see the battery draining as I took the screenshots to post.
Running 4.1.1 stock, Franco Kernel Version 5 (power save powermode), 2100 mAh battery - I tried to provide as much information as I can in the screenshots. The weird thing is that none of the information stands out as an obvious power-drain, its just falling for what I believe to be no good reason.
Please help!
First of all: congrats if providing such detailed information about your battery information! (I'm being serious, not sarcastic)
Secondly, have you tried running it with WiFi only to see if there's a difference? Also, you need to go through about 2-3 charge cycles before you have a good idea of our battery range.
Also, what kernel are you using?

I'm hoping its just running it a few charge cycles fixes the problem, because my battery meter is like a countdown clock right now.

I reccommend getting cpu sleeper. Its brillant and saves me tons of battery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eugene373.cpu.sleep&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ldWdlbmUzNzMuY3B1LnNsZWVwIl0.
CPU Sleep
Thanks! However, I'm already running on only one core, from a setting in Franco's app.
My problem is that there doesn't seem to be anything glaring that is draining my battery. Awake time is slightly more than I'd like, but not nearly enough to drain the battery at 10% an hour with the screen off.
And for the above poster, I have not tried running it with wifi only and no mobile data - wifi at my office is spotty, and I'd like the conditions I am testing it at to try to mirror how I would normally use my phone.

hmmm... did u try replacing the battery?
Battery
No - the battery worked just fine on ICS as of last Friday (28 hours standby charge). I would hope that flashing ROMs/Kernels would not actually damage it.
Thanks for trying to help - I'm really confused since all the ratios look comparable to people who get great battery life, but for some reason, just seem to suck about 5x more battery for me, so its impossible to pinpoint one specific culprit. I thought it was a mis-calibration, but apparently that is just a myth.

Let me start by saying that I am not an expert, but the following tips helped me. I agree with the WiFi and the detail you provided was great. I see that you are running 4G, this will eat up the battery. Your ROM may have a toggle for the 4G (LTE) and 3G (CDMA). If you have WiFi available I would use that. You may want to turn off the NFC (system setting>Wireless & Networks More....) unless you use google wallet or share screen alot. Also, I had horrible results with the Facebook app running in the background, which I have taken off my phone. I set a bookmark in dolphin browser instead of using the app.
If you are not seeing any improvements with in the next few battery cycles you may try wiping the battery stats in Recovery. The first ROM I flashed from stock my battery life was all over the map and wiping battery stats helped. I ran the same Franco Kernel and was getting 2.5 -3 hrs of screen time. Hope this helps.
also, get CpuSpy from the market, and see which speeds your cpu is using (or not using).
Not that this will help software issues but Sprint is giving away a free 2100Mah extended battery with the door. You just have to pay for the shipping. No scam at all, I think they know that they have a glitchy piece of product and need to help calm us down. Just call telesales and tell them you own a Gnex.
CPU Speeds
Almost exclusively at 384 or 729 mHz, capped at 1026.

So that means that the CPU isn't going into deep sleep, which is an issue.
All I can suggest is reflash with a full wipe, and reinstall the apps you can, and slowly weed out any rogue apps that could be causing said issue.

Deep Sleep
Sorry, I meant that when awake, the vast majority of the clock speeds are 384 and 729. I am in deep sleep approximately 75% of the time.
If no solution comes up in this thread, I will try re-flashing to stock JB/stock JB kernel tomorrow night to see if it just needed a few recharge cycles to stabilize, and if not, if wiping/reinstalling helps.

Did u flash francos kernel yet ?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes - every process/screen is drawing the typical percentage of power use (~50% screen, 8% Phone Idle, 8% cell standby), but the battery is draining 4x faster than it should. Francos app shows me running at completely standard voltage, and I'm on the powersave mode. I think it must be a battery indicator/stats issue, otherwise the proportions would be all off.

One hour on regular battery

I must be doing either something really wrong or else...
My battery last me a little over one hour on standard battery (original rom+root) and that's me even using lean kernel. I've seen on forum some people were able to get as much as four hours of their screen why is it with my phone I'm only about to do so little?
What's the best so to see what's going on with my phone, who eats my battery, which apps are doing something that they shouldn't.
It really is killing me, I want to be able to enjoy my phone longer.

to save power I completely switched over 3G (by turning off 4G (LTE))
on the top of that whenever I can I always switch WiFi on to switch to WiFi instead of 3G and whenever WiFi is not available I always turn it off.
and here is a kicker: I also use Ultimate Juice Defender (w/ pretty aggressive settings (turning data on only every 15 minutes)

Why is my battery "done" ? I blame Sandy as before that it was fine, I'd easily do close to 2h of Screen time (at least 1h30m), now after Sandy due to reception that I'm getting right now I think that's why I'm getting so little now..

it's not like Sandy moved in or anything... Sandy is already gone and people (including me) heavily rely on their phones to communicate with others and so am I, so I need my phone more then I did before and if it's dying half way through the day that's a problem for me.

Your awake / screen on ratio looks pretty nutty to me. Basically your phone was awake for 4 hours, and your screen was on for 1 hour. Titaniumbackup kept your phone awake for 38 minutes; why is that?

Turn off location services and only turn it on when you need to. It's easy to toggle this by placing a Location services shortcut on your homescreen. This, for me, has had the largest impact on my idle battery usage. With location on, batt would drain around 2 to 3% per hour. Now it takes 3 hours idle to take the battery down 2%.

Your awake / screen on ratio looks pretty nutty to me. Basically your phone was awake for 4 hours, and your screen was on for 1 hour. Titaniumbackup kept your phone awake for 38 minutes; why is that?

I think Titanium Backup was doing backup and then uploading it to Dropbox (happens once or twice a week at night)
Google Talk and/or Google+ is closed (and even cleared from recent task upon completion of using them)
location service I use, I'm sharing my location with some other people, but i'll give that a shot to test it.
thank you for your suggestions)

Screenshots too please.
Thank you!
This is mine.......
Phone configuration:
Omega 9.1 ROM
Perseus 29.1 Kernel
Mobile data - GSM/WCDMA AUTO
Vibration Haptic Feedback turned off
Brightness Level Auto(lowest)
All Sync Turned off
GPS/Automatic Location off
Notification lights off
Usage: Moderate
Instagram
Facebook
Texting (A lot of WhatsApp)
Gmail
Flipboard
Watching Videos
Occasional Calls
And I know theres another post that has more views that shows people posting up their battery stats.
What i want is details, not just numbers. Would definitely help a lot of users out there with everyones input.
Once again, Thanks!!
Could help if u switch it to gsm only when u don't need to surf net and 3g only when u need the Internet. It drains battery when it keeps switching

That is pretty nice, but i the first day i got the phone i had like 8,5hours on disolay dunno what was the whole time on battery, notification led on, brightness off (lowest) - this might be the main reason, gps off, always data or wifi on (i need to be connected with the world ) stock 4.1.1
Now i am using auto brightness and i get like 6-7 hours on display, sometimes 8, and everything is the same except that brightness is set to automatic, still i get full day everytime, sometimes even 1,5 day which i hate bcoz charginh in the middle of the day is nasty when you are busy with all the tasks that you get during day. All in all best battery life so far as in device, i just dont get it why somebody wouldnt want this phone with that battery life, if note III will have better life im pretty sure u will survive 2 days with heavy usage
EDIT: sometimes im working with my brother and he has galaxy nexus, we were both playing with the phones during the day and i had 56% left, he had 9% and i had more time on display, he had to charge it 3 times that day, i plugged it when i was going to sleep
I just sold
Y GNex. Hopefully will get Note 2 tomorrow
Battery life on Gnex sucks big time

Hi, can you please let us know what rom, kernel and your phone configuration?
My battery life fluctuate around 3 to 4 hours on screen. Saw some of the users have 9 hours. Dont have any idea how to get that actually
There's an entire duplicate of this thread just a few posts away.

I know. But its nothing in detail. It just shows numbers. The reason for my post is for users to contribute their detailed configuration for their phones such as ROMS, Kernels etc, that lead up to their battery life. Its all about the details.

All of which is useless in the end. My usage habits and app installs will impact battery life differently than yours no matter how "exact" our settings are at an exact moment.
Can we please move beyond this silly notion of some holy grail of configuration? Use your phone! Ignore quadrant scores and whether I get 9hrs and you get 10.5 hrs. Those numbers will never be consistent, nor should they matter. If you're getting 2hrs of battery life, then maybe you have an issue worth solving.
If there were a singular combination that made everything run on platinum and 50000 hrs of screen time, trust me: we would know about it.
I plead to everyone: stop with the quest for "best". It isn't going to happen. Find what's best for you.

Running 4.1.2 clean ROM 4.0.5 with a 1.92ghz mod and custom modem I usually get about 15-30 hours depending on screen on time. I can safely stream google music all day to my Bluetooth about 6 hours and only drain 15-20% turning WiFi and GPS off helps a lot. Also set sync to off. Here is a screen shot after a 10 hour work day

Hi guys!
I own Note2 till January but I never had good battery life! I dont know where is a problem. Can I have bad battery? My phone is rooted because on stock rom is my battery life worse.
Now Iam running Hurricane rom, bloatware I removed immediately, I used kernel mod for better battery performance but I cant get more than 3-4hours of screen time. I dont play any games, just browse the internet, mostly I am connected on wifi, sometimes Facebook or Messenger, nothing more. Please help me. Thanks

[Q] Is there ANY way to save battery without rooting my device?

Hi XDA members and developers. I just got my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 International Version. 3 weeks old currently. I don't want to void any warranty itself. Is there any way folks? I lose 2% and hour just standby. and 10% and hour in Wi-Fi use.
WiFi - Moderate Use
SMS - Moderate Use
Cellular Data - OFF and GSM Only mode
PowerSaving Mode
Sync Off
Carrier - Sun Cellular Philippines
I posted my current device condition and status and downloaded application.
Please help me. I believe that SGN2 is a beast when it comes to battery.
Or If root is the solution. Give me tips.
There is nothing wrong i can see in your image 1. You have kept screen on almost half the time. it was even not fully charged (appr 95%) and still after 2 hrs of use it is about 83%. 12 % use with nearly 1 hr screen on time is normal when you have poor network.
Look to network, hardly you had 5-10 min good network, otherwise all the time you have it poor coverage, which is most juice drainer.
Thanks dr. Ketan

Dr. Ketan thanks for that advice. I tried other carrier and it is now good and mostly green network. You're the best. I read all your posts and it is very helpful. A thanks meter to you. If ever I will root I will look to your post in How to root Galaxy note 2. Thank the doctor.
And last question. How about in my image 2 which is the stats of wakelock detector? Is that normal? the 1013? It bothers me a lot every time I look to wakelock. I know rooting can improve battery life but it's not my option right now. Thanks!!

Your wakelock are normal. Don't worry about it. As dr.ketan said your network drains more.

Turn off the phone.
You have kept screen on almost half the time.
There is a battery saving option in the S Pen menu.
He he. Most smartphones can never hope to drop only 10% in an hour of screen on time. My i9505 drops that much in 30 minutes.
