New nexus owner - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Ordered a nexus today and was checking out the forums over here, little research on what is needed to load up ROMs and what ROMS were out there, so many choose from I can't read them all. What's a few I should check out. I like to be able to them the hell out of the ROMs.
I feel like I hit the ROM mother load, no device I have had has this much developer support. Nice upgrade from the thunderbolt

Welcome, it depends on which device you have. Seeing you had a Tbolt like myself, I'm guessing Verizon. The Verizon galaxy nexus has a lot of support. My honest favorite ROM is one over on Rootzwiki it is basically stock plus emoji and power menu. Very fast very stable.
For a GSM I'm running purity and loving it. Very very stable and fast.

Welcome ! If you want a rom with a lot of custom mods , go with AOKP build 30. Its in the development thread . I'm glad you liked your Gnex, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

All the evos! Dang how many did they produce? You must have millions!
Seriously though, I really like the AOKP Builds. Build 30 just released and its based on the newest release 4.0.4. AOKP also has a ton of extra features!

Yeah finally android is trying to be smooth UI with the nexus like the iPhone UI. For roms aokp is pretty much the way to go. At least that's where to start, then move on from there should you chose to do so.
Well actually I had 5 OG Evos and 3 E3D's

What's The Best Verizon Galaxy Nexus JB ROM

I just got my Nexus 7 in the mail on Tuesday and I love it and I was thinking about switching Roms on my galaxy nexus and I had jellybean roms on my mind to switch to since I'm so used to it from the Nexus 7 and I wanted to know whats the best one out by far thanks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Just try them and see which you like. You're going to get responses from someone on every single ROM... There's no perfect or best ROM out there. Its all personal taste.
U right I just wanted to know what is the top preferred one b4 I start running through them all

I heard good things about Bugless Beast and have been very happy.
Only one I tried and have no reason to switch.

Or just stock 4.2.2 but I've been running jellybro lately and it's right up there.

There is no real point in these 'best rom threads', as mentioned before, it's based on opinion. Some will like X rom, some will like Y. Some won't like any... it's just a matter of searching the development sections (AND NOT POSTING THIS THERE!!) and deciding on what you feel you'd like. Some include certain features that others don't. Lets bare that in mind

MIUI why isn't it popular?

hi all i've been lurking in nexus forums lately and i found miui ( 4.1 is released ) to be totally beautiful and gorgeous it has a really nice theme to it , + it have a ton of customizables ...but there's only about 50 k views ,,why is that so ? it seems to be a well made rom ...so is it so unpopular? i don't have a nexus yet though
because it looks like an iphone. alot of people dont like that look.

Some people like the aosp versions. Generally people have different preferences. I used to love MIUI and use it frequently until I came to the gnexus where the whites were not up to my expectations. However today jb version of MIUI is out and I'll be giving that a go. Hopefully will stick with it.

I'm not sure about the others, but i've been in the android sphere for over 2 yrs and i never flashed a miui rom. iOS like UI's just don't interest me.

This for me also.
Saying it looks like an iPhone isn't the real reason because you can customize MIUI much easier with it's built-in theme engine - there's hundreds of themes available for it that looking NOTHING like an iPhone and NOTHING like aosp as well.
The reason it isn't popular here is because it runs like crap on the galaxy nexus. If you popped in over at the Desire HD or SGSII forums you'll see it's one of the top ROMs used there because it runs beautifully on those devices.
oh so miui isn't optimized for nexus ? one more thing is there a difference between aokp , aosp , cm10 ?
I don't like closed source ROMs plain and simple. Release your source so others can build on your success.

It doesn't have to look like iOS at all. I have run Miui with Apex Launcher and it looks nothing like an iPhone.

I just tried it out and it can't currently hold a candle to Jelly Bean in terms of UI smoothness. Deal breaker for me. Also doesn't seem as stable, and chews through battery.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It is not as smooth as other roms. I like miui a lot, just not on nexus yet. Hope the smoothness comes back.
you guys that have never tried and think its too much like the iphone check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hICCWO8vaXU
It doesn't take advantage of GPU rendering and therefore is God awful slow and painful to view. Basically its not at all optimized for the nexus. You can change the scrolling style on the launcher, or use apex/nova, but as a workaround its a poor trade-off.

Why you ask? Because they refuse to release source.
sent from my Galaxy Nexus running RasBean!!!!
1. i'm not particularly fond of its smoothness or appearance. i ran it on my evo for about a day, just to see what all the fuss was about, but was not terribly impressed.
2. closed source. not because i really care either way about re-contributing to the community (sorry guys), but because i've spent enough time working with slightly-less-than-reputable foreign programmers to be cautious of it. before you start ranting about how i'm some kind of racist/anti-chinese douchebag, just stop. i'm not even suggesting that there are sneaky things going on, because it's awfully hard to hide those kinds of things from the rest of the community. their fierce determination to keep all their code/modifications to themselves, for some reason, just makes my spidey sense tingle.
guys today they just updated it to jellbean making it smoother
It's just not butter!!

Why are there no Sense roms?

I'm surprised no one has made any sense roms for the Gnex yet. Is it not as simple as porting over a different phone's rom and adding the on-screen keys?

2) most people who bought the Nexus do not like sense

theres a lot of framework needed for Sense, and it runs deep. If you've had an HTC phone like the Rezound u see how it's impossible to totally strip Sense down to aosp, and vice versa. Since its not supported by HTC, someone would have to basically do it from scratch, I don't think most devs find it worth the time/effort to try it. I did however see Paullie Vicious start work on one a few months ago, but nothing really came of it
We have nexus cuz most of us do not like sense. Plus its too bloated

Why? Because everything is vanilla android? That is the whole point of the nexus. Nobody bought the nexus because they wanted sense ports... they bought it for the clean android android experience.

I don't know.. I didn't buy the nexus for a aosp experience.
I didn't buy it for sense either.
Now I have a droid incredible I've used sense, but with the amount if memory sense would be great for this phone. I do kinda hate limited by aosp only.. it would be nice to have variety honestly.
There really isn't a reason to have 50+ Roms running around when most include all the same features and optimizations.

You guys answering the OP's question arnt helpful at all.:sly:
OK so there is two ports happening and are in progress and just going into work.
There is a Sense 4.0 port by Nello92 & a team. He has been working on the SOB since the release of the Sense 4.0(March) now u probably wonder, "March??? WTF is taking so long!?!??!"
Well there are 3 things stopping him & the team.
1. SD doesn't work properly.
2. He has a life he needs to live so he does this on his free time
3. He is making this almost from scratch ( using a Nexus S port as base)
Now there is a Sense 3.6 port that has just started(no thread yet) because everyone says they've given up since no one has the answer tot he SD issue.
Nello92 is a stubborn SOB and believes(HELL TO THE YEAHYE!!!) it is possible to fix SD.
So in his eyes, development will continue.
Sense 3.6 is a new concept, so keep your eyes peeled for a thread.

I know right??? I wanna try out Sense 4. The first Skinned Android ROM that caught my Eyes(& Motoblurr). Touchwiz can die IMO(not offending the Touchwiz lovers, I know u nex users are out there waiting for a proper port).

Well I mean.. I did buy the nexus because its an upgrade worth getting. Can't technically say but in my eyes the pinnacle of the android devices, similar to the droid incredible. Even though the nexus relay doesn't have a lot of Roms. I guarantee it will go down in history as a great device like the incredible.
So I got this because I knew development was great, a lot of users jumped ship here from the incredible forum. It was free, specs are fantastic, the size fits my hand greatly. I did also buy it because it had jelly bean, well could get jelly bean.. and because I knew aosp is particularly fast. So in a sense yes I did kinda buy it for aosp but not in a literal sense.
I dunno.. I kinda wished there was some new type of OS I guess. You do get tired of the same stuff.
Touchwiz comes to mind..

The answer given is probably correct though; not many gnex owners are interested in sense. Or touchwiz. Or some other bloated ui.
If you feel sense is that important to have, you kind of bought the wrong phone. A quick search would have shown there are no sense ROMs.

From my understanding its kinda in a broken state like the port for the incredible. And you have to re root unless its been fixed?

Anything like ViperRom for the Galaxy Nexus?

There is a ROM for most popular HTC phones called "ViperRom". It is probably the most insane ROM I've ever seen, simply because of the sheer amount of tweaks.
The greatest feature I have seen on it is live, on the go framework tweaking. Load some .pngs into your phone, and use the built in editor to select them and use them as images in your status bar, such as the battery, signal, wifi, or ring mode images. There is no installable theme or .mtz file needed to theme the images; just select them from the tweaks menu.
Is there any ROM that has this ability or can be built to add this ability for the GSM Galaxy Nexus? Because that would be awesome.
nope. just a whole bunch of aosp ROMs that are almost exactly alike

You bought a galaxy NEXUS. Not "sense-box-2230349039" or "blur-spaz-X08" or whatever the hell else you're looking for.
If you got a NEXUS device hoping that you'd be surprised by sense/b2g/windows/Android2.2/MacOS/whatever-else to be available...and working without show-stopping bugs...You have no idea what a NEXUS device is.
Nexus:
Get's updates straight from google (+yakju +takju -toro -toroplus...there's often a middle man) or in simpleton terms...
ANY DEVELOPERS WHO BOUGHT A NEXUS ARE FANS OF ANDROID AND WANT TO BUILD ANDROID. NOT SOME AFTERTHOUGHT SKIN WITH CLOSED/SEMI-CLOSED/"SOON-TO-BE-AVAILABLE" SOURCE.
If you came in to the game just to cry about the lackluster roms you shouldn't own the phone.

You will likely never get a Sense ROM on the Nexus and if you do it will be a port from another device. If you enjoy sense, you should stick with HTC devices. I came from a Sensation that had 1.9 million sense ROMS with few AOSP offerings.
The Nexus is the exact opposite. It's going to give you a 'vanilla' Android experience without the skins that you'll see from other manufacturers.
For me, I love the stability of the 'stock' builds and I can get enough customization through APEX launcher and some creativity.
Here is a great example of how much you can customize this device (and mind you, Black Bear is doing all of this without root): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804627

I guess I just had the wrong idea about the nexus. I kind of thought it was the phone that would have the most development, be it ROMs being ported, built, or whatever. Currently my prepaid Virgin Mobile Optimus V has a wider selection of "different" ROMs than the Nexus does. I guess I was wrong. I was by no means trying to start a fight, however, so I sincerely apologize if anything I said offended you in any way.

Yeah I have seen the forums for sense phones. It's like the Nexus forums, but replace the "AOSP" label before all the ROMs with "Sense". Like I said above, I kind of just thought the nexus was the phone that had the widest variety of development. I'd love to be able to try out sense or touchwiz or motoblur on my phone, even if I am a fan of stock android. I guess this us not the phone for that.
