Note 2 $299 or SG3 $49? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I just bought the note 2 a couple of days ago, but I just saw that the SG3 is now $49 at best buy and Amazon wireless. Just was going to get everyone's opinion on if the stylus and size is worth the $250. I'm a upgrade eligible customer for att. And also is the 2gig of ram a big difference over the sg3s 1.

To me no comparison at all, note 2 all the way.
Now In reality, depends on if size is important factor for you. No, then Note 2. Yes, then try your note for a few days then go to store and try out display unit gs3 and make your decision then.
Functionality of spen is a must for me and worth it for me. Sorely miss it and the apps for it if I was on another device.

Not sure how it would work with gs3 but try opening up several video windows at the same time a nd toggle between them. No slow down and all run smoothly. More ram never hurts.

I've gone back and fourth between the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and GSIII and I must say the Note 2 wins hands down. While I do enjoy the Galaxy S III's form factor, I do not like care for the Qualcomm Processor. I also wanted a Black S3 which is not available on AT&T. The Note 2 wins for me because of the awesome processor and 2Gb of ram, plus the screen is better.
I am a huge accessorizer when it comes to my phones and a downside of the Note 2 is that there are not that many cases yet. I'd still go for the Note 2. Its very future proof. Not too mention, who can turn down Exynos + LTE???

I think the $49 is only today, at least at Best Buy. And the Amazon price might be new customer only, not upgrades.
I got AT&T to price match Walmart on my Note 2 for $199. Many others did too by calling customer service.
I like the size, battery, and S-Pen too much. $200 isn't much when you consider the phone should last 18-24 months. I think the up front premium will be worth it over the life of the phone.

Well if you are switching carriers like me, Amazon has Sprint Note II for $99 and S3 Free!
I have been with AT&T for 10 years and I'm over the drama over data. Especially since I have 5GB and am disabled and home with full wi-fi throughout my house and they are trying to charge me overages?? Not to mention the crappy service and consistent lies!! Only time I really even use my phone is for hospital trips... Paying more than the Simply Everything with simply nothing!! Too bad I have 11 other lines I'm going to switch from my business, home, and family, and TV....
Switch on over!

The white Note 2 is 174 at Amazon btw

Note 2. Period.

Get the note 2 and you wont look back..:good::good::good:

The US galaxy s3 has a slower dual core processor than the quad core exynos processor in the Note 2. My girlfriend has a galaxy s3 and my note performs noticeably better than it. Battery life is significantly better as well. Also, the Note 2 has a better, non-pentile display.

Fair price

The amazon wireless price for the note 2 is $174.99 for the AT&T version. In my opinion, you are definitely getting $125 more phone for your money so I think it's a fair price.

Note 2 is superior in every aspect. The only issue is if you want to deal with the extra size.

Note 2 FTW also youll never run out of juice hahaha . 3100 mah will last you 2 days without charge thats coming from stock 4.1 moderate use .

I appreciate everyone's input. Yes it was a one day sale at best buy and Amazon wireless. I guess I was thinking about downgrading and using that money to get a 64gb card and a case. Oh well. I love the note 2. Highly recommend it to anyone.

I started a new att line and had a s3 while being on a buddys family plan. I checked out my credit and I was approved for 4 lines haha. So I put it on craigslist and I was getting my new line activated and a note 2 was the choice just based on screen size. Guy met me in walmart (note 2 for $279.99) and he bought it and used that cash towards the note ($300 cash). I got it just for the screen size but there is a huge noticable difference in speed and battery life on this thing. Note 2 buddy trust me and the titanium one is beautiful.

I have both phones and galaxy s3 also has 2gb ram so it's a wash there but the screen is pentile and not so as good as note 2. Battery life also sucks really bad on galaxy s3 and cpu is ok but not as fast as note2. However form factor of sgs3 is better then note 2 as phone is smaller and easier to use and manage.
Note 2:
Better screen
Faster cpu
Bigger screen
Bigger battery
Limited rom support so far or none existent
Big phone needs two hands to manage properly
Phone never gets hot at least not so far
Feels like better build quality
Spen
Sgs3:
Screen is smaller and pentile
Poor battery
Slower cpu
Phone size is perfect for carrying and using single handed
Lots and lots of rom support
Phone gets hot at bottom when playing games on watching videos annoys the crap out of me.
Crappier feel and build quality
No spen
I prefer the note 2 and hope this helps.

You should ask this in S3 forum too. So you can hear both sides. They will tell you how bad the Note 2 just same as we tell you how the S3. Hehehe

[Q] Upgrading from GSII...Note vs Note II opinions?

Hey all, I like my GSII a lot, but I feel I need an upgrade. I skipped the GSIII because I knew something would be along soon after. Now I am looking at getting a Note, but i'm wondering really hard whether it's worth it to spend the extra $150-200 to get the newer Note II over the original Note. The original really isn't that old, and the specs are still pretty decent. It's the software that seems to be the biggest upgrade. That split-screen feature looks frickin awesome.
Now, I like the squarer design of the original Note, but I like the extra features of the newer one. I wonder if they will be able to port the newer ROM to the older hardware?
Anyway, anyone thinking about doing the same or have any opinions?

I actually like T-Mobile. Why do you think it's not good? I live in NYC so I guess I get the best coverage they have, but I also like their low cost 4G plans. I have the Walmart plan right now.
I am leaning towards the Note II though. It just looks so OP.
Between the Note and Note II, Note II hands down. Better processor, bigger screen, twice the RAM and an improved S-pen.

Also, the Galaxy Note 2 is apparently prepared for future LTE upgrades that T-Mobile might make in the future...
So that might be something to consider

I guess i'll go for the Note II. Just means i'll have to wait a little longer to save up enough money.
You know I have the same question I like the s3 and the note2 and really dont care about the screen size. If the note2 have all the same features like the s3 gestures i will jump on it.

I'm pretty sure the "full" off contract price is gonna be around $700. They have one listed on Amazon for that much http://goo.gl/d9vMg. But when you add tax and shipping, you're talking almost $800. I always get mine from Craigslist though. Usually a high end unlocked phone will go for $500 on there, but I think the Note 2 might be as much as $600. If you're vigilant you can get a good deal, plus you save yourself tax and shipping.
Edit: The unlocked white one is even more expensive at Amazon http://goo.gl/JepOC

[Q] Is the Note II worth 2 Jelly Bean Galaxy S III's?

I'm good for a phone upgrade through T-Mobile now and Walmart has the GSIII for $150, which is exactly half of what they will sell the Note II for when that releases in the near future. (SOURCE: http://www.tmonews.com/2012/10/leak...t-for-galaxy-note-ii-windows-phone-8-devices/). There's no question that the Note II is the best Android phone out there, but I'm also paying the most for it and in this case twice as much as the alternative. Knowing that the GSIII will get an update to Jelly Bean making the list of different features even smaller, is the Note II worth the extra $150? Features that come to mind that won't ever make it to the GSIII are the S-Pen, larger non Pentile screen, and multi-screen. Do you Note II users notice or use these features regularly?

It's kinda funny that you're stressing about paying $149 or $299 when alot of us will be paying ~$700 full price for the Note II when it comes out.
Don't forget, the Note II will have a slightly faster processor and more RAM, which will help make it faster as well. So, yeah, bigger and better screen, faster CPU, more RAM, S-Pen, no lag. Yeah, Note II will be the best and fastest phone on the market until sometime next spring/summer.
Why do Americans never mention the price they are forced to pay a month?
No one is forced to pay for cellular service. It's a choice to pay it... If I didn't agree with the price I wouldn't get cellular service. I will gladly do it too.

Easy..if u a creative person..then, note 2 is for u..no matter what the price or contract is
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Well the contract shouldn't matter since they're the same between alternatives. I'm going to get the contract regardless. And I'm not a creative person, so I won't be using the stylus much for drawing but I can see myself using it for other purposes, though also very much doable without the stylus as well. Do people notice the extra performance over the S III during their daily use? US S IIIs also have 2GB of RAM.
If money isn't the problem here, then you shoukd go for the Note2. Not only it is faster and more powerful, but it will probably be the first Samsung phone to Get Android 4.2 as I believe the next flagship Android based Samsung phone will be the S4.

isn't the sgs3 actually slower (at least in feel) than the nexus running JB? i've heard that it's not as smooth as it should be.

That's still your choice to sign that contract. I am a firm believer of my previous statement. If I don't agree with the terms then I won't sign the contract and walk away. If people did this instead of signing and then complaining I am willing to bet the mobile landscape would be better for us. We wouldn't need the broken government to try and do it for us.
Well, if you feel like waiting another month, the SGSIII may be much cheaper on Black Friday. I have read that Sprint will be selling it for $50. I am unsure if other carriers will follow suit, but I assume they will.
That being said, I really want the Note II and am set on getting it. Size, speed and functionality.

Nexus 4 impossible to find, might go Note II

I am in need of a new phone, looking to switch to pre-paid Straight Talk, or possibly ATT contract, and say F. you Verizon.
With the Nexus 4 M.I.A. and not being back for sale for another 3 weeks, I am tempted to just say F. waiting for it, and get the Note II instead. Thing is, I have owned all three Nexus phones, I like the Nexus line, but the Note II does look extremely tempting
Or go on Cragslist and pay a premium for a new Nexus 4, but that rubs me the wrong way, paying $150 more for it, than I should be able to buy it directly from Google. But I think LG screwed up big, didn't calculate how many Nexus 4's would sell, and only had a small amount ready at launch. I am curious to see how it goes next month, I bet the same thing, back on sale in the Play store, and sold out immediately.
Note II ? Wait for the Nexus 4 stock to replenish, but afraid it will sell out immediately right away again ? Or Craigslist Nexus 4 ?
I would definitely look at the note 2. Nexus 4 should be a hot seller but its all for that price. Android phones shouldnt be this expensive as the note2 but this is probably the only phone I'd pay this much money for.
Never been so happy with a device like this before. So snappy and yet so so many features. The size takes some time to get used to. I just found out there is a black/grey quadcore s3 lte model being sold in Hongkong which is definitely more to my liking than this giant device. If you have good lte coverage then forget aboutthe nexus 4.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using Tapatalk 2
Go for the note 2 lol, it will reduce some nexus fans and hopefully the phone will last longer on the play store lol
You are in the exact same spot I was in... I actually had one on order and 4 days later got a "you are on backorder" email, so I canceled the stupid thing and got the n2. Best decision I've made as far as phones go. I had the galaxy nexus and most recently the One X and I can tell you that neither hold a candle to the n2...I suspect the same with the nexus 4. You will fall in love with this screen... I promise you.

[Q] Should I buy the Note 2 again?

I bought the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 a few times before returning to my iPhone 5. I have grown to hate my iPhone 5. The only thing I love it about are the cases I have. It has AppleCare+ on it which I really like but that's not cutting it. The phone has a very loose power button which causes a rattle. My iPhone 5 has also had dust in the camera lens since day one. Call me OCD but I've actually gone through about 5 iPhone 5's since sticking with this one. Apple QC is absolutely atrocious. I've had my issues with Samsung phones but not like Apple.
I absolutely hate the screen on the iPhone 5. I hate it!!! I don't think I can wait until the Galaxy S4. I want to be back on the Android ecosystem so that way I will have an easy transition to the S4. I also loved the S Pen, as I've had the Note 2 before. I returned it because I was bothered by the lack of cases and support for it. I always go back to that pathetic iPhone.
So is the Note 2 still worth it in Feb 2013? I don't think any other phone can come close in performance yet?

Not sure if you want to wait a little bit but some signs point to a new Note 3 soon (but if it comes to AT&T, it might be a little bit before it reaches these shores). Otherwise, there have been some really good deals @ Best Buy and such. Or... you know... stick with your iPhone, you sheep LoL

I feel that you'll be fine because I don't think the s4 could replace your Note 2. The only reason why I say this is because of that extra half inch that the note would provide. For sure the s4 will be a lot quicker than the note 2 but was the note 2 ever slow to begin with. I also feel the same way with my i phone 5. I went from iPhone 5 on Sprint to s3 on ATT then the iPhone 5 on ATT then I am using the Note 2 on ATT now. I feel that since in previously years I've been using strictly Apple on my devices switching to the s3 and note 2 is real "innovation."
I also feel the same about the lack of any real nice cases for the note compared to the iPhone.
All in all I think you'll be fine if you decide to pickup another note.

You can basically get the phone at any retail shop outright but they never go on "sale" outright. Check the websites, click on the phones, then select the "no contract" option and it will show you the full price (e.g. Best Buy... btw not trying to push them it's just that I was doing the same thing you are a few days ago for another phone... has the Note 2 AT&T for $799.99 and the iPhone 5 outright for $699.99 16gb on both). As for the international version, I'm not too sure how this will work out with that retarded bill that passed about unlocks and whatnots.

I buy phones outright all the time so I'm pretty familiar with it. I just can't find anything cheaper than $649 anywhere.
No way the Note 3 is due this Spring. The Note series is typically released late Summer / early Fall. I expect the Note III in Aug / Sept.
Now the Galaxy S phones are released in late Spring mostly. The S IV is rumored for a April worldwide release. And May U.S. release.
I would get the Note 2 right now, best phone ever. And the S-pen rocks. Amazing battery life, super fast smooth.
Or if you gonna wait, wait for the Note 3 = better upgraded version of the S4, bigger screen + S-pen.

Yeah that's insane! AT&T is the way to go... damn I should look there (I for no reason at all assumed they'd be the priciest)
If you live in a fairly big city you should look on Craigslist for yours. I was so ready to pay ATTs price of 649.99 but then someone on Craigslist sold me a brand new one for 500.... Honestly I couldn't be happier with this phone, love it.

I don't trust craigslist phones myself and like the option of maybe returning it if i need to. I would go to att and t and buy from them. It is the cheapest price around that I found. I checked best buy and Amazon. Best buy was ridiculous. I ened up buying outright from at and t..not happy about the $710 but such is life. Resale on the Iphone will be way better for a longer period of time.

The $50 offer is with doing an upgrade through best buy mobile. Nothing to do with the actual price of the phone. **** you could upgrade to a free phone and get a $50 gift card. And is that really your determining factor for whether we'd stay in business or not. Lol not that I care much because I'm almost done my degree but BBY is gonna be around for a while. Even if it doesn't get your support. Still the number one electronics retailer in the world. That just isn't a super strong statement right now.

Nono... Just a strong observation from a former employee of many years who has seen bad decision after bad decision over the last decade and got off the boat before it tries to turn itself into radio shack when they themselves are failing. There wasn't much money in the bank when I left and looking at the last 2 quarters, it dwindles down even further as the stock that used to be around 40 went down to 15 (almost to 10 last week) in a very short amount of time. Guess who went through the same thing? CompUSA and Circuit City and what you get left is either a buyout which would shrink the company to make a profit it would need to stay viable, or bought out to be Amazon's showroom for a fee instead of free like it is now. The more BBY/BBYM price matches, the more profit margin is lost so that money has to come from their bank to break even. Keep on this track and it will go off a cliff. Don't get me wrong, I want BBY to survive and all but becoming Radio Shack is not the way to go.
Congrats on your degree! You can now watch from the outside instead of in objectively.

Yeah in for 4, Started a thread on Slickdeals last night. Switching from Sprint.
If people here are anywhere near slickdeals people you might need to say "2 year contract needed" , LOL.
Dang just my luck I just ordered the Note 2 on Friday. I have to wait until I tomorrow and see if they still have any 99 cent refurbs. Upside was the phone was 200 before taxes but I could save myself 199.
att knows galaxy IV will put note ii to shames? maybe that' why they want to get rid of note II?

Ok the galaxy S4 will not put this phone to shame. Why cuz it has a better screen, and a few more features. Samsung loves people like you to go& buy the latest and the greatest!
As far as the refurbish goes. It just a bunch of phones that got returned for minor issues, bad charging ports, screen not coming on, phone stop powering on, etc. So that's why they're getting rid of them to the public. Not because of the S4 release. Why not make more money on something that was broken b4! It's a common practice in electronics business..
But me & refurbish  there's always the possibility that your going to run into some of those same issues. I've had friends with refurbish products, I've also owned some myself..
But hey for 99¢ why the he'll not right
Just my 2¢

I just ordered one this morning.
The down side, after upgrade fees and taxes it cost me $90.00. Still not too bad of a deal.
I'm considering adding a line to my account to upgrade from my gs3. I have fat fingers and typing on a larger screen may be easier for me. I am hesitant to get anything refurbished though. So many choices I just can't decide. I would hate to wait until Wednesday and be disappointed by the gs4 and all the refurbs gone.

Except for my current Note II every upgrade I've gotten from ATT over the last 3-4 years starting with my Blackberries have been refurb. Every one of them lasted. I was shocked, because I was worried also.
Obviously doesn't mean bad ones weren't put out. But my 2 cents is I've always saved 100-200 bucks getting the refurbs , and I've had great success with them.
Sucks now since I've upgraded to two Note II's over the past months and paid the $250.

ordered mine today! updating from an SGS Cappy. This little beast has done pretty well, running 4.2.2 now, albeit a little boggy.:good:
Just waiting on the wife to get home, I'm all over this.
I may just add the insurance to be safe.
I am a bit confused about the messaging though, I'm pretty sure we both get charged 30 a month for family messaging unlimited, but it is only 20 per person? There is no explanation on their website.
Should it be just 30 for both of us or 30 each?
I had the family messaging, it was $30 that includes all lines.

Thanks for this, OP! I ordered mine today to replace my s2. If it wasn't for the great price I would still be rocking it.

Just ordered 2 of them. Was a little confusing, I added the data plans, couldn't add a family texting plan all it would say is "current" so I think it will still be there, but whatever. Does anyone use Google voice for texting? Can I just eliminate a texting plan altogether?
Upgraded (via my mom's contract, heh heh) and I am SO excited. I have a GS2 running 4.1.2 but I know someone with a Note II and it's beautiful. I am so glad I looked at the AT&T site today, heh heh.
Thanks for the heads up! I got one for my wife and one for my daughter. Both are happy.
My 14 day refund period on my new Note 2 just ran out Friday. Argh why didn't I wait 3 more days! I had been waiting to decide on the HTC one and finally decided on the Note 2 just last week. I thought this price drop might happen but I assumed it would have been done already. Like after the HTC launch.
Oh well. That's life.
There is one saving grace. The store seems to have forgotten to reset my upgrade. So if something else is better I can still upgrade on the cheap.
I actually ordered the 99 cents Note 2 this afternoon. It was actually free. They have a $25 instant web promo going on also. But they won't "give" me $24.01. It just shows as $0 on my order slip.
I get new activation waived via ATT premier also for new lines. I added a line.
So will automatically switch newly activated line to flip phone. Cancel data. Switch my sim from my iPhone 5 to the Note 2.
Cancel the new line in one month. Total out of pocket cost ($315) for Note 2..
Not bad. $315 is cheaper than the $500 they are going used on craigslist and close to $600 on eBay.

I added the line to my family plan for 10 bucks a month , 10 x 24 = 240$ , no cancellation fee needed. I will keep the line because I can now upgrade every year.
