[Q] Using standard 128GB SD card in Note II via converter module? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I am wondering, if we could somehow use a standard sized SD card in our Note II obviously via converter module.
The thing I am interested is, could we put it between battery and back cover and will it fit in there or not.
Idea is to use a 128GB srandard sized SD card with something like this:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
And somehow fitting it under our battery cover. Dimensions of such a module are: 1.5 in x 1.3 in x 0.16 in
In a review of such a module some guy said: " Had to strip it down to a minimum so it takes less place, by getting rid of the 2 plastic/epoxy plates, and resoldering the ribbon..." so there is an option to make it even thinner.
Possible problems:
- phone not recognizing 128GB
- microsd connector losing connection
- back case not closing because module too thick (even after strip mod)
- microsd slot in note II points to the side, while it would be better to point downwards - since the module is "long"
Possible solutions:
- somehow glueing the module and microsd connector so it doesn't move/fall out
- somehow "brushing" inside of back cover or inside of the phone next to microsd slot, to get a few milimeters of required space, so back cover snaps on
- buying some kind of replacement back cover that has "more space" - something like extended battery - but again should have space, OR to remove such a battery to get space - but still something that doesn't add up more than like 1-2 mm.
- "twisting" the microsd connector from side to down so the module fits.
Has anyone done this, or considered doing this? Would this be possible, and how? Let the discussion begin

Dear tipsek,
Nice find... As i see from the advertisement that the module can read 128 gb sdcard... I wish i had both the module and 128 gb sd to test with my note2 since the storage capacity is very important for me... I am thinking that we can even use it outside of the back cover with an ordinary tpu back cover case so there may be no need to mod the phone parts but just a tiny hole side of the original back cover for the ribbon cable...
http://dx.com/p/sd-to-microsd-transflash-card-converter-module-27001
Kind Regards..

Should be possible, the Note II can support Cards upto 256GB. (It could be infinity ^__^, based upon the type of file system that is used.)
I personally would only use upto 64Gb, the ones that are available as micro SD. Or wait for the Sandisk gurus to release the 128 Gb Model

I agree best is to use microSD, but price of 128GB SD is only a few bucks higher than 64GB microSD and it will take some time for 128GB microSD to come to market plus they will be expensive.. So inbetween that time (like a year or so) when microSD 128 gigs even come out and have their prices dropped a lil, we could already be enjoying 128 gigs.
It would be ideal for someone who already has a 128GB SD card, to just order that converter module for 5$ and test this. Maybe like the guy above me suggested to put in TPU case and just have a small hole in batt cover.
Someone has to be the "test bunny" then we all buy this

Hopefully it won't be long till we can put an SDcard in a Case/Sleeve for our Galaxy Note2 that can communicate through NFC!
The clever guys at Moneto have already made a Google Wallet-esque payment gateway using either an iPhone or an Android phone, using their NFC chip in an SDCard. At the moment it just offers the payment solution, but that is a huge start!

This would be awesome.
Can you link to where you read someone's experience with doing this?

Yes I read it here:

Hello !
I DO love beer !
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081712
Unfortunately, I had to destroy this module (I'm the guy who reviewed it on DX !) and just keep the microSD connector, and use kinar wire to directly solder the SDcard !
At least I didn't have to destroy the cover plate !
And I tried the adapter intact with the card, and it was of course working... but unusable without destroying the NFC antenna.
Boujou bien,
K.

it works

i have one of these, it doesnt work in the galaxy note, but it does work with my S3, there is also a post on you tube , its a rubbish review but you can see it working http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaQIkAHbHoE this should be great with the galaxy mega 6.3, and yes I'd just tape it to the back i dont care if it looks ugly, its only me that will really see it. Im confident it will also take the 256SD card but havent tried,
i also have the little adapter which is in the you tube video which works brilliant on my s3 and it sadly doesnt work on the note, it might work on the note 2 but havent tried it yet...

Review of Smiley and Mini-strap usb cables w/lots of pics!

This is a review of Smiley Luminescence usb cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/Smi...I9300-S4-I9500-N7100-HTC-Sony-White-MCH-636B/ and Mini-digital Strap usb cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/3-i...r-Samsung-Sony-HTC-Etc.-Orange-Strap-CR-267A/
Since I'm on a roll with reviews from my recent tvc-mall order, here is another unique one you all might appreciate and enjoy! A typical usb to micro-usb cable is a boring piece of wire, nothing to get excited about. It took me awhile to search and to find something unique and fun to share with everybody. And for about $1 plus change - it's also a great value from tvc-mall.
First one is a Smiley cable. Just one look at it and you realize where the name came from. Both usb and micro-usb connectors have a light-up embedded smiley faces on one side and a round dot on another side. It looks super cool and highly visible in the dark. So once you have usb side connected to wall or car charger, both ends light-up and you will not have any problem finding your phone's micro-usb port to connect the other side of the cable in the dark. Cable itself is a flat noodle design. Feels and looks very durable, and comes in a variety of close to a dozen of different colors. One thing I do have to mention, I checked it with Galaxy Charging current app, and found that you will not be able to get full 2A charging speed. Perhaps there is some loss with current being used to light up smiley faces or wires being thinner, but honestly for $1.19 this is going to be the coolest charging/data cable in your collection.
Here is how it looks.

The other cable is a very short (a total of 4" end-to-end) multi-functional charging/data transfer cable which is equally unique. When you are traveling or on the go, dragging a spool of long cable often is not preferable. Finding the shortest cable is also a challenge because short cables are not as durable and often will not allow full speed charging. This one hits a mark in every aspect. It has a flat noodle design, dust caps on both of the usb and micro-usb connectors, and I confirmed it can charge your Note 2 at full 2A current!!! As a bonus, it has a unique built-in micro-sd card reader. The full usb connector has pins on both sides with one side supposedly being able to read data from micro-sd. OK, I tried it and even demonstrated in my pictures. I was NOT able to read micro-sd card, that didn't work for me. But who cares! For $1.32 you are getting one of the shortest and coolest looking charging and data cables which can take a full advantage of 2A charging. It even comes in 3 different color combinations. Definitely happy with this one as well, been using it with my extended battery for a few days now - very convenient to eliminate mess of long usb cables.
The pictures are below.

Too bad that the card reader aspect didn't work for you, perhaps the ones others have received may work. I guess you could use it as a way of storing/transporting additional micro-sd cards with you.

Guess what? I ordered and just received 2 more of these mini-strap cables and actually one reads micro-sd without a problem! So let's see, 1 out of 3 works Listen, for $1.32 it works just as a cable and considering you can put it on your keychain (that lanyard cap part latches on with two little hooks securely). So, I would recommend for anybody if you want to try your luck with it's built-in micro-sd card reader to order 3 of those lol!!!! At least that was my luck...

I have ordered from them in the past both using standard cheapest method and once with DHL upgrade. DHL upgrade is a bit pricey but will take you 3 days to get from China to US (I'm not kidding). Regular cheapest shipping is the usual 2 weeks you get with any ebay purchase. Because of my order history and my online write ups about their products - I get complimentary DHL upgrades One thing for sure, any time I get something which doesn't work they always credit back the price to my account.
Btw, I got a few tiny speakers from them, one bt and another one just with external aux connection, both have micro-sd card slot to turn it into little mp3 player - just mind blowing sound. Expect reviews soon!

[Q] Anyone thinking about or using the Samsung Galaxy Smart Dock with an Active?

I've spent the past day or so mulling over spending a pocketful of cash for a brand new phone these days, after so many years of grabbing up used hardware passed down by other people, I'm at a point where the current generation of phones (like the GS4A) are most certainly "powerful enough" to do some of the things that I'd like to do. My idea is this, as crazy as it might sound, is to build myself a nice desktop machine (which is on the planning board right now as well) but also get a brand new high end smartphone which I intend to use in manner like so:
- attach the high end smartphone to a dock (if one is available) that allows me to plug in a keyboard, mouse, and of course a high definition monitor (in this case with the GS4A, a 1920x1080 model to match the resolution, I don't need more than that
- when I'm at home I can simply put the phone on the dock and then it will become my "terminal" powering the desktop monitor, controlled by the keyboard and mouse, and running a terminal services/remote desktop application which then allows me to "remote in" to the desktop computer (which will be in another part of the room on the same network)
Yes, it does sound a bit crazy but it's what I have in mind. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has or owns the Samsung Galaxy Smart Dock Multimedia Hub as seen here:

I know that it's a bit expensive for what it is, but the capabilities it offers are perfect for my particular plans I have in mind. I've found it for a bit less on eBay and Amazon so, it's under strong consideration since I'd prefer to use such a dock instead of using an MHL adapter then that into a hub, etc - which would probably be an issue getting USB signals out at the same time as the HDMI for the monitor, and so on. A single dock doing all that (and offering 3 USB ports and audio output too) is far more realistic.
So, if anyone has such a dock could you comment on your experience(s) with it with the GS4A? I'm going over to the GS4 forum to look around for info - I'm just making an assumption that the dock works with the GS4A since it is a Galaxy device and that dock is supposed to be for all of them, more or less. The recessed USB port on the GS4A (because of the "rugged" casing design) might make it more difficult to attach, perhaps Samsung has one of those adapters to raise the microUSB plug on the adapter and make it flush. It's all part of my research now.
I wish I could get that "Flame Orange" version of the GS4A but I can't seem to locate a seller for it, I believe that's the International version of the GS4A and on eBay it's commanding prices in the $900 range and I simply cannot afford that much. I may even end up buying a GS4A used, who knows.
Already picked out my case, however, it's that Supcase Unicorn Beetle one in Yellow/Black, that thing is simply gorgeous.
Thanks for any input or information, it's appreciated.
Edit: I just checked and yes it appears to be compatible with the GS4A as noted on the "Supported Devices" support page, awesome.
I looked at that dock, and others as well, but have been waiting for someone else to check if it actually works with the Active or not... Maybe you
What I wonder is what happens to the rubber USB plug when the phone is in the dock. Does it just get crushed underneath, or is their a space for it? Maybe the plug will need to be removed completely, which is something I'm close to doing anyway since I didn't get this phone to use underwater anyway.
If you do decide to purchase, please post back and let us know...
If you look on the page you linked to, under compatible with, click "see all", and you'll note that the Active is listed on the second page - at least the AT&T model. In other words, it seems it would work!
I'd consider it myself if I had room for a third monitor on my desk.
Found this giant pic online. It looks like the piece in the middle can be taken out to help accommodate the rubber flap. I don't have one myself but it looks pretty solid.

Gotta love it when the ad says "SHIPS WORLDWIDE" but in this somewhat rare instance it can't/doesn't/won't ship to the US, go figure. Bleh.
Got a friend over in the UK, will ask her if she can order it for me, have it shipped to her then she'll send it my way.
I ended up getting an S4 Active in somewhat "horribad" cosmetic condition: was dropped by the previous owner < 2 weeks after purchase, the Dive Blue model from AT&T, and developed a typical "spider web" crack in the glass but the digitizer is still 100% functional and the LCD suffered no ill effects, missing the original battery cover/back plate and the original battery, but I got it for $100 so whatever, I'm a somewhat happy camper at this moment.
Working on getting an unlock code so I can use it with T-Mobile, was reading up on that AWS "unlock" as well to help with the data connection, will see how it all works out over the next few days/weeks I suppose.
It's damned fast, and even in spite of the crack and no back cover (I got a battery off craigslist for $30, not brand new but it works so that's a plus).
Still would like to get one of these docks so yes, I'd like to hear your experience when yours arrives, thanks.
Arrived the other day and i must say im impressed, it worked well with my phone and my wifes (S3), It came with an euro charger and an american charger but i just used my phone charger and it works, it shows in portrait but when the phone flips into landscape mode its fits the whole screen.
I had a chance to get one from Samsung at half price using that 50% coupon code they gave me for registering the phone to my account, but of course I forgot about it completely when I ordered a single battery the other day - DOH!!! Should have just put both of them in the cart and got both products for less than the regular price of just one of the docks.
But I'll live I guess. I had originally intended to use the dock as I said in the first post above: like it was a "computer" of sorts attached to a keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc; I realized that wasn't going to be a feasible situation for me so I've decided to go the opposite direction and do everything I can to be truly wireless meaning using a wireless charger and all data transfers to and from the phone using Wi-Fi, and maybe even using the Wi-Fi Direct or DLNA capability to send some "video" out from it as well, there are lots of possibilities.
Just bought a Jawbone JAMBOX for $50 on craigslist and for it's size it's quite amazing too, now paired with my GS4A and crankin' out some Rush.
We'll see what happens...
I know this smart dock works with the Note 3
Since we are talking about the Samsung multimedia smart dock, I tested this out and it works with the note 3 as well, if anyone is interested:

Faceplate mod = MicroSD card storage?

So I'm thinking to myself, this faceplate should be more useful then just a cosmetic attachment.
If you were to carefully cut out some small chamber into the back side of the faceplate you could probably make a way for storing Micro SDcards.
Seems like a simple enough an idea I thought, not sure if the magnets in it would effect the cards tho?
Why do this? 128s are still pricy, even 64's of a good brand are too. You could store a ton of movies/videos on a bunch of cards and always have them handy.
If your creative enough you could probably make enough room in the back of faceplate to glue in 2-4 of these:

I wish there was an OEM solution but I'm very tempted to attempt some sort of mod.
An other idea for modding the faceplate would be to some how instal a small camera, tho, not sure where someone get the hardware to do this tho... A professionally made HD camera attachment that would replace the shield however would be cool tho!

I think its a good idea but I'm wondering if the magnets would corrupt the card also. Electronics and magnets don't mix well.

Flash memory isn't really affected by magnets because there are no magnets used in it. You're thinking of floppies and HDDs.

Correction: not affected *as much*.
I would expect the card to work fine still. But magnets moving near any electronics induce a current, this can be the wrong polarity for the card and damage the gates, it could just enable a card read (with nothing to read to), it could reset a memory cell or it could do nothing. The latter is most common but the prior 3 are feasible and can occur.
I would try this, but the fact of the magnet may cause damage scares me... Right now I have 3 32GB cards, one inside and 2 in a little cardboard cut out taped to the back of my shield, pretty easy to move them in and out...

They fit pretty good, easy in and easy out, best part is it doesn't get in the way.
I looked this up to see if I was correct, and I was.
The only major problem with magnets and data storage comes from the hard drives that are not solid state drives. The problem is caused by the fact the this type of hard drive uses a magnetic field to read and write to the drive.
Under normal conditions moving a magnet past a coil of copper magnet wire by hand will only get you millivolts.

I am of the opinion that the shields magnet is so weak that even if a micro SD card could be affected by a magnetic field that it would need a much more powerful magnet to damage it. To be realistic the magnets in the shield faceplate can't even hold on to the fridge. When you take a piece of metal and drag it across the back of the faceplate, you will notice that there are actually too small separate magnets in the top and bottom centers of it. Giving you plenty of room to create a cavity or two, away form the magnets themselfs for the micro sd's.

Nice observation, I will test this tomorrow when I get mine! I'll leave one of my ancient 256mb cards in there for 5-7 days and then test. I think that under there could be a sweet place for SD cards great idea!!!

Yeah, the magnets not only affect the data itself, but were also bad for HDDs w/ platters, as the spindles could then damage the drives due to the magnet, iirc...
Regarding the faceplate, is the magnet in the screen or the faceplate? (Or both?)
If it's in the faceplate, could 3d-print a replacement faceplate to hold microsd cards (or even have a cable running from faceplate to back of Shield if rigging up something even more complex), and then fashion some non-duct-tape method of attaching the faceplate back to the Shield.
there are magnets in both, plate and screen.
They are placed in the upper and lower edges, but not in the middle.

I have had 0 issues with magnets and memory cards/ssd/flash drives. The link from the post you quoted tells why in better detail then I will.
HDDs use a magnet system to read and write the to the HDD, flash drives/ssd/memory cards don't work that way.

Price is currently at 19,42 EUR (without VAT - ohne MwSt). So you have to add your VAT, for Germany for example it's 19%, results in 23,11 EUR incl. VAT. On top of that you have the shipping fees and it's toll free within Europe (Information about the German Zoll). Can anyone help with the toll fees for Switzerland?
Third Party Accessories
Amazon.de (Germany)
Ok, above it's Amazon.de, the German website. But just search for Fairphone at your local Amazon website and you'll find something. Anyone with other websites where we can find Fairphone accessories?
Personally I own this car smartphone holder, which I really like, as shown below. I tried it with a Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, Nexus 5 and even a Note 2 fits. It should work for the Fairphone as well. Only charging could be a small problem, as you have to plug in the usb cable at the top of your device.
about the case
I bought the blue case, here is my opinion.
good :
-The case protect the phone
-In the case, the back of the phone is flat, therefore you can put it on a table, and touch the screen, it wont move.
bad :
- Using the volume button in the case is a pain in the ass. Basically every time i want to shift the volume, i remove the case.
- I don't know if that happen only with my phone of if it's a global issue, but when having a call with the phone in the case, the person i am talking to complains a lot about hearing it's own voice. This is a very big issue. The only work around for me now is to remove the case whenever i receive a phone call, or to use an hand-free kit.
-The phone doesn't really fit perfectly well in the case. There is no risk of the phone getting of the case, but there is always a corner that is not as deep in the case as the others.
-This is the first time i see the kind of plastic used for the case, (it's some kind of recycled plastic), it feels like plastic carton (ie : you keep having that feeling that it will stay folded if you fold it once).
-The sailing page states that "For your reference, the audio/headset jack port is sized at 6mm diameter.", i didn't encounter problems about it but others ave reported difficulty/impossibility to plug in their jack plug.
@benxda maybe you want to add this video of the case to your post ?

Thanks for your review. I added the video and linked to your review. The blue version is only available when buying as a bundle with the Fairphone? I did not see a blue one being available in the store.
About your review, hehe. The second good point is the reason I buyed a "case" for my Nexus 5. The device has a big camera module, popping out of the device... this should not happen at a Nexus. Ok. I bought a case, I would call it "case lite". The case cut outs are so nice for reaching all buttons, audio jack and USB micro socket. Yes, it's not suitable for the Fairphone of course, but maybe this is an idea for Fairphone's next case. Should we add this to the requests to Fairphone?
Two other benefits beside the plane backside and the best cut outs. The case is very grippy (like the Nexus 5 is by itself), slim and it looks beautiful. I don't use the screen protector which is delivered with the case. Also, you can get it for 10 Euro from Amazon (in this case German site).

In late 2013, the blue version was definitely available in the store, along with charger and sim adapter.
Probably only black case where left unsold when they started to link the accessory shop on the main page ?
(Actually i just checked here , it seems nothing at all is left to be sold (the page is displaying "No products found..." in my browser). Is it just a temporary bug ? or did they sold everything ? hmm)
If someone really want a blue case, maybe s/he could wait, they may make some again ? For exemple for FP2 's release (if FP2 is similar to FP1) ?
Anyway, you have 3d files so you can always build some with a 3d printer. (Not sure if it's that easy thought )

Vote: 8000mah Nexus 5 extended Battery. Will you buy?

I love travel, especially remote area. I want a great phone with long lasting battery. Nexus 5 is a great phone, but battery only last less one day under moderate use.
So I made a extended battery, the capacity is about 8000mah, 3.6 times of the stock battery:

I am waiting for the 3D printed back cover to finish this project. According to my test, under normal use, this phone can last 3-5 days with one full charge. The charge time is about 5-6 hours. My wife love it too, I am making another one for her. She asked me why don't mass produce it and sell?
The only thing about this extended battery is the complexity. Like other recent cell phones, Neuxs 5 put NFC, wireless charging coil, antennas and vibrator on the back cover. So to make this extended battery work on Nexus 5, beside the 8000mah battery. I also designed NFC Coil, Wireless Charging Coil, WiFi Antenna, GPS Antenna, and a vibrator. All these components adds up the cost. The retail price may reach $70-80.
I started this battery as a hobby. Is here anybody like my design, and think I should mass produce it? Will you upgrade your Nexus5's battery to 3.6 times for $70-80?
Yes!!!
At that price? Yes, really just depends on the bulk added
-guess
Looking good! 8000mAH is a lot of juice. How much bulk (in term of thickness and weight) is this going to add?
This is a great idea, but way too big. If you made one with a 2000mah battery I'd be all over it. Good luck!
I would take one for that price.

God damn!! I wouldn't mind using it, ingress destroys my battery.
Sheesh that's a lotta juice!
Looking forward to seeing that cover and how the phone looks after juicing
How about adding a MicroSD slot, I'd imagine you could graft it onto the usb port somehow... I never understood why nobody does that.

Technically, MicroSD slot is doable with the usb port, but we may need to cut off the data wires of the usb port. I haven't tried that yet. Don't know if the SD card and USB data can be connected at the same time to the PC / Mac.

Thanks Everybody for the supports. I am glad to see you guys are interested.
I worry most about this mod is the installation part, since Nexus 5 is not deisgned with a removable battery. Please let me know if the following installation is suitable for most of users:
1. We need to take your nexus 5 apart to take the original battery out.
2. Install the small battery of the extended battery and plug in the connectors.
3. Install the circuit board which connects the vibrator, antennas and coils.
4. Flip the large battery back to cover the small battery.
5. Connect the coils on the large battery to the circuit board.
6. Snap the extended battery cover on. (Coming Soon).
Please let me know how do you guys think about the installation part.

About the thickness: according to the 3D file, the thickness is about 17.5mm. I think it's okay.
The last phone with extended battery I used is HTC Sensation XE, with the extended battery is 18.5mm for only 3800mah
The thickness of galaxy s5 is even thicker: 21.4mm for 7500mah (With this thickness, we can make about 10000mah for nexus 5).
The thickness of s4 is 17mm for 6400mah
OMG like really this would be awesome could you post some pictures of your phone with the inserted?
And ps be sure to ship outside the US too
The worst of Nexus 5 is the battery...
This "mod" its awesome! I cant wait to see the Nexus 5 ensambled with the 8000mAh battery!!

I'll Buy
this is awesome. Though i would prefer something along the lines of a 3000mah battery, just so its that much thinner
This looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Just perfect
This would be soooooo good. The installation doesnt look hard and you are getting 8000 mAh. Ridiculously good.
Waiting to see that final image with the printed back cover.
I will buy it
This is very good work you've done. But it is a very niche product. Not many people are willing and able to disassemble their phone. Fewer of them own a Nexus 5. Fewer of those want a bigger battery and will ever learn about your product. And fewer still will swallow the price.
I encourage you to charge as much money as you need to, so you can make up for the low sales volume. Don't short-change yourself. This looks like a $100+ kit to me. Maybe you can hold a group buy, massdrop-style, where the price falls as more people commit to buy.
I'd definitely pay for it, well worth the money! but would want a bulky case to fit it lol.
Easily $100 or more wouldnt pay more than $150!
Like he said it's something only certain people would buy and be able to fit it properly, well I would!
I would love to have that battery power but i'm afraid that thing will ruin camera performance.
An extension battery pack can't add any thickness where the camera sits, otherwise it will impact on camera
If it's not bulky, I don't mind paying up to $100-$150. It would be nice if you can make the size smaller and fit it inside.
