[Q] Trick Google Play Store for installing more apps? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cannot find the original thread that explained how it was possible to trick the Google Play store into thinking my Kindle Fire device was some other tablet. I am rooted and have the Google Play Store on my device, but unfortunately I still have to do a lot of backing up apps and sideloading from my Razr M rendering the root and Play Store access on my Fire nearly useless. Just wanna be able to trick Google Play into thinking its some other device that will alow me to install more apps. I'm fairly noobish so i'll need somewhat detailed instructions.

It has to due with tweaking the build.prop.......I know twa_priv's cm10/sgt7 ROM thread has a link to a flashable modified build.prop that disguises it as a Galaxy Nexus.......wonder if it works with other ROMs?

Oh you know what, thats where I saw it. I haven't installed his ROM. I wonder if it's possible for use without the custom ROM.

I'm not that knowledgeable to answer that but here is another link that might help if you ever go to a cm7 or cm9 Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27784658

Need Amazon's Kindle Fire Edition of the Audible APK

I tried to upgrade my Audible app on my Kindle Fire (running 6.3) using the more recent APK from Google Market/Play and ended up completely breaking the Audible app.
I can't roll the upgrade back because the upgrade overwrote out the Amazon version of the APK.
Does anyone no where I can get these two APKs:
>> AudibleAndroidApplication-venezia.apk
>> AudibleForAndroid-otter-unsigned.apk
I've searched the web and called Amazon customer support and that hasn't helped.

If got it, please tell me, thank you!
Nope -- still trying to get these APKs. Do you have access to them?
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
I got the 'venezia' APK but installing it alone doesn't work. Guessing I need both. So still hoping someone will have the 'unsigned' APK.

extracted these from the 6.3 stock rom.
Edit: helps if I actually attach them.
THANK YOU!!!

ebook lending with ROM

apologies if this has been asked/answered before.
the wife has a kindle fire that i have put CM9 on. and for the most part she is fine with everything.
but she has amazon prime and i guess you can "check out" books for your kindle. but we are having a hard time figuring out how to make that work.
I was able to purchase FREE books and sync them with the kindle app.
but can't seem to get the lending thing down.
any help is appreciated.
thanks!
anybody? nobody reads books on their kindle? lol
Not sure what advice I can give you. I am using a CM10 ROM with a the generic Kindle app for android and I don't have a problem borrowing books. When I am browsing the Kindle book store the books that are available for borrowing (not very many actually) are marked with the "prime" tag just like they are when using a stock Kindle. You may need to be logged in to your prime account to see that but I am not sure since I'm always logged in.

Thanks for the reply - that gives me something to go on..
we would have expected to see what you are seeing, but whenever we press the kindle store icon, it just takes you out to an external web page and its difficult to navigate.
I'll try a clean wipe and install of cm10 tonight and see if that helps
Thanks!

Actually I am seeing the same thing you are getting (the web page). That is the way that the generic android Kindle app works. Unfortunately there is a huge difference between the Kindle app built into the stock Fire os and the android app (stock is much better). I have read several threads by people wanting to install the stock app on a custom ROM but I am not sure if anyone has been successful. You might want to try searching for that.

If you find a way to install the stock reading app post the link please. I want to do it too.

Make apps think I'm not using a kindle fire

I have a rooted kindle fire running cm10. Is there any way I can play fun run multiplayer race without it giving me a incompatibility message when I start the app?

This is the link to twa_priv's ROM CM10/SGT7 which contains a link below all the ROM releases that will modify your build.prop to disguise the Kindle as a Galaxy Nexus....it might help

There is also a certain build.prop that makes apps think you're on a certain LG phone, which is better for games because you get the right screen resolution

[Q] Q about apk files

I was under the impression that apps that run on android are APK files - typically found in the data/apps directory of rooted Kindle Fire. I bought a bunch of Dr. Seuss book/apps I wanted to transfer to my granddaughter's Nexus 7 from my Kindle Fire. They're all installed on the Fire but I can't find the APK files. What am I missing?

Are you serious? Your granddaughter? I was under the impression that there are hardly anyone here over 35 years old, and here we have an awesome granny?
** (No offence. I was seriously surprised)
Most books aren't .apk. If they are amazon books they will be some weird file type in sdcard/Books/ you could then get the kindle app on the nexus 7 and just transfer the files from /Books to the /Books on the nexus 7

@Tobias
I think they're talking about those books you buy as apps and they may read the story to you and have animations. Plus, there's a sale on Dr. Suess book apps for his birthday anniversary, so it's likely they're talking about those.

Yup mnt/asec - not so simple as a single apk I can send. Oh well. To make matters worse, her dad already bought most of the same ones on the sale. I'm going to let him log on to my account and download them for her. Hopefully they will work. I've been disgusted to discover that Calengoo doesn't work unless I'm logged on to Amazon. I've gotten rid of most of the kindle fire version of apps and often forget that's what my tablet is. Good thing I'm an old lady or I'd be madly in love with twa-priv!

See my note here:

I have tested kindle fire-specific apps on TWA's ROM, and as long as you are logged into the Amazon appstore, they should mostly work. As far as Calengoo, i there's a Google Play version, right? If you download that, you don't have to have the Amazon appstore

Not sure why but I have to be logged on to Amazon. Google Play lists Calengoo as installed but there is still a link to Amazon somewhere. I get occasional error messages and am required to log in to my Amazon account. Irritating.
Presumably it is because it is a paid app thru Amazon. I've not purchased it separately from Google. But why does an app that is specifically designed for syncing with my Google calendar need me to be logged on to Amazon??!! Geez!!

Edit: NO KISSES FOR YOU! I'm not giving credit card info to download a "free" file!

I have an account for that site, and use it all the time. All you should need to do is put in a 4 letter code to download. Are you sure you didn't follow an ad? I did not mean to lead you to a false lead. Sorry if it doesn't work out for you.
-- edit-- make sure you click the "free download" link in green under the description.

Same here. Need to login. Does bugmenot.com work here?
- Edit - http://bugmenot.com/view/hiapphere.com might help you.
In reference to the original question, an app that can make back-up apks will usually display every application installed on the device and allow you to make back-ups of those apks. I use "File Expert" but many more are available. That eliminates the need to manually search for the files It's easy to send the back-ups to any folder of your choosing.

[Q] Hangouts and FreeTime on the same OS?

Hello;
I have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" that I'm exploring custom roms with. My kid uses the Amazon FreeTime or Kid Mode subscription. I'm also wanting her to use Google's Hangouts app.
Are you able to access all the Amazon Features (such as Prime Movies, FreeTime and such) from a hybrid rom / are there any hybrid roms? I was able to root / install the play store / 2nd boot loader already. On the Amazon OS the Hangouts does not work with a microphone.
Thank you for any insight!
You lose most of the prime stuff tied into the Kindle when you root or run a custom room. People have found that using a browser like. Dolphin in desktop more allows them to do prime video. You will lose the free time feature of your kindle most likely by rooting

Thank you for the reply.
With the Root / Amazon OS all the prime things still work. Thank you for the info on the custom ROM not having prime access though.
I'll have to check out that Kindle 7 thread; there is a hybrid rom there that may work.

Wait, what? I have an HD 7 and I don't think such a rom exists. When you scoop out all the Amazon garbage out for flashing clean AOSP,prime goes into the trash as well.
