Help with possible corrupted recovery. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi guys,
I'm having some issues with my phone. I am using ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7 as my recovery. Here is what happened:
I was running the stable version of CM10 (10.0.0). I was having issues with random reboots and it was really laggy sometimes. To try and fix this, I wiped data, cache, davlik, and fixed permissions. After I did this, my phone was stuck in a bootloop. I couldn't get past the cyanogenmod loading screen. I booted into recovery, and restored my phone to a previous CM10 nightly that I had a backup of.
I then tried to flash CM10 again (10.0.0). I followed the steps here (note i did not use the dirty flash method):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1926754
Once I tried to boot, I was still stuck in a boot loop. So I recovered again to the CM 10 nightly. Now I was using the CM 10 nightly fine, and I was playing a game and the phone froze. I pulled the battery and when I rebooted, I could never get past the cyanogenmod loading screen. So I booted into recovery again. Before I restored again, I saw this error on the bottom:
E: error in /cache/recovery/last_log
I was still able to recover to the CM 10 nightly, and I have since rebooted my phone and it was fine (although it did take longer than normal to boot back up).
So I'm wondering if my recovery has become corrupted? I don't really know what I should do next. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Odin flash CWM, then flash TWRP, and ditch the scripts.

Thanks for the reply. Should I flash the same version of CWM that I'm using now (5.0.2.7)? Or does that not matter?
Also, should we always be using TWRP instead of CWM? I have never used that before.

If you can flash, then just flash the file I provided. TWRP is more stable and used friendly. Ptmr3 recommendeds it. Just flash, reboot recovery and your good!!

This would work too right? I don't really trust my CWM since it didn't work when I flashed CM10

Yes, but, you have to use the image file, and be sure to rename it to the proper name. The TWRP image thru the TWRP website. Just double check its for our phone!!

If you want to keep using cwm, then you have to use darksidecachewipe after flashing, right before you reboot from cwm. The darksidesuperwipe script is used to factory wipe.
So before you leave cwm recovery screen flash DScachewipe zip, and should boot fine.
Loop dog is right, go to twrp recovery. Nice UI and no need for wipe scripts.

Thanks for the help guys. Has anyone installed TWRP using Goo Manager? The whole idea of Goo Manager sounds awesome, but one bug on their end would be bad for us.

I've used GooManager to install TWRP on numerous occasions. It has always worked great for upgrading to the latest version, replacing CWM with TWRP, etc.

[Q] Help--May have bricked my phone

Checked other threads but didn't see anything like my problem
CWM recovery 6.0.14
Get msg saying can't open /cache /recovery /log. Won't perform any actions like restore or install zip.
Any ideas?
This will help. It will show you how to get your phone back to stock so you can leave it be or start over if you decide. Whatever you do, follow the directions to the T and you should be fine. Good Luck.

I have some problem with 6.0.1.4 too.. seems my phone is bricked. trying a restore and it is stuck at restoring cache. I was using 5.0.2.7 and installed a couple 4.0.4 roms with no issues. Was wanting to install CM10 and was told I should get 6.0.1.4 Everything is falling apart now.. Might be able to go back to 5.0.2.7 via odin?

I just went back to 5.0.2.7 via odin and on reboot my last ROM is booting up.. It's like nothing has changed.. All of this is a bit sketchy as there is really no good info on how to do thing. Like upgrading from 5.0.2.7 CWM to 6.0.1.4.. why doesn't the CWM website give basic info on steps to use.
I also put ROM manager on my phone to see if that would update to 6.0.1.4 and it just seemed to get stuck.. so removed it
I tried putting 6.0 on from ODIN and that seemed to leave NO CWM on my phone at all.
Then was scared so tried flashing SGH-T989_TMB_1_T989UVKL1_CL799405_REV00.rar to restore my phone to original, and that didn't work. just stuck at startup screen.
Then I restored CWM 5.0.2.7 via odin.. thankfully it worked
Then I found a zip file for 6.0.1.4 so put that on my micro sd via and adapter on my computer. The installed it via 5.0.2.7. Thought I was set with 6.0.1.4 on my phone.. but then it didn't seem to work at all. Luckily could put 5.0.2.7 back on via odin and now Executioner 777 4.0.4 comes right up.
No idea what to do next.. or maybe do nothing as it is very hard to really know what is the best way. :s
6.0.1.4 has issues with our phone. 5.0.2.7 is fine with darkside scripts, twrp is good because you don't need the scripts.

I tried to download from the twrp website without success. Any idea where else I couldget it?
BTW, when I followed the instructions linked to in the second post, Odin sat there "initializing" for over 20 minutes before I aborted the process. I was able to flash cwm recovery without problems.
I'm stuck in a boot loop and need to do something. Tried flashing the stock ROM mentioned above without success via Odin.
You don't have to use twrp. Use CWM to get you out of your loop

When I try to run CWM recovery the menu comes up then it immediately goes to a dark screen with just the tophat and yellow circle and "ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.1.3" in white at the bottom of the screen.

OK. I'm going to re-load the drivers on the PC and reboot. Then start Odin. Seeing as CWM isn't currently working, I'll load it thru Odin. Now Reboot the phone and see if CWM works. If yes, install the ROM from there. If not, can I install the ROM from Odin?

[q] cmw & twrp

Anyone having issues with either of these, I just had to warrenty my wifes phone, so when I got it back I rooted it no problem then of course first thing I want to do is a nandroid backup, so I flashed the newest cmw 6.0.1.5 it hangs on wipe cache, tried to reinsatll cmw a few times same thing. so then I installed twrp newest version, it installed and when I go into recovery(the screen with the twrp logo and gray background) I get the home screen with no options, again tried several times to install same issue, lastly I tried the touch version of CMW keep getting errors, cannot open cache etc. Any Ideas??? I really need to clear the cache between different roms, shouldnt have to use super wipe, besides have no clue where to find that anymore. Im personally on a sgs3 and all works well. I'm very familiar with bot of these as I flash non stop on my sgs3 but Huston we have a issue here! UGH
Thanks Rob
I would recommend that you odin clockworkmod tar so you can flash superuser zip from it. Once you have root/superuser, download goomanager via playstore. Run install script andbit will download then flash the latest TWRP by itself.
TWRP is the best recovery i have used.

Same issue here on the Telus T989D. Any solutions without using cwm?
You can always try the manual method if your brave and familiar with the terminal. Go to Team Win's for our phone here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/101. Download the .IMG file and follow the instructions under Download - Recovery Image Method (using dd): Not hard but doublecheck your typing before hitting enter or you'll brick your phone.
I'm not responsible for any actions taken because of this post. Good Luck, its worth it in the long run.

One small problem with that.....
Hi guys. I'm having a somewhat similar issue, but it's a little more problematic than that. I was in mid-flash when I unfortunately learned that any attempt to work with the cache resulted in an immediate freeze-up. From what little of the log I've seen, it's trying to tell me that the cache partition is read-only. Any attempt to unmount, wipe, or work with the cache in any way will result in an immediate lock up. This is *after* wiping the system and data partitions. I have been able to get TWRP to start correctly twice in the last 40 times I've tried to boot up the phone.
Question: I noticed that TWRP has a button where you can enter a terminal command. I don't have adb set up yet on this machine, since reloading it. I would imagine the answer would be 'no', but is it possible to put a different recovery image on the sd card, then use TWRP's terminal button to issue the command to flash it, or would that make matters worse? Or am I going to have to set up adb and odin again on another machine and use that? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Side note: I should've stayed with CWM non-touch. :crying:
This worked for me:
reflash CWM, flash superwipe, install TWRP through goomanager.
i had the same problem on my t989 and this odin flashed version posted here worked fine

EDIT: Wow I guess I didnt read the critical part where your stuck on the recovery boot screen so the attachment below wont help.... JUMP DOWN TO POST #21 AND FOLLOW IT TO RECTIFY THE GETTING STUCK ISSUE
Here, try this file guys. Someone over in the Jedi threads made a CWM flashable TWRP zip. You can thank me for bringing it to your attention if you want, but I did not create this ( I just clicked on the attachment paperclip for the thread and browsed through all the attachments because I knew I saw it somewhere in the development section...)
I also checked TWRP's own website and for the Hercules, v.2.3.1.1 is the latest version supported for our device so far but I only found 2.3.0.0 packed in a recovery flashable form.
Just flash it via CWM like any other zip and once its done it'll reboot your device automatically to system, so just reboot it back to recovery to make sure it worked. It did for me when I did awhile back with v.2.2.2.0 and I just used the below file to flash and update it in TWRP to v.2.3.0.0
Hope it helps

If you have either I guess it doesn't really matter. Just install/flash the attached file below just like you would any other rom via your recovery.
After it installs reboot back into recovery and you will see the old recovery replaced with the latest TWRP for the T989.
Lemme know if this works for ya.

[Q] I can't Factory Reset

I was getting bored of my old rom, so i decided to install another one via CWM. When i went into recovery mode, i chose to do a factory reset. When the operation starts, my phone freezes at "Formatting /data..." and i need to take out the battery and try again. Is this common? Is there even a fix to this? For the rom I am trying to use, Android 4.2.2 Liquid Smooth, I need to reset in order to get past the boot logo.
I would try TWRP instead of that CWM. CWM only gives me as well as others issues; however, some people have no trouble at all with it.

[Q] Softbrick/bootloop

So, I decided to root my wifes Galaxy S2 due to it being a little older and to get more out of it for her, however I seem to have got my self stuck in a bootloop.
-Downloaded Odin, flashed CWM recovery and rooted phone all relatively easy and with no issues. However I wanted to get CM 10.1.2 stable cuase thats what i run on my Nexus 4. Before i flashed, i ran a Nandroid backup from cwm and did a wipe data/factory reset and rebooted. this is where i got the boot loop, on the T-mobile screen. Tried restoring from the back up, and still boot looped. tried flashing CM and it boot looped on the CM splash screen. On the CM forum it seems someone else had this issue and that kinda how i got pointed here. CM Admin suggested downloading an updated Bootloader. I honestly looked all over this site and couldnt find ANYTHING. I can still get into Download mode, and Recovery mode with no issues.
Thanks for your time
