Hey guys have a question for you. So wifi tether and sprint hotspot give wifi access to other phones, but it doesn't give access to the phone that is running the hotspot. Is there a way where the phone that is running the hotspot can also access the hotspot? This is really frustrating to me. Thanks in advance!

no... and why? kind of redundant isn't it..??
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
My guess is access to the network for LAN sharing among all the devices connected. Although that is rather redundant since you don't need internet to do than just set up a Bluetooth PAN or a VPN and then file share amongst the connected devices. Other than that I can't think of a single reason to try and connect your phone to its own hotspot since it already had an internet connection otherwise it wouldn't be broadcasting a hotspot

Ive found that while I am tethered, I am unable to use the internet. I was tethering my Ipad, then needed to do something on my phone and found it wouldnt refresh email nor open websites until I ended the tether connection. I think this is what the OP is referring to.

The engineering major in me chuckled a bit...to do that you'd need another receiver inside the phone.
That is exactly what I'm referring to

Why though if it's uploading downloading through sprint, casting through wifi with the receiver unused? It's like opengarden.com

Well I've never had the issue that's he's referring to, but It sounds like he wants to receive from something else..I went a step too far.
What he wants to be able to do is use the phone while it's broadcasting wifi.

Was looking to join Sprint and get a ET4G but wanted to know if the root tether method still worked and is unlimited since Sprint has put a cap on it?

The cap affects hot spots.
It doesn't it doesn't have anything to do with rooted tethering as that just shares the internet on the phone, which is unlimited.
Would wireless tethering be the same as a hotspot?
I get what he is saying. Android has tethering built in at a OS level. Its always there but Sprint blocks it and adds their own stuff which is monitored. Since root tether makes use of the phones data Sprint can't limit Hotspot since you aren't using it.
It works just fine.
Hey is it ad hoc still or infrastructure on wifi tether

I was wondering, is there a way that I can use free Wifi tethering with my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus?
I have just recently rooted my phone.
Of course! Use Wifi Teather for Root users. You can find it in the Play Store. I use it every day.

Is there a way to make it private so no one randomly connects to it?

They all offer WPA/WPA2 security.
Yeah the settings are great. You can choose the name of the connection, security and even enable per device access. Have fun!

I'm happy I came across this thread, Wi-Fi tether came on the ROM I used on my Revolution, and in a moment of dumb, I never thought to look for it in the market.
I just rooted my Nexus tonight, and I just downloaded this.
Good memories, it's a great app.
I just used wifi tether for the first time yesterday and was honestly surprised at how well it works. Does it have any effect on my data plan?
Some of the custom roms removed the carrier restrictions on the built in wifi tether. Check your rom's forum too.
I tried EasyTether Pro and my computer doesn't seem to recognize the internet. It used to work with my EVO 3D, but since i got GNII, i've gotten nuttin.

Search for what app. None are working for me. So i don't know if a step has changed, or there are different apps that work perfectly. Searching blindly is only a waste of time.
Pdanet works for sure

EasyTether definitely works. You need to have your phone in USB debugging mode. ET uses ADB for Internet connection.
Note that the free version blocks https, so sites like Facebook won't load. Xda works though.

So even if I don't have tethering with ATT, can I tether via USB?

I don't know AT&T specifically, but that's what we're talking about on Sprint here. Tethering without paying the additional monthly fee.
It's technically a violation of your contract, but they've never bothered me over the past few years. I don't abuse it, just occasionally use it when I need internet access for my laptop in a pinch.
+1 with easytether pro. It works for me with my mac osx mountain lion and non rooted note 2.
Pdanet's been working for me.
I have an unlocked galaxy nexus running Franco r364. I just bought a Samsung arm chrome book and it will see the nexus Wi-Fi hotspot but will not connect. It let me tether however for a while then blocked it. I have the unlimited data no tethering plan. Does anyone know how to bypass the tethering block or know how I can get the chromebook to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot. I've researched and found tether bypasses such as clock work tether that work for PC or Mac but not chrome OS anyone experiencing the same issue or have found a solution. Thanks in advance.

Use the stock teethering feature in android.
T-mobile doesn't have software blocking your device because it's not T-mobile firmware but rather stock google.
you need to enable teethering on your device.
verify that your APN TYPE in your APN settings says "default, supl, dun, mms"
that should enable teethering on your stock device.

Wait... Huh? I can bypass T-Mobile's block? Can you elaborate on this more clearly? I had to orkbot (or something like that) and PDAnet just to barely tether. It's slow as hell (1 gbs). Please help!

I think he's trying to say that you should use the stock wireless tethering hotspot function instead of a third party app. Also to modify the APN with the parameters he provided
Just for the record 1gb(p)s is not slow at all...roughly 800mbps

I added the "dun," in and my computer is telling that it cannot connect to the network. Am I don't something wrong? That's with the Wi-Fi tether. I can connect with the USB tether, but I can't access the internet. I get a message from T-Mobile saying, "Turn your Smartphone into a Mobile Hotspot! Share your smartphone's high-speed internet connection […]." I can't move beyond this webpage, either. Ugh. This sucks. :-/

Using stock adjusted APN and it connects but when u try to browse it directs u to T-Mobile. Anyway around this?

The way they catch you is by the UAString. On their side, it makes it look like a desktop is using your data and hence the reason you get blocked. Not too familiar with Chrome OS, but see if there are any add ons for chrome that will change the UA String( User Agent String)

Yeah, they're not having that this year. Lol. Which plan are you using? The $70 unlimited plan?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk II
I got a family plan with unlimited calls and text. I had 5gb data with hot spot but they recently came out with the uncapped unlimited data and igot it because I knew I was rooted and could still tether. Guess they caught on because as of Feb 1st it keeps redirecting to T-Mobile. I can still get away with it on my ps3 though that's about it.

I too have the $30 unlimited plan and I can tether just fine. You are using the stock tethering feature right? Have you tried changing the uastring?

Forums typically require a minimum number of characters (chars) before you can post. 10 characters used to be pretty common, so people would boost their character count by adding "10char" to their post. Looks like 2 characters is the minimum on xda...
I have this problem too, almost. I have the Sprint variant and I don't get redirected to a site on my Samsung ARM CB.
When on any Jellybean rom, my CB sees the built in hotspot from the gnex but says it can't connect to it. Works perfectly on cm9.1, although only when the hotspot is an open network. I honestly can't believe 2 Google devices won't work together.

Switching to an Android use agent works
Since I bought a Samsung Chromebook in July, I had no trouble using my T-Mobile $30 5GB plan to tether to it . . . until today.
I was unhappy until I switched user agents to an Android user agent. A couple (Android 4.0.2 for Galaxy Nexus & Chrome for Android Tablet) different user agents did the trick.
Does anyone who has the phone confirmed if you can tether the internet to the iPad, and will att detect it?

My first Android phone is the Samsung Infuse 4g, I dumped it after a month for the reason that when I rooted it and tether on my iPad, att detected and sent me a message that I am tethering.
Now I wanted an Android because of the so boring iPhones, owning for so long, and it looks like a free toy on a box of serial now with those large android phones.
