What determines theme compatibility - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Beyond ROM specific themes (stock, CMx, AOSP, etc.) what problems are most likely from flashing a theme that is not specific for S3 -- that is, I can't tell if it's specific for S3. Other than screen resolution issues I'm guessing maybe missing icons?
The only threads on theme compatibility I could find mentioned having a backup, just in case theme didn't work (would ZipThemer backup be sufficient?) and possible endless reboot (and how would I get out of that?). Only making sure ROM and theme matched seemed important.

I wouldn't put my money on a zip themer backup. Always do a full nandroid when flashing something potentially dangerous to your setup.

Lets say the rom isnt tw or device specific but urs is. Pngs could be named differently xml layouts for other devices may be different apk packages system blocks and a lot of other things could go wrong breaking apps wiping partitions thay shouldnt be wiped and else where. Unless u know what ur doing dont ness with it.

So, if I understand your reply, even if I stay with stock ROM and new theme is for stock ROM, it also has to be specifically for S3.
I have looked at enough threads to conclude I'd have fewer or no compatibility issues if I flashed CM or AOSP/AOKP ROMs, but which one? CM9 looks like the most stable for S3 and has tons of themes. Yes...no? Would CM9 themes work on CM10?

Is it possible to theme the virtuous ROM without the need of a launcher??
It depends on what you want to do. Android is quite flexible, you can change the launcher like you said. On cyanogens rom he has a very new theme engine which allows you to change the look of the phone, but it is very new. Or the traditional way of flashing framework.zip among others to change the main pngs on the phone. Check out the theme section here, and for any other HDPI Device.
How can I flash the framework?
Just like a normal zip, make sure it is for the type of rom. A cm theme wont work on sense for example, also make sure the screen size is the same
could i extract whats my phone currently is and then edit it myself?

[Q] UOT Kitchen - System.apk/Framework.apk

So, I forgot to backup my system & framework apk's before I uploaded them into the kitchen and made a new theme. *I know, shame on me*.
Is there a default/stock for those or are they created based of individual phone information?
What i'm asking is, do I need to re-install the rom to get those back or can I just pull them from above said stock apk's?
Android: 2.3.5
Rom:Cm7(08012011)
Any help would be greatly apprecaited!!!
Thanks-

i'm confused. are you saying you dont like your theme and want to go back to stock or you want you want to update to the next nightly but dont want to do the kitchen every time?
I'm not reaaal familiar with the kitchen stuff, I know more than enough to get myself in trouble (changing radio's, roms, etc) but haven't completely grasped the themes yet.
It SEEMS like a couple of things are not changing even if I create a completely new theme (The battery icon, the lockscreen buttons and something else I forget)
My thinking is, there's a generic theme(s) for the rom and when you create a get a new one, it updates certain aspects of it.
If I create a new theme in kitchen and only change the battery, wouldn't all of the other settings revert to the "default" theme?
On a completely different note-
What's the difference between ADW themes and Themechoose themes?

Ah. ok. so what ever you change in the kitchen it will change in the apk. it wont touch the rest of the apk. its kinda like an online apktool. it unpackages it changes the png's you want and then packages it up again using the resources from the apk you submitted. ADW themes are for the ADW launcher so it only themes the home screens. but Themechooser themes the whole phone, or as much as the developer of themechooser allowed it to do.
Great! Thanks

Mods

Can someone explain mods and how they work? Can you install them on any version of android? Or rom?

This is NOT a definitive answer since I'm not a developer, but this is what I've gathered.
The mods I've seen recently (tethering, no increasing ring, no persistent wifi notification) all involve making changes either to a system application (e.g., SecPhone_ATT.apk) or the framework itself (/system/framework/framework-res.apk). Usually the application or framework is decompiled, modified, then recompiled and installed. This post about the no increasing ring mod is informative because it explains how to do the mod yourself.
Because the mod is a modification of a system application or the framework, it generally has to be made to the specific ROM you are running. This is especially true for framework mods, but it's a good rule of thumb.
Before installing a mod, find out which ROM it is made from. If you're running a different stock ROM, then don't apply it. (Or make a nandroid and give it a shot, but be prepared for problems.) If you're running a custom ROM, politely ask the developer to apply the mod to the ROM for you.
Or, download apktool and try your hand at making the modifications yourself. It's really not all that hard.

List Of Working Themes for I9305

Just thought i'd make a list of themes that were working on our i9305's maybe this could be updated/stickied.
Working/Tested - Stock ROM
None as of yet
Working/Tested - Modified ROM
MotoMoto Blue Theme
Not Working
???
I will update this as i test themes, and other users do the same as of writing this i have only tired MotoMoto theme.
Yes I was just going to let you know that MotoMoto works, Just to be safe I just Removed the FmRadio stuff out of it ZIP just incase it messes something up, but i dont think it would, if it doesnt find the file i think it skips updating the apk, so should be ok
But yeh I Flashed perfectly. No problems at all I actually like this theme
Before you flash it would be better to make sure you look at the updater_script to check mount points and also what script/setup is being used

Could we not make a unified install script based on this one, to work with other themes that "may not" work?
I think it depends how the themer has setup up his mod, if its the same kind of setup type it should be very easy, Well how about who ever is wondering about a theme mod just put requests in this thread and one of us should hopefully be able to look into it for you or who ever
Doesn't belong in dev. Moved to themes.
Can someone please test and confirm if these theme work on XXALI9

[Q] Calling the Theming experts - Help us, SOS!

This is a cry for help, from me and the other NOOBs out here, new to the theming world with no idea where to begin.
I started out with a problem. I hate the UI on my Note Edge Lollipop, as compared to the stock Lollipop ASOP UI. I started about trying to change the entire UI (icons, menus, fonts, notification drawer, app drawer etc) to stock AOSP Lollipop UI. I am not rooted.
I AM LOST. No idea which guide to follow. Don't want to change my launcher. I would prefer not to root, would prefer not to void my warranty, would just prefer to screw around as less as possible while getting as close to stock Lollipop as possible.
And I know there are others around me. So here I am, on behalf of the noobs, requesting all experts to provide a starting point from where to begin changing the UI - completely, with as little messing around as possible. Not just to AOSP but to any other UI that someone else might prefer. Please explain this to us like we are 3 year olds.
1) Options for those who are Not Rooted.
2) Options for those who are Rooted.
Ps. This will not work if only the experts contribute. Everyone here who has something to contribute please do!
Ps. Mods I looked and searched for days. I know there are guides out there but I wanted something Note Edge and Lollipop specific.
As my contribution. I love the work that this Dev has done for the Note 4. But don't know if this will work on our devices. Also Im not rooted yet.

The new TouchWiz on the S6 has themes. Pray that they port it over to us and any other features it has like they used to do before with those Experience updates during the S3 and Note 2 periods...
Mate, there isn't actually a lot you can do for theming without rooting your device. Most themes replace icons in the system files which is impossible to access without root or without being officially supported by Samsung...
The only real way to theme your un-rooted Note Edge is to change the launcher and theme that...
My wishes seem to have been answered within a week. The new Samsung themes app is all we need. Let's hope we get it fast.

Lollipop Touchwiz Theme
Here is themes app for Lollipop touchwiz http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/themes-apps/touchwiz-theme-lollipop-note-4-t3037891. I tryed and it worked. Just don`t flash the zip (that makes your touchwiz home to FC). Just extract the zip and copy all content of zip`s system folder in your devices system folder as it is in zip, except Toucwiz home. Reboot and all done. Now you can change touchwiz themes as you like

So, does your edge notifications still work?
I tried to get a few things changed but after messing with my system folders I lost all edge notifications...
I also opened the system file, did you realise you're installing Apex launcher onto your Note Edge? I already own the pro version of this. In the System>App folder it actually says Apex Pro meaning this could be considered as Warez, if it actually is the pro version...

The contacts, mms, and settings zips all work on N915G NK4 KITKAT. Framework zip makes xpossd and some modules FC.
