Hello
I have a Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M it is rooted, unlocked, and my current provider is fido. I was searching the forums and internet and i couldnt find a single thread on how to add a language onto the phone. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. ( Also the language i want to add is "Slovak" aka "Slovenčina "
Thanks in advance.
Actually adding languages is a painful task.
First you must deodex your ROM
Then Decompile every single app
Then get the language resources to fit with each specific app --> That goes into a lot more detail...
And then recompile that 1 app, and now onto the rest 20+ apps or so...
You might as well make a custom ROM while your at it. Lol
But it's better to flash a custom ROM. They usually have all the languages you need (especially CM7)

Thank you for the quick reply, and I am not experienced enough to even begin with such a large task. I guess i shall have to deal with the language i have. Thanks again though much appreciated.

Hi Guys,
Is there any chance to get Hebrew Fonts support on the deisre. I dont want the whole OS to be in Hebrew. Accessing Hebrew Websites, and reading heabrew mails/sms would be just perfect and more the anough.
Is it possible?
thx
Please keep me informed in case of success - I have the same interest
I promise the same in my turn
I only got Hebrew on my G1 by rooting it. Then you could upload modified fonts with the Hebrew characters included.
I guess it's the same here, get root and then upload fonts. Hopefully, rooting is on the way!
I don't know any other way of adding the Hebrew fonts.
I apologize......meant for general.
Moved to proper forum and re-opended for discussion.
In case you haven't heard, you can now root the Desire and apply Hebrew fonts:
tinyurl . com / desireroot
I've rooted but haven't tried the fonts yet.
Thanks Mikey for moving the thread back in right place.
Regarding the fonts.
I have also rooted my device and flashed an update with hebrew fonts. Works like a charm now, finally!
If someone needs further info, just let me know.

Hi
I have the r1-hebrew-desire-signed zip file, can you write what should be done to apply the fonts, after the root is done.
excellent news
I should get my Desire on the 12/5.
Will play with it for a while then root and apply the Hebrew fonts.
But, I have a question. Why on earth do we have to root the phone for that?
Why there isn't any official languages support?
If its done in order to reduce the ROM size they can give it in additional package
It looks like HTC/Google are loosing market here (although we fans will continue to buy them)
I heard that Android 2.2 will have this support but as I know HTC, we will get update after a long while (Hero gets its update only now after 1/2 a year or mor...)
Although im sure we will find a lots of modified ROMS here and on MODACO that will let us do what ever you want.

Hi,
where do you get the Hebrew fonts? can you post a link?
Thanks
Hebrew on Desire without root: Install the "Il News Droid" app from the market. As a side effect you get Hebrew fonts installed.
I'm almost certain I was able to view a site in Hebrew the other day on my Desire. Using just your standard desire with official 2.2 update.

Hi everyone. I'm a long time observer on xda (from win mo) but am very new to android. While I'm familiar with my device and the basics, I'm very unfamiliar with android terminology. For example, I'm eager to try some of the themes I see here but don't know which files to download as they are all labeled for cm6 only, etc. and then I see they need to be "flashed".
Can someone explain the language of the elites pertaining to android please? I'm assuming they are all codes for different roms, etc.
Fyi, I have an evo running froyo, not root or anything. Everything up to date as supplied from htc/sprint
Thanks in advance
cm6 is for this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735596
the "zip" files will work with most any ROM as long as you stay with in the OS version. Much like WM 6.1 themes would not work in 6.5. SO Android 2.1 themes will not work Android 2.2 (aka FroYo). Of course some things like Kernels are designed for certain ROMs. Like a kernel for Freshs ROM vs. a general population.

you need to be rooted to apply themes and ROMs. Currently though, there is no way to root if you already have Froyo.
Flashing a new ROM, theme, or anything with the same regards simply means to wipe away what exists and replace it with something new.
So when you are flashing a new ROM, you are taking away the old one (with a data wipe aka factory reset) and then installing the saved zip file (contains the ROM) onto the computer.
Unfortunitly themes can't just be installed like they could on WM they need to be "flashed". These means you need to enter the phones bootloader. If you don't know what all that means then you have some more reading before you can get into themes. Much of which was said in the post above this.
Thanks everyone. And thanks for not flaming me, lol
Hi all, new to the board and hoping to get at least some enlightening answers to my troubled mind. As a computer tech I see these new generation of smart mobiles as a small computer with an operating system where the user can upgrade, install and customize as he wants.
That's where my troubles begin I just bought a Gio s5660 for my daughter the phone came with Froyo android 2.2.1 installed. When I came to this country I didn't know there were so many restrictions imposed by the carries regarding upgrading it, in short to pay for a service that I can do it myself.
My question is if I do upgrade my phone lets say with a rom from France region will it work anywhere in the world independent of carrier?? is the language of a region the reason we have to update according to the carriers?.
Appreciate any enlightening,
TIA,
JLart
at first, welcome to XDA.
there are specific versions of the galaxy gio, and not only the GT-s5660.
most have a letter behind it, like the GT-s5660m, GT-s5660L. and there's the V model too, and a korean model is SHW-....
where are you from/where did you bought the gio?
this is so I can know wich type you have, as some types have different hardware, and can't just flash firmware, as they need specific firmware for their device, or you can't make calls, or wifi doesn't work...
firmwares get rolled out per provider, and sometimes they have 1 or 2 preinstalled aplications, but these can be removed easily, if you have root acces, but thats a different story.

-->> The one I am holding is GT-s5660 apparently from Italy since one of the labels on the box and the user guide is in Italian.

Hello IM also a new user and looking for a confirmation on this. Is it safe to assume that, since the phone is unlocked does it matter what region I am in??? Installing any ROM would be ok then??
10x for the reply
Hi, would like to say ty again to voetbalremco for his much precise instructions.
went to the site he said, downloaded an German open version of android 2.3.6 installed and everything works perfect with any carrier.
To answer meudroids question you correct, the phone open so you can upgrade on a GSM phone so that uses a SIM card. At least thats how I understood it better experts on the forum will be able to help u on that.

Hi, I have a newbie question about android
Recently I've bought a new galaxy w. I've turned it on and figured out that it has a support of English and Malaysian language.
I'm a russian native speaker, so I would like to change a ui to russian language.
I mean not just being able to type sms in russian, but the whole ui (like application names, menues, and so on).
So, I would like to know how conceptually it can be done?
Is it just a matter of changing some locale related files or I need to install something?
Thanks a lot in advance

Hi, Thanks a lot for the answer and sorry for the late reply
I've installed this application, but it seems like it provides only partial solution.
I saw that some applications really were named in russian (like google maps and google play)
But it did nothing with menus and icons on the bottom of the screen (phone, contacts, and so on).
When I chose Settings -> Language I don't see russian language and I guess this is the problem. I understand that more locale application only changes the locale and its good enough for applications having internationalization support by themselves but it doesn't affect the whole UI language of the system.
The issue looks deeper than only installing the right locale.
Meanwhile I've read about different ROMs available. I'm still vague on details but can ROM installation resolve the problem? If so, what ROM should I install?
Some more details that can shed some light:
- I'm located in Israel and the phone is bought there
- Kernel version : 2.6.35.7-perf-I8150DXMLM3-CL1103265
[email protected] #3
-Baseband version
I8150DXLC1
- Android version 2.3.6
-PDA I8150 DXLM3 (to obtain this I used *#*#1234#*#*)
Disclaimer, I'm quite a technical guy (programmer with ~15 years experience) so stuff like rooting the phone and installing custom modes of os version doesn't scare me, I just only never dealt with android phones
Thanks a lot in advance
Hi,
After reading and learning a little bit, I've tried to root the device, but with no luck
I tried all 3 methods I've found
here
but no one didn't really work
I'm quite sure I did everything like it was explained.
In the first method it wrote me the the update.zip was installed successfully, but after the reboot the phone wasn't rooted.
I've paid attention that in logs (accessible through recovery console there are a lot of messages of type:
failed to open /sys/class/android_usb/android0/state - looks like its an invalid path.
So any help will be appreciated here
Thanks
OK. It looks like after a couple of hours I've got a root access to the phone.
Thought someone can be interested...
I've used the first method and it didn't work.
I've made factory reset (also available in recovery console) and then came across mounting option in menu.
So I've mounted everything I could there and then re-applied the update.zip. Rebooted the phone and now it seems to have a root access (I have a superuser application).
Now the next challenge will be installing the ROM with russian language native support (in android jargon "flashing" ) with Odin.
I've downloaded a firmware from sammobile.com. And planning to use this tutorial
And I believe I'll be happy with my russian language
Since my experience with this stuff now is impressive _one_ day, so
could someone point me whether i'm in the right direction at all?
Thanks
Install the latest firmware XXLM8, i think it support russian language via the tutorial how to install via odin, then u will need to use the first method to root the firmware again...thats all

I didn't find XXLM8 firmware on sammobile, instead I used XXLM6 which is also good enough for my needs.

Hi everybody,
I need ROM original (no unlock no custom) in spanish I have a second hand Samsung SIII SGH-I747M, but this phone has only English, French and Chinese language, and I dont want a custom rom please.
Somebody can help me?
The android version is 4.1.2
Build Number: JZO54K.I747MVLDMF1
Sorry for my English my language is Spanish
Thanks.
Edit:
I found Language Enabler a nice apk but it works in 85% the translation but I think is enough and I want one more thing if it possible change the rom? some forums I've found there is not possible to do, and I want to be sure to do with this phone.
¡Holà!
The SGH-i747M is mainly sold in Canada, so the carrier probably don't bother to include the complete Spanish language translation files, if not at all.
Although on Sammobile, I can see official ROMs are available for a Mexican and a Puerto Rican carriers; they probably are fully Spanish-translated. Now, I do NOT suggest you flash those official ROMs on your phone -- yours looks like is a Canadian one, based on the last part of the build number --, you might brick it. But you might be able to extract some things from them, and create your own FrankenROM...

Is it possible to change your ROM? yes, of course. Lots of people are doing it in these forums. Please do some readings, and familiarize yourself with the concepts of a ROM, a recovery, and flashing. Look at the various stickied posts in the SGSIII forums -- The Noob Helper is a great start, but every user will suggest you read, read, and read again until you feel confident enough.
After you read, read, and read again, if you are still tempted to try going the flashaholic way, it looks like AOSP-based ROMs/CM-based ROMs can be set in Spanish, and the translation is probably more complete than on stock ROM.
Thanks Alexander,
Acctually I was reading, reading and reading a lot of posts about flashing, and its very confusing because for one phone many people uses diferents ways, and some people has unsucessfull work... and thats what im worried.
And I think after Installing Language Enabler and put it on Spanish (United States) the phone autmatically restore and I have changed to spanish and works really good, almost 80% or 85% was spanish, I think could usefull for other poeple who wants to change to other languages, because the first time I did, I was trying with Spanish (Ecuador) but it doesnt works hahaha and the phone was "spanglish" words with the half english half spanish worked really bad.
