some questions - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody,
I'm Tim from the Netherlands and new here. Well not that new been reading here for some time now but not needed to post questions / make a account until today
I have a HTC Desire second hand for one week now and installed some roms to see what works best etc
I have right now [ROM][PRE-ALPHA] Jelly Bean - Pre-Alpha 1 [18.10.12] from LaidbackNikez
Its for my HTC the fastest rom i have seen and works really good for 1 week now.
O btw i'm a noob in this so spare me a bit. I Know how iritating people can be and maybe you think that of me also but i really looked for answers but dint found them sorry.
My questions:
The rom i have now, is there a way to update bug fixes (nightly builds? ) If i look @ evervolv site i dont see HTC Desire nightly.
IF there are updates for example the Camera bug can you install these without losing everything on the Phone?
Or do you lose everything on nightly builds..?
I just dont know yet how it all works, i know that android uses Linux based, but example cynanogen? / Evervolv? are these complete new firmwares? or software you can bind in jellybean for example? (sort of kernel updates) ?
The rom i use now dont have gps but it should work (do i need to update the radio? is that even possible?)
And the Camera issues should be great if it works. For the rest i dont see any bug for now.
I'm not a type of person that installs every week a new rom.. if i have 4.04 / 4.11/ 4.1 then i'm happy because i really like the way it looks and moves thru my second hand desire .
my info form HTC Desire:

And again sorry if theres a site i can maybe find all my information if someone link it i would for sure read it.
Greetings,
Tim

With nightlies is prob best to do a full wipe. Lots of people here use titanium backup so they don't have to deal with the hassle of reloading everything.

thx ! will look at it.
If its to much shizzle I think I stick to this rom until there's one stable, for now I have only camera issue and gps doesn't seem to find that quick sats, he find some but maybe it works better out house. but for the rest GSM works like candy really love it! that's the reason why I dint buy me a new one for 600 euros but a second hand for 80 euro

[Q] Cyanogenmod - What are nightlies?

I have done some digging, and am having trouble getting the answer. What are Cyanogen's Nightly builds? Everyone keeps mentioning these, but I would like some clarification before I move from Fresh EVO to Cyanogenmod 6.1.
...come to think of it, I may not be entirely clear on what builds are lol.
Thanks!
PS - I'm rooted with s-off via toastcfh's old directions, hboot 0.76.2000
Nightlies are builds with small bug fixes... think of it as someone finding small errors on the code for a day and then recompiling the ROM with those errors fixed.
A build is a version of software..in this case Cyanogen which has a nightly version or build of all compiled fixes etc for the 24hr period. Thus nightly build or version of all fixes for previous day or since last nightly build.
Thanks, appreciate the quick response.
Follow up Q: after I flash Cyanogenmod 6.1 is there an easy way to get these frequent updates installed?

Not really. They aren't really released as flashable patches. Instead, each night the rom is automatically compiled with the current sources. Some people get good luck with flashing these roms on top of their previous CM rom. They won't wipe their data in order to hold onto their installed programs. This could cause instability.
The other option for updating is to wipe everything and reinstall a fresh nightly. I'll do that maybe once a month if there are any good updates. Right now I'm running build 191 and things are running so smoothly that I doubt I'll want to change unless there's a new feature or critical bugfix.

Cyanogenmod Nightlies are available if you have Rom Manager Premium but you still must install them from there. Not a bad way to do it.
Very good. Now last question:
If I download the Latest Version from the link at the top of http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com does that automatically include the latest build (199)?
go here for nightlys http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?type=nightly&device=supersonic
and dont forget to flash gapps after the rom
Easiest way to get nightlies:
http://goo-inside.me/cm6/supersonic/nightly/ <--Scroll down to the last entry. This is my mirror which automatically pulls the newest nightly as soon as it's compiled.
Official mirror: http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic&type=nightly
Check what's been changed: https://twitter.com/cmsrc
To flash a Nightly, just put it on the root of you SD card and flash it from recovery. You *shouldn't* have to wipe cache or dalvik, and after the nightly is flashed, you can flash your custom theme/kernel/whatever.
Also, the link at the top of the CM wiki is not the latest Nightly, it's the latest stable version (in this case, Supersonic-6.1.0).
EDIT: You do not need to flash gapps after each nightly, only the first time, or after a complete wipe.
its recommended to do full wipe before flashing a nightly, some of the updates might not be updated if flashing over an older version

Wherever you saw that is BS. 99% of the time, going from one nightly to the next, or from nightly to a just-released stable version, you don't have to wipe. The only time you do need to wipe is if there's a major framework change, or a bug that's been addressed, in which case people will say to do so in the Nightly thread.

It might be dumb to you, but I enjoy being on the bleeding edge when it comes to CM. Yeah, I flash a new rom almost every night, but I will also get the bugfixes and new features before you do. In my opinion, that makes it worth it.

[Q] Best rom? Revolution 2.0.8 vs CM6 vs CM7

As title says..what do you think is the best ROM? and why? I have finally rooted the DHD and I want to try something new
Pls suggests me
thanks in advance for the answers
Can't really comment on Android revolution as I have never used it, don't like sense and hadn't realised there was a no sense option.
Cm 6 is great and the latest release is very stable, but...
Cm 7 brings gingerbread I have had no stability issues, and have been running it since the builds where unofficially compiled from source, current nightly builds are great.
But everyone has different needs / likes, I have been a CM fan since I first installed it on my HTC Magic and it suits me, give Android revolution a go and see what you think you've nothing to lose except your time
yea you can't compare those roms
sense vs. clean 2.2 vs. clean 2.3
depending on what u prefer
some like sense, some like a full stable 2.2, some like to play test person and use 2.3 nightly
I used PNK22 for my day to day rom. For a time had no real problems with it other then no camara yet, this was and still is the only reason i am not using it today..

just a question..there's update manager or something like this in the CM7?
I mean, if I install build 18 then build 19 is released how can I upgrade?
download it from thread and flash or use rom manager (the paid version) to get notified and download it on your mobile + update

by simply installing the zip, you dont need to wipe anything as long as only a small amount has changed. Using rom manager or rebooting into recovery and installing zip with that will work.
but, if there is a large change you will need to wipe data etc. Just make sure you dont wipe your sd card
can someone give me a link to the "stable" version of cm7? the development forum is a bit confusing cause there are too many links of CM7 and I can't understand the one you are talking about
h t t p ://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=ace
There is not yet a stable ROM of CM7 for Desire HD.
I'm running Nightly Build #14 smoothly.
Greetz
i loved CM7, but i also liked the integration with sense so i went with revolution, but i prefer the gingerbread keyboard
I'm currently running Android Revolution 2.0.8 with a few customisations of my own and I love it. That said I can't use a ROM which doesn't have Sense UI.
If I could put up with not having the additions that Sense UI adds to a ROM, I'd probably be using a CM7 nightly.
It's Revolution 2.0.9 now (fast developer ), but I find this best for my needs personally. It's all about individuality, so try each one you like the look of and stick with the one that works best for you.

[Q] Most stable 'stock-like' rom

Hey guys
I'm flashing my mom's Desire (she has no need for any extra features above the desire's stock ones) so I'm wondering if you have any recomendations on a very stable and fast ROM?
I would have installed the stock desire rom, but since I rooted and s-offed the device already it seems a waste to lose it.
Thanks alot for your help
Oh and Sense is a must, she just learned how to use it, if i give her an AOSP rom she will have to learn to use it again...
USE THE SEARCH!!! This question was asked soo often.

Why would you root it at all when she doesn't need any extra functions? Also, you choose wrong timing to do so with official Gingerbread release in the upcoming weeks.
But, if I was doing so, I'd flash AuraxTSense 8.4.
sorry to barge in but i was wondering the same question! i know whats the OP need, he bought a new phone and giving the Desire to his mom. am i right?
even if you are not, i just bought SGS2 today and giving my Desire to my mum. need recommendation too. the most stock look and can be stable and no performance decrease in a long run. cuz i am gonna be away from her when college opens, so i dont want the phone to have trouble.
S-offed, rooted, Cm7 r2 hboot. but i'll go back to stock hboot maybe.
Try SGBS ROM!!

Teppic74's ROM's are all stock and I started out on them. They're great and have some great power saving features hard coded in.

2.10.405.2 INIT.D ROM v2.0
This version is mostly identical to the first except it has a minor mod to enable init.d scripts. No scripts are included, so this won't affect anything in itself. However, it gives much greater flexibility for mods, and is required if you want to make some of the changes below. This version of the ROM doesn't include the radio, so you must flash an up to date version yourself if you don't have one already. You do not have to install the first ROM before this. Updates: latest Superuser app and new boot image (closer to stock).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=422094&d=1287437934 <- Powersaving pack to flash at recovery AFTER ROM Flash
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=404595&d=1284981062 <- A2SD+ highly recommended so that your mum doesn't run out of room after a week of using the phone because contacts, emails and other app data also eat internal storage. Hit me up if you don't know how to partition her SD card to have an EXT4 partition
Basically, if you just flash the first two download links in the quote, you'll have rooted ROM that is entirely stock. No extra features or anything that isn't in the HTC RUU. Then if you flash the powersaving mod, nothing changes featurewise but internally the phone will use less power and her battery will last longer. She won't need to do a thing. With A2SD+, all you need to do is go through installed apps every now and again and move them to the internal storage (as the phone is "tricked" into installing apps on the EXT4 partition instead of on the phone itself, which means more apps available to be installed but just as fast as normal).
Wait, it's S-OFF and rooted? Why not give RCMix S Evolutionary Sense v2.0 a go?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
I've been using it personally since the end of May. No problems at all, just lacking updates (but the developer is busy withj real life, so that's that)
It's using the new Sensation and 2.3.3 Android version and, it's sense, and, it looks sexy.
EDIT:
Also, excuse my tutorial-like post above. If you can S-OFF and root the phone chances are you know half of that!

It was my phone for less than a week over the easter, rooted, s-offed installed rcmix v8 then I got myself my new Desire HD and been using that (sig).
For the Desire I installed RCMix's rom since i didn't mind any bugs, restarts and force closes since i thought i would update it on regular basis with the new versions. But as soon as I got my new phone, I left the country (student in uk) and just came back this week for holidays, and my mom has been complaining with reliability so I'm returning her phone to the most stable build of 'stock-like' rom.
If you mean flashing a RUU and then rooting and s-offing that just seems a bit of a waste of time. Since it's already rooted and s-offed i would like to keep it that way.

I might give it a try but im using sense 3.0 on my DHD and even with the newer CPU and more memory and more frequent updates it still has a few glitches. I searched through the thread and it seems that the ROM still requires some bug fixes (ppl talking about bugs with headset and other small bits and bobs)
Thanks everyone for your replies, I will check out the rom's and see which one will suit her best!
No probs.
I'm using a D2EXT modded version and I don't have any problems with the headset. The v2.0 is pretty ironed out, 2.1 is where people seem to be having issues. But for your mum I guess the Twppic74 ROM would be best, definitely!
@theguybefore Eh, but they're all pretty clear that you need the Cyanogen hboot? I guess you're right!

That's old info. Latest news is that it passed QC and should be released in the next three weeks.
Forget 3.0 etc port stuff etc., you know you need rooted stock. She doesn't care for Sense 3.0 but cares if bluetooth doesn't work with handsfree.
Pretty sure bluetooth works ok with this ROM. It's hit and miss and dependant on hardware. The RCMixS ROM as I said has bee really ironed out. There's also the InsertCoin ROM which he's more up to date with advancements!
Hope you find the Teppic74 ROM well! Served me well for many months.

Superb ROM - Once I'd managed to install it (only recently acquired a Desire from a Hero upgrade) it's been excellent.
I can't find fault: Bluetooth (inc car kit), camera, video, iPlayer, GPS, Speed etc etc all running nice and smooth.
The only thing is that the arcade boot screen might not be to your Mom's liking - although boot time is good.
Cheers,
Rob

Need Only links for Root and ROM Flashing

Hi guys,
first of all I have been using HTC Sets and Xperia Phones and have Cooked Several ROMs.. So i know much but this HTC Wildfire S I boought for my Dad who is least interested in MODs and other stuff. he just plays small puzzle games and reads mail, checks weather.. and ofcourse calls/sms
The thing is that its running Damn toooo slow now so I decided to S-Off it and Root and flash a stable Custom ROM based on Stock ROM either 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 but SHUD BE STABLE..
Surprisingly I found that Phone is already S-Off
Phone Details are
Hboot 1.03
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-OFF RL

So i guess I need to just Root and install recovery..
Can someone just link me to ROOT procedure and most stable Stock Custom ROM for Wildfire S?
thanks awaiting...

i'd wait a few weeks for cm9 release if i were you. it will be an alpha but even the pre-alphas were pretty stable and fast, i assume the releases will be perfect for daily use.

CM9 have poor camera and really u can never call them stable... I just need a Sense ROM as its for my dad and he likes Sense weather..
Btw.. I have flashed CWM recovery, Rooted phone but When I flash a sense 3.5 ROM I get reboots instantly on installing apps from Market... do i need to update Hboot for that as mine is 1.03 which seems old... dont know whats the reason.. tried two ROms and same problem...
Can someone guide me to a pure Stock ROM.. No changes made... with Stock kernel ofcourse...

if you ever want a custom rom with sense, i'd recommend benjamin's .sense. many people use it and it's considered stable.
well for cm9, the camera was glitchy until the last nightly but it's fixed now except for the preview, that's why i suggested you wait a few weeks. there are people waiting to port miui onto that cm9 and it has a cute look and suits family members great in my opinion
imo, i'd go for cm9 when it's stable and use fancy/beautiful widgets for the sense look your father's looking for. but it's your choice
hope you can find what you are looking for.

thanks mate for the Links... that was exactly what I was looking for.. I want to Flash the Asian WWE but cant get to download.. everytime I open it, it says Free Slots not available for download..
btw.. if I managed to download, Will it bring S-ON back or will have no effect on Bootloader Lock?
if it was only a bootloader unlock, a flash to the hboot would mess with it but since your phone is s-off, i don't think you'd lose anything. (my answer is from what i've been reading from people's experiences on forums, i didn't experience it myself)
because people have been flashing ruus or hboot upgrades with s-offs and have been keeping them. cwm would be replaced by the stock recovery but you can still re-flash it, so i don't think that would be a problem.
but still, don't quote me on that since i can't really tell you you'd be safe 100% until i did such procedure myself.

I might be wrong but this is what i think
The 1st link you posted is managed by the CM developers, the second link is Tripndroid who based his/her/their rom on the base of the CM developers rom. Basically adding and removing tweaks that this person/team likes and dislikes
If your considering rooting and installing a custom rom. I can recommend the 1st link been using their roms for more than a month now and it's very good rom. If there is anything about sense that you like and will miss try the Sense roms. (Viper and ARHD) are the two major ones that i looked into, before settling on CM10.

Hi there, I am running the ROM from the first post and it's brilliant. I have tried the second one and found it had quite a few bugs and was not nearly as finished as the first ROM. I am busy downloading alpha 5 now to try and am sure it will be just as great as the rest of his updates have been.
Thought I would give my info based on user experience of both ROMs. Also depends on what you looking for; quick ROM or fancy looking, awesome features or a stripped out version.
Well thanks guys, i think i'll go for the TeamNDVRu when i receive my phone, but still waiting september to see if it's worth it or not.
And what about the known issues ?
- Occasional soft-reboots with GPS On + Facebook ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=2184 )
- WiFi direct doesnt work
- MHL output is rotated incorrectly to portrait in horizontal mode (but workaround added since alpha 8 for hw decoded videos/youtube. Use bsplayer from playstore, almost all videos play with it in correct rotation in hwoverlay)
- No FM radio app in ROM. But Spirit FM works from market (it's commercial!)
- USB storage copies slower than normal
- Some paid apps loses settings/acconts due to this android jellybean problem: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=34880 Solution is to backup with Titanium Backup and restore to internal memory, not to sd

Some of them don't occur for everyone. (facebook+gps reboot)
None of them are really a huge concern if you are willing to try jelly bean. And for most of them there is a workaround, fix given in the text you quoted. I have a jelly bean rom installed and I have to say that I don't really feel any negative impact by those known bugs/issues. But do note, that most of these ROMs are not as stable as the 4.0.4 ROMs like ViperX.
I have been using tbaldens ROM and it has been quite good. The ones by trip I have found to be a bit unstable.
