Eternal search for software update. Normal?! - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
Last night, before going to bed I just for curiosity entered Configuration>Software Update and started a search. It just searched forever and now in the morning after waking up I turned my Note II screen on to check if the search was ended. So guess. Yeah, it was, after a lot of hours, still searching!
So, what's going on?! It's just with the Brazilian official ROM or Samsung servers are offline or buggy?!

You are rooted. ..device is modified? ... even with triangle away. .. it happens
handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)

Yes, I'm rooted! CF method, using stock kernel and counter "cleaned" using Triangle Away.
I read about the impossibility of updating over the air, but didn't know that even search wouldn't work.

No matter what I tried, device status would always be Modified, and update check would run forever. So for what I can say, it's "normal".
Sent and typofied with Note II

Yeah, my status is also "Modified"!
At least it's okay in the download mode info!

So without triangle, but just rooted it still won't update?
This is not good! So now I am stuck with an OS which doesn't update the errors which are still inside.
I was of the opinion that rooting (without CMW) and triangle away would still make the updates work!
So rerooting won't work?
I have KeepRoot, but that won't change a thing, right?
btw. This was the reason I had to flash my HTC One X...

Guys, one simple solution for the issue:
Enable the last option in Triangle Away: "System Modified Workaround"
Then just reboot and do the search, it will work. =)

Sprint pushing me a system update... Root safe?

Quick question,
I'm rooted w/latest Starburst and ICS theme, and I accidentally allowed the most recent Sprint system update to go forward (12/12/2011 @ 8am [EST]). I did so without asking (here) if this was safe. So is it? I searched other threads and it appears that some recommend going back to stock prior to updating, while other swear that "re-stocking" is unnecessary.
So far (after 10 mins) I still have an exclamation mark triangle with a blue andriod guy. Not sure if this is normal. Thanks!

If you aren't on the "factory" ODIN odexed ROM with EG30 modem, the update will fail. The update from Sprint relies on the system files being in a particular condition and the update will fail if they are not in that condition.
I have heard that some people have perfectly working phones after rebooting (but not updated). If you want EK02 ROMs, they're available in the development sub-forum and would be easier to manage than returning to stock and accepting this update.
EDIT: You may need to pull the battery to get out of the update. Supposedly once you put the battery in, you'll get to CWM, and then should be able to boot back into Starburst. I haven't done this, so I can't confirm.
Go back to stock.
The update will fail.
Why not flash the update from here? Android 2.3.6 + root is in the development section.
Sources? Personal experience.

You are correct, I pulled battery, was directed to CWM and rebooted system...all is fine (as it was before).
I saw QBKINGs videos on updating the Modem, but am not sure I want to go through with that until i figure out if the update is worth it. I am still not sure if this was an android version update, or an update that fixes LOS...or both. If I see a majority of members recommending this update, then I guess I'll jump through the hoops.
I tend to not have very much luck with tinkering with my phone. Something always goes wrong and then I loose 2 hrs of my day trying to figure out how to fix it. but I guess that's the name of the game...

I'll check this out.
I know I SHOULD know this, but... what would the process be for getting 2.3.6+ root along with starburst Rom. Would I flash the above recommendation then flash starburst over it, then load my ICS them last?
P.S. please forgive my incorrect use of the technical terms flash and load. As you can see from my questions, I only have a cursory understanding how rooting/flashing/loading.....just enough to get my phone to the customized state that it is currently in.
If it ain't broke.... that's my motto and if you are not savvy with the phone I definitely suggest you leave your setup alone. Using Odin has got to be one of the easiest things to do though but once again if it ain't broke....

Wasn't aware you were hoping to continue using starburst. I don't think starburst supports EK02 yet.

That was all I really needed to know...I am very happy with starburst... thank you!
Edit: last question For some reason I have a little "arrow loop" or "arrows in a circle" (in grey) in the middle of my top menu bar, and it is partially blocking the time. Did I induce this somehow, how do I make it go away (reboot didn't work)?

Indeed. You wouldn't believe how many people make one tiny mistake in Odin and BAM it's all over.

The arrows are the sync indicator (for any "pull" accounts or contact/calendar sync). You can check under Settings->Accounts & sync to see if any of your accounts are spinning. You can cancel the sync from there and restart it if you like. Sometimes they get stuck.

More to the point...I am rooted with stock EG30. Received update and failed so I assume I need to un-root in order to get this to install correct?

You can do that, or Calkulin has a Stock EK02 ROM in the dev section, which would be easier.
I've been running my phone stock with the EG30 ROM and radio(s) since the day I got it. I originally rooted it using ODIN just to download su (my applications / data were not effected); I do not recall what this method was called. I have not messed with it since due to lack of time.
Today I got a notice about a new OTA firmware update. I let it try to update but it failed with the following error:
Code:
E: Error in /cache/182a027d4e63.SPH-D710_update_EG30_to_EK02.zip (Status 7)
I could be wrong but this error doesn't seem indicative of a failure to update due to the fact that I have root.
I rebooted the phone and it's still at stock EG30 and it states that there is no update available. The only thing I've tried since was to flash (using stock recovery still) a pre-rooted version of this update but it failed to "signature verification".
Can someone give me a pointer on what I need to do to get this phone updated preferably WITHOUT having to reload my apps/settings?
Thanks!
Followed this thread here and was able to update perfectly without having to wipe my data:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20233048&postcount=376
I think the issue may have been that I previously "integrated into ROM" some software via TB. Now have to figure out how to re-root.

Very simple, just look at the first post in that thread and choose Option A.

Have you changed anything with the UI? Modified the build.prop? Changed the fonts?
You need to be completely stock for the OTA to apply.
I have removed google search field and enabled 5x4.. does that count?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
A modified launcher will cause an OTA failure. Any stock .apk will.

[Q] - Searching for updates, nothing happends.

Hi there!
Got the Note 2, rooted it, just to test. And then I went back to stock rom, recovery and reset counter.
But now when I search for updates it only searches, nothing happends. Is this something to worry about?
Edit: Turned of wlan and mobiledata, and it still only searches.

Its not rooted anymore, and even if so there is no updates, it should say so, not just in a never ending searching loop.
But anyway, got it to work when I reset the phone.
Is your status in settings, about the phone saying Normal or Modified?

[Q] Issues with OTA 4.2 Update

Hey there all,
I have a fully-stock Samsung GNex from the play store. Its trying to update me to 4.2 (if that's the right number... the newest ota.) Every time it tries to do this, it gets to about 25% before popping to a screen with the android lying down, with a red triangle and exclamation point. Everything I can find on Google relates to custom roms and recovery. Mine is 100% stock, and still doing it. What gives? Will post more info if requested... wasn't sure what to give, so...
Thanks in advance!

If you are absolutely, positively, 100% stock then you should have no issues. Never used a toolkit to root or unlock anything at all?
Regardless, if you care to learn a bit about your phone, you could start here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170 and learn to manually apply the update, or another custom rom for that matter.

I'm all for custom Roms, but I'm trying to keep this stock. No root, no ROM, no recovery. It is 100% stock. And if it should be fine, why isn't it?

Exactly what I DIDN'T want to happen....

So I've had the S4 for 1 month now and at first I really didn't want to root or change the ROM. I actually like the TW interface and think it's great as it is. I've been rooting and changing ROMs going back to the MyTouch, but for some reason the S4 had me worried. I debated over and over about doing it, but after getting tired of the bloatware, constant ads being displayed and wanting to stop the horrible startup/shutdown music, the time came for me to root it.
So, after pouring over many hours of reading and deciding the method, I went with the Chainfire route. I chose this because from what I read (and this may have been where I misunderstood something??), if I ONLY root the phone, don't install a custom recovery then I will still be able to receive OTAs (when and IF they come from TMO). So after a couple of heart-stopping moments at 2am last night with about 4 ODIN fails, I finally got it rooted. Turns out, the USB cable I was using might have been the problem. I went out to the car and got the original cable that came with the phone and it worked on the first try with that. I thought for sure I had hard bricked the phone when it came up with an error message at startup regarding a firmware problem.
Anyhow, to make a long story short, after doing the rooting, I checked the update option in settings and it's telling me the phone has been modified and is unable to receive updates. I then ran the triangle away program to reset the binary counter back to Samsung Official/Official, which it's reporting now instead of Custom, but then checking the updater it still reports the same thing. This is what I didn't want to have happen!
Any suggestions on how to rectify this or have I crossed that line and might as well just go ahead and put a recovery on there and do a backup and leave it at that until the day comes I decide to slap a custom ROM on it?
Thanks for letting me rant, but I would like some assistance if possible.

If you've reset your binary counter and have modified nothing else, just unroot and you should be able to receive updates again.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I went ahead and got SuperSU Pro because that's the only way the feature in Triangle Away will work. It was after 2am when I was rooting and having problems so I wasn't too sharp.
Thanks!
