Well, I just purchased a Note 2 and am still in the "evaluation phase". I really do like the phone, fast, amazing battery and awesome signal. However I am asking this because I ama wondering if I am getting all that I can be from my Galaxy Nexus before I decide to keep the Note 2 for $700+.
For reference I have recently been using the Euroskank CM10.1 releases with Franco's newest kernel and undervolting CPU to approximately the values in the LeanKernel Aggressive Undervolt levels as well as knocking down all IVA and CORE voltage 100mv.
I can generally stretch the Nexus' battery life to 13 or 14 hours, but that's with <2 hours of screen on time. If I am using it a lot 8 hours of battery life is lucky, if not less. This really isn't with any gaming or using it for listening to anything, just genrally Facebook and the internet. I do leave LTE on even though at work I can only get 3G. I have turned LTE off before but honestly I have never seen an increase in battery life from doing so. This goes to signal issue also, at work it will go to 30% or more time without signal and Cell Standby will be the second highest use of battery. I have a refurbed unit from Asurion that is version 10 and using the latest radios for CDMA and LTE. The Note 2 in the same usage environment reported 0% time without signal and Cell Standby was way down the list of power usage.
So, basically I am wondering, am I getting everything out of the Nexus that I can, or should I be getting better numbers. Maybe some of you on here can verify that the Note 2 is actually better for signal etc. or that I am just being delusional. Thanks in advance to all of you!
EDIT: Oops, meant to put this in the Questins section, accidentally put it here, Mods, please move!
No one?
Seriously? Even a piss off would be nice to hear, lol.
My signal is fine, my battery life is like yours (<2hr screen on) even with the OEM ext battery.

Thanks for the reply, good to hear my battery life isn't out of the ordinary. Signal does seem bad on mine though, I am going to call Asurion as this one runs unusually hot, uncofortably hot to hold even.
Yeah, mine gets fine signal, though the current radio firmware that came with the 4.1.1 OTA seems to have a problem hanging onto LTE signal indoors. I'm sure it'll get fixed in the next OTA (hopefully to 4.2.1). As far as battery life, it's what you would expect from an LTE phone...about 2.5 hours of screen-on time, maybe 3 if you're really lucky. Battery life can be affected by so many things like apps you have installed, screen time, cell signal, etc.
One thing I'll tell you, though...you'll find your battery life go up by at least 30% by keeping it connected to WiFi. If you're on a cell connection, your battery is going to zap a lot faster because as a matter of principle, cell modems are far more power-intensive than WiFi is because WiFi is a much shorter-range technology, thus the transmitters don't have to put out nearly as much power. Also, if not connected to WiFi, weak cell signals are going to drain your battery even faster than a stronger signal.
But, as long as you keep the phone on WiFi when you can, you'll find the battery life is no better or worse than most other LTE phones.

With WiFi, easily 15 hours with ~2 hours screen time. With LTE enabled, usually around 6-8 with ~1.5 hours of screen time. I also get pretty bad signal around my city.

Well the Note 2 destroys the Nexus in battery life and signal reception to be honest, but then again a 3100mAh battery should. I like the Nexus and I am trying to get myself to keep it over the Note because having AOSP rocks and so does saving like $850.

When I'm at home and getting -80 to -70 signal, I lose like 10% battery in 4 hours. When I'm at work and getting -120 to -100 signal, I lose like 50% battery in 4 hours.
Sucks....
Neither ROM nor CPU speed or scheduler or running apps or anything makes that big of a difference. The only single factor I know that can kill the battery faster is the screen.
I keep a charger at my desk, but I'm wondering if I can do anything to improve this situation. I tried JuiceDefender for a while. In theory it would help a lot, but it seemed to cause some problem where Grooveshark and some other apps kept trying to hit the internet and couldn't which seemed to kill my battery just as badly. Maybe if I get the pay version it would allow enough tweaking to help.
Any advice?
I'm noticing the same thing. Was at a bar the other night with really poor reception. I was only there for about 2-3 hours. Without really using my phone at all the battery dropped from about 75% to 15%. Meanwhile, at home where I get good reception I can routinely get 15-20 hours.
I definitely think signal quality substantially impacts the life.
My signals been crap since I updated my PRI. Don't know it its related just been doing it since then.
I moved recently and am in a little 'deadzone' area where I don't get very good 3G or 2G signal (thankfully its a short stay). When I leave my phone on, I found that I lose a tremendous amount of my battery (phone indicates that I am without signal 95-97% of the time typically) -- I had a blackberry curve before my evo and even that phone and its otherwise kickass (only good feature...) battery life would go down significantly or die from sitting over night.
What I have found that I can do to minimize the damage is turning off data and connecting to my local wifi and running some setCPU profiles locking the processor at 245mhz. Last night my battery decreased about 12% doing this.
Its funny because last week I was on vacation in south florida where I had awesome signal and if I turned my data off and connected the wifi, my battery literally would stay the same for 10 hour or so before ticking off a percent.
I'm running a stock rooted odexed ROM with Herver's #2 Kernel. I do not use a task killer or juice defender.

well yes, because you phone is continuously searching for a better quality signal.
I got a DINC with CM7, radio 2.15 and 2.6.38 incredikernel.
I personally felt battery drain was bad for the phone, the problem is that I had a kind of similar problem with Droid X devices. I am starting to believe it has to be with my carrier, but well I'll let you guys decide.
I flashed this rom, radio and kernel, because I read of battery draining issues. But I still feel is a huge battery drain for me with 3G on.
I have to keep disabling and enabling my 3G only when I need it, when I have seen other phones with 3G always on lasting about a day.
Just to give you an example, I wake up in the morning, unplug it, turn on 3G, listen to a radio station with screen turned off for 30 minutes, turn the screen on and battery percentage goes 20% down, so I'm left with 80%.
That would mean, if I listen to online music for 3 hours online, my phone would be dead.
Is this normal for you guys?
I appreciate any comments and experiences, thanks.

Streaming is battery intensive, you are basically downloading the entire time.
I have to say battery life is one of the most subjective aspects of smartphones let alone android devices. For one, your signal strength relative to nearby towers will affect battery drain. Secondly, everyone uses different batteries ranging from stock to extended so there is little consistency. Our phones with the stock battery do not last longer than 3-4 hours with 3G on, so what you stated is not unusual.
From what I remember, of the droid phones that came out last summer the Droid X and Evo 4G are said to have "better" battery life fresh out the box compared to the Incredible and that's maybe by an hour at best. You should expect to see a lot of "use wifi" or "my battery life is impeccable because of ..." type posts in response to yours to be blunt.

Updating your Preferred Roaming List (PRL)
Verizon Wireless is constantly making advancements in our roaming technology to provide you with superior roaming capabilities. By updating your Preferred Roaming List, you will have access to these enhancements, which may include:
Longer battery life
Fewer dropped or blocked calls
Clear, crisp connection in even more areas across the United States
Ability to connect to the digital network in more parts of the country
how about emulating JD in tasker?
First of all, I'm not in Verizon, it's actually a mexican carrier.
I do understand 3G is very battery demanding, I just do not understand how is it that you guys can last a full day with 3G, I've never or heard very little of users turning off their 3G so it can go for at least a day.
I mean, if you guys run a quick test for 30 minutes of listening to some radio station in 3G, could you see if your battery drains really quick?
I've seen GSM users with 3G always on, and they never ask for a charger like I do.
I'm always looking for ways to charge my phone and they just go all day without a charger.

I recently did this after updating from stock .28 radio to .07.07 and have noticed a HUGE battery life improvement. I understand that these results vary quite a bit but beforehand I was experiencing what you describe: big battery drain while 3g was on at all. Also running stock+ 4.06.605.3 ROM by jermaine.

I last a day and a half with 3g consistantly on. I am not running a sense rom though. I've found sense rom's drain battery a lot faster due to how many Widgets are used and constant syncing. If you can I would try an AOSP rom and see if there is a difference.

That is completely normal for a CDMA based device. GSM based phones suck power at a fraction of the rate per MB downloaded because signal strength isn't linked to the broadcast power required. Broadcast power is static. I've seen my dInc go flat dead sitting on a table inside 4 hours. In ideal circumstances, it might go 8 or 9. A GSM devices utilizing data on the same levels will achieve uniform battery life regardless of signal strength and outperform CDMA devices on battery life by twice, if not triple the time. However, CDMA will provide higher data rates. LTE is unquestionably the most efficient megabytes/watts used. To perform the same function on an LTE device (your radio app), it would have consumed between half and a quarter of the power. A GSM device would have been about half the power.
3G electric charges
I know what the OP is talking about. I had DInc1 running OMGB, and it would last 10-17 hours depending usage with 3G on all the time. Now, I have a DInc2 running Condemned CM7.2 v1.6, but it can only last like 8 hours idle with 3G on. If anyone has a solution to this, it would be nice to know. I also tested if it's 3G by turning off mobile data; without 3G, the phone lasts a long time, so it's not an app or battery issue.
Simple question which uses less battery ? Thanks
Sent from my Samsung GNexus <3
WiFi for sure. It eats more battery sitting connected the entire time, but is transmitting for much shorter periods to get the same data moved, and doesn't drain as much searching or holding signal.
Saves your data plan too
To save me starting a new thread, Does any one else see a more prominant drain on WiFi in 4.0.4 compared to Previous Versions? Nothing Major, just seems that I'm close to using the same battery when Idle and disconnected from WiFi?
Saying that, I rarely use it when at my Desk (8 hours a day roughly) so the amount of data is minimal. Best just using Radio? strong signal area so that's not a real issue.
Same here....since i'm on 4.0.4 standby drain on 3g is less then on wifi...strange

No. I usually work from home and tend to be on Wi-Fi for most of the day as a result. Overall, battery life for me on 4.0.4 is an improvement—though that might also be due to the improved radio baseband.

I haven't noticed more or less drain from WiFi since going to 4.0.4.
In most circumstances wifi should be better. If you are at a great distance, have a weak signal, or perhaps a older router than has some compatibility issues with the Nexus radio you may get results that differ from this.
When I first got my Nexus I noticed a significantly higher idle power drain when I was at work vs at home. This was never a problem with my old HTC Desire, but for some reason I had high wifi power usage at the office even with a strong signal. My boss upgraded the old router only weeks later and the problem disappeared.
Yeah, I'm not overly worried as it is minimal but, for me, higher then in 4.0.3.
My wife and I both got new Verizon Galaxy Nexus phones about two weeks ago. Having heard of the poor battery life, I immediately bought an official Verizon extended battery; wife stayed with the stock one. After both of us set up our phones and went through a few charge cycles, I noticed something odd: while her battery would last 24-36 hours with mid-level use, mine would die within 9-12 hours with minimal use (it has never made it overnight).
My first thought was that some widget or app was syncing or otherwise waking the phone when it shouldn't, so I removed all the widgets from my homescreens and disabled all syncing but Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts. I also turned the screen down to minimum brightness. Still had the fast discharge issues.
Next step: uninstall all apps that I've downloaded. Battery still drains too fast.
Finally, I did a factory reset of the phone, and did not download any new apps. I thought maybe there was some deeper setting that I had overlooked that was causing the issue. After the reset, the battery had its worst performance yet at ~9.5 hours with bare minimum use (mostly overnight). Wife's phone was still going strong with about 34 hours of usage.
I am in wifi coverage all day (except when driving to/from work), so I have kept that on. Bluetooth and GPS have been off the whole time. Average time without signal is ~2%. 4G is also on. I also tried 1-2 charge cycles with the regular battery to make sure that it wasn't just a faulty extended battery, but it predictably resulted in even worse discharge time.
I have kept track of the battery usage stats both in the standard Settings as well as Badass Battery Manager, but nothing has seemed out of the ordinary. Right now I am charging up my wife's standard battery in my phone, and she is using my extended battery, to make double sure that I didn't just end up with two bad batteries.
Both of us are using stock ICS 4.04, and are not rooted.
She uses her phone for Google Talk, Facebook, Tamadroid (Tamagotchi app), etc. throughout the day (don't have more exact usage stats at the moment), while mine has been sitting practically unused for the last few days while I try to see if my various steps work, so the top drainers have been (in order) Mobile Standby, Phone Idle, and Screen On.
Last night when we went to sleep, my phone was at ~70% on the extended battery, and hers was about 14%. This morning, mine was dead and hers had 5% left.
Is there anything else I could have missed that could contribute to this issue? Unfortunately I do not have access to to my actual usage graphs/stats right now, or I would link them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, it's back to Best Buy to exchange for a new phone.
UPDATE: This was a hardware issue. Exchanged phone and saw immediate, drastic improvement. See my last post for more detail:

It sounds like the battery to me. Not all batteries are created equally. The quality of the components is going to directly lead to the discharge rate, degradation over time, etc. It sounds like the battery you were sold sucks and the stock one would probably work better.
I certainly can't think of anything else you can try. It would seem that swapping batteries with your wife for a day would tell you for sure if it's something to do with the phone or the battery.

To make a better comparison, compare screen usage as it is the big eater of the battery. You should find it on battery usage.

Got a new extended battery from Verizon, and it seemed to be working a lot better during the day. However, once I went to sleep the charge dropped like a rock! I am doing a new charge cycle with Badass Battery Manager watching over it, and will post pictures when it is done. I have no apps other than fully updated stock apps and the battery manager. This is incredibly frustrating because my wife's phone is not experiencing any issues overnight. It is looking more and more like this is a faulty handset...
Got some usage stats now. Here is the first full cycle on the new extended battery; seemed pretty good at about 1d 5h. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill from there.
looks like your phone was working for a signal alot of the time.
Here are the results from the next cycle; there is already a noticeable drop to just over 22h.

yeah you have terrible signal. your phone is trying to push for a better signal, which causes more power drain.
if you look at your signal graph, you hit red signal, which is near dropped signal range.
This is from last night. After letting the battery completely discharge, I recharged it while the phone was off. It hit 100% around 12:30AM, when I went to sleep. Fast forward to 8:00AM, and the phone has discharged 66%! Obviously, I was not answering calls/texts/etc. during this time.

Yup, he seems to have a lot of horrible coverage in his area or his phone is in a terrible spot where there is hardly any signal.
Test your phone around your town or home.
Your signal should pretty much look like this
I'm usually full bars, rarely do I drop below to three.
If it helps, disable 4g until you need it.. it will saviour some of your battery.

This makes sense, but for that my wife's phone is usually in the same general area and is getting significantly better life. Could the signal difference at my work compared to home really cause that big a discrepancy? I am usually at 3 bars, according to Phone Radio's settings. This would also not account for the massive overnight drain that her phone does not experience 6 feet away.
I installed Badass Battery Monitor and CPU Spy on her phone for comparisons; I will check her signal levels when I get home.

I've seen way too many people having this issue recently.. .My literally only issue is my screen, its covered in tint. Yellow, red, blue, purple :/ funny I get a perfect hardware phone and get a ****ty screen. Not going to return it to take chances.
Its possible you may need to update your radio - depending on it, for various users it has different effects on battery life and signal.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but.. the RADIO should help or make your coverage "signal" worse. If its hardware or just horrible signal the % loss should be a lot higher with normally about an hour of screen on it should show around 20-40% signal loss.
Normally signal loss is around 2-4%.
I would keep an eye on your signal bar "on the status bar" if it drops - plummets to an empty bar with an × then its possible you have a hardware issue. If it don't drop or if it does check the signal loss occasionally to see how much is lost.
If its horrible signal I do suggest a new radio to help you, if you dabble in the radio world.. please read carefully on them. They can cause serious issues if you get a bad download or wrong download "md5 mismatch". At the least harmful it can boot but without any type of signal etc.
Its easy to use but can be dangerous to your device if not handled properly
bOx Stash - https://www.box.com/shared/d8a46b7252c38069deb1
Mine is 4% loss also. I've never noticed any significant differences in battery life going from the cornfields to the city.
This phone is known for radio issues. It's pretty disappointing but I've just grown used to it.
Which radios are you currently on? Settings, about, baseband. Should say fc04 fc05 if you're on the latest.
Some people have better luck with different radio combinations depending on their phone.
From your battery Stats its like you barely use your phone. Could you show a screen shot of cpu spy?
Would you consider a different rom and kernel?

Assuming you mean me, give me a few hours? Gonna throw on a full charge and wear it down. I'll give my screens of my phone when its near dead, I heavily use my phone. I'm surprised I was on 2hours with half battery after watching videos.

I have the same baseband as this image. I just added CPU Spy this morning. I will add some screenshots of it after my next full charge cycle.
If it is a faulty radio, would it be in my best interest to exchange the phone at Best Buy? I have about another week to do that if necessary.
I'm having similar issues, although it doesn't seem as bad. I'm going to take the chance of exchanging it because I also have 4G dropping issues, because like you said, we've got a week, and I'll exchange the phone as many times as I need to until I get a *new* one without any issues.
Kind of disappointing, my screen seems great.
My battery was doing well, had about 70+% remaining after about 5-6 hours on battery, then in a one-hour stretch it dropped 30%. I'm running battery doctor, but it really isn't telling me what could have caused that. Even after a half-hour con-call this morning, the battery was still at 80% or so until noon.
It seemed to fall off the cliff when I left the house for about an hour to run some errands. But 30% when you're not doing a lot with it in an hour's time frame seems like an issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to debug this?

I'd like to know as well. I'm at 33% at 7 hours usage.

Were you using GPS? That's killer on the battery when you combine it with other drains
Also perhaps you ventured into a low signal area, so the phone was straining the battery to connect to a poor signal?
Samething here ... even after a factory reset & disabling a bunch of bloats.
It idles fine @home but really sucks @work ... I lost 30% (last 3hr idling) with the screen off (wifi off too, location is off, greenify running).
Phone barely lasts 2 days (with ~1hr scrren on, 1-call/2-TxtM a day, no emailing ... minimal usage).
One thing I notice... data signal @work is pretty bad (3G) while better @home (LTE).
This is a Verizon phone. My G2 was much much better, same exact setup.
This might sound like the opposite of what is intuitive, but your battery life at work may *increase* if you turn *ON* the wifi.
The reason is that you have poor 3G signal strength. So every time your phone updates anything data related, even just checking that you have an email, the phone burns a lot of battery trying to squeeze data over the poor signal from the cell tower.
But, if you turn on wifi, the phone can check all the data stuff using the wifi, which is far less battery intensive compared to trying to talk to the cell phone tower far away.
So try that, just turn on wifi *particularly* when you are in a poor cell phone reception area. Even though you now have an *extra* radio turned on in the phone, it should greatly help while at work or in any low signal area that has wifi available.
when did you get the phone? you have to do a few full charges and disable some Google bloat for the battery to last. and remove batter doctor. don't use apps like those task killers that keep themselves in the background like avast security. i just use lookout since it doesn't overly do it's job like avast.
What carrier are you on? If its T-Mobile, then its probably the My T-Mobile app. Drained my phone like crazy, T-Mobile also knows its an issue, but haven't said anything on fixing it.
Just uncheck all the boxes in the settings and it should stop, if not try the debloater tool.

This will still drain it heavily even on wifi. It will continue to struggle to get good bars and will do what it takes in order to achieve good reception.
At work I always have wifi on and my drain is very high.
A weekend at home and I easily got SOT of 4 hrs+.
Work day, I struggle to get SOT of 2 hrs+
Very interesting approach, and it seems to work. I tried this overnight, and the falloff didn't seem nearly as great as when the wi-fi setting is off.
Many thanks.
I'm on verizon and when my phone switches to 3G it gets super hot upper middle area of the screen and the battery drain is outrageous. I have to disable data otherwise it would probably burst into flames. My previous unit did not have these problems. Wish I would have kept it.
