So is data broken on JB? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Lots of reports of data not working properly on the new JB update. Is it safe to say hold off on updating until its fixed?

It works fine though the new modem, k3, doesnt seem to work as well as h9.

It's worked pretty well for me on AT&T, stock as a vanilla. Must be because I got a message from AT&T yesterday that I reached 65% of my data over the weekend, hehe,

I would love to try and update my phone again but I'm afraid of it killing my data connection once more and me having to go back to ics.

I agree with this, I get about 25% greater d/l and 50% greater upload speeds with LH9 modem over the newer JB LK3...generally speaking. It fluctuates some though.

I mean my data actually tuns itself off and I have to restart my phone to get it back.

Huh sounds a bit like my phone. Does your data randomly wink out then takes a while to come back? With Juicedefender, occasionally data will not ever return without a reboot.

Yes it was just like that when I updated to Jelly Bean. Once I reverted back to ICS all was good again. I really want Jelly Bean but am worried that if I update again the same thing will happen.

Well in 4.1.2 (NexusMod Reloaded) with K3 modem, the data droppage rate was absolutely terrible. However with the h9 modem, it was more bearable. 3g would wink out for a couple seconds and reconnect immediately although juicedefender still wasnt working too well. I say, create a nandroid backup and flash a 4.1 rom of your choice. Run with it for a couple days and if youre still having issues, go back to your backup. As long as you don't upgrade your modem, shouldnt be too bad.

Try the update again and see what happens. Did you do a factory reset the last time you did the update? If not I would give that a try if the problem happens again after the update. Reading through various forums, it seems that a factory reset after the update has fixed some of the issues people are having.

Odd...I've actually had exactly the opposite experience with the new modem. My cellular connection seems to be a bit stronger and my wifi range has increased significantly. Whereas with the H9 build, I could only go a couple of rooms over from the router in my house and still maintain a wifi connection. Now I can go anywhere inside the house and still have a connection.

I have used Bacon Rom , Loser Rom and stock rom with zero problems with data

Yeah I did a full factory reset thrice . I was even having the problem where most of my calls I would make would beep once then disconnect and the phone would go to the lock screen.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

My issue that I experienced ever since I flashed the ATT official JB update was that I could send texts and use data and everything, but my contacts would go missing, I couldn't receive text messages and since my contacts would go missing the people in my messaging app would show their number and not their name. I would restart my phone and it would work for a little bit and then would go back out again.
I also switched from the LoserRom which is when I first started experiencing this. I don't think it's ROM related as far as what the developer is doing because I'm experiencing the same thing on ktoonsez AOKP rom.
I also thought it was modem related so I flashed my the LH1 to the CDLK3 Modem and was still experiencing issues. So I went to the CLI5 modem and it was still not receiving texts.
I started to think its my sim card. I turned my phone off took the sim card out and put it back in and powered my phone on. It seems to be working now.
Sorry for this kind of lengthy and out of order.
Please if you have any idea or have experienced this issue as well, please let me know.

Tried that and it still didn't work. Seems like more people are having data problems also.

Modem Issues Since ICS Update

Hey guys,
I was wondering if I can use the EL29 modem with ICS. I have had many issues with ICS and my phone, with the stock ROM and three other custom ROMs. I even had trouble with FH13 and FF18. I had many problems with my GPS not working and I had problems not receiving calls or being able to make calls.
I had to go back to GB in order to get my phone working. Which I like GB but I had to update to ICS to stop getting the annoying update notification.
Anyways, anyone else have this trouble. After talking to Sprint's super nerd tech support, I am 100% positive that my phone just hates anything but EL29.
You can use any modem you like on any build, whatever gets you the best results.

Thats good to know that I am not the only one. I would run GB still if it wasn't for the OTA update constantly spamming me to upgrade. No matter what I did it was either trying to download all the time killing my battery or it was telling me to install every ten minutes.

seems quite a few people that i know have been having issues since upgrading to stock OTA jelly bean. constant crashes and battery drain. the stock messaging app seems to crash the most, apparently. does anyone know what's going on? i'm on xquizit JB, so i've only experienced some battery drain, some times...

I think it's partly corrupt media files or people not factory reseting after the ota.

Jelly Bean question

I've been sticking with ICS on my at&t s3 since I updated to jellybean on kies and had to revert back via Odin. Reason being is because after I updated my phone kept dropping data and the battery which usually lasted 14 hours lasted only 6 hours.
My question is if the OTA update has fixed any of the bugs. Also, do I really need to update to jellybean? I'm curious on what I'm missing but I am also reading about all of the bugs.
I am full stock ics right now.
Thank you

I had updated via kies and I never experienced the issues you stated. It ran pretty smooth. Battery life didn't seem to be affected to much for me.
Only thing you are really missing out in is Smoother Interface Transitions, Google Now, Improved Voice Search (pretty much comparable to Siri), Improved Notification Bar (with expandable notifications) and some other UI improvements. See this link for more info: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history
Its possible your first upgrade was a bad flash.

Yeah I thought about that and then my second child was born so everything that wasn't on the main burner got put on hold so I never got back to updating it again truth be told. When I got the pop up from at&t about the OTA I Google searched and found that its about 50/50 for those that have problems and those who don't.
If and when I do update should I factory reset my phone before or after?

So far my experience has been similar to yours as for the battery life. I was getting 14+ hours on stock ICS after calibrating but after I tried calibrating Jellybean I maxed out at 6-7 hours.
I heard that there is a bug where if the SD card is installed it drains the battery.
Try removing the sd card and then reflash the Rom and root then calibrate.
Also it might take a clean flash without the sd card in to make the battery better in jelly bean. Wipe data/factory reset and then, if using Odin to flash 4.1.1, enter download mode (volume down + Home button + power button).
To answer your question about the bugs, battery life, no they aren't fixed but they can be worked around. I'm getting 16 hours on jelly bean right now.
Here is a link to the calibration app:

Having trouble with SMS issues please help!!!

I'm sure this question has been answered b4 and I'm sorry. So just hear me out. I've had problems over the past week with getting my phone to receive SMS and calls. I can make calls but I'm not able to receive them. I was on the phone with the sprint the other night and they were doing all these things to try and fix it. They had me do dial pad codes and my phone did not respond to those. They had me send some SMS messages to myself the text went through but didn't go back to my phone. And when I reflashed the modem and rom on Sunday afternoon I lost 3g I used to get almost 5-6 bars in my house on 3g and now I barely get 1 bar. I am on Stock Gb27 rooted stock kernel but I was on agats Gb27. I need help I would like to avoid getting a new phone. Thank you in advanced

i dont think the ics dialer idea would work...you can keep trying different modems and see what happens or tell sprint that they suck and demand an airave..they will probaly charge you for it..
As for which phone to get...there is no way for me to answer that man...But i'll tell you this. When i get my next phone it will be the water/dust resistent S4..But i dont see a new phone helping the signal..
You could change you're prl to a roaming one..there are guides here and there online..But this only works for sprint not boost..If you're on sprint..a custom prl would be my move..

Sorry..i seen you have signal now..ive been jumping around and helping others in about 3 different forums. If you're problem is just sms or mms. I would wipe the cache for the sms app in app manager. Then boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache.Reboot. If it is still wonky..try checking you're apn settings..if they are wrong.change them and reboot.
Should I just look online to see if they're wrong.

For right now with the bootloader Knox issues, I'm sticking with 4.12 and using the the 4.3 MK7 radio. I've gone through them all and this
improved my signal and battery time significantly. More over, with this modem improvement, I've fallen in love again with my finely tuned
Jedi-x20 all over again. ptmr3, still my idol!!!
I also flashed the MK7 modem. Haven't really noticed a vast improvement..and it also didn't deliver some of my calls and went straight to vm. But hoping it makes a difference as its used more throughout the day. .
To all people having problems,
I personally had to flash the deodexed rom about 3 times before the problems got fixed. First time camera wasn't working but I read somewhere that when first on stock taker pictures and then update the kernel. Second it was super sluggish...barely moving. Third time everything worked fine and have yet to come across and problems.
Just remember to keep erasing cache and dalvik after every flash/step.

Man people, I'm sorry for all of you. I received it while using tweaked but could not flash it so I went back to stock image using Mobile odin and triangle away. After going complete stock I received the update again then went ahead and installed it using the stock recovery. I gave up root because I'm impatient and couldn't wait 24 hours until the rooted version came along and the only thing I miss is viper audio and cerebus. So I went the stock route and after it booted up, I signed in to my Google account and soon as the home screen came up I did a factory rest and haven't had 1 hiccup. The phone is fast as hell, the battery is about the same, my 4glte even seems faster than before when browsing using the stock browser, not chrome. The keyboard is great now as well as camera, and nothing bets the apps to sd. So in conclusion do a factory rest and forget about root IF you want all to run flawless. I'm sure there will be a way to regain root again. Happy flashing.......stock style.
