I know... it's tethering, not teething, lol.
SHG-I747 AT&T
Installed JB 4.1.1 via Kies
Installed CW Recovery - pulled batter - installed Team Epic Root
All Good
Installed Titanium Backup Pro
Uninstalled Tethering Provision (to disable check for AT&T Tethering Plan)
Unisntalled Bloatware per list in first post of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728126
Not realizing the Tethering toggle was built-in to Settings > Advanced > Tethering I downloaded WiFi Tethering for Root, wouldn't show up on network selecting Auto and S3 profiles.
Try a couple others (supposedly not requiring root), one crashed "stopped working" when launching but SSID showed up on network and blue tether icon showed up in status bar. Another launched without crashing, blue icon in status bar. Both I can connect to via my Windoes 8 computer but get a status of "Limited" with no Internet access. Apps on phone show the computer is connected.
Here's the major problem. If I just uninstall all the tethering apps and go into Settings > Advanced > Tethering and try to toggle wifi or USB tethering the settings app itself crashes "settings app has stopped working"
I did a TB backup of the apps prior to all this, but then did another TB backup late last night. So that tethering provisioning things can't restored as it appears, at least default, the TB backup overwrites the previous backup instead of making an incremental backup.
I'm at a loss what to do. This is my first Android device. The Sys Admin gut in me says I need to start from scratch (reinstall stock ROM, reinstall CW recovery.. bla bla bla.) But not sure how to even do that (can I even use Kies now that CW recovery is on there or do I need to find the stock rom file and copy to the internal memory and use CW recovery or use Odin to flash stock ROM - hoping I don't need to reflash ROM, will take forever to reinstall my apps and settings in trying to solve Tether crash!)
In desperate need of some advice.
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. The problem is all the posts and methods out there essentially became defunct when the JB 4.1.1 update came out a few days ago yet you still have users unknowingly recommending the same methods because they were still on ICS. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.

Hi, I'm new to rooting. I bought a Viewsonic G Tablet this weekend and that was my first rooting adventure (to TnT Lite). Now that I have the tablet, I want to root my HTC Evo so I can broadcast wifi for it.
Overall, I'm happy with the setup of the EVO, so I don't feel the need to change anything as far as a massively different ROM.
What's the least invasive suggestion for getting my phone to broadcast, short of paying sprint for the feature. Thanks in advance.

Use Unrevoked 3.3 from there website http://unrevoked.com/ then pick the evo and follow the steps listed. Then go to the market and download wifi teather for root users (it's a green wifi symbol). After that you should be good to go.
Or you can download a rom that has all that in it already.like sprint lovers rom.
Sent from my evil evo!!
hey there - I actually just did this very thing - I can't answer as to unrevoked but I did this without that method and without flashing a ROM or flashing a recovery tool (technically my phone is NOT rooted though)
I followed the long procedure as to backing up my wimax/RSA keys and I downloaded z4root
I could not get z4root to work until I factory reset my phone - let me just WARN you that resets EVERYTHING even your gmail account (which I can't remember the password at the moment)
it even removed some apps I had on the phone when I got it (like flash)
I then had to manually download a file explorer (trying to install z4root through adb shell would not work without su access it seems)
second thing I did was install z4root through the file explorer (I used ES btw) - then I chose temporary root access and all was well through adb shell and my phone prompted me to allow the su
after that I installed wireless tether & barnacle wifi tether (after testing with my friends iphone 3 it seems barnacle doesn't have the latest wifi settings/security but it sure ports a lot faster than wireless tether - at least in our case)
I rebooted my phone (and checked about the rooting to be sure) and once back in the OS I did have to activate z4root again(temporary root access) but it worked and I was able to launch barnacle wifi tether again
this is by no means a test I can guarantee & I just did it like 4 hours ago so I haven't really used my phone hardcore or reinstalled any apps but so far very noninvasive to the phone (i'm still looking into getting complete root access with my stock ROM - can update when I have more progress)
As a previous user said, the quickest and easiest way is to go the unrevoked method, and it should put you in a stock htc rom, that has root access. I think it comes with the wireless tether app, if not, just search wireless tether, it is a green wifi signal. The app allows you to password protect it or allow connectivity via mac address labeling.

Z4 root is good for temp access. It won't nano unlock. That's why you have to do a temp root every time you reboot. If you never want to flash a rom it won't be to much trouble to temp root again.
Sent using my EVO running AZRAL X V 3.1
As previously stated, use Unrevoked. It will root your CURRENT rom meaning no wiping necessary. When it's done your phone will be exactly the same as it is now except with root access. Then the app you want to download is called Wireless Tether for Root Users, it's available free from the Android market. That's all you need to do, the whole process should take you maybe 10 minutes.
thanks

i almost posted this same thread just now... but i'm a searcher lol. I will also be unrevoking a friends evo soon for the same reason and wanted to keep it stock.
Thanks again everyone
Had to try a couple times, not sure why. but it's all good now. Broadcasting wifi via wifi tether, and nothing else is different. Thanks to everyone for the help.
i bet you will change roms in 2 weeks...
you wont be sorry.
Let's build a FAQ here to help everyone get the full benefits of this outstanding ROM! Let's not make this into a discussion thread so that it makes everyone's search alot easier to find what they need. I'm starting this since there is no FAQ or WIKI in the OP.
I'll start first...
MMS FIX: clear cache for your messaging app (whatever you are using) under Settings >>> Applications >>>Manage Applications>>All. Reboot into recovery, clear cache, Dalvik cache, and finally reboot.
I already posted this in the general forum but this seems more fitting. I installed CM7 on my Evo earlier today. Everything was amazing until I realized that the market app wouldn't work. Within a second of me tapping the icon I was back at my home screen. I wiped all my caches and wiped+ reinstalled CM7 but still no luck. I've reverted to a backup ROM for now until I can get this sorted out. Any help would be awesome!
Issue:
Bad Front Facing Camera Pics "Dark"
Bad Video on any setting other than "High"
Tried Different kernels:
SavageZen 0.0.3, 0.0.4, 0.0.5 no luck
Issue: Titanium Backup does not successfully install when I attempt to update from the market. Think it might have something to do with the GPS, but I don't know...
Attempting workarounds, anyone know if I can use Root Explorer to remove it and then re-download?
Hi Everyone
I would like to share what I have learned over the last week. First off. AWESOME ROM. Great job!!!
I discovered after many hours that a backup with Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 does not restore on my HTC EVO no matter how I do the backup (i.e. manual or using Rom Manager). Good news is that if you revert back to 2.5.0.7 when you do the backup (either method), I have success on restore. I did the GPS fix by reverting back to a prior image and using the ##GPS….# method and then restored my CM7 and I am happy to report GPS is working.. I did flash Savaged-Zen-V0.0.5-CFS-HAVS-NoSBC-WiMAX-GB-Signed to see if that would improve things. I did them together so I can’t be totally positive which one fixed it. I believe the combination works though. 4G also works which is good news. I do not see signal strength or the icon in the notification but the Wi-Fi shows it is 4G connected (does not say sprint though). It also is consistent in range with what I had with the Sense ROM.
I also just confirmed that the Wi-fi hotspot also works on 3G (no 4G in my hood). I connected my laptop and ipad without problems and connected to the internet.
I tried everything flashing / restoring, etc to get Sprint Voicemail to work. I gave up and downloaded a program called YouMail. So far, I am happy with it (works very similar to the Sprint product and it is free).
Camera appears to also be working. I will do more tests.
I will keep you posted on the things I learn over the next few weeks. I hope some of you find it helpful.
I will answer questions if I can. Thanks for the great ROM. I look forward to updates.

Issue: No Disk Mode after flashing tast kernel.
Fix: Use savage kernel. Make sure its a Gb wimax kernel.
Issue: No WiFi tethering (bluetooth and wifi tethering both broken). I won't work in 3 or 4g.

Tried that. Didn't work. Used Root Explorer to search for all Titanium backup files. Erased. Checked in /system/app nothing there as well. Checked in Applications list to see if it was there, it was. Can't seem to erase it completely off. Tried to redownload and reinstall from market. No go.
hey guys, for the mms fix, i can't seem to get that to work. mainly because the clear cache buttons are greyed out for the original messaging app and chompsms

You need to flash the proper Gapps for CM7. Do a google search for 'Gapps-GB' and you should find the download for it. Save it to your Sd-card and flash it using recovery. Hope this helps.
I am not sure what the problem is. Are you using the built in wi-fi tethering. I read somethere what the tethering app does not work.. I have had no problems with the build in wi-fi tethering. I ran my phone yesterday with GPS and some calls, text msg, etc and left it on overnight to see how it would do. I woke up and still had 38% after over 20 hours since last charged.
I am currently expierencing terrible wifi reception on my evo, also the data seems to go in and out of connection sometimes
also my mms is not working properly and I cannot seem to fix it, I have ran fix permissions in ROM Manager, Clear cache in settings, and reseting app data in Titanium... I dont want to wipe my phone (too many settings to mess with to get it back to how I like it ) but I am willing to if thats how it will get fixed...
After rooting my sprint evo 4g my market no longer works. I have tried the advice from gat (gadgets and tablets) but that did not work. What do I do???
Need more specifics. "Not working" is very general haha
Does this mean:
1) Won't load
2) Won't download apps
3) Isn't showing up at all
4) Is just force closing like it's its job
It will let me even search for an ap most of the time but will not let me download and will force close every time. This puts a damper on tethering because I cannot download the wireless tether after root ap. I'm still on clockwork mod and rooted via unrevoked
I'm actually downloading another ROM, MikFroYo 4.5, in hopes that flashing another ROM would give the market another chance to work properly. All the people I know that have rooted androids, including one with an evo, have fully working markets and can still download aps. I am not sure of another way to get the wireless tether after root or titanium backup. I have been trying to learn from forums and google but I seem to be coming to a dead end on this topic. It seems to be happening to some other people but nobody has given them a useful answer it seems. The best answer I found was from GAT but they were specifically doing the process on a tablet and after trying this process my market was still a lame duck. Also, while someone is checking on this thread (thanks so much by the way, this is the second time I tried to get some feedback on this forum and the first went by unanswered for about a half a week), what would be a good ROM that would not take away 4g capabilities, let me get an ap back like sprint t.v. but still allow most sprint aps (nascar, blockbuster, nova, etc.) to be deleted (although I think I can do this with titanium backup if I can ever get it downloaded), improve speed and battery life, and not be very glitchy/buggy?

Okay, go to the 2nd post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900584
There's a .zip for the stock android market. Boot into recover (if you don't have rom manager, turn off phone, volume down + power, select recovery) and flash the zip. Should install the working stock market. I used it when I uninstalled updates using Titanium Back-up and it deleted my whole market.
thanks dude i'll check it out.

eww, I had high hopes but it still force closes when I try and download wireless tether. Any other suggestions? In the mean time I'm going to see if using another ROM might help the situation...maybe give it a fresh start or something.
Yeah same story after new ROM...not able to download anything yet anybody else had the same problem and came out on top/would love to hear your solution?
What rom were u running first? Try flashing a stock rooted rom? If that doesn't work try ruu but leave s-off so it's easy to re-root quckly.

clockwork standard untouched from unrevoked and now mikfroyo 4.5...still no luck. I'll try another ROM but I think I have to have a new market or something like that. Is ruu unrooting?
Are you wiping data and cache each time you flash a new ROM? If not, you probably need to.
Are you restoring apps with Titanium Backup after flashing the new ROM? If so, only restore user apps (i.e. don't restore system apps). I've seen some squirrelly things happened when restoring system apps.
Last thing, from your home screen, try going in to Settings...Applications...Manage Applications. Tap on the "All" tab at the top and scroll down to Market and select it. Tap on the "Clear Data" button under Cache.
think i got it under control
You need to reflash gapps if you flashed a new cm rom

Standard Disclaimer... your device, your brains, your hands, your responsibility!
1. Those on pure stock rom without root can skip to step 4
2. Ask yourself if you want to unroot and reflash to bloated VZ rom.
3. Get back to stock. Multiple methods exist, I found using the program found in the below posting to be the easiest.
Many thanks to vabeachfc3s!

http://db.tt/HTJRnSyl download link
4. Force OTA update. There seem to be a dozen variations on HOW to trigger the OTA. The below instructions are from my own successful experiences with the five Nexi my family members have. If followed correctly it should work.
Make sure your Wi-Fi is OFF; your network data is ON. This means you should see signal bars AND the signal descriptor (3g, 4g)
Go to settings>apps and select the ALL category. Find and select Google services framework. Force stop then data/cache.
Back out to your settings. Select About Phone at the very bottom. Go to system updates. You should now see a "last update 12/31/1969" if done correctly. Select check now.
You should now see a notification about the system update being available only thru Wi-Fi. Pull down system tray, select options, and turn on Wi-Fi.
Go back to the settings>about phone>system update option. With Wi-Fi enabled, you should now see horizontal progress meter filling.
The update should complete downloading and you will be prompted to install now.
Done. Feel free to add your own experience with this method. After hearing about the release of the official rom from Verizon I tried the framework trick fifty times without success. I determined that although Wi-Fi was needed to download the update, it should be enabled after clearing the framework and checking for system update under normal network conditions. Some other postings online are stating that the mobile data connection must be disabled to be prompted for the OTA. I have found the data connection must be enabled. I hope one of the methods out there works for you. I've played with many many roms (BAMF, Viscious, JBSourcery, CM10) but I still love the simple, smooth feel of the new update.
All I did was clear the framework and then checked for updates. I did not make any other changes at all and it updated just fine.
Hi guys I really need some help here. Last night I set out to simply find a way to tether wifi from my GS3 for free. From my understanding that required me to root + download tether app with root admin rights. Apparently it appears to be more in depth than that unless I’m missing something simple. I’ll just start by giving you my specs and tell you what I’ve done so far. Sorry for the long post.
Sprint
Galaxy S3
SPH-L710
JellyBean 4.3
Hardware L710.14
Stock kernel and rom
Followed the steps in this link to root it. It pretty much walks me through using Odin to root the phone. Looks like it also installs SuperSU for superuser access. I like the fact that it’s not too invasive, which is great because I simply want wifi tethering and am not looking for a custom kernel or rom. http://honai-android.blogspot.com/20...-sph-l710.html
Supersu
When I start the phone it says “Unfortunately SuperSU has stopped”
Downloaded the apk, ran it, launched ok, asked me to disable knox and said yes, rebooted phone, got same msg that supersu stopped, runs fine after install apk but fails after every reboot. Maybe knox is screwing with it?
No supersu update on the play store
Regardless I installed root checker and says the device has root access…
I downloaded a bunch of tethering apps I thought had root access but none actually enabled tethering.
Foxfi
When I use CDMA only (used this for troubleshooting purposes) Launch Foxfi, activate wifi hotspot, “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”’
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
When I cancel out of that popup it says FoxFI hotspot ready and has the wifi icon on the notification bar but can’t find the wifi network on devices
Also it never requests superuser
1 click wifi tethering free
Launch, click enable, the notification bar says hotspot connected but then I get the same error “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”, still can’t see the network on other devices
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
Also it never requests superuser
Wifi Tether TrevE Mod v3.3
Launch, opens fine, asks for superuser access, click button to enable tethering, get an error in the app that says “tethering started with errors! Please check ‘show log’”
Clicking show log gives me an error of “Unable to open log file. File does not exist.”
It still shows a message “Tethering is currently running…” under the “ongoing apps” section but still can’t find wifi network on other devices
Jtether
Launch, “says turning Wifi AP on” requests superuser access, eventually gets to the same message that says “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
Oddly when I launch Jtether with FoxFI on I can see the FoxFI network for literally 1 second, but not long enough to connect. This only happens when I use CDMA only. When I use LTE/CDMA it never shows up at all.
.
I’ve uncovered a lot of issues but I don’t know where to start troubleshooting. Do I start with SuperSU errors or can they be omitted? Do I start with FoxFI error troubleshooting? Maybe start with finding out why TrevE’s tether mod has errors but log file can’t be found? Maybe the root method I used wasn’t ‘deep’ enough? If so what method should I use? I thought this would be way easier but hours and hours later, here I am with no wifi tethering. I hope you guys can help.
Thnx in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply! What exactly is this file? Is it a new kernel? Or does it simply edit the configurations relating to tethering? Also can I go back to 100% stock after flashing it?
Also will this prevent me from being able to update the OS via Samsung push updates?

It is not new firmware. It's just a modified services.jar file. Since it's a hack, you will not be 100% stock after installing it. (You can get back to it by restoring the stock files (.jar and .odex files).
